You could also check out Pacific Mount...

These work pretty well - just adhere the photo to the mount and it's
ready to hang. You may have to rethink your cropping, though, as they
don't come 12x18.

Pat and Julie told me that you can't just sell prints, they need to be

Golden State Art in South San Francisco have 16x20 mats pre-cut for
12x18.
They'll sell you a pack of 100 for $153 (if you want either black or
white),

or they'll custom cut 16x20 mats for $2.89 each (minimum quantity 10)
if you want something other than the standard 11.5 x 17.5 cutout.
They also offer a matboard + backing + re-sealable clear bag for $3.35

For 6x4 they have 5x7 pre-cut mats (200 for $49.50 - now on sale for
$37).

They'll also sell you backing board, foam board, or just about anything
to do with framing. If it's the place I think it is, I bought some mats
from them many years ago, but couldn't remember the name of the company.
Fortunately I had a rough idea where they were located, and that, plus
a bit of Google searching, eventually came up with Golden State Art.

Once I get around to printing, I expect I'll be patronising them again.

Re: 20th Anniversary PUG is Up!

2017-04-03 Thread Paul in MKE

Cotty -

Really enjoyed reading your review of the 20th Anniversary PUG. Thanks
for the kind words about "Pure Joy".

The subjects are our grandson and his father, so, like the image you
submitted, there was a bit of personal emotion involved in its
selection. BTW, the image was cropped down a bit from the top to get rid
of extraneous blank sky, otherwise it's the entire frame. :-)

On 4/3/2017 5:24 PM, Steve Cottrell wrote:

On 3/4/17, Brian Walters, discombobulated, unleashed:

Well, we ended up with 70 submissions - well done all! A fine way to
celebrate 20 years.
As usual you'll find the gallery here:

http://pug.komkon.org/

Just had a sit down and spent an hour going through the PUG with the Mrs.

Fantastic selection of images, some I recall seeing previously over the
years, others never seen before. Really enjoyable and sometimes quite
poignant viewing: the images submitted on behalf of those friends who
have left us, really was quite touching. Lovely idea.

I could just say that the whole gallery was great and you should all be
proud and leave it at that.but I simply can't.

There are some really standout images that I can't resist mentioning,
and some others that merit a word or two, a couple that raised an
eyebrow, a few that made me gasp, the odd meh, several award winners and
one that inspired anger!

In fact I had to explain that the pics weren't just submitted because
the photographer thought his or her image was great, but because it was
an image that meant something within their time on the PDML. There is
history in these images, not just the obvious, but the history of the
photographer, their own journeys and experiences. For instance, I chose
my image not because it is a good image - it's really only so-so. But it
means a huge amount: it was taken with classic Pentax film equipment,
the subject is so dear to my heart, and it reminds me of happy days
watching my son grow up, warm summer days in the countryside,
discovering the PDML, and a zillion other things.

So really, they can't be 'rated' as perhaps in a normal PUG. That said,
These things are *always* subjective and me and the Mrs disagreed on
several pics - she would 'oh wow' herself silly while the same photo
rated a mere 'meh' from me. But this is my email so she can go fish.

My standouts:

A Pug for the PUG by Mike Wacht - because who doesn't like a really good
shot of a dawg.

Grandfather Mountain by Bill Owens - that classic view that makes my
heart skip a beat. RIP Bill.

Gospel by Bruno Macedo - Long exposure producing stunning result, just a
lovely image. Bruno, if you're lurking and reading this, be proud. I love it.

Old Window by Simon Williams - my wife loved this. Meh. Good pic tho.

Nephews by Derby Chang - Derbs, this is supreme. Fantastic image, love
everything about it. Sheer brilliance mate. Light a cigar.

Sunset at Grandfather Mountain by Ted Beilby - Ted I've never seen this
before! Touching moment with my lad, made me well up!

The River by Brian Walters - Mrs cooed and aaahed. It's misty water FFS,
get over it. Nicely done though.

