Chelsea-Brooklyn
Hello all, I am barely following conversations here, but perhaps some of you would like to follow on this interesting situation and artwork in progress, that Jelena Mijić and me are doing. Also, Ann Sanfedele said she might try and call for an NYC meet-up, since I am here and we never met in person. So, the work is actually using ebay as its integral part https://www.ebay.com/itm/152764469279?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1558.l2649=true so follow there if interested. And the meetup will be in early November. Btw. if anybody us near Stanford on Nov 2nd, you could come listen to me talk about Belgrade http://events.stanford.edu/events/716/71665/ (rsvp needed i think). Also, if you are in NYC today, and free, come listen to Jelena talk about her art at Residency Unlimited near Carol Gardens in Brooklyn - she is not part of this list, but is mentioned here, and her work is very interesting, as is the other collective from Slovenia, which will also be presenting https://www.facebook.com/events/871073039728879/ (no rsvp needed, just come by) -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: The Luminous Landscape previews 645Z
nikon d800 is much cheaper, why exclude it? D3x has advantages mostly in very specific realms of high-end sports photography, which definitely isn't a medium format's forte anyway. Only the size and price realy compare, but if you really want something big, well, just buy a mamiya rb67 and save a ton. Leica monochrome is just an expensive and very specialty item. Don't see why compare. All that aside, the z is definitely super cheap compared to even the past generation of mf solutions, but why not compare it to the d800, which is almost as good at everything it does, at a third of the price. The reviewers criticize the green button and the video, and wonder about the trade-offs of size, price, and performance compared to smaller cameras (esp. 24x36). They also say (just going quickly through the review): But we have to put these relatively minor critiques in context: the 645Z is light-years ahead of any other MF-class camera, and frankly better than just about all of the FF 35mm machines in user interface. It's almost like an actual photographer was involved in the design. Revolutionary. The files off the Z are superb. Here's the kicker..the 21MP, 'lowest' quality jpegs were, on-screen, just amazing. Converted to BW, and tweaked quite a bit in LR, they are gorgeous. All of this comes in the context of a camera with amazing high ISO capabilities. CCDs simply cannot compete on that front at all. Bottom line is superb IQ. The Z is a real working pro's field camera in every sense. It's a camera that's almost never annoying to use, and will no doubt be a trusty companion for years of use. I suspect the people who buy them will grow to love them. The Pentax 645D may well have the best high ISO performance of any camera to date (including the Sony A7s), and with little doubt has the lowest noise high ISO performance of any medium format camera, including as best we can tell that of the Phase One and Hasselblads that use the same sensor. It's a world-class image-maker in every regard, and the fullest realization of the dream of a 35mm quality MF camera. We all need negative, nitpicking reviews like that! Raw Season Crowdfunding drive
Hello all, Some you may remember the Belgrade Raw project from my previous posts. It's a collective aimed at documenting the real Belgrade via strait documentary photography. Read all about our crowdfunding drive here - http://artget.belgraderaw.com/donate Short version: Belgrade Raw has had some success and ended up in charge of the main photo-gallery in Belgrade for 2013. We made an exhibitions plan including a lot of great international projects (D.Webber's Interrogations, M. Lutton's Only Unity, Pete Brook's Prison Photography) - (a pdf can be seen here - http://artget.belgraderaw.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Artget-program-Belgrade-Raw1.pdf). Since the gallery, as all culture in Serbia is basically not funded, we focused on things we could do without funds. One thing we would like is to bring Blake Andrews, Donald Webber and Pete Brook to Serbia. They would each hold a workshop, present at a lecture and also exhibit there work. For this we need the money for plane tickets (they all agreed to donate their time and work to us). Besides that, we want to publish a book about the Raw Season, once it is finished, containing the information and photographs from the exhibitions, workshops and lectures that happen during it. If any of this sounds interesting, or some of the awards we offer in return for donations do, please consider donating, or just spreading the word. Thanks! Re: GESO: Romania/Austrika
sorry about the technical issues, i've tried to make it the simplest possible, but it's incredible how hard it is to get a straight, no fades photos on white slideshow. and the white background stays, it's somehow the most non-intruding, i.e. some photos really do stand out on black, but that is the point, it affects photos more. Stan, you helped me realize something with your post - the first slide is my impression from austria/romania condensed, but by honestly exploring the experience and photos i've made to an edit that is a lot more nuanced. my impression is still colored by the hello effect, but it's nice that the slideshow reads as less accusing of romania than that :) (still a lot of stuff is terribly wrong there, and i've rarely felt that about a place, being from serbia and all :D) On Sat, Dec 4, 2010 at 12:08 AM, Ann Sanfedele ann...@nyc.rr.com wrote: Luka Knezevic-Strika wrote: wait, you click on the slide and nothing happens? other methods of navigation? Good call Paul, I did eliminate that slide! About the length, I find it great when people end it wishing for more. I've found that with longer edits, i.e. 30 slides with 2 or more pictures, many people don't go through. it has to do with the web attention span, it's really rare that people are ready to go for a long time just clicking next-next :) I also found that very few people focused on the pairings, and the way it works or doesn't and on the overall flow of the slideshow. somehow, most of the comments are about individual images. This partly has to mean that the whole thing doesn't work well enough, but i think it also has to do with the way people are used to looking at photos online, which is mostly singled out photos or sometimes straight slideshows. Re: m42 takumar 300/4
