Wow Mark, I am really impressed with the way the preview on Blurb looks even at reduced resolution, I really enjoy the pairings that you did,. I am honored to share pages with Christine and Larry. The dreaded phone call
Was at home yesterday and got a phone call we all hate. Can we use one of your photos? I asked how much they were willing to pay for it? Response, we are doing it for a promotion, not paying for photos. I responded, "I don't give my work away." Basically that was the end of the call. Few hours pass and the phone rings again. Same voice on the other end, "How Much?" Long story short, they bought a one time use for my price. I was very much nicer on the second call. GESO: Fall colors on the Buffalo
Spent all day Sunday jeeping around the back roads in the Buffalo River National Forest being overwhelmed by the beauty of this years fall colors. I have posted a set on Flikr, for anyone to look and possibly comment on. Had a hard time editing this set (52 shots posted.) Re: GESO: Fall Colors in Washington
I agree with Don. I like the Sunset in the Forest, best. I might have cropped some of the sky, keeping enough to continue the horizontal lines of the composition. GESO FIFI at Drake Field (sfw)
Heard a large radial engine noise outside last week. When I went out, I saw a B-29 heading for the airport with wheels down. Jumped in the car and went to the airfield. FIFI, was here on tour. Few dollars later, and I was on the flightline taking pictures. There was also a C45, a Stearman, and a P51 landed while I was there. The Apache was just passing through. GESO: Buffalo River Model Shoot.
Yesterday the PSNWA had a model shoot in the Buffalo River area. We started out at Twin Falls, then went to a log barn. A few shots are questionable for work. This is not my normal type of work, so I was trying to get some current shutter time with portraits, etc. Besides, no need to state the obvious. Re: GESO: Buffalo River Model Shoot.
Paul, I very much appreciated your comments. I didn't use gaussian blur, I used the clarity slider in LR4. Bruce also asked about the softening. This is the first time I have used that control to soften, so I may have gotten a little heavy handed with it on some of these shots. I reduced it a little on 082 and also followed your suggestions on burning and exposure. I have updated the posts on Flickr with these changes. All post work on these shots was done with LR4. David and PJ, what can I say? Thanks all Ted The eye of the viewer becomes the eye of the Photographer. Brian, My first PUG submission was in Nov. 97, I believe. It seems like we were warned a few years ago that the early PUGs were going to go away. Re: GESO of Zoo trip
Thanks for responding Larry, yes, I did do the vignettes. There is no hint of it in that lens. Yes, Walt and Bob, the eyes were a main focus of my shot. He would look directly at me for just a second, then look somewhere else. Luckily, he held the pose. Took several tries to get the timing right. Dan, I was really surprised to see the panther and the jaguar lying together. I had just enough time to set up and shoot one shot before the jaguar moved. I also liked the portrait of the giraffe. Mark, The 2nd shot of the set, the ape leaning against the post, sort of showed the atmosphere of the primates in the first area we encountered upon entering the zoo. This is an old zoo and the facilities are a little run down, with small cages and enclosures, lots of wire cages, lots of road noise from highways on two sides, and lots of areas closed for improvements but no room for expansion. I would say that this zoo is an old school zoo with all the cons that that entails. That said, they seem to be trying to take good care of the animals and making the best of what they have available. All the kids in our group enjoyed the tour and did not get bored, even the teenagers. Bob, thanks for the Tractor shot comment. I liked the scene a lot. The three chimps also made me think immediately of the Stooges also. They were the first animals we saw coming into the zoo. Jeffry, It looks to me like he had some kind of skin condition causing him to loose fur. Can't say for sure. I was so focused on setting up the tripod, camera, lens, and getting the shot, I