A Winter Afternoon by Vladimir Koukal - Vlad old boy, break out the
vodka, I likes a bit a symmetry when I can gets it. Lovely stuff!

Claudia - My First Photo by Krzysztof - WOW. Striking and made me look a
long time. GREAT work mate, must be a photo-god what with one name like
Brassai, Ctein, Cotty (har!)

Leading Lady by Bruce Walker - yep seen it before, dreamy bokeh, great
shot, etc etc, was expecting some nice legs or something. See teacher.

My Girls by Paul Stenquist - not seen this one before, lovely playful
shot, against the window too but nailed it.

Mount Lagorce by Ken Waller - WOW OH WOW. Breathtaking.

Fog in Hawk Wood by Malcolm Smith - LOVE THIS MALC - that is sublime.
You should be doing serious landscape work. That's a winner mate.

Descent by Subash Jeyan - holy mackerel Subers - this is such an amazing
photograph, about the BEST pic in the gallery. Love it completely and
utterly. Find myself keep having to look at it again. That is fantastic.
Can't tell you enough. I'm giving up photography and going to see out my
days as a capybara.

Happy New Year by Matt Burt - the Mrs and I agreed on this one, stunning
colours and atmosphere. Hats off that you worked hard to get it.

Le Disque Bleu by Rick Womer - GREAT shot Rick - real strong atmosphere
what with the colours and the ghostly figures, real sense of place. Love it.

The Gathering by Jay Taylor - There's no great overriding reason why
this pic works so well. LOVE the space around the group huddled together
on the spot surrounded by all this space. Lovely vibrant colours and a
real fun pic. Super!

On the Brown Line, Chicago by Christine Aguilamonster - I've said this
before and I'll say it again. Robert Frank would have been proud to snap
that. OUTSTANDING. Top of the pile, just makes me want to go out and
take photos. Inspirational Christine. But you knew that!!! Go suck on a
bottle,

produces somewhat better prints, too, but I doubt the difference would
be noticeable without serious magnified examination. The other

chromogenic prints.

But if I *was* looking for a new printer, I think Epson now offers
printers that use bulk ink. That's what I'd look for.

You don't have to replace cartridges, just refill the bottles. And since
the bottles are racked on the side of the printer where you can see
them, you can always see how much ink is left.

Agreed. We saw it over the weekend and felt the same way.

This is a story that should have been told decades ago. Besides being
historically important, it is emotionally very moving. When applause
breaks out in the auditorium at the close of the film you know it has
made an impact.

This is an important movie. See it, on a big screen if possible. Make
your children see it. Make your grandchildren see it.

It is a scandal that this story has been overlooked for so long. It needs
to be told, and to be spread all around our country.

BTW, it is quite entertaining, and the acting is superb.

Ann and I and some others here will relate to the Sputnik scare, hiding
under our desks at school and the drama of the first 7 Astronauts. The
scenes of segregation and prejudice in the South of the early 1960 are
moving and disturbing, but true to what I saw. Most importantly, however,
is the story of the black women who did most of the math on which our early
ventures into space were based is an incredible and inspiring tale of
courage, persistence and pride.

See it. I promise you will be moved and inspired.

I was able to find a free third party software product that seems to
have done the job. It /only/ took about two hours for the analysis to
run. I don't know if it's very through or very inefficient.

I stayed up to make sure it didn't need any user intervention, but for

Anyway if you're interested in giving new life to an old Colorimeter,
The product is called DisplayCAL.

It can be a little tricky and obtuse to initially install, and takes a
long time to profile a monitor, but hey it's free and seems to work.
It also supports a wide range of colorimeters, not just the Spyder2.

Now I'm off to bed, before I do something stupid and try to soft proof

John wins the prize. In the days before engine driven vacuum pumps, a

was that the instruments didn't become "live" until you built up speed
going down the runway and if you encountered icing conditions they iced
up and you lost your instruments.

It's going to be a live backup of the finished system, just in case.

Now all I have to do is install all my data HDs and reinstall my

Next upgrade will be to max out the memory.

