Re: February PUG Countdown

2019-01-28 Thread Brian W
Yes - been pretty hot here over the past few weeks. In western Sydney there
have been many days of 40C (104F) and higher. 39C predicted for the next three
days, then we might see it cool down to the mid 20s to mid 30s for a while.

Strangely, though, my PUG entry for Feb will be from the USA

May and June PUGs - Changes to Submission deadlines

I'm going to be travelling during May/June and wont be able to compile the PUG

I've had to advance the deadline. On the other hand, I'll be deferring the June
deadline for a couple of weeks.

Deadline for June submissions: June 12 (Theme - Abstract)

Re: New toy, lens adapter question

2019-06-02 Thread Brian W
I bought a few cheap adapters of ebay - K mount, Konica, M42 - they all do the
job well enough but I've never found using adapted lenses much fun. Apart from a
Konica macro lens, I haven't used any other adapted lenses regularly even though
I have lots.

Focus peaking helps but does the E-PL1 have that?

Thanks, Darren. It took me quite a while to see the possibilities in that photo.
I came across it in the archive recently while looking for something else and

I've also got the original Q & the K-01. The Q is my take-anywhere camera,
simply because I can fit the body, 2 zooms and a couple of spare batteries into
a ridiculously small pouch. The K-01 produces fine images but both it and the Q
are virtually unusable in sunlight. Neither can come close to my two Olympus
OMDs. My K-5 rarely gets a workout these days and I know for sure that I'll
never buy another DSLR.

Hi Ann

Congrats on the photo sale - don't think I'll get a chance to see the film down
here, but you never know...

I've been on Fosamax for some time - just got to remember to take it 30mins
before eating and remain upright during that time. Yes - and not fall down.
Pity I forgot about that last one a few weeks ago :-) No permanent damage,
fortunately.

PUG submission received!

Heading for Ireland & the UK

2019-04-19 Thread Brian W
G'day all

My wife and I will be travelling around Ireland & the UK during May/June,
starting in Dublin and ending in London where we'll be from 7 June (leaving on
10 June). Sadly, our time is pretty limited there (only two full days and my
wife has a full program of galleries & museums to visit!) but if anyone has an
hour or so to catch up for a beer or a coffee, let me know.

This trip has been a long time coming. Should be fun!

OK

Flying into Dublin on 3 May. Four nights there, then car hire and heading to
south west coast, up the west coast via Galway to Donegal, back to Dublin.

Flying into Inverness from Dublin on 17 May for a few nights, then up to the
Orkneys, back down to Edinburgh. Another car hire on 28 May, travelling to the
south coast via Wales ending up in Salisbury on 5 June. Then train to London,
arriving (Waterloo) on 7 June.

As I said, we only have a short time in London so suggestions on places not to
be missed would be gratefully accepted.

Re: Heading for Ireland & the UK

2019-04-24 Thread Brian W
Thanks for that great advice, Bob. I only wish we could have organised more
time in London.

The hop-on/hop-off buses are a great idea - we plan to do something similar in
Dublin. I was aware of the Oyster card (similar, I think, to Sydney's Opal
card) so we'll be looking into that.

I'll keep 8 June in mind although I expect to be totally buggered most evenings
after being dragged around (willingly!) to all the galleries/museums by my wife
 :-)

Re: viewing .PEF files... help needed

That's odd. I can see .PEFs in Faststone (I'm on 5.1) and the Faststone web
site lists .PEF as supported - the latest version is 7.3.

Perhaps a reinstall might help.

Pentax Photo Gallery - Revived?

2019-09-21 Thread Brian W
I don't think this has been posted before but it seems that the PPG has had a
makeover.

https://pentaxphotogallery.com/

It seems to be a work-in-progress - I can't find any way to search for a
particular photographer other than by scrolling down the 'Artists' Page and the
old links to an artist's gallery no longer work.

Perhaps not dead after all? But still work to do.

So am I, which is why I installed Classic Shell as soon as I got a Win 7
computer.

I'm going to stay on Win 7 on my desktop PC probably until it carks. (As an
aside, my laptop still runs Vista and I've not had any security issues with it
even though it's been unsupported for some time.)

Re: help with making a PDF file from a doc file

Ann

You may have already sorted out your current problem but for any similar issues
in future you might like to download Softmaker Free Office. It has an excellent
word processor that can read & write MS Word files and can export documents to
pdf.

It's an excellent package. I've been using a older version of the paid version
for years - I've looked at the free version and it's more than capable.

Enough to put out most of the fires that have been burning for months. In a

Beautiful black cat. We have one just like him.

Very sad to lose a long time furry friend.

Apparently so :-)

The car in my image was placed on the Sydney Opera House forecourt and a large
crane used to drop the boulder - to the amusement of a large crowd, I
understand. The whole thing was then moved to its present location.

Re: Lockdown life

2020-04-10 Thread Brian W
It's much the same here. We have to stay at home except for essential services
but we can go for a walk for exercise - no more than two people and maintaining
social distancing.

Of course, over this Easter weekend, the self indulgent feel they still have a
right to drive to their favourite holiday spots - the police are turning back as
many as they can and issuing substantial fines.

Well said, Bill.

I've been hunkered down for a couple of weeks due to a mild cold - being
cautious, but I don't have any other symptoms of CV.

We don't have a full lock-down here (yet) but we might as well because
businesses keep shutting down because of lack of customers. It wont be long
before only supermarkets, food stores and petrol stations will be the only
businesses open.

Fortunately, being in a rural area we have plenty to keep us occupied around the
property - catching up with all the projects we've been putting off.

Keep safe all.

OT GESO - Lockdown Walkabout

2020-04-27 Thread Brian W
G'day all

Lockdown here is lasting for another 3-4 weeks at least but, if we have to
self-isolate, there would be a lot worse places than our little rural area in
the far western area of Sydney.

Most days we go for a short walk up our quiet street - we've been coming across
neighbours we haven't talked to in decades!

Here's just a few photos taken on our walks. These were all taken with my Oly
OMDs. Sadly my Pentax gear doesn't see much action these days - if only that
K-01 had come with a built in viewfinder, things might have been different :-(.

Re: OT GESO - Lockdown Walkabout

2020-04-27 Thread Brian W
A 100 miler around the yard! That's dedication.

I actually have a K-01 - bought at a very good price as a curiosity. I agree it
produces great images - when you can see the image on the monitor, which is rare
in my experience. My Q suffers from the same fate. I have a turret viewfinder
but it's not my idea of a practical option. I think the K-01 was a missed
opportunity.

More or less - it's a pumped system from a pipe sunk into the groundwater.

"Grevilea" is interesting.  Not something I would expect to see

Probably not ;-) They grow well in coastal California though.

Oh yes - definitely in use. There's a lot of innovative and unusual mailboxes
around here :-)

Good idea - it's been a while since we've had a Mailboxes theme (2010 was the
last time).

Re: OT Covid-19

2020-03-17 Thread Brian W
Testing downunder is also restricted. You need to have cold or flu symptoms AND
either been in contact with a confirmed case or arrived in Australia from
overseas. I have the cold but not either of the other criteria.

Discretion being called for, I'm staying home for the time being. Time to work
on my backlog of photos...

Larry & PJ. My condolences. I lost my parents some time ago now but it I know
the emotions that you will be feeling. Best wishes.

Very spectacular tree - you've caught it well.

I've never seen one in real life - it's one of the few eucs not native to