overlooked that at the time. Oh well, that is what was there. It doesn't bother me enough to not show the shot, rather, it seems to typify the zoo. All the big primates looked as if they were in prison and thinking about how to escape. Paul and Ken, I may have overdone the vignetting sometimes, but I am doing what I feel on my shots. Sometimes I do it to control the light in the shot, other times I am trying for an old time look. I even use it to try to shift emphasis from one area to another. I will try to be more judicial in my editing of the effect. l enjoyed the family shots also, otherwise, I wouldn't have included in this group. I hope I haven't missed any comments by anyone else. Here is the link again for anyone that would care to see what we are talking about: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ted_beilby/6845816198/in/set-72157629608506957/lightbox/ Thanks again, Ted The eye of the viewer becomes the eye of the Photographer. Hello all, found a few comments that I missed the first time around. Yes, Jack, it was overcast. Even had a little rain, as you can see on the tortoise's shell. Some of the kids couldn't believe how big it was. They had no idea that giant tortoises even existed. Dave, I have always been accused of having too dark images, except when I was taking photography at Bakersfield College back in the 70's. I had to be careful, printing for school, prints were expected to have a full tonal range, while when I was printing at the studio, I had to be sure to print lighter for reproduction in the newspaper. I still like my images towards the darker side with a full range of tones. Are you comparing my rhino shot to Walt? At least Walt could fit in my car when he visited. Lens advice
Diane has given the ok for a new tele lens. I am torn between a DA * 300 and the 60-250. Anyone have any thoughts on them? Remember, I shoot a lot of airshow work and so the 300 would be nice for the reach, but, the 60-250 would be convenient for the zoom factor. Just how sharp is the 60-250? Checking in.....
Hi all, Haven't checked in much since GFM. Went on an extended trip with Diane the week after I got home from GFM. We traveled to California for a family reunion in Sacramento. Then to San Francisco for a couple of days. Then up Hwy 1 to Oregon. Throught the Columbia River gorge and up into Washington then Northern Idaho for several days visiting family. From there we went down to Moab, Utah for a couple of days at Arches and Canyonlands. Then home. I have been shooting around home, but have not posted anything online. I got an email from my Mom telling me that my Dad has fallen and broken his hip, so now, I am on my way back to Calif. Will spend some time in Sacramento area but I haven't decided how long I will be staying and where I am going to go afterwards. Larry, are you up for a meetup in the near future? Anyone else Tonight I am in Tucumcari, NM, and should be in Sacramento in a couple of days. Will be checking my email daily, hopefully. Ted The eye of the viewer becomes the eye of the Photographer. Re: Shot from GFM this year
Peter as I stated earlier, I submitted this to the contest for fun The shot was done in camera in my K 7 on HDR2 setting so there is not a set of exposures. I did work with it a little in Lightroom but did not increase the saturation. I boosted the black level and also vibrance a little. I also boosted recovery and clarity sliders. Little bit of graduated on the foreground and sky and that was mostly it. I did have misgivings about the ghosting on the ridge so I did try to lighten the sky to reduce that some. GFM openings for Nature Photography Weekend
