Re: getting a DS
Thanks for all the info everyone! I will try to respond to the posts that needed it here. D.G. That looks like a good deal. Thanks for sharing it. Dave Having sent a camera with lens and a flash (on separate occasions) to the bottom my self I'm not sure if staying away from Tom Van Veen will quite be sufficient coverage, but it's a start. :) Godfrey Thanks for all the good info! I know what you mean about the FA lenses being expensive. William Robb That is an idea but (aside from the fact that I don't think that my parents would go for paying half again the price in order to support the local economy) the only camera store in the area is basically a Nikon convent that is peopled by D2X toting snobs whose only interest in you is caused by the contents of you wallet, so I don't go in there that much. :) Ralf Sounds like a fun trip! I agree with you entirely about my parents (especially now). :) I'm not entirely sure what you mean by with your socks on but I don't think I'll ask. And... Could some one illuminate me. The DA 18-55 is f3.5 to 5.6 but at what focal length is it an f3.5? Thanks again, Francis
Re: getting a DS
Approximate zoom - f stop of the 18-55 kit lens 18 - 20, 3.5 20 - 30, 4.0 30 - 45, 4.5 45 - 55, 5.6 I suggest getting the kit. The lens is quite good enough for many things. It is small, light and fits the camera nicely. Not my best, fastest, widest or longest lens but it spends more time on my DS than any other of my lenses. If you don't end up using the lens you can usually make money selling it on eBay. Powell And... Could some one illuminate me. The DA 18-55 is f3.5 to 5.6 but at what focal length is it an f3.5? That is what I thought (although I still don't get why a fast wide is more expensive that a fast normal and yet variable aperture zooms are always faster at the wide end) and hoped but I just wanted to make sure. As for getting one, it's not my call/credit card, but I'm hoping for it. :) Thanks again, Francis
getting a DS
Hi guys, For my birthday my parents gave me (as well as a Manfrotto 190CL) a certificate to an *IstDS. Zaweee! (You should have seen my face when I opened that card.) So I have a few questions. 1) Do you have any recommendations of places I should look? (There are some on e-bay but there doesn't seem to be that many big retailers listing it) 2) I can't stomach the idea of having an f3.5-5.6 lens as my only normal/wide, so do you know of a faster wide (20mm or so) that I could get for a similar price? 3) How much memory will I need to store 100 or so RAWs? 4) given that I don't have a insurance plan that I could tack chattels on to, how could I (affordably) insure it against dropping it over board and other such human error? 5) Is there anything else that I should know? :-) Thanks in advance for any forthcoming ramblings, Francis (is hyperventilating)

I have 3 1 gig Kingston Cards and i beleive they hold 90 Raws. Oh wait. I have the D and it uses CF cards not SD cards. Belay that order. 4) given that I don't have a insurance plan that I could tack chattels on to, how could I (affordably) insure it against dropping it over board and other such human error? Stay away from Tom Van Veen for one.g 5) Is there anything else that I should know? :-) Use lith's or good rechargable batteries. Re: getting a DS
I think they are getting harder to find now. Look and they can be found. 2) I can't stomach the idea of having an f3.5-5.6 lens as my only normal/wide, so do you know of a faster wide (20mm or so) that I could get for a similar price? FA20mm lenses are somewhat costly and difficult to find used. A wide- normal prime that I'd go for would be the FA28/2.8 AL for around $220, an FA35/2 AL is a perfect normal for $299. 3) How much memory will I need to store 100 or so RAWs? With the DS, a 1G SD card will store 93-97 RAW format exposures. A 60x card is all you need to maximize the camera's write performance. 5) Is there anything else that I should know? :-) Use lith's or good rechargable batteries. Presuming you intend to take a lot of pictures every week, a set of AA NiMH batteries rated 2300mah or greater plus a good quality charger is the most economical. With these batteries, kept charged properly, you should see 500-700 exposures per charge. If you tend to use the camera less frequently, AA Lithium disposables last just about as long as CRV3 disposables and tend to cost a little less (in bulk packaging, typically $8-9 per set). With these batteries, you should see 1100-1300 exposures per set. Godfrey

Congrats for your birthday and for having such nice parents. 2) I can't stomach the idea of having an f3.5-5.6 lens as my only normal/wide, so do you know of a faster wide (20mm or so) that I could get for a similar price? My DS came in a package deal with the usual kit zoom. Haven't used that lens for more than a dozen shots as opposed to well over 4000 pictures taken with a selection of manual Pentax lenses ranging from 15 to 200 mm. My favourites are the M4/20 mm, the A1.7/50 mm, the M2/85 mm, and the M4/200 mm. There is a more recent 2.8/20 mm lens if speed is important to you. 3) How much memory will I need to store 100 or so RAWs? A 1 GB card stores about 95 RAW pictures. 5) Is there anything else that I should know? :-) The SD sure is some of the greatest fun you can have with your socks on. I've just returned from an extended weekend trip to the French side of the English Channel with around 1800 shots in 5 days. A detailed account will follow as soon as I've prepared a few pictures to illustrate it. Ralf -- Ralf R. Might be something to consider, if you want local camera stores to be there when you need something. William Robb
Re: getting a DS
I got mine a couple weeks ago from Tri State, I noticed they were selling some on e-bay-buy now- so I went to their web site and there they were, about $40 usd cheaper. I ordered and the DS was on my door step 3 working days later.