actually, a usable live view mode with magnification has proven to be of most use to me. i've shot m42 takumars with pentax k10d and a canon 5d mkII and the use with the latter is much more pleasurable and much more useful, especially towards the wide end (not only the angle of view, but also the ability to focus properly) On Fri, Nov 5, 2010 at 3:34 PM, CheekyGeek cheekyg...@gmail.com wrote: Don't forget the Hyper Manual mode. http://www.ok1000pentax.com/2009/04/pentax-hyper-program-and-hyper-manual.html http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1036message=36220193 Shooting with m42 lenses is best on a Pentax, because of Hyper Manual. It will be different. The aperture does not get held open, so if you're dialing the lens down to f/11 you'll be looking through a lens which is actually stopped down to f/11. On the bright (ha!) side, metering in Av mode would be real-time with no need for the green button. Charles, forgive me for asking, but do you actually use m42 lenses on a recent pentax dslr? Brief answer: I *have done so*, but do not regularly do so. I ask because I think it is a little misleading to say that metering in Av mode is automatic. Let me immediately state that I'm a nOOb at both dslrs and m42s. But my experience is that when working with pentax dslrs and m42 lenses: - Av mode will work correctly ONLY if your aperture is wide open. if you want to stop down the lens, then the metering gets helplessly inaccurate. I have found it works fine... if it's not too dark where I'm shooting. Stopping it down indoors, for example, can quickly throw the amount of light hitting the meter down into the what the heck, I can't measure that range. Then it stinks. - Manual mode: the meter works reliably but requires one extra push of your metering or green button. (focus, set your aperture on the lens such that the blades actually visibly stop down, press the green button, fire away). This could yield the same problems as above, if it's too dark. I couldn't see (in my admittedly-limited exposure with this old crappy lens I never use) a difference between the two methods. But... this was 3 years ago so I guess it would be wrong to say that my experience is current! -Charles -- Charles Robinson - charl...@visi.com Minneapolis, MN http://charles.robinsontwins.org http://www.facebook.com/charles.robinson -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- Nothing is sure, except Death and Pentaxes. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

lightroom is only useful for editing multiple pictures (batches of 10-20 or a 100+ images) at once. it is also great for cataloguing and it's perfect for tracking back all your changes. for editing a couple of pictures when you know what you want to do with them, ps can be better. still, the workflow that i think is 'normal' is lr first than ps if needed. On Fri, Aug 6, 2010 at 8:08 PM, Tom C caka...@gmail.com wrote: I've recently started carrying a corporate laptop and have been Photoshopless on the road. I'm sure the differences between PS and LR have been discussed ad nauseum, yet I'm still curious about how others feel they compare. I realize it's natural to prefer what one is accustomed to, and for me that's been Photoshop since 3.0 thru CS2. My opinion after working / trying to work with LR is that I much prefer Photoshop. I'm particularly irked that it does not let me resize my image at any time in the editing process. I also find the software itself uses up far too much screen real estate for itself in default mode. Overall I prefer the interface of PS and the fact that it has no pretenses of imposing a structured workflow of it's originators design upon my postcapture processing. k10d help
it seems my k10d died on me today. but perhaps some of you can help diagnose it. so, after a normal shot, the mirror just stayed up (the curtain closed). the camera works normal otherwise (albeit slow) - you can review the photos and set things in menus you cannot shoot obviously, and you here the sound from the camera that sounds a little as a focusing sound from a 16-50 2.8 lens crossed with the regular sensor cleaning at power-up routine (which also works normally) any ideas? i'm guessing that the shutter died (it is well over 50k anyway), but i'm hoping it could be something with the mirror, that could be fixed more easily, perhaps by a non-pentax service (we don't have one in serbia) thanks for any ideas, luka -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

It looks like the *istD to her and in her mind it is. :-) FWIW, the exposure accuracy of the K-7 does seem better than the K10/K20, and the *istD (which I found to be really bad). -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- Documenting Life in Rural Ontario. www.caughtinmotion.com http://brooksinthecountry.blogspot.com/ York Region, Ontario, Canada -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: PESO: Anja
There's been significant news recently about a certain photographer who should have never been allowed to be alone with young girls. well, i assure you that i'm interested only in her oldest sister and she is an adult :) @bob: it is very nice to read such positive comments, if there is one thing that i try to do with photography, than it is to make them provoke others to imagine the lives and people and places that are featured (not really even the truth about them, just to provoke to think about them), although, since most of my photo endevours are not really structured and mostly are spontaneous i do not always feel i am succeding in anything except amusing myself :) -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I'd also like to recommend the two groups where it got accepted on flickr: http://www.flickr.com/groups/the-hit/pool/ http://www.flickr.com/groups/lfa/pool/ good stuff, makes me happy when i get a shot there, almost as much as when i get into hcsp (which is just the hardest, so it's rarer :)) On Sun, Oct 4, 2009 at 8:46 PM, Luka Knezevic-Strika lukastr...@gmail.com wrote: but it still like getting a fix to me, the author accross the sea :P On Sun, Oct 4, 2009 at 8:43 PM, eckinator eckina...@gmail.com wrote: Yes I think we are all in agreement about that. Re: PESO - A Taste Of Summer.
the vertical branch is distracting, the focus a little off, or too shallow, and the white balance simce not entirely correct (it's too warm i think) the light is well, a bit boring - sun only and all that, and the subject is also kind of uninteresting. so, your enjoyment wasn't mine this time :) hope the apple tasted well! :) On Sun, Oct 4, 2009 at 8:55 PM, Malcolm Smith malcolmsmi...@btinternet.com wrote: Well, the test got through so here is a picture I took last Sunday.