Just got an email from Landis. They have had many cancellations and have exhausted the waiting list. Hello all, This is a first since I've been at Grandfather...we've had so many cancellations that I have exhausted the Waiting List and we actually now have empty seats available for NPW. We've probably had close to 30 people who have had to cancel their registration the last few weeks due to weddings, graduations, emergency surgeries, etc. And understandably, some folks who were on the bottom of the waiting list have gone ahead and made other plans for the weekend. With that said, we have about 6 seats open at this time. Please pass this information on to any folks you think might be interested in coming at short notice. You'll see the NPW page on grandfather.com is barebones at this time. We've had some technical difficulties as we get a mobile version of the site ready. I'll attach the schedule and contest rules for you to share with any interested folks. Here are the two options that are available. Please have anyone interested contact me by e-mail or phone ASAP. NPW Participant: $115 Pre registration fee covers 3-day park admission, Saturday evening meal, a seat in the auditorium for the programs, and a CD for turning in your contest entries. Guest NPW ticket: $95 covers 3-day park admission, Saturday evening meal, and a seat in the auditorium for the programs. If a person registers, we still have these passes available for any family or friends that they wish to bring with them for the weekend. These passes do not include a seat in the auditorium for programs. Guest 3-day park admission only: $30 adult, $15 child. [reg. $45/$21] Guests for dinner Saturday night: $10 Thanks! I am back but way behind
Hi all, Lots of reading to catch up with the list. The Photographic society that I belong to along with groups from Little Rock, Ft. Smith, Tulsa, and Springfield put on MAPSYM (Mid America Photographic Symposium) this last weekend. I was in charge of getting the setup complete for each presenter. The main presenters were Jenifer Wu, a Canon Explorer of Light, and Bill Fortney as well as several regional photographers. It was a pleasure meeting both of them. Many of you know Bill and know what a caring person he is. He sat down with me and went through my Airshow book page by page. He really gave me great positive feedback on the book. Really a good feeling. Now just a couple of weeks before GFM to get caught up. Can't wait. Will be nice to be a participant rather that running my butt off trying to get everything ready for five presenters each cycle. Once I get back from GFM, will have about a week or so before having to head to California for a family event. Haven't gotten that trip planned yet but do know that we have to visit the coast, drive up to Idaho, and want to go to Arches/Moab area for some time. Going to be a busy month. Mark Well, it seems that there will be lots of room at PDML Central. I am planning on being there but there aren't too many others that I know of. Looking forward to seeing you and Dave and any others that show up. I have to be in California June 19th so will be getting lots of miles during June. My Airshow Book
First official sale of my book on Blurb today. The discount I wrote about was on Blurb, not me. Sold to the pilot/owner of the Stearman that I shot mostly just the engine of. He emailed me to ask if I had shots of some planes at an earlier airshow here in Fayetteville, maybe another sale. Ted The eye of the viewer becomes the eye of the Photographer. 25% discount for Blurb
Until April 13th, you can get a 25% discount by entering code GMA on checkout. Wish this had been in effect when I bought my last book. Mark, when is the annual going to be ready for purchase? Any one want a copy of my airshow book? Oh well, can't hurt to ask. Just 60 days to GFM. Ted The eye of the viewer becomes the eye of the Photographer. Re: 25% discount for Blurb
I got this from watching Good Morning America. I don't know if it is through the 13th, they showed Until April 13. It is supposed to be for viewers of GMA but there is no way to check that, right? Re: Choosing long telephoto lens
Most of my aircraft in flight shots were taken with my F 100 - 300 hand held. Those of you who know me know that I have very shaky hands. Sometimes, I hang my monopod under the camera. I do this with the head locks loose so the monopod is free to swing if I want to go to portrait orientation. I do not extend the leg, it is just there for mass to overcome the tendency for the camera to be moved. It seems to help me be more steady but does get some strange looks from other photographers. I don't know if anyone has ever used this technique before but I have used it this way many times. Ted The eye of the viewer becomes the eye of the Photographer. Re: I just uploaded a book to Blurb.