More than likely you have USB 2.0 unless someone intentionally installed
a separate USB 3.0 card when they refurbished it. Like Larry saie, USB
3.0 ports are usually blue colored. Most external hard drives are
backward compatible to USB 2.0. Just check the specs on the box before
you buy. The only downside is the USB 2.0 transfer speed will be
slower. Just start backing things up the last thing you do before you

Re: digitizing 8mm film with K1?

I'd have to agree with Paul. Trying to do this with any DSLR would be a
lot of work for a very questionable outcome. I had a lot of 8mm from

Ah, thanks, Zos.

So would you say that maintenance is low as long as you just leave it

futz with them more often than is worthwhile if you don't print
constantly. I suspect I'd only print a small number every couple of

the Epson and older Canon printers this one uses dye ink and man
is it

vivid. If you want to print stuff that looks like slide film this is
the printer for you. I haven't tried any skin tones yet, so I'll
maybe

follow up this post when I print a few portraits from it. The review
on imaging resource is looking pretty bad really. I think this
printer

is a lot better than what they present. I don't really know what
settings they were using, but when you run your images through their
plugin it seems to do a very good job with color using the stock
profiles. The black and white I printed on canon paper seemed fairly
neutral when I looked at it in direct sunlight. I actually print
things for a living and have used large format canons for some time
and always highly recommend them. I would do the same for this
printer. Just know that ink costs are up on this model but a full set
is only $109 for 8 carts. Not bad really. Individuals are $16.99 I
think, up from the $13 the older ones were. You can probably get
about

30-40 13x19s before you start swapping ink carts and of course your
mileage may vary. Obviously B prints will kill the three black
carts

pretty fast. One full size print didn't dent the first cartridge set,
but a black and white definitely moved the on screen indicators a
bit.

I prints up to 13x19 which is pretty decent really. I love 11x17 so
this is perfect for a lot of things. Borderless 13x19 looks fantastic
though you do give up some image along the sides. You can buy 13x19
frames too. It also prints CDs which is interesting.

If you are considering a printer I would definitely look at this. It
has pretty much all the features and quality that the Pixma Pro 1 had
and that cost $1000 new. The heads are easily replaceable on this
printer as well. I think the epsons are still not user serviceable.
One advantage that the smaller epsons have is that they print
rolls as
well. I think up to 20" wide right? so that gives the ability to
print

a bit bigger. Still I'm very happy with this and this is a lot nicer
than the old 9500 mark 2 I used to use. Much better print quality
with

much more accurate color. If you are someone that can sell a lot of
small prints this is a good printer to have around. I'm really hoping
that they move to adding RGB colors like their larger printers have
eventually. That would give them a huge color gamut. Still for 8
colors this thing does really, really well. Just know that its
best to

leave them on all the time so that they self clean which doesn't use
much ink in the long run. Otherwise you have to use a lot more ink
trying to purge and test print.

The greater contrast looks good, but it's maybe a little too much. On
my monitor the really dark shadow on the left side loses separation from

Re: Fast Normal Zoom. (for APS-C)

2016-10-29 Thread Paul in MKE
I've had the Sigma 17-50/2.8 for about three months now and am happy
with the results. I might have gotten the 17-70 but the additional $100
wasn't in my budget at the time. It's still nicely discounted at
Adorama and B and H, although B and H says the offer ends on 10/31. I
do wish it didn't zoom "backwards", though.

These were all done with the Sigma 17-50...

So I've been getting along using a combination of a Manual focus
Varafocal, (Vivitar 35-85mm f2.8), and a FA 20-35mm which satisfies
most of my needs, but they can be damnably inconvenient, the varafocal
makes me think that sometimes I need extra fingers and more inertial
processing for my brain to keep track of stop down metering,
re-framing and refocusing, which leads to a lot more missed shots than
I'm happy with. Swapping to the 20-35 and back, is sometimes
necessary at very inconvenient times which also leads to missed shots.

