The Puffins are stunning. I would kill for any of those images of a wolf in

Re: Giving up on Pentax (probably)

2013-08-22 Thread SV Hovland
I have tested this on my own K-7 and DA*16-50. I wanted to find out if this is
a good solution for me and I did the test before the warranty went out. I found
it to be perfectly good. It focuses just as fast as SDM, but with more noise of
course. So I decided to not send my lens in and complain about slow SDM after
all. I could wait to complete break down and continue with the old focusing
instead.

 Hi all

The last straw has been that my DA* 16-50 has stopped auto-focussing
again. The internal motor was replaced a couple of years ago (so out
of warranty) and now it looks like there's another couple of hundred
quid to be spent on it. And yes, I've cleaned all of the contacts and
yes, my DA* 50-135 works OK on my only remaining K-7 body.

So the decision's nearly made to sell off the K-7, DA* 16-50 (either
repaired or as is), DA* 50-135, a lovely F*300 4.5 (the one with the
tripod mount), an FA-135 2.8 (probably my favourite lens ever) and an
FA-50 1.7. I'll put the proceeds towards a backup Fuji X body and get
the excellent 55 - 200 zoom to cover the long end of the range and to
sit alongside my growing collection of Fuji X primes. I'll keep a
number of MF lenses so may still be able to appear in the PDML
 annual...

Any guidance on how to price? Or if anyone's interested in making me
any sensible offers, contact me off list and I'll get more details and
photos arranged and we can sort out logistics.

 Yours sadly, Chris

RE: Soccer

2013-04-23 Thread SV Hovland
Yes, both Pentax F*250-600/5.6 and FA*250-600/5.6 are f/5.6 across the range
and with autofocus. They are both expensive and difficult to get hold of, but I
got one probably because of the missing tripod mount.

After receiving it and checking condition, I started out with FreeCAD to make a
drawing of the mount. I have never used a CAD program before and struggled a
little bit in the beginning. But after three long evenings, it was finished. I
sent the drawing file to Shapeways and got a plastic mount two weeks later. The
plastic mount is solid enough to test it on a tripod and after some small
adjustments on the drawing, I sent the files to a company who will make it of
aluminum. I am promised to have this in the week or two.

Here are some pictures of it with the plastic mount.

And I also forgot to thank Tim for notifying me of the ebay auction. The
auction ended with me as the highest bidder, but still under the lowest limit
the seller asked for. He contacted me and I got the lens for 1/3 to 1/2 of what
they usually go for. I think he realized the missing tripod mount was quite a
limiting factor for the interest in his lens.

You forgot to mention that you are integrating a arca swiss compatible

That's why I award you for the Mounter of the year title.

2013/4/23 SV Hovland pdml...@heime.org:
Yes, both Pentax F*250-600/5.6 and FA*250-600/5.6 are f/5.6 across the range
and with autofocus. They are both expensive and difficult to get hold of, but
I got one probably because of the missing tripod mount.

After receiving it and checking condition, I started out with FreeCAD to make
a drawing of the mount. I have never used a CAD program before and struggled
a little bit in the beginning. But after three long evenings, it was
finished. I sent the drawing file to Shapeways and got a plastic mount two
weeks later. The plastic mount is solid enough to test it on a tripod and
after some small adjustments on the drawing, I sent the files to a company
who will make it of aluminum. I am promised to have this in the week or two.

Here are some pictures of it with the plastic mount.

Soccer

2013-04-21 Thread SV Hovland
I won an F*250-600/5.6 action on ebay last month, but haven't used until today.
The reason is that the lens was without the tripod mount and it is not very
usable without. I will have a tripod mount made of aluminum next week and I was
using a temporary made of plastic today.

So here are some pictures. These are the first taken by me with this lens and
it is also the first time with a 600mm lens. The performance is as expected :-)

I meant to write The performance of the lens is as expected :-). As this was
the first time for me on a soccer match with camera, I suppose I did most of it
wrong, but I had a few usable pictures.

The lens is unbelievable sharp. At 300mm it is difficult to see any difference
between this wide open and DA*300/4 stopped down to f/5.6.

Excellent gallery Stig Vidar. You must have got up very early in the mornings
to have so few people around, The absence of other PDMLers is noted...

For my galleries I use JAlbum and web space from my ISP. I've got a routine
where I export images from LR using a preset and dump them into a JAlbum
gallery and then use its internal ftp for uploading.
With minimal tweaking I can do it in half an hour. JAlbum is free, but there's
a one-off licence fee (around 30 Euros I think) if you want to remove ads.

What is this parting with lenses of which you speak?

Currently I don't see any way I'd let the 60-250 get away from me, and even
though I haven't used it in a couple of years I hope that I don't need to
reclaim the equity tied up in the 250-600.

But while five years ago I wouldn't have considered getting rid of the FA*
80-200, I haven't used it since I got the 60-250 (and even before that the
50-135 had all but supplanted it).

I thought it might be an interesting discussion to ask the PDML assembled, the
following question:
What lenses do you regret parting with (or will *never* part with)? I have the
feeling some interesting stories, images, and who-knows-what-else might come
from this thread. Depending upon everyone's participation (of course) it has
the potential to be a whopper of a thread.

I'd like the discussion to include anything everything, from manual focus
screwmount lenses up to the latest technology.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to pop some popcorn in anticipation of the
coming show.

Larry and John's supermacro setups inspired me to get my ass off the chair
and do something about the hoarfrost on the car outside today. Thanks guys!
:-)

Here's one of the results:
http://www.alunfoto.no/temp/supermacro/20130102-0163-blogspot.jpg

Here's the setup:
http://www.alunfoto.no/temp/supermacro/20130102-0001-2-blogspot.jpg

In case you wondered g, it's the 645D. It is attached to a set of three
extension tubes, a FA*300mm f/4 and a reversed FA 75mm f/2.8. The optics
alone provide 4X, but cause some vignetting. The extension removes that, and
add another X or so.

