Re: COMMENTS: Pillion passenger - Home, James!

2013-01-12 Thread Alan Cole

Firstly, many thanks for the encouraging comments. I will follow the posts
with interest look forward to the annual book.

I am a retired Analytical Chemist living in Phalaborwa, a small Lowveld town
in the extreme NE of SA supported by copper phosphate mines. The climate
is hot with about 530mm rain per year. I love being in the bush we are
blessed with having the Kruger Park right on our doorstep. In Kruger, I find
many tourists are more interested in flaunting their expensive equipment
than actually taking photos.

My photography has been quite amateurish has progressed from a Brownie box
one of those fold up things (medium format!) in my youth to an S1a at
university later to K-mount. I did my own processing in the B/W days but
stopped when I changed to colour (prints slides). Only the ME Super still
works I have been shooting a couple of rolls a year.

In 2011 I was given a C*non 500N with short long Sigma zooms decided a
C*non digital would be the answer so I bought a 1000D at a bargain price on
a sale. Sadly, the old Sigma lenses are not fully compatible can only work
in AV or M modes at max aperture. Plan B was a S/H K110D body on which I
could use the the FA 28-80 100-300 from the dud Z-70. So far I am quite
happy with this combination can also use all the other lenses in M mode.

I feel a need to expand my photography beyond the stereotyped family
holiday stuff hope the list will help me to do that. I have never tried
street or studio photography. Game photography can be exciting but it takes
luck patience to get unusual shots which tell a story. I still find myself
trapped in film mode haven't got used to the idea of taking a series of
shots yet! And then - post processing - still a lot to learn there.

Best regards

Alan

KRUGER PARK FLOODS

2013-01-20 Thread Alan Cole
Over the past few days, the ITCZ ventured as far south as the Natal coast
bringing with it upwards of 300mm rain to the eastern parts of SA. All the
major rivers are now in flood. Thankfully it is now receding. Have a look at
this link:

http://www.latestsightings.com/kruger-national-park-floods-2013/

The one image shows the Letaba river (at the camp) almost up to the record
flood level of 2000.

I am hoping to make the 50km trip to Letaba camp tomorrow.

Re: OT: This weekend (Crocodiles)

2013-01-24 Thread Alan Cole

Limpopo Floods:

A number of crocodile farms suffered the same fate because they are mostly
near major rivers. As all the rivers are inhabited by (plenty) crocs, the
farm losses wouldn't make much difference. Most are small would soon be
eaten by predators anyway. Catching crocs in the wild is no easy task
unless, perhaps, they call in Crocodile Dundee.

People had to be evacuated by helicopter from many low lying areas (the
focus has now switched to Mozambique). The Shingwedzi river completely
flooded the camp of the same name almost to rooftop level. In this case,
wild crocs were seen swimming around between the chalets!

Re: FA 28-80 FTW!

Zos, I was elated to see your image and then along came Bob to ruin my day.

I still routinely use an FA 28-80 and an FA 100-300 (relics from a Z70) on
my K110D find them quite adequate.

As you say - they are basically free.

I saw some of it on the TV news. Pretty awful. Take care, guys.

Looks like that's restricted to Phalaborwa.

For the pundits - what would you call snow if it fell here? (Trick

Re: GESO: Blizzard at my house a question re: cameras in winter

2013-02-12 Thread Alan Cole
I posted your image of a runner in the snow at my running club's Valentine
function last night. People were amazed considering it was still 30°C in
Phalaborwa at 5pm. Many people here have never seen snow or experienced very
cold weather. If we ever have snow, it would have to be Baked Alaska.

Subject: GESO: Blizzard at my house a question re: cameras in winter

Hi all,

The past few days have provided a nice break in the usual action
around here. I took the camera out yesterday, along with my shovel,
thinking I'd get a few neighborhood scenes... Well, it was harder than
I thought it would be, just getting out of my own yard... though I did
consider strapping some tennis rackets to my boots as snowshoes...

Anyway, a few shots here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/23028562@N04/sets/72157632736739251/with/8464137448/

Now for my question...
I learned long ago that it's a good idea, after being out in the cold
with your camera, to bag it up in a ziploc then let it come to room
temp for a couple of hours before using/retrieving sd card, etc. All
in the name of preventing condensation/moisture from getting into the
camera messing with the electronics, etc.. Here's what I wonder:
1) How many of you do this?
2) For a weatherproof camera, like the k-5, is this less necessary?
Especially when combined with a WR lens...?

Thanks for your thoughts...
:)

You have a knack photographing cities! I can well imagine a medieval tax
collector would have a house like that. The canal shot is interesting -
on's eye makes the railings horizontal so the boat looks like it is going
uphill.

Re: PESO: Cocky Elephant Bull

2021-09-03 Thread Alan Cole
John, as Bob said, Askari is a Swahili word for a soldier in a support role
like a bodyguard or mercenary. The Italian word "Ascari" is simply a
spelling variation. Elephant herds are Matriarchal. Bulls are chased out of
the herds when they become sexually mature at about 15 years & live
separately in small groups. Older breeding bulls are typically found in
groups of 3 with two younger bulls known as Askaris. When the bulls are in
Musth, they make forays into the herds for breeding purposes. Fatal battles
between breeding males are not uncommon. In the Letaba Camp Elephant Museum
there is a skull with a tusk right through it! Anyone's guess what actually
happened there.