It doesn't look like a Full Frame camera is in my budget for quite
some time, and let's face it, I've come to terms with APS-C. The
K-5II is more than sufficient for most of what I do, in fact is better
than most needs. A more identical backup body is what I'm more likely
to get than an actual full frame camera, maybe a K-7 another
K-5[II(s)], or K3 thought the latter would have some of the same
problems as using the K20D as backup, though the K5II hasn't failed me
yet.

So I'm looking at APS-C lenses.

I've kind of narrowed it down to five lenses, at this point, based on
reviews.

Pentax FA* 16-55 f2.8 available new.

Sigma 17-50 f2.8, comes in couple versions, latest version still
available new.

Tamron 17-50 f2.8 also comes in a couple of versions latest version
still available new.

Pentax FA 17-70, seems to be discontinued, but still available new.

Sigma 17-70, three versions, latest one still available new.

All of them have pluses and minuses, the Pentax FA* is the most
expensive, the first version of the Tamron is least expensive, of
course it's only really available used. I like the idea of the 17-70
as it would cut down on the necessity of changing lenses when things
are moving fast.

I know there are people on the list who've used later Sigma 17-70, and
the two Pentax lenses, but what about the Sigma 17-50 and Tamron 17-50
has anybody got any experience with them? Optically good? Mechanically
crap? Vice Versa?

It comes down to the fact that I don't trust most reviewers. I'll pick
up something that's gotten bad reviews play with it a while and think,
this isn't nearly as bad as I expected, hell this even seems to be
pretty good, and things that have gotten good reviews and think, what
the f*#k was that guy talking about this is pretty horrible. You guys
have real world experience, what is it.

My ISP never provides an manual either. If we get change providers
and/or get a different modem/router I Google the make and model and
usually am able to come up with an electronic version of the manual.
Every modem I've had from different providers has had the same IP
address - 192.168.0.1 - and some combination of the words "admin" and
"password" for the log-in. You can log in with any phone or tablet that
has wi-fi and a web browser and make any changes needed.

In order to log in to the modem to change the mode to work with my

default wi-fi network before I can log into it.

Nor did Time-Warner supply a user manual that includes how to set up the
modem to use a wired Ethernet connection. So I'm going to have to call
"support" anyway.

Every time I talk to Time-Warner's "support", I have to tell them that I
don't use wi-fi and explain to them what an Ethernet network is so they
don't just reset the modem to wi-fi only and tell me the problem is my
router.

My only alternative for high speed internet in Raleigh is AT U-Verse.

Those two have a monopoly here - Time-Warner for cable, AT for
telephone line based access. Google fiber is supposed to be on the way,
but I don't know how long it's going to be before it gets here.

Nor do I really know if their support will be any better.

There are a couple of smaller towns in eastern North Carolina that
couldn't get high speed internet from either the cable companies nor the
telephone companies, so they installed their own municipal high speed
internet as a public utility. The cable/phone companies went to the NC
Legislature & had them put a stop to that - passing a law that cities &
towns couldn't offer municipal internet service. The towns went to court
& won an exemption for already existing municipal systems.

Can't have any NEW municipal internet systems, but for now, the towns
can keep the systems they have in place. They're also not allowed to
extend the systems to any area that wasn't already connected to the
municipal system.

Every session of the Legislature since then has had a bill introduced to
overturn the court decision & force the towns/cities with municipal
internet services to turn them over to the cable/phone companies. So
far, they haven't passed any new laws in that regard because they
haven't figured out how to write one that will stand up in court.

On 10/12/2016 4:59 PM, P.J. Alling wrote:

Re: Stearman Kaydet

2016-10-12 Thread Paul in MKE
The Stearman was widely used by the US military as a primary trainer
during WWII and many were auctioned off for a pittance after the war.
An old-time pilot I knew some 40+ years ago told me he bought one, new,
still in the crate for $450. Because they were relatively cheap and
very sturdy many were converted to crop dusters. While there were
several engine variants on the original military models, most of them
were in the range of 220+ horsepower. Many of the models converted to
dusters had the engines upgraded to the Pratt & Whitney R-985, which was
nearly double the original horsepower. There are about 1000 still
registered in the US, but probably not nearly that number still in
flying condition.

