I find that the pleasant garden surroundings at GfS add a lot to all
of the many works exhibited there, and particularly to Johnson's.

Re: PESO - Big Kiss

2014-12-16 Thread Richard Womer
Well, I must disagree with Paul and Ann. In photography, we are
challenged in reducing 3 dimensions into 2. Johnson does the opposite,
taking a two-dimensional image and translating it into three. This
involves imagining everything on the side of the subject we cannot
see, and making it all balance and work. His skill at doing this is
especially apparent in his smaller pieces, and especially those
displayed indoors at the Grounds for Sculpture.

Go have a look before you dismiss it as kitsch. The guy has something
to say, and does it with imagination, whimsy, and astonishing
craftsmanship.

This is all from my gut, not from a dictionary mind you.

Somehow I'm not offended by extreme sendups of truly great and serious works
of art if they are playfully done and show a kind of originality of their

Johnson's stuff doesn't have those qualities.

I think that Seward Johnson's sculptures based on great art and great
photography are effective and compelling. They are all done with a
bit of tongue in cheek and humor, and should be viewed that way. The
often bring the originals to life in a different fashion, with an

Re: PESO - Big Kiss

2014-12-14 Thread Bob Sullivan
Ann,
It was a different time and place.
The photo captured the exuberant reaction to victory over Japan.
Almost everyone forgives the sailor.
I spent 2-3 hours waiting at the sculpture in San Diego.
Plenty of the older adults tried to recreate the pose. It was fun.
Even a tour group of Japanese teens tried recreating the pose,
when the chaperones weren't looking!
Everyone gets the pose wrong.
The woman is completely off balance, supported by the sailor
with her arm just dangling, not returning the gesture.
Regards, Bob S.

Re: PESO - A Kiss for Mom

2014-11-09 Thread Ken Waller

Thanks Paul -

I don't think I've shot at an ap smaller than f8

I assume that is f8 as set/indicated on the lens and not the effective
aperature as a result of the convertor.

I'm interested, as you can see, as I'd like to be able couple the convertor
to my 600 and don't want to spend the money if AF won't work with the
smaller aperatures of that lens - I already have both the A 1.4XL 2.0XL
convertors and that lens becomes handicapped with those convertors on action
shots with that lens.

I believe that the old 1.7 AF convertor had a limit for AF to operate.

I assume that is f8 as set/indicated on the lens and not the effective

I'm interested, as you can see, as I'd like to be able couple the convertor
to my 600 and don't want to spend the money if AF won't work with the smaller
aperatures of that lens - I already have both the A 1.4XL 2.0XL convertors

Re: PESO - A Kiss for Mom

2014-11-09 Thread P.J. Alling
The limit was more camera dependent, if the open aperture is close to or
below the ev threshold for the AF sensor, auto focus will be
problematic. In bright light I've never had the AF 1.7x fail achieve
focus with any lens and camera body I've tried it with. It really
starts to hunt with the *ist-Ds in dim lighting with any lens with a
maximum aperture of f4.0 or slower. I never noticed an issue with it on
film bodies, but then again I never had insanely high ISOs to work with
with film.

The documentation states that it's limited to lenses with a maximum
aperture of 2.8 or wider.

A good (longish) macro, coupled with a good normal to wide FAST lens
usually works best. Macro lens stopped down as far as needed for DOF,
and the other lens wide open.

I have had good experiences with the A* 200mm macro with the FA 50mm 1.4
or the M 50mm 1.7, as well as the M 28mm 2.8.

The DFA 100mm works OK too, optically, but the mechanical stability of the
combo leaves a lot to be desired (and magnification is less of course).

That's a very striking shot and testimony to how well your technique
worked - though composition and timing of the shot are what really make
it.

I did my first snow crystals with stacked lenses (on a spotmatic, no
less, since I mistakenly thought that an electronic camera would not do
well in sustained cold.) I did quite few experiments with stacked
lenses, usually with extension, in the late 90's for magnifications of
4x to 10x. A good 50mm reverse mounted on the A* 200mm macro worked well
for 4x.

For 2x in the field these days my preferred solution is a macro lens and
2x teleconverter - keeps infinity focus and can be quite sharp. I am not
shooting macro in MF, though I *did* buy a set of Pentax 67 extension
rings a few months ago - haven't tried them out yet.