Hi Stig!

Bad news: it's not just Gmail doing this to your messages. Yahoo! Mail is
trashing your messages such that they don't even go into the spam folder.

I've been receiving PDML mail into an otherwise unused Yahoo mail account for
some months now to diagnose mail problems back in the summer. I just left it
running because ... it's free. :-)

I just logged in there and searched for your name. Messages from you no longer
appear there after November 11. The last one in the archive is RE:
Pixel-peeping madness.
Message-ID: BA5B58E4B469CD4F863DBA00A5A5515D14FD7F32@SERVER6.Heime.local

Something has changed (SPF records?) since around that time. I checked for
blacklist entries against your mail server (gandi1.heime.org
[92.243.9.226]) but found nothing.

http://mxtoolbox.com/blacklists.aspx

If you are having trouble getting responses out of anyone, I think I know why.
:) You might want to setup an alternate mail address for a while to diagnose
this thing.

By the way, although the PDML list server is forwarding your email, anti-spam
algorithms go deeper into all the headers, the originating sender, and the
message body. Spammers often try to launder their messages through
intermediaries so anti-spam filters are wise to that.

I like it, Stig. The post-processing works for this and adds to the interest.

You should add a few more words into your messages though. Gmail has sent your
last few PESOs into the spam folder for me. A solitary URL in an almost-empty
message, especially one to a Microsoft service, looks very suspicious to the
anti-junk filters.

Re: DA 35/2.8 macro vs. FA 35/2 or DA/2.4

2012-11-20 Thread SV Hovland
I cannot compare DA35/2,8 macro to either DA35/2,4 or FA35/2. But I know
DA35/2,8 is a very good lens. You will find technical details on photozone, but
I could mention that this lens has a suprisingly fast autofocus. It is
perfectly usable as a universal lens used for almost everything.

Hi All:

About 2 months ago, there was a thread about FA35/2.
Interestingly, that while people have mentioned DA35/2.4, and a few
other 35s, nobody mentioned DA 35/2.8 macro.

How is DA 35/2.8 macro in comparison to either FA35/2 or DA35/2.4
(or even 16-50/2.8)?

Thank you in advance,

RE: Pixel-peeping madness

2012-11-11 Thread SV Hovland
K-5 IIs does indeed have a better AF. I have three lenses which is now working
as they should.

My FA*400/5,6 would not focus correctly at all on the three or four K-5 I
tried. But it was working on K-7, K10D and *istDS and it is working as it
should on K-5 IIs.

My FA*80-200 was very difficult to use on K-5. I would guess 1/3 of the
pictures was back focused and 1/3 front focused. And my lens needed +8 on AF
adjustment at 200mm and +2 at 80mm. On the K-5 IIs, focus is spot on every
time. And no adjustment is needed.

And my DA*55 is a lot more consistent with K-5 IIs. It was usable on K-5, but
quite a lot of the pictures was either front or back focusing.

So I am happy with the upgrade. Maybe this is what K-5 should be in the first
place, but it wasn't. Upgrading to K-5 IIs has given me at least two lenses
back.

I've NEVER bought a camera based on pixel-peeping (in fact, I've even done the
opposite and bought a camera that was pretty bad when pixel-peeped), and I
agree with you, Rob, that I would only choose the
K-5II(s) if its AF were better than the K-5's, given the great price of the K-5
right now.

I still suspect Pentax have a new flagship up their sleeve that will be
released shortly for $1,600 - 1,800. Releasing the K-5II was easy, involved
minimal RD, and they could say look, we did release a new camera at
Photokina...TWO new cameras, in fact.

Cheers,

RE: After reading the K5xxx reviews ...

2012-10-31 Thread SV Hovland
I don't think Nikon and Canon does it any better. EOS 7D has not been replaced,
but has received a firmware update to sweeten the pill. Nikon D300s is
certainly lagging behind and both Nikon and Canon is more or less forcing
customer to upgrade camera and lenses to the more expensive 24x36mm system.

I still think K-5 and K-5 II is the best aps-c system on the market today.

Re: K-5IIs review and comparison to K-5

2012-10-30 Thread SV Hovland
Adam at Pentaxforums is only concerned about focus speed. And that is the only
property he tested. So we really don't know how much better autofocus is in
normal light. Someone has to test focus tracking (AF-C), focus accuracy, focus
repeatability and so on.

RE: K-5IIs review and comparison to K-5

2012-10-30 Thread SV Hovland
There are already reports from K-30 users that this model is better than K-5.
And K-5 II is using a similar AF system as K-30 so I expect it to be more of an
upgrade than Adam at Pentaxforums seems to know.

My K-5 is in for a repair (lens release button fell of) so K-5 IIs is more than
tempting.

You're right Stig, but for me what AF parameters he did measure is useful to
know. I find SDM lens focussing to be pretty good in bright light already, even
on the K20D. So if low-light focus speed was made a lot better -- and it sounds
like it was -- then that puts the K-5IIs on my wish-list. That and the improved
resolution are a strong motivation for me.

WG-2 GPS log into Lightroom

2012-05-07 Thread SV Hovland
http://download.heime.org/LesWG2.ps1

Here is a link to a powershell script for converting the KML files from WG-2
GPS to something Lightroom can understand and read.
The script is reading the non standard Pentax time tags from the description
elements and writes them to timestamp elements before gpsbabel is called with
proper arguments.

Please note that this script needs some tweeking as a few paths are hard coded
into the script. You also need GPSBabel.

You have to run the powershell command 'Set-executionpolicy remotesigned'
before you can execute scripts downloaded from the net.
