We gladly purchased a genuine Crap-O-Phone from a man who had bought it and
found out it was fake. He purchased a nice Victor III from us and asked if I
would pay him $40 for his Crap-O-Phone because he never wanted to see it
again. I gave him the $40 because it had a Victor III-IV motor and cast
iron turntable!

We saw another one that had an Edison TRIUMPH motor (yes really). They added
a gear for a spindle. I did not wish to pay his $425.00 price Triumph motor
or not.

Once, we were offered 300 Crap-O-Phones at $30 each. I didn't even want
one, let alone a big pile of Crap (-O-Phones)! :-) We dubbed them
Franken-phonos because they were made from dead phonograph parts.

One more story: I knew a man who traveled to India now then to visit his
wife's family. He went by a place that makes the C- O- Phones purchased
items that they removed from other 'dead' phonographs and couldn't use. His
suitcase was weighed down with original Victor back brackets, bullet brakes,
concert reproducers, etc, all for next to nothing!

Ok.

I'll be first.

Years ago, I saw an octagonal cased crap-o-phone that I thought was kind of
cool looking. Someone from this list or the Phonolist said that they would
order a bunch of them and the price was reasonable, as I recall.

So I bought one. It had the usual portable motor and turntable, petaled
brass horn and the usual cobbled tone arm and reproducer. Not a bad sounding
reproducer, either. I still have it and I point out to visitors that these
things are still being made, albeit poorly.

Anyone else ever buy one and if so, why?

I would expect that if you put a good soundbox on it, an HMV or Victor
Exhibition, Victrola no. 2 or 4, or any decent generic mica-diaphragmmed piece,
the machine would actually sound pretty fair - better than most portables, for
instance, as at least you've got an external horn. With the portable motor, you
might even be able to put in a stronger spring in the barrel and you'd have
even more functionality. P. Carli

Re: [Phono-L] Have YOU ever purchased a Crap-O-Phone???

2012-09-18 Thread Philip Carli
That's why I had suggested a stronger spring could be put in the barrel,
probably at minimal cost. (I had a special spring put in my 30s Thorens
portable and it came to around $60 plus shipping. Plays 12 discs like
gangbusters now.) And as for discussing crap-o-phones, the one external-horn
disc machine I have is a Victor Jr., and even with a restored soundbox and a
Monarch spring in the barrel it sounds thin and modest - such is its nature -
so if you want an external horn machine that can, with some modification, sound
fairly good and look attractive at a minimal cost, why not buy a
crap-o-phone? The only point of a Victor Jr. is _having_ one, not listening
to it - so what if it's original?

Thanks! While it should be good for our business, it really has little
direct impact. We do these shows to promote the hobby in general. We all

fall in love with these musical treasures. We see people every show how do
fall in love with them and some even buy one, but they haven't advanced to
collecting more than one. Because they are a visual AND audio antique, I
believe they will endure.
We jumped on an opportunity to work with the Los Angeles County Fair
(largest fair in the US). Their main attraction this year is called
GENIUS. They contacted the APS club here in California for help. The
display (33,000 sq ft) focused on Henry Ford, Ben Franklin, Geo. Washington
Carver, the Wright bros, Steve jobs and of course, Thomas Edison. They
worked with our suggestions and there are over 100 Edison items on display
for the 150,000 school kids and 1.5 million visitors to the fair.

Anyone on the list ever knowingly buy a Crap-O-Phone? As in...on purpose?

Fess up. :-)

[Phono-L] Very Sad News

2012-09-18 Thread brice paris
I am very sad  and upset that I must bring to you very sad news.  Mr. Robert R.
Johnson of  the famous Mr. Victor Phonograph Museum, avid Oregon Duck fan and a
friend to most of us in the phonograph world, was unable to beat the odds this
time and passed away yesterday afternoon after a short illness.   Bob was one
of the most generous people that I have ever known, and I am sure that many of
you have been on the receieving end of that at one time or another.  He was
always willing to take his time to help collectors and non collectors who
contacted him with his knowledge of our hobby, often times giving parts to
folks he really didn't know to help them put a machine together.   He was a
true gentleman who never let grass grow under his feet, he always kept moving.
Words can not describe the shock and heavy hearts that Kathleen and I have
loosing a friend such as Bob.   Bob and Karen were inseparatable and always had
a smile and greeting
for anyone that they met.    I ask that your thoughts and prayers go out to
Karen and their two daughters Kelly and  Keri as they attempt to deal with
their loss.
As many of you know when dealing with their personal  lives they are relatively
private.  At this time, Karen has asked that you contact me directly with
any phone calls and any questions and I will try my best to answer.  I will
also let everyone know when I have an address that they would want cards sent

2012-09-18 Thread George Paul
Thank you Brice, for letting us know about Bob's passing.

I'm shocked - Bob always seemed so fit and healthy for the years I've known
him. And he was, as you wrote, most generous with other collectors. In my
case, he tolerated my many arcane questions in the course of researching
various talking machines. Not only did he answer what he could immediately,
but he would follow up days later with additional information - sometimes after
disassembling machines in his collection. His heart was in our hobby, and he
will indeed be missed.
