I recently came across a collection that had an abandoned mouse nest. While the artifacts were in polyethylene bags, the mice at through a couple of bags and left droppings next to and/or on the artifacts. We removed the bags and replaced with new ones, but the object is compromised. They have also left droppings on oversized ground stone. We clean by using a HEPA vacuum. We do not use any cleaning agents on the artifacts. The mice also made a nest in one of our dioramas (in storage). The mess was so extensive, we will have to dispose of the entire piece. Our participants have to realize the primary vectors of Hantavirus are the deer mouse, white-footed mice, pack rats, and cotton rats. The city mouse vs. the country mouse is not a vector. The city mouse is Mus musculus and has not been indicted. So individuals should first know what mouse they're dealing with. If it's the city mouse, then the probability of it transmitting Hantavirus is extremely low. If it's a country mouse or a pack or cotton rat, that's a different story.