Re: GESO: Sable Dam 19/03/2022

2022-03-20 Thread Alan Cole
Thanks, Ann. Yes, they are. This Roller is endemic. In summer they are
outnumbered by the migratory European Rollers which look very similar but
without the Lilac. Some people call them Blue Jays.
I suppose Spring is in the air over there? At last it's starting to cool
down a bit in the Lowveld - thank goodness. Last week we had 84mm rain out
of nowhere.

Re: Maui Blog 6

2022-01-29 Thread Alan Cole
I use to do that as well until my Lab passed on in 2020 aged 14. At our
ages we decided against another dog. We now feed a tribe of Feral Cats!

If I can find another slowish (about 6min/km) running partner, I may
resume. The younger & quicker members of our Club get annoyed with me
because I hold them up. Long gone are the 4min/km days.

One race which I really enjoyed was the annual Skukuza Half Marathon in the
Kruger Park (with an army of Rangers to keep us safe). Quite tough with a
lot of dirt roads. It is actually a fundraising event for conservation
projects. I ran my 20th in 2014 in 01:58 when I was 71. I'm really
considering a comeback next year when I am 80 for my 21st Skukuza (even if
I have to walk half of it - they give you 3hrs. if you need it) & probably
my Swansong.

There has only been one "incident" I am aware of in the 30 odd years of the
event. A pride of Lions wandered onto the route on an out-and-back section
around 15km. in about 2000. The rangers stopped the lead runners while they
chased to Lions away but it took about 10min so they ended up with a
pile-up of about 50 runners before they could let them go. I was still on
the way out when the group jogged past in the opposite direction joyfully
in song as Blacks do. There was no proper open category "winner" as such
that year. The older age-group categories were unaffected.

e-mail woes

2022-02-01 Thread Alan Cole
For some reason I cannot post or receive from pdml@pdml.net using
c...@lantic.net but all seems to be well from wisselstroom8@gmail .com.
Mails from the latter appear normally on the Empathy Archives & then,
immediately on wisselstro...@gmail.com but only hours later, on
c...@lantic.net.

My ISP tells me that c...@lantic.net is being blacklisted because of
"excessive traffic" from pdml@pdml.net. Resetting the account does not help
because it immediately becomes blacklisted again.

I will contact my ISP again today. If they cannot resolve the problem I
will be forced to unsubscribe from the PDML on cole@ lantic.net

No problem. I found it anyway. The difficulty with Laptops is the
mini-keyboard, hardly designed for men's fingers. Ladies with nail
extensions manage much better.

Now, the photos. Well captured. Must be a very time consuming process. They
have to do it because those big fronds weigh quite a bit & could cause a
serious injury if hey dried out & fell naturally.

PESO: Sandbathing Speckled Mousebirds

2022-02-01 Thread Alan Cole
I am posting this tale because I have been having severe e-mail
difficulties of late. Hopefully it will reach the list. If it fails from my
Vox account I will try my g-mail account.

This photo is not of much merit & is merely intended as part of the story.
A heavy crop of a shot with the K5 & Sigma 170-500 @ 500mm. About 10 of
them in that hole. They shot off as soon as they heard the shutter. They
know I hate them & hurriedly fly off whenever they see me!

Growing veg. & fruit in Phalaborwa is problematic because of the Mousebirds
& Monkeys. The Mousebirds go for anything soft, even the hearts of small
Pawpaw trees. The locusts of the Lowveld! Aluminium foil plates hung from
poles helps a bit. The local "swarm" is about 40 strong. The Monkeys love
Avos & Mangoes & even dig out carrots! I grow all the susceptible veg.
behind wire now.

Yes, Dan, I know it. I've been a runner all my life but as I approach 80 my
body has said "enough". I phased out by walking for a few months. More time

Re: OT: Fire in Phalaborwa

2023-09-20 Thread Alan Cole
Thanks Ann.
The community is assisting wherever needed but there are a lot of political
undertones too. The Muni is claiming they did all sorts of things
whereas in fact they did very little. None of the Fire Engines were working
so the Mine fire teams had to be called in. The delay was IMO the main
cause of the extensive losses. Also, the water reservoir was depleted so
water pressure & flow from the hydrants was very low. Sadly, this is how
South Africa is land wide today.

Ann, the problem is that the florets only open at night so some form of

Re: Let's test the list!

2023-12-09 Thread Alan Cole
In SA with up to 8 hours Load Shedding per day & subsequent switch on
surges, the insurance claims have skyrocketed. Mostly TV's, Fridges &
Aircons. The insurance companies have now "eliminated" their risk by
insisting on a surge protector fitted to the DB by a certified electrician.
Too expensive for most of us so we now have individual surge plugs on
sensitive appliances.

Re: wishlist items

2023-12-06 Thread Alan Cole
Nice stuff - toys for boys! But how technology has progressed.

Eons ago I had a 6" reflector mounted on a heavy wooden tripod with a
manual equatorial mount. One had to slowly rotate a knob on the end of a
flex drive to keep the object of interest in view. Crude by comparison but
it worked.

PESO: A strange looking bird

An African Snake Darter at Lake Panic, near Skukuza Camp, Kruger Park.
Unfortunately back lit. These birds are closely related to Cormorants but
swim with their bodies totally immersed giving the impression of a swimming
snake. The second image (by a fellow photographer, Ian van Romburgh) shows
that very well.