I want to thank everyone for all the positive response on my efforts with this book. I have had several comments that have expressed interest in buying the book but no sales yet on Blurb. May try to see if I could get enough interest to make an order myself and sign them and send out rather than pay the expensive shipping that Blurb charges. Have to see if I can get 10 commitments. Brian, to do the two page spreads, I just used the software that Blurb supplies. Put the same shot on facing pages, resized them, and used the cropping lines to adjust. Seems to work pretty good. It looks to me that the P 51 may have lost a little bit, the W seems to be cropped a little too tight. Christine, thanks for the WOW. I try to bring out the beauty that I see in aircraft rather than just documenting the machine. Larry, I am glad to be on your hate list, especially 140 times. Thanks for the post Mark. Paul, Walter, Cotty, Thanks all for your appreciation. Bob, I would love to come to Oshkosch, but I really prefer smaller, more intimate venues so there is access to the aircraft and better aerial shots. Richard, thanks for your comments and for forwarding the link to your friends. Steve, I really do appreciate your thoughts. I knew there was some redundancy but I also hope to use this book as a catalog and so the similar shots give more choices. As far as the captions, I am not sure what happened, I thought I had everything pretty consistent but the Blurb software is pretty clunky and was giving me fits at times. By the way, there are two of Doug's shots in there too. Once again, Thanks to all. Ted The eye of the viewer becomes the eye of the Photographer. I downloaded one image and see ISO 100 and 1/60s on a shot from some distance and on a somewhat less than bright day and scene. Hand held? I've deleted your downloaded image. Jack Jack, My K 7 was on the tripod and since the shot you looked at was ISO 100, I know it was the K 10D with the DA 18-250. For me, that lens is soft no matter what shutter speed I shoot it at. I was using the K 10D and that lens to have a wide focal range, while I had the F 100-300 on my K 7 on the tripod. Neither of these lenses are very sharp but that is what I have for longer focal length work. Need to sell a bunch of work and make some $'s to get some good long focal length glass. Diane seems to think we need to pay the bills and eat more than buying new lenses. I had the K 7 set for expanded dynamic range so it's base ISO was at 200. Re: DA 16-45 f/4 lens
This lens is my go to when the 21mm isn't wide enough. I originally got it to replace the FAJ 18-35 kit lens that came on my *istD. Was a reasonably priced upgrade to that lens. Re: Stochastic photography
For the past couple of days, I seem to keep encountering references to stochastic photography -- or spray and pray if you will, and it's piqued my interest. It's not that I'm considering actively pursuing the practice so much as I wonder how much my current style (method?) could actually be considered stochastic. Having never worked in the vicinity of another photographer before, my days out shooting with Ted Beilby were, as I said, educational. We took nearly diametrically opposed approaches. Clearly, Ted came out with better quality shots than I did. He was much more methodical and exacting and produce much more highly textured images than I did. At the same time, I came out with some images that, while not as polished as Ted's, did have some redeeming value -- at least I thought they did. I was so arrested by the sheer amount of potential subject matter that I felt I had to get as many different shots as I could in order to get a reasonable account of my experience, so I shot hand-held, almost exclusively. Knowing that I'd have at least several hundred shots to go through at the end of my trip (also, due to a relative lack of PC processing power and memory), I stuck to shooting single exposures in jpeg. Some subjects, I chose to take three or four different shots from different perspectives and focal depths, while others I shot once or twice and moved on. And, that's typically the way I do things. A large part of the reason for that is that I simply don't trust what the camera shows me on its display to be an accurate depiction of what I'm going to see when I load it onto the computer. The same goes for my perception of any given scene at the time. I come away with rough approximation in my mind, and when I get home, I'm usually fairlyclose, but never seemingly dead-on in my expectations. And, of course, a good bit of what I do shoot simply defies staging in any practical sense. I'm not going to be able to tell a butterfly how to hold its wings, or a bird where to position itself within my frame. So, I have to make snap judgments and several attempts. To the extent that I'm able to dictate composition, I do make a fairly diligent attempt at it. But, at the same time, I don't try to control every minute detail -- essentially because the vast majority of the subjects I shoot are in an environment that simply defies control. So, I was just curious as to the thoughts of the folks on the list as to how much my approach would be considered spray and pray by more seasoned photographers, and how much it would benefit if it were less so. Thanks for any input anyone has to offer. -- Walt Walt, just a few comments on you