Thanks. Three years later it's hard to remember my motivations, but that was

Larry, there are some really nice photos here.

For me, though, the many near-duplicate images dilutes the impact of the whole

Devil's Punchbowl

2021-04-25 Thread Larry Colen
It’s been a few years since I discovered Otter Rock between Newport and Depoe
Bay. Somehow on previous visits I totally missed Devil’s Punchbowl (not to be
confused with Devil’s churn in Perpetua).

At high tide, flushing the punchbowl:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/51139487905/in/album-72157719023434163/

A couple days later, closer to low tide when you can get into the punchbowl:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/51138604123/in/album-72157719023434163/

The big challenge at low tide is trying to get photos with the crowds of other
people who also want to check it out.

Another lesson learned is to not only bring something to dry splashes off the
lens, but to actually check it for splashes

Full set:

2006-09-30 Thread Shel Belinkoff
So, why not paint in a sky that's similar to the one that was in the
original scene? Actually, you could have made two exposures, one for the
scene and one for the sky, and used the original sky.

FWIW, over the past few months I've taken a few shots of the sky for just
the very purpose. Several pics I've posted have fried skies painted in,
sometimes with the sky that was in the scene, sometimes with one of my
"stock" skies.

It probably would have, but unfortunately not at 15mm :( It's
largely a scanning issue: the sky is also white on the slide because
the weather was overcast, but it was hard to deal with such a wide
dynamic range while scanning. I want a DSLR that comes with an auto-
bracket-to-HDR function.

I do have a split ND, but I don't think I've ever used it. I dislike
the fact that I have no choice as to where the split occurs. I
looked at setting up a Cokin filter that I could slide up & down in
its holder, but decided that I didn't like the idea of plastic filters.

Not far from the Devil's Punchbowl fall we also have a Bridal Veil
Falls:
http://www.bluemoon.net.nz/photo/photodb/view.php?p=449
I'm not sure how close you can get to that one; after the trek out to
the first one we really couldn't be bothered finding out. I took
that using the 6x7 at 180mm.

When shooting the Devil's Punchbowl, I had to face downstream while
wiping the mist off the lens, then whip around, get a quick shot then
whip back to wipe the moisture off again. There's a reason why I
chose the K2 over the Z-1p! I'd have loved to use the RB67, but
after all the effort of lugging it up that track, I wasn't prepared
to open it up with all that water.
