Peter, it is a matter of finding a way to persuade. Persuasion may be very indirect. I much rather I did not even have to think of these things, because they are far beyond realm of my knowledge. My heart goes out to all Israelis who live with the fear of rocket and other terrorist attacks. I can't imagine what that's like. There is no justification for what Hamas does: it is criminal. HOWEVER, Israel's response is completely out of proportion, heavy-handed and seems bound to be ineffectual or worse. Here's what I know: Hamas is prepared to sacrifice innocent Palestinian civilians to win world opinion and sympathy. The government and military of Israel is prepared to sacrifice innocent Palestinian civilians for all sorts of reasons that are probably best discussed elsewhere. As of last night 154 Palestinians and 0 Israelis have died since this latest escalation started. Each side blames the other and claims total justification for their actions. Someone needs to step up and choose peace. No one seems prepared to do that. Accordingly this horrendous situation. Will continue. Boris, I think of you every time I hear of yet another escalation in Israel. The last time we spoke of this off list (several years ago) Hamas rockets didn't have the range to reach your area. Re: Today morning, just recently
From what I see the problem there is a bit more complicated than simply controlling Hamas (even if that were possible). Oh, Ann, it has nothing to do with geography. It is merely a progress of Gazans in terms of rocketry... Previously their rockets couldn't fly as far, not they fly twice as far, all the way to Haifa. Though to get to Haifa they will need to strain themselves a bit. Thank you for your kind words... Re: Today morning, just recently
You have expanded upon what I was trying to say most eloquently, Boris. Finger-pointing is not what I intended; quite the opposite. I believe that most civilians on both sides of this divide only want peace, safety and security. Of course you, living in the midst of the tumult, have a unique first-hand perspective on what's happening. Of course being a friend, my personal concern is the safety of you and yours. Stay safe and take care. All the best, frank On 13 July, 2014 2:35:27 PM EDT, Boris Liberman bori...@gmail.com wrote: Please, let us absolutely not engage on this kind of discussions on the list. Dear Boris, I am aware of the situation. I thought about you and your family. I just happen to visit my computer less frequently these days. Although, of different sort and uncomparable to yours, my country seems to be on the verge of some serious disorder. I just fail to find a proper way to express myself... Remaining calm was something I thought I was good at until this age. It may not be any longer. I hate watching this building up of anger... everywhere. Hope you all do well and hope we shall see a better world soon... Below is the statement of the fact. It is not my intent to convey any emotional sub-text whatsoever. Times are approximate, except the very first one. * 5:50 - my alarm clock rings; I swipe it to silence. I decide to linger in bed a bit longer. * 6:00 - Julia wakes up and starts her morning routine * 6:10 - we hear rocket alarm, I jump out of bed. Julia grabs the kids and heads to the stairway of our house. According to rear command, we have 90 seconds to get to safety. This gives me time to pull on my yesterday's t-shirt and trousers. We climb down two stories, it seems that everyone in our building (4 story, 40 years old) agree that the area between the first and second floor is the safest. First floor is one immediately above the ground floor. We're alone as no one is awake at this time of day. * 6:15 - we hear some booms. It is interceptor rockets handy work. Anat is counting. * 6:20 - I suggest we return. Girls start to stand up as they were sitting on the floor. We hear another rocket alarm. The girls return to sitting on the floor. * 6:25 - We hear some more booms. Anat keeps her count. The doors around us start to open as our neighbors drag themselves out of bed. Few minutes later we return home to start our day. Now comes the emotional part. It's been about a week since this has started. Only one list member, blessed be his name, has written to me off the list. Frankly, your silence is deafening... Carry on. They most certainly don't. It is in their charter. I mean, it is a well known fact. For them, nothing is equivalent to a negotiated settlement, and neither of these is an option. Thank you, Bulent. It seems that the Middle East as a whole is moving in the very wrong direction. So, each country gets its own share of trouble. Not that I like it any way. I am thinking of you more often that you might imagine. Boris On 7/13/2014 11:00 PM, Bulent Celasun wrote: Dear Boris, I am aware of the situation. I thought about you and your family. There are really two kinds of people in the world, those who think you can negotiate with groups who have non-negotiable demands, and those who know better.