Probably the most memorable movie scene with a Stearman is the one
chasing Cary Grant in "North By Northwest".

Re: Some printer stuff to chew on...

2016-10-12 Thread Paul in MKE
As Paul Stenquist said, are you setting the software to control the
color output or depending on the printer's driver? I looked on the Red
River site and it appears they don't have an ICC profile for the R220,
but they do for the R2400. Would be a good idea to install he one for
the R2400 and use that when printing from that printer. Just be sure
that if you use Elements to control the output you set the printer
driver to not control the output results.

Also, I believe the R220 uses dye based inks while the R2400 inks are
pigment based. That could be a reason for the prints looking a slightly
different.

Are you printing with "PS Elements controls printing" or using the printer's
color controls? To get accurate results you need to use the former. Accurate profiles are
also an issue. Can you choose a paper for which ics profiles for your printers are
available? That makes all the difference.

I did a little test - took one file and printed it out three times on my R220

Remove profile. within the same printer run, they all look identical to me...
but the R2400 prints are simply overall lighter than the R220. Now the R220
only has one black cartridge and the r2400 has 3, as most of you probably know.
But you switch out the main Black one when you use matte paper.

I used 50lb Red river stock for this, double sided matte with the matte
cartridge in , of course. On the R220 the setting was matte paper heavy weight
best photo and photo enhanced. On the R2400 there was a setting choice for
double sided matte so I used that.

I haven't got any Red River specific profiles - and from what I'm seeing I
don't think it matters...

Looks like either or both printers are simply overriding whatever is stored in
the file or it really doesn't matter what profiel one uses and it is all BS, or

both printers are using a profile that is the samebecause I'm in Photoshop
Elements 10 when i print and there is something in THAT which is controlling it.

I like some of thecalendar pages as they are on the r220 better than the r2400
and vice versabut it would be nice not to have to fiddle with the files every
time I print one calendar page.

any ideas?

off to my daily nap now

That "Boattail" design was popular in the 1930s. Auburn and Duesenberg
were big in that design.

Getting the HTML address is kind of a PITA compared to the old
dropbox method but it works, and doesn't look to be a lot worse than
a lot of paid web sites so I guess I'm good for now.

I'm thinking that now is a good time to reorganize my PESOs into some
kind of gigantic portfolio, since all the old links are now bad anyway.

In the meantime here are a couple of images I was using for testing.
Taken with the *ist-Ds and FA 28-200, which was lousy on film, but
pretty good on APS-C digital and made a nice pairing with the FA
20-35 as a walking around kit. (Notice I didn't like it enough to
try to find a new one when my copy was beat up enough to cause
decentering to become aparent in the images).

Re: OT: This makes so much sense!

That's the trouble with leaks...when it's raining, you can't fix 'em and
when it's not raining, you don't need to. :-)

Good. Thanks. The weather.gov one is the one I need.

Power has been off twice. Both times for less time than it takes to shut
down the computers. I've shut down the rest of the computers anyway, but
I'm keeping this one on to get weather updates.

My leak is contained on the inside. I still have all the buckets &
plastic from before.

If I get a break in the rain, I've already got scaffolding in place, so
it won't take long to install a temporary patch.

I've got another damn leak! I'd like to figure out how soon I'm

be able to risk getting up there to rig a patch.

I can't find a decent weather map (radar type) that shows where the
heavy rain is & which way the heavy rain is moving.

So I thought I'd share.

I just got a robo-call from my electric utility to warn me there might
be a "storm" in this area in the next few days, and that I should
consider in advance what to do if the power goes off.

One of the things they suggested was that if it DOES go off, I should
consult their web site to find out the extent of the outage. I'll make
sure to check, JUST AS SOON AS THE POWER COMES BACK ON!

Sometimes all you can do is laugh & cry at the same time.