post. I started shooting seriously more than 30 years ago and learned a different approach to shooting due to the fact that I was shooting film. Some of the people I go shooting with now would go through a roll of film in a matter of minutes if they were shooting film rather than digital. They truly are shooting and praying. When I was shooting weddings, I had to get the shot in one shot if possible. sometimes, like groups, I would shoot more than one shot because of blinkers, etc. but, for the most part, we had to get it right the first time. Plus, we were shooting medium format so there were only 12 shots per roll. I also am forced to using a tripod physically due to my shakiness. I did shoot at times without the tripod, as I am sure you remember, but my success rate is much lower when I do so. A tripod forces you to slow down, compose more carefully, and pay more attention to you exposure as well as improving overall image sharpness. This is a shooting style that takes effort to adopt but is worth it in the long run. It also means less time in post, culling and editing, and processing your results. The trust in your equipment comes with use and time. Slowing down and examining your settings and composition before you shoot helps you to learn what your equipment is going to reward you with. As far as staging, true, you can't tell a butterfly how to hold it's wings, but you can determine the decisive moment but that is a skill that everyone must develop. Be it a butterfly or a drag car launching, the photographer pushes the little round thingy to quote Doug. I am not saying what shooting style is best, only how I approach a shoot. You have to develop your own shooting style as well as your own visual style, and I do believe that they directly influence each other. Well, off the soap box and thanks for your patience. Re: PESO: Drowned Church
The lack of sharpness in this image makes it hard for me to really like this image. I think it is a very interesting subject and I realize that it was probably shot on film and scanned so that may be part of the reason for the lack of sharpness. I probably would have composed the image a little differently if it was possible. The center heavy location of the church is what bothers me the most. I would have lowered it in the frame and had it more to the left. Those are just my thoughts on it. Re: Peso: critter
Ann I like this shot. It seems to give an idea of personality to the snake. I just wonder if the color might be a little muted. Re: Stochastic photography
Boris, my photography instructor at Bakersfield College, Bertil Brink, instilled the realization that if you got one good shot per roll, you were doing well. He emphasized previsualization. GESO Lights of the Ozarks 2010
Diane and I went up to the square here in Fayetteville, and photographed the annual Lights of the Ozarks display the city does every year. Basic photo info: K 7, handheld mostly except one shot using a trash bin for support. mostly 800 iso, DA 21mm mostly, DA 40mm for two shots. Didn't use the tripod because I wanted the spontaneity of shooting handheld. http://beilbyfinearts.blogspot.com/2010/11/lights-of-ozarks-2010.html Ted -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Friend has a problem with a *ist DL
I was talking to f local sculptor yesterday and he asked me if I could id what the problem is with his camera that he didn't have with him. He said that it exposes very dark. He called Pentax and they told him to reset to defaults. He said that when he did that, after the first shot, it reverts back to dark. Any Ideas? I think I may have to get in touch with him and arrange for a hands on session with the camera before I can tell him anything. I wonder, does the DS or DL have the batteries in the base. My *Ist D acted funky when that cover came off and the battery was out. I may have to ask him about that. Any thoughts?? Re: Friend has a problem with a *ist DL
Paul Ewins said: Metering accidentally set to spot? I did that again on the weekend. That could be a thing to check, will pass it on to him. Brian Walters said: Sounds odd. I have no clue but the DS/DL use AA batteries loading via the base into the handgrip. The battery locking system is pretty secure but if it breaks, the batteries would simply fall out. On my *ist D, there is a circular battery compartment holding a flat quarter size battery as well as the regular batteries. That is the one I was referring to. I checked on DP Review and the pictures of the DS and the DL showed no such battery compartment on them. So I answered my own question. Thanks to you both for sending your thoughts. Re: geso rendering preset
I was enjoying this set when Diane said,Let me see that. It was the Palace Theater shot. We both liked it very much. My 40 pretty much lives on my K 7, except when I am working with mulatiple fl's like when I took Walter on our shoots. Even then, it was on the camera when we got out of the car at Picher and my shot of the church was done with it. http://www.flickr.com/photos/ted_beilby/5175082337/ What I liked about your shot was the color rendering... very nice. Would be interested in knowing what presets you are using? Re: The right tool for the job
Larry, I like this one except for the spot right in the middle of the frame (porch light?) A little work and this might be a really good shot.
