NO! NO! NO! I had one and it was a POS. Go with an Olympus EPL-2 from some place like Cameta Camera. They have them refurbished sometimes at really good prices. Re: Anyone have the Pentax X-5?
Yes, I am sure the one I had was crap. The concept is good and with sensor technology what it is these days it should have been a winner. But it was very bad! I shot hundreds of pics with it and only one was somewhat OK. The electronic vf was So BAD. Totally a toy. The rear screen was ok, but then you look at just about anything else out there and it was much better. Just not worth the money. I was just at Camera camera and they have EPL-2's and EP-3's for around 200 and less. These are either new or factory refurbs with full warranty. Some have kit lenses as well. I am sure there are a lot of good choices out there. Others have made excellent recommendations as well. I would hate to see you get stuck with the E-5 and not be happy with it, which I am sure would happen. Walt On Sat, Sep 21, 2013 at 4:27 PM, eactiv...@aol.com wrote: Are you sure? Re: X-5, the price is great, and it has a lot of features, and it has that retro look. So I'd be found to find the controls easily enough. Unless people aren't understanding that I want a PS for travel purposes. This would not be my main camera. I've decided to stick with Canon for another year (just get lighter lenses). None of the others I've looked at (on line) really match, or come close to matching, DSLRs yet. And, well, I am not ready yet to switch to a whole new system, if I have serious reservations. Which I do. Despite the word being verbotten around here, I've been very happy with Canon over the years. Re Oly, yes, a lot recommend the 17mm for a true compact camera on the PENs. But the electronic viewfinders are expensive, even if you get the camera cheap. And I haven't turned up any used ones yet. Marnie aka Doe :-) In a message dated 9/21/2013 12:57:46 P.M. Re: Which second party camera system do you like? Mini-survey
Marnie, I switched to the Olympus OMD and EPL-2 several years ago. I have been extremely happy with the quality and size advantage vs standard DSLR's. Now I have the hots for the new Panasonic GX-7 that is coming out the end of this month. I more than likely will get just a body as it also is M4/3 and all my lenses will fit :-) These all have viewfinders, but I have to admit they aren't fully equivalent to a good DSLR. Some early reviews of the GX-7 indicate its viewfinder is essentially as good as a conventional DSLR variety. We will see I guess. The M4/3 system of lenses, when you factor in the available offerings from Oly and Panasonic make for a very good variety to choose from. I have the 9~18 (18~35 equivalent), the 14~42, 40~150, and 75~300 zooms which give me 18~600 equivalent. I also have several primes including a full frame Fish Eye. All of this fits in one bag that is much smaller than what I used to carry when I had the Pentax K10 and K20. Worth looking into for sure. Walt On Fri, Sep 6, 2013 at 2:15 PM, eactiv...@aol.com wrote: Second party? Third party? Not sure what to call it. I am just about to sell my Canon camera, and only have one lens left too. Mainly due to a financial crunch and needing the money. (Boy, it will be ODD not to have a camera. Had one or two since 2001.) I expect my financial situation to ease next month. So I thought, okay, time to switch systems again. I really liked the Canon lenses I ended up with: good color, sharpness, and focal lengths. I had one L glass. BUT.. the Canon system is a wide-mouthed mount, and the lenses tend to be heavy. Being female, as I get older I am losing upper body strength, and I just want something lighter. I COULD switch back to Pentax. But not the K-5, I like spending $400 or so on a camera, $600 max. Truthfully the camera body doesn't matter that much to me, they all do similar things now. Good resolution, ability to shoot video, and some low-light capability is good enough for me. Once I learn a body, I pretty much forget about it when I shoot anyway. I am much more interested in LENSES. Especially zooms, I haven't had any primes for a long time now. I will probably start with two lenses (what I usually do), and then work up from there. I've considered mirror-less, but I really need a viewfinder. I've also considered micro 3/4. I am OPEN. A great many of you now have second or third party camera systems now. Like the Sony NEX. 1. If you have a second (or third party) system what has been your experience with it? What do you like about it? Dislike about it? 2. What lenses (zooms in particular) do you like/dislike? 3. If you are a die-hard Pentax fan, and feel compelled to recommend Pentax to me, ;-), which of the smaller bodies would you suggest? Likes/dislikes? 