I got mine at a local camera store - they had them loose in a drawer for

In a pinch I've used them as step up or down rings for filters - which
have to be mounted backwards on the double male rings. Lots of good

I think it was around 2006 I started to play with the 645 optics for macro.
IIRC, Mike Wilson has a picture of me applying gaffertape to couple two lenses
together... But the 645 lenses were otherwise just collecting dust at the time.
Actually, the only person to have run film through my 645n in ten years is some
guy from Israel, also in 2006. :-)
But I digress... My point is that experiments are required to find optics that
fit well together for stacking. One can be very positively surprised with
results from what one already has lying around!

One reason why I prefer stacking over other solutions is that
exposure
automation keeps working. So you don't have to stop down the lens
manually.

Another reason is that P-TTL keeps working. Well, sort of; you have
to
diffuse the flash to avoid overexposure because of the short working
distance, but that's okay because you really don't want specular
 highlights and sharp shadows anyway.

And if you're patient, you might actually make AF working. But you
have
to keep the camera very steady. :-)

The knack is to find to lenses that go well together. According to
John
Shaw (Book; closeups in nature), lenses in the normal range are
best
for reversing, and moderate tele lenses best for attaching to the
camera.

Personally I recommend using a tele lens with IF because it makes
 working distance more predictable.

That's actually a very _good_ question...
I've seen many different descriptions. Reversal ring, reversing ring, reverse
adapter, male-male stepring, reverse coupling ring...
It's a complete mess. Most of the time, the thing people have in mind is an
adapter with a filter thread on one side and a lens bayonet on the other. You
know, to reverse-mount one single lens. I remember looking through hundreds of
listings on eBay to find what I was after. I bought a couple from China for
next to nothing, but when I wanted more, the seller was gone.

Since going digital I have a number of Cokin rings lying about. So two of those
and a generous dose of epoxy became my solution.

I wonder what the Sigma EX 28mm f1.8 would do reversed on the front of

One reason why I prefer stacking over other solutions is that exposure
automation keeps working. So you don't have to stop down the lens manually.

Another reason is that P-TTL keeps working. Well, sort of; you have to
diffuse the flash to avoid overexposure because of the short working
distance, but that's okay because you really don't want specular highlights
 and sharp shadows anyway.

And if you're patient, you might actually make AF working. But you have to
keep the camera very steady. :-)

The knack is to find to lenses that go well together. According to John Shaw
(Book; closeups in nature), lenses in the normal range are best for
reversing, and moderate tele lenses best for attaching to the camera.

Personally I recommend using a tele lens with IF because it makes working
 distance more predictable.

Playing catch up again on my Paws.

I like this one Gianfranco. It may be a bit to contrasty, but it gives it an
artsy feel to
it. Like
the framing and the off angle view. The guys expression says a lot to.:-)

I wanted to submit something for St. Valentine's Day since
yesterday but I was unable to find the picture I had in mind so
I eventually leaned to this other, older one:

SJ I've never seen Frank kiss, but it looks feasible... ;-)

Do you mean It or Frank ?

Certainly, with the bunny ears on the GFM photos Frank was just *lovely*

;-)

Good light!

I thought about this shot recently, when reading the thread
about the emotional involvement (PAW: Jazz Guitar, for those who
don't know what I'm talking about). This one was taken with a
Kiev 4am in early 1995 or late 1994, not sure about it (I only
had a working print available to scan, no intention to dig in my
archives...)
Comments are always appreciated.

Ciao,

Gianfranco

PS: I know, it's too contrasty. I guess I did like it that way
when I first printed it. One day or another I should print it better...

Offended?

No, I'd say humbled, because I wish I could take 'em like that! vbg

Now ~there's~ a shot with real emotion! I love the unusual body
positions, and the apparent disinterest of the fellow lower right. Oh
yeah, the legs and bench in the background are about perfect.

I don't find it too contrasty, if only because it works (for me) due
to their black clothes.

Great pic!! And, topical, given the day. g

cheers,
theriault

PESO: A Kiss for St. Valentine's Day

2005-02-14 Thread frank theriault
Gianfranco's post of a Valentine's Day Kiss of a few minutes ago makes
me think that this is a good idea. So, I'll do it, too. I initially
posted this almost a year ago, but I did mention it the other day in
another thread, so my apologies to those who saw it there, or are
still bored of it from last March.

But, really, of all the photos I've taken, it remains one of my
favourites, and is most appropriate for this day.

I think everyone else who has a kiss pic should post, too.

cheers,
frank
