[Phono-L] Fraud Artists and Crooks descend on Craigslist
I placed a Victrola for sale on Craigslist today, and almost immediately I was contacted by two crooks/scammers. Here is one of the bizarre email I received. I am assuming that a certain % of Sellers actually fall for this lunacy, otherwise these con artists would not be trying it. Hello, I'm making an immediate purchasing on behalf of my client and you will receive check payment in excess over the item price. The check is already signed, authorized and ready to be cashed. You are receiving over payment because it includes shipper's fee, commission along side due payments. So, expect pickup because you are not expected to ship. I understand that you will only allow the shipping company to pickup from your location after you might have received the check. In addition, the check will be sent as soon as you agree with me to deduct your earnings and send the balance through western union office or location. Kindly get back to me ASAP with your full name, address and phone# as it will be written on the check. Kindly have the item removed off advertisement as it is deemed sold and inform me once done. Re: [Phono-L] Fraud Artists and Crooks descend on Craigslist
The Problem is that the initial inquiry such as Can you please tell me if this item is still available, I have an interest, sounds legitimate and so of course you respond, only to get the type of scammer nonsense like I previously displayed in my original email. I have bought and sold items on Craigslist before and have never actually encountered one of these CROOKS, but now the scams and fraud seems to be of epidemic proportions with no end in sight. - Original Message - From: Rick Mazur phonofo...@aol.com To: phono-l@oldcrank.org Sent: Wednesday, October 19, 2011 9:23:28 AM Subject: Re: [Phono-L] Fraud Artists and Crooks descend on Craigslist Hi Bruce and all: This happens all the time. What a load of crap. I hate those guys. I was confused the first time they tried it with me and I only wonder how many less sophisticated, first-time craigslist sellers give up after not being able to figure out what the hell is going on with these messages. Some sellers ask for a phone number from anyone writing to inquire about an item and say they won't respond without one. I always give my phone number when inquiring about a sale. These idiots make it harder to buy and sell on craigslist and make craigslist users mistrust everyone else who uses it. Damn them. Yes, I can imagine that given the multitude of scammers and con artists who now appear to taking over Craigslist, more and more people will be discouraged from using it, and the degree of distrust of anyone making inquiries will continue to rise and rise. Re: [Phono-L] Fraud Artists and Crooks descend on Craigslist
When the question is short like Is the item still available? always raised a red flag with me from the beginning. Most inquirers would ask I see the vicotrola ad on craigslist. The victrola looks very nice to me and I am very intereted, but I have a couple questions about the item. What alpha character after the serial numbbers appear on the id plate? My point is the sincere inquirer would not provide a sort abrupt questio and he or she will use terms foundin your description and then elaborate with their questions. Conartists want to be brief and to the point before going off an scamming others. Re: [Phono-L] Victor II ?
Hi Melissa ~ The following applies mainly to the horn and elbow for the Victor II: Late last year I bought a Victor II, which unbeknownst to me (at the time I bought it at auction), has the lowest documented serial number (35) of any standard model Victor phonograph in the Victor-Victrola on line database. It was complete except for the horn and horn elbow, and because it had this interesting serial number, the search began to complete it properly. The VII seems to be a popular favorite among collectors, with the humpback rear panel an appealing element. You might already be aware of this since you're working on your Victor II generally, but in addition to the tone-arm that Ron noted, the horn elbow is also specific to the II, and can be somewhat hard to find. Reproductions are available, I believe. The horn can be hard to locate as well, the 19 black flower version being much easier to locate than the correct black brass (I'll refer to as bb) earlier style horn. It was a bit of a learning curve to research the variations in sizes of the bb horn. The information in the Victor Data Book is helpful (especially with regard to the black pedal horn), but less so when it comes to what turns out to be a broader range of bell shapes and diameters on the bb horns. According to the VDB, there's quite a leap up in size between a VI and VII bb horn. In reality, I'm now aware of at least two intermediate sizes (between the VI VII bb horn) that the book does not document. One way the VDB IS useful here, is that it breaks down the various production runs of the VII over time, and shows whether a particular series of VII had the bb or 19 pedal horn as original equipment. Your serial number, cabinet and hardware details will help zero in on which series you have and which horn it should have. A very nice VII black pedal horn, correct at 19 just sold on eBay for $129 + shipping; a very fair price I think. A correct bb horn for a VII can cost in the $400 range or more for a decent example. Maybe someone can comment further on the tone-arm length -- If a Victor II has the humpback rear panel, does it take a slightly longer arm than a non-humpback machine? Re: [Phono-L] Victor II ?
Is the mounting hole spacing specific to the II as well? If so, what is it? Hi Everyone, We are in need of the entire back bracket and tone arm for our new Victor II. Below is the link to an Ebay auction for what looks like a II tone arm and bracket. We were told by Ron Sitko that the Victor II had a specific back bracket and tone arm. Only a part from a II will fit another II. Can anyone tell me if the part in the Ebay auction is from a II. The seller doesn't seem to know. [Phono-L] Columbia Regent Desk Louver
I just picked up a Columbia Regent Desk phonograph that is missing a louver. The phonograph is on one end of the desk, and the horn points out the other end, with two adjustable louvers covering it, that you can adjust with a knob to change the volume. Actually, I thought both louvers were missing, but I found one buried inside the cabinet. These pivoted on a pin, and that area on this louver is broken out, so it actually would be nice to find a pair of good louvers, but if I can only find one then I'll have to patch up this one. The louver is dark colored mahogany, measuring 14-7/8 x 3 inches, and is 9/32-inch thick. Does anyone have one or two of these? I could also use the linkage that connected them to the adjustment knob. Thanks, Greg Farmer ___ Phono-L mailing list http://phono-l.org

Sorry I couldn't find my article sooner - this is the one I wanted to refer you to. Not cheap, but good. These are what the cylinder digitization project uses at UCSB. John Robles From: Anthony J.