4. What zooms would you recommend? I tried to be brief so you won't have too much to read, but it's hard. Marnie aka Doe :-) I When I thought about making a decision, I though, heck, ask on PDML and get some experienced input. It proved to be fine other than I could never get the FAX to work, but that was because of my network provider and I was too lazy to pursue the matter. A few days ago I ran out of black ink, and I knew the color was low as well, so off to Costco I go. The ink pkg there, one color and one BW was about 48 bucks. A ripoff, we all know! Well, now it is packaged in separate pkgs, either 3 BW or 3 Color, 102 bucks each Bull Hockey! I left and went to Walmart. There was the one of each for 43 bucks. So I picked one up, and then my eye saw an Epson printer, sorta like my HP, but no FAX, significantly more compact, a better paper path, 5 inks, and it was wireless Smart Print, so I could use my IPAD with it :-) 52 bucks. Done deal, I said, and grabbed one. Get home, set it up, and it was super easy and worked the first time. It prints from both IMac and IPAD without any hiccups. I am pleased. Yesterday the wife hands me and old 8x10 BW and says to scan it so I powered up the HP and went to the application folder to find the one I had always used. Thought I had it, double clicked, and it offered me a scan preview page for the Epson. Oh, what the heck, I says, I'll try it. Put the print on the platen, close the lid, click the mouse. Ten seconds later there is an icon on the desktop of the print. I open in PS and it is gorgeous. I mean perfect. Even no dust spots! I make a print, I put a copy on my FB page. Re: PESO - Redwood Quiet
Yes, Redwood Quiet would be a good choice. Many years ago my wife and our dog and I spent two weeks camping the northern CA redwoods as far north as Eureka and across to Shasta. The second night we were in Miles Standish State Park, nestled at the bottom of a huge stand of immense redwoods in our 12' Scotty camper. I didn't want to leave! The quiet and solitude was intense and I have never slept so good in my life. I would give anything to be able to go back there for a few more nights Walt On Thu, Dec 20, 2012 at 10:52 AM, eactiv...@aol.com wrote: One of the thing I like about Redwoods, it is usually very quiet standing under them, peaceful and calming. Re: GESO: Panoramas from Tekapo
Thanks for posting, David. As many here may remember, I like to talk about my times in NZ back in the mid 70's :-) My first trip to Mt. John was a wonderful experience that I will never forget. We were able to stay the night and view through their fairly new 40 scope that was only slightly hampered by a nearly full moon. After several hours I went out to get a smoke. As I walked down the hill a short distance, Lake Tekapo below became almost fully visible, but my mind was still on the heavens above. The southern milky way was fully overhead and as my gaze swept toward the horizon I became disoriented, as the milky way kept going !! I then realized that I was seeing the sky perfectly mirrored in an utterly glass clear lake. I was mesmerized by the stunning view, and the memories are still vivid. Your pictures truly bring justice to a spectacular place. Thanks again! Re: OT fifty worst cars of all time
In 1962 I was in the Navy stationed at the Ordinance Test Station in China Lake, out in the Mojave desert. I was barely 20 years old and had eyes for a young lady that worked in the photo lab where I was, along with several hundred others. I was flirting with her one day, threatening to pull her pony tail. She whipped around so quick, shoved all 210 pounds of me against the wall, and simply said in a stern voice, Don't! I didn't, apologized, and sheepishly left the room in a hurry. Several hours later she quietly asked me to follow her outside. There she explained that the year prior, she had taken a 61 Corvair over a cliff and the rear scalp and skull cap of her head was lost somewhere in the canyon below where the car stopped, on top of her. She had had a blowout, and she readily admitted that she had overreacted and overcorrected, causing her to spinout and go over the side. She never did blame the car, but her parents did, and after many years in court was awarded a settlement. We became close friends after that, but we never talked about the accident again. I knew it was a very touchy subject with her. And, I never mentioned the pony tail again :-) In the late 80's I had a chance to buy a later model Monza with the turbo charger, but was simply afraid to do so. Wish I had now. My understanding is that there were indeed some issues with the early corvairs, though not nearly as bad as a particular egocentric attention whore would have liked you to believe. As I said, some of the most interesting cars were also on the list. The elite was designed to win races, and it has been argued that if a racecar didn't fall apart on the cool down lap, then it was too heavy making it more robust than it needed to be. Chapman was absolutely brilliant in that way, and I'd love to see a modern version of the Elite, made with modern materials and technology. Out of a motor the size and weight of the Coventry Climax 1.3 (originally designed for water pumps for fire fighting) you could probably get two or three times the horsepower today, on street fuel, without forced induction. I'd much rather have a six cylinder e-type (Jag never made a car it called the XKE) than a v-12. They were faster. I'd love to upgrade one with modern engine management, and a few other tech upgrades as a track car. David, thanks for posting. I found the video interesting, even inspiring. Re: OT: Are all men predisposed to be car junkies?
