Hi Ken
Wow! For all the years we've been friends, I continue to be amazed and really
proud of you and what you are doing. I know you have been going through hard
times for several years, and getting to the treatment you need is difficult
from
where you are living. I admire your courage and strength of character! Thank
you for standing up for those who can't, for speaking out when others are
silent, and for educating the public on the need for self-protection and
awareness. I wish you all the best and offer my strength for you to draw on
whenever you need it.
You might be in a small, sheltered town, but you are never alone.
Love,
John

John Robles along with everyone else,

I don't think I said anything about it but I just returned from a 4 day visit
to
Washington DC, I attended the Internation AIDS Conference held every four
years, where the AIDS Heath Care Foundation (AHF) paid for my travel, hotel
stay, food and driver sence with my Avascular Necrosis would not beable to do
all the walking that it would take if I was on foot and I am in need of a total
left hip replacement. AHF is a interneation Not-For-Profit organization that
covers 22 countrys, out of all 22 countries the USA is the only one that has
Waiting List for people under insured, low income or without insurance at all.
AHF requested me to speak at the conference so I had to prepair a 15 to 20
mintue speach and I address a croud in the conference room at the hotel I was
staying in and there was roughly 1800 people that attended that gathering. I
love doing things like this, as it gives me something positive to do and hope
my
efforts help reduce the
number of newly infected people each year. The infection rage in the USA is
averaged to about 1 person every 16 minutes. That for me and my view is just
not acceptable and with all we know about HIV and how it is passed, the newly
infected rate with in the USA is not acceptable. 30 years into the crisis and
still not all people know how to protect themselves and education is a major
part in prevention.

I am so happy I was able and asked to do this. This is the first time the
conference has been held in the USA. Before Obama lifted the ban on people
with
HIV/AIDS entering this country the conference has had to be held in other
countries. I can honestly say I am very PROUD of what I do and it makes me
happy to even know I might prevent even one person from becoming infected. My
calling came after I helped one of my best long time friends die and watching
this and how long and painful with all the suffering he went through I just
knew
I had to become involved and do something.

I hope that this does not turn anyone off sence I know this is a scary and
touchy subject and I have had negitive reactions from people before but I know
and have seen how supporting the Phono Collecting community is and I am very
thankful for that. I am also thankful that I am able to continue to collect
phonographs and graphophones as this has been my 19 year passion and I just
love
it. Here in the small mile square town that I live in I was really happy to
take some of my machines into the middle annd high school and educate and show
the kids where there Cd's and other recording medium and where it all started
from. I was very hard pressed to find even one kid that ever had seen, heard
or
every was taught the history of recorded sound.

The main problem with finding set screws, is not the 5-40 thread, it is the
slot, as opposed to a socket head. I have a local fastener company that
stocks a bazillion screws of all types and shapes and has plenty of stock,
but slotted are real hard to find, unless they are new old stock.
Collectors of antique machinery of all types have bought up all of the
available stock of slotted screws. I recently searched for any size slotted
set screws for my restoration of a Fairy Phono Lamp - no luck - not that
they might be out there somewhere, just not commonly available any more.

Kenneth,

It's thrilling to hear of your involvement with the AIDS Conference. I've
not heard of