A very pleasing image, Rick. The Japanese Maple is well known for
spectacular Autumn colours. Something we don't see in the Lowveld.

The structure at the top is another stairway (up I guess). It actually
ends before the floor. There are also lights in it, the "ceiling," one
on either side. When I look at it now it's hard to figure out, but that
is the way I remember it. Because I debated walking down to shoot the

Re: PESO - Down In Indiana

2017-07-04 Thread Marnie (aka Doe)

Ditto, what she said. Double.

For me, the fence, because it is parallel to the viewer and is not a
leading line, doesn't add much. Truck? Maybe. I think it would have been
a great photo without fence and without truck. Just sky and house and
barn and lots and lots of field. But preference given to the sky.

My $.02.

RE: PESO - Down In Indiana

2017-07-03 Thread John Coyle
I went back to this one in view of the concerns some have mentioned, and I must
say the truck
doesn't bother me: in fact, I think it adds to the composition. My eye went
immediately to the red
barn, as one might expect, and then travelled to the right along the arc to the
truck, before going
to the sky. My only quibble would be I would have gone as close to the fence
as possible to look
over the top of the rusty wire and posts!

The barn placement troubles me.
It must be the strong color and near
center location.
The insignificant wire fence has no role and the far elements fail to supply
the necessary weight to
count them as points of interest.

I disagree. The barn is the focal point, the others add to the scene. For
instance, Bruegel's paintings & Giles' cartoons mostly have things going on
in the background (often naughty) which adds interest & compels the viewer
to look a bit deeper.

This looks great on my computer, and it’s substantially sized. But it was small
and didn’t play well on my phone. Don’t know why.

Great shot. Love the fence going one way, and the truck moving off in another
direction. And of course the barn is a classic, and it’s perfectly placed in
frame. Well done!

Striking. A bit of everything there - the threatening sky, the mowed field,
the fence, the farm sheds, a Semi plus a few wild flowers for interest.

2017-07-01 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
With that "big sky," are you sure it wasn't Montana?
The sky is, to me, the main feature of the image, but I think it is
inclusion of the foreground fence that makes the shot special.

Re: PESO - Down In Indiana

2017-06-30 Thread Marnie (aka Doe)

Great sky.

I usually love your shots, it's strange to me to say I have some
quibbles. Something about the placement of the barn, re fence and
passing truck isn't pleasing to me. (Too many focal points? Not sure.)

I would have walked closer to the fence to leave it out. (I'd say crop
it, but don't think it can be done now. At least not without cloning.)

Take with a grain of salt, Marnie aka Doe :-)

Agreed, that's a different thing all together. They're doing urban
exploration. I've always wanted to explore an abandoned building of
some sort but wouldn't fancy going down a sewer. Too restricted. And
smelly.

Rarely am I roused to comment on a picture shown to this group of
friends by one of our friends. Mostly, this is for the best, and this
would be one of those time when staying silent would be for the best.
Sadly, I do not always serve anyones best interests, and this is going
to be one of those times.
First, a preamble. I don't pretend to get street photography, but I
do feel that a good photograph will speak directly to me through my
eyes, and I will understand it, at least on some level.
Unfortunately for this photograph, it does speak to me, but in a whiny,
I want to be edgy, but I come up short sort of way. This image screams
Look at me, look at how clever I am. I have Mr. Urban Dog Walker and a
down and out Hobo in the same picture, and look at how cleverly crooked
I am framed. This is the picture that walks into the bar and no one
will talk to because it has nothing to say, but keeps saying it anyway.
This picture is like Boy George. Cool once to a mindset more interested
in sizzle than steak, but just a talentless schmuck to those of us who
cut our teeth on the real thing.

Fuck, you couldn't drink this picture good.

HAR!!

First, a preamble. I don't pretend to get street photography, but
I do feel that a good photograph will speak directly to me through
my eyes, and I will understand it, at least on some level.
Unfortunately for this photograph, it does speak to me, but in a
whiny, I want to be edgy, but I come up short sort of way. This
image screams Look at me, look at how clever I am. I have Mr. Urban
Dog Walker and a down and out Hobo in the same picture, and look at
how cleverly crooked I am framed. This is the picture that walks
into the bar and no one will talk to because it has nothing to say,
but keeps saying it anyway. This picture is like Boy George. Cool
once to a mindset more interested in sizzle than steak, but just a
talentless schmuck to those of us who cut our teeth on the real

Bill your commentary on this photo was rude, offensive and uncouth.
At least it was moderately entertaining to read.

Subject: PESO - Down at the pond

The beavers have pretty much taken over the stream that runs through
the park near my home - the pond is very slow moving and covered with
lots of plant life now. Lots of little fish hiding in the reeds and
lots of dragon flies about. This one is a fair crop - they are small
buggers.

Doug,

Here's the whole series, with no post-processing:

The pedestrian and the guy with the bike entered from a side path between shots
5 and 6 (which is the one I posted).