Sweet looking Mercedes! Yes, I will certainly enjoy HER car, as she could care less. In all seriousness, I had to get her something as the old Saturn's brakes just were not up to snuff. I was so afraid she would get herself into a situation that she couldn't stop. I didn't notice that much until I bought a new Elantra last year. The brakes are really good, but what I have learned is that almost all the new cars with 4 wheel disc's have very good brakes. The better fuel economy is a big help as well! Re: OT: apple cinema display converter
Yes, I am talking about an uninterrupted power supply. So, no matter if it is a surge or a power loss, the battery backup provides an uninterrupted power source. I do so with the tv because it is an LCD screen and power surges and power loses can damage the lcd's. Mine is rated at 500 watts so more than enough for the TV and cable box. Walt On Fri, Jul 13, 2012 at 11:58 AM, Igor Roshchin s...@komkon.org wrote: Walter, You have a TV on a UPS? Why would you do that? I suspect you are not talking about uninterrupted power supply, but rather about a surge protector. Typically, many devices die not when the power goes down, but rather when it comes back up. At that point, all the equipment starts at once, and there is a large inrush current in the circuits. Most electronic devices are prone to that. Usual precaution for the devices that cannot be plugged into a surge protector or UPS, is to unplug them when the outage occurs. Many computers, controllers, etc. are lost that way in research labs. Re: PESO: Fleet Week Marines
That was shot on Guam in mid 1967 I believe. I was a Navy Photographer stationed there in a Reconnaissance Squadron Photo Lab. We were tasked to do crash scene photography as needed, and I was on call that day. The plane was one of two that were taking off together (side by side, one trailing), and the lead plane blew a left main tire almost halfway down the runway. It caused them to skid off the runway toward the brand new international airport on the civilian side of the airfield. Luckily it hit a concrete blast deflector that stopped it from going through a fence and possibly into the building. BTW, even though I was Navy, in my later years as a Warrant Officer, my favorite military people were and still are, Marines! Thanks, Dan! Re: OT: Road Trip
To tell the truth, PSE is a great program. But since I picked up the OMD, it will not open the RAW files. Aperture does, and at the same price essentially, I felt it was a better choice. I will keep PSE 9 on the computer as it does a good job in other areas that Aperture won't do, such as pano's. Re: OT-One of my pics at www.PlaneaDay.com
Thanks, Jack. I was on the ground along the taxiway where the planes were making very close passes. Most made several flyby's, at varying speeds and altitude. This was probably what they call a photo pass, where the plane is very low and slow. I was shooting my EPL-2 in sequence mode, trying my best to follow through a viewfinder that momentarily blacks out for a second or so (Darned electronic viewfinders!). I got three good shots, but this one against the darkened sky was a keeper for sure. I managed to shoot over 150 shots of which a couple of dozen are very good to excellent. It is a yearly event at the nearby Titusville Executive Airport, sponsored by the Tico Warbird Museum. I try to attend each year and they always put on a good show. Lots of aircraft from WWI up to current technology. They also had a B2 Stealth bomber made several flyby's. Very impressive aircraft and it photographs more like a UFO than a frontline bomber of today. :-) Walt On Tue, Mar 20, 2012 at 11:03 PM, Jack Davis jdavi...@yahoo.com wrote: Really nice shot. Re: monitor calibration upgrade
Paul, I am curious as to how you like Lion? I haven't upgraded yet but am considering doing so. Do you find much difference. Why did the upgrade/purchase of Office 2011 necessitate the upgrade to Lion? Walt On Wed, Mar 21, 2012 at 8:33 PM, Paul Stenquist pnstenqu...@comcast.net wrote: I finally had to purchase office 2011 for Mac. Too many problems with comments, hyperlinks and other peripheral items with an older version that relied on a conversion utility to read dock files. Since it's my livelihood, I decided not to experiment with open office or other alternatives. So that opened the way for an upgrade to opsys 10.7, Lion. Good enough. Except that obsoleted my trusty Spider 2 Express calibration tool, which has kept my monitors palette right in sync with my printers for years. Seems it only works on Macs with 10.6 and earlier. Since I had so much good luck with that product, i purchased Spier Pro 4 from BH for $169. It nailed the color palette, and since it also sets luminance, I didn't have to do the fiddly workaround to set the brightness that I previously employed. What's more, it will calibrate a second monitor, so my Apple Cinema Display 21 now matches the iMac 27. Not absolutely necessary, since I use it mainly for tools and function windows with PhotoShop, but a nice convenience. I'm pleased. That brings us back to the Spider 2 Express. As I said, it does a good job on color calibration, at least it did on all my Macs. I think it works on all PCs, but not sure about that. It's free to anyone in the U.S. who wants to pay postage. Hate to discriminate against those in other places, but you probably don't want to fool around with potential custom problems and postage that almost exceeds the worth of the item. Well, we got stuck in some deep rotten snow and had to dig ourselves out. While we were doing so a Kea came up to us and we were amazed at how tame he/she was, seemingly. It was very curious at everything we did, even jumping on the shovel as if to help. It never got aggressive, nor was it a nuisance really, just persistent! They're a very curious bird that adapts readily to human activity... and they also have a real knack for pulling things apart so you have to keep a very good eye on them. http://www.multi.net.nz/kea/ Apologies to Frank for the subject line but his recent kitten photo inspired me to post this :) I didn't take the K10D so I took it using Janet's little Panasonic compact and gave it a highlights shadows tweak in Photoshop.
