Re: PESO - River Thames

2018-09-12 Thread Igor PDML-StR

What I am talking about would reduce the white space and actually
might make the photo appear larger on the phone screen.

Although that might depend on how the mobile browser deals with that.

But if you have one of the phones with a humongous screen and
incomprehensible screen resolution (iPhone X has 2436x1125), then
the situation could be different... But even in that case this much white
space around the photo is not needed, IMHO.

96 is the magic number. Make it so that the long edge is 96 units, eg 960
pixels, and everything else falls into place.

Re: PESO - River Thames

2018-09-11 Thread Igor PDML-StR

1600 x 1200 is too large.
Even on the screen where I have 1920x1200 resolution, it is very seldom
that I have the browser window open to the full screen, as I usually do
many things in parallel on my computer.
My laptop has even smaller screen resolution. So, your 1600 pixels do not
fit in the browser window (and laptop's screen).
Instead of the photo being aligned on the left side, there is a huge empty
margin on the left.

Actually, the image itself is 800x800px. So, having that table 1600 px
wide is rather strange.

Here is how your page looks in my browser:
http://42graphy.org/cotty/SC-page.jpg

Overall, my personal opinion is that a photo should be easily visible on
the screen of the targeted audience without scrolling (either vertical or
horizontal).

A lot of people around me are using laptops. Until recently, most laptops
were with XGA screens (1024x768), and then some with the "wide-screen"
aspect 1280x720 or 1280x800.

So, I was trying to keep the photos within 900x600 px, to allow for the
browser frame, headers, etc.
Gradually (and especially since many laptop screens are now 1366x768 or
higher), I've relaxed those to 700x700 for the square format.

Ah, interesting. No I haven't heard you rant on this before ;-)

The page is created in Softpress Freeway 7 which is rather dated and is a
WYSIWYG editor for simpletons like me. The page is 1600 by 1200 pixes and
aligned centre so I'm at a loss as to why you would have to scroll
sideways?
Happy to take advice as I just wanted a simple white page as a template

Haar sadly not.

There was a veritable plethora of swans there that day. I like a bit of
quirkiness in my photographs so was waiting for something unusual. I excluded
the other birds from the frame and waited for this one to drift further to the
bank so that his body was not visible - then when he was just a head an neck, I
started shooting. The other frames he was looking straight at me, which
mimicked the church spire better, but I didn't like losing the classic curl in
the neck, so went with this frame. I chose a square crop as the spaces left and
right added nothing. I like it so er flew with it.

The funny highlight of the shot is the white bird head peeking from its

your otherwise "classic" tranquil image.
Did Godfrey work as the "trap" for it?

BTW, the webpage layout is a bit annoying: it has this empty white space

As for "Thames", that often brings up this old joke that I remember
since my childhood:
(Being lazy to type it up, I've found this, slightly different but very
similar version on the Internet)

The Master of the house is comfortably installed in an armchair in the
library, reading a newspaper. Suddenly, John, his butler rips the door
open and shouts, "Sir, the Thames is flooding the streets!" The Master
looks up calmly from the newspaper and says: "John, please. I have already
told you before, if you do have something important to tell me, first
knock on the door, then enter and inform me, in a quiet and civilized
manner, about the issue. Now please, do so." John apologizes and closes
the door behind him. Three seconds later, the Master hears a knock on the
door. "Yes?" John partially enters the room and with a gesture one would
make when welcoming and ushering in somebody and water flowing over his
shoes, he announced, "Sir, the Thames."

Cheers,

Igor
