Ouch!

You might look into insurance. I have a “rider” on our homeowner’s policy that
covers my cameras and lenses. It wasn’t expensive.

fall down followup

2024-05-18 Thread Larry Colen
I mentioned that a few weeks ago I helped a woman catch her dog, in the
process, with the heavy camera in the handlebar bag the bike fell over.
Shortly thereafter I noticed some issues with the lens focusing, but they
seemed to correlate with low contrast situations, the camera wouldn't solidly
lock focus on mountains through the haze. A couple days later I noticed the
smart function dial on the K-3 III was broken.

I took the camera and lens to the local repair shop today, I hadn't noticed
that the barrel of the lens was actually broken:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/rW86kLCAo8vWTRKa9

The estimates were something like $450 for the lens (which I can buy used for
half of that), and $700 (even more than precision) for the camera body.

Sigh. I think that for now I'll replace the lens with an 18-135, much less
expensive, water resistant, smaller, and I think sharper at least within its
range.

When I have some time, I may try taking the lens apart and doing a kluge fix
myself. In any case, if anyone has either an 18-135 or 18-270 they're looking
to offload, let me know. I'm also beginning to think that I should just pony
up the dineros and send the K-3 III to precision in case there is anything else
I missed.

Stan, I started to list my favorite shots in your first gallery, but quickly
realized that there were too many to list. The second gallery is even better;
but for me the standouts are 12, 28 (imagine, they had Starbucks back then!),
19, 30, 32, 39, and 40.

Excellent shooting!

2021-10-25 Thread Stanley Halpin
Thanks for your comments Dan, Paul… We had a good trip, good to be out of the
house, new subjects to shoot.
We got lucky, we had originally scheduled/booked the Mackinac Island trip for
this week but were able to shift the reservation by four weeks when some
openings popped up. The coordinator told me tonight that the weather there is
not at all so wonderful right now.

Yeah yeah - you could certainly prune a lot for max impact, but I liked
going along for the ride.. reminds me of
when I lived in Maine - similar mix of vegetation ... and geology -
those lonely ponds and the wooden structures -
the guy in the fire look out  - dashing through the slide show as you
were going along  your route...

You'll definitely have some hard choices to make for the next fair.

Larry, what you refer to as magenta fringing is the color that comes out in
some of the seed heads as they age and dry out.

I have another specimen that shows a lot more of the reddish color, because
of its location. I do not have an image of it available to me at work, but
will check tonight from home.

It's not so much the green in the stalks as the magenta in the

I had a nice conversation with George Utley once. He was very funny, and
quite foul-mouthed.

It occurred at a friend's wedding in NYC, back in 1963, almost two decades
before the premiere of the Newhart Show, and, of course, it was Tom Poston,
but the wry sense of humor was all George Utley.

Also, regarding the other photo: I've never expected a photo of the

Agreed

That was about the only thing I didn't like about the
digital Leicas.

I find the M8 slightly awkward, but the typ 262 is no problem. I don't really
know why. However, whenever I see them next to the M3 it's obvious that a
return to those dimensions is the right decision.

The M10 does look interesting, certainly would buy one
if I had a lottery win!

And the Leica R8 body that I wanted so badly in 1998 and simply
couldn't afford (it was over $2600, never mind the lenses!) was sold
to me in minty mint mint condition, in the original presentation box,

cost over $800 in 1969 when I first saw one and fell in love with it
(a Nikon F Photomic FTn with 50mm f/1.4 lens was $415 then, to give
you a sense of the scale of its price) was tossed in with two of the
Leica R lenses I bought in 2013 at no charge—nobody offered the seller
a dime for it. My beloved Olympus E-1, a professional grade body in
2004 that cost over $2200, currently sells for about $80.

I was really hoping that as Leica was able to fit a digital M into the
same footprint as a M4 that the next Pentax digital would fit into the
footprint of an LX or maybe a Super Program. I was disappointed, but
then life is full of disappointments.

It will be interesting to see how the digital Ms hold their value, particularly
the M10 forward now that the depth of the body has reverted to the original
size.

My feeling is that when the thin version of the typ 262 comes out, assuming I
can afford it, it should be the last camera I buy, with retirement in prospect.
Providing of course that the hardware etc. is good enough to outlive me.

The photos I took last weekend were with the Olympus E-3. A fantastic camera
and lenses, but 8 mpix seems so niggardly these days. How spoilt we are. But I
do prefer 2:3 to 3:4.
