Re: Re: K-5 firmware v1.03

2011-03-13 Thread Jens
True, Paul, I jsut discovered myself.
Whar I like is being able to shift foucpoint while looking in the viewfinder. I
don't think I could not do that with the K-7. Now I can, provided I do NOT lock
the chosen focus point with the OK button. That's actualy very nice and useful
:-)

To access til four Fn buttons, I just have to lock the focus point in advance.

I know some camera reviews have had the same complaint.
I think the focus point selection is one of the most important/used switches
on a camera - next to the ON/OFF and the Focus/Relase, button, this is the
 most important switch.

When I do studio portraits, I often use the focus selection to help focus
correctly - which means I can still use AF for portraits, otherwise it would
be impossible to do portraits with the camera on a tripod, since the eye(s)
of the model very rarely are placed in the centre of the frame.

I use focus selection all the time. The select switch become easy to use with
practice. Even using select, I don't think I could properly place the selection
point on a model's eye with the camera on a tripod. I never shoot on a tripod
in the studio when working with a model. It makes spontaneous framing
impossible. With the speed of flash exposures, I find it totally unnecessary.

No. And I didn't try any screwdrive autofocus lenses in low light before
installing the firmware either -- at least not that I can recall. So there's
not much point in it now. However, I will at some point.

My only SDM lens is my 16-50, and that is just too slow for low light
photography. With the 1.8 on the K-5 I was able to shoot at 1/15 - 1/25 second
at ISO 12,800 last night. I got lazy and didn't even pull out the monopod.
With the 31/1.8 autofocus did a great job in optical, even with the focus
assist light turned off. It was just too distracting for the dancers to leave
it on. In live view autofocus was hit or miss. If it tried to zoom in on a
dark section, then everything was lost, if it tried to autofocus where there
was more light, then it did fine.

Bearing in mind that I was mostly taking pictures to try out the camera, before
I've even really had a chance to learn it, rather than trying to take great
photos, here are some of my better shots from last night:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157626253302714/

I hope that as I learn the camera, I'll be able to improve on it.

Paula Abdul was one of 3 judges on American Idol -- a spin off from a
British show that became an obsession with aspiring
singers in NORth American and from which many other countries spun off
from that. She left the show last year
and subsequently hosted/judged something for dancer that I can't recall
the name of.

She's still a babe. she was a bit ditzy on the show though . Last hear
the show tried 4 judges. didn't play well. This year
music producer Randy Jackson is joined by another USA babe who is
wonderfully talented herself as an actress and singer -
Jennifer Lopez (new York gal) and Stephen Tayler or is it Tyler? Aging
rock star, who, alon gwith Lopez made fans not miss Paula or Simon Cowel.

It's one of those phenomena that is both revolting and inspiring at once
and certainly stands as something emblematic of a
crumbling society and yet... you can't turn away... because under the
grime there is sometimes a diamond.

thousands of hopefuls, often many pathetic ones, try out... this year
amazingly the top twenty four are actually really good singers
and performers... now it is down to 12... and, unfortunately, it will
probably be more of a popularity contest from now on as - alas -
America votes. The judges comment, judge, etc.. but then for two hours
every week phone lines and now the web will be jammed with
calls.

But unlike the contest Larry entered and the PPG , you can vote as often
as you like. 60 million votes (I think thats right) or
60 million people voted. This ast week 40 million , and they are only
down to 12.

I couldn't resist replying .. as embarrassing as it is to admit it, I
watch the damn thing. and I've picked the winner 5 years in a row...
2 years ago I picked him early on. Too bad I didn't put more than $1.00
on him.
It not necessarily the person that should have one on talent or true
potential for monetary success they handicap it in Vegas .

It's like junk food. You don't want to see it.

Re: K-5 firmware v1.03

2011-03-10 Thread Boris Liberman
Upgraded yesterday. Did some dim light shooting. Got convinced that +5
correction for my FA 31 may be dialed back to 0. Found one book on my
bookshelf that makes my K-5 behave unevenly. The center sensor would
focus on the book in dim light only in horizontal position and wouldn't
do so if camera is held vertically. One of the off-center sensors that I
tried was fine though.

Since I wasn't too bothered by AF as it were, I'd say I don't observe
any steps back so far. It also seems that it is focusing slightly more
confidently now, although this is purely subjective observation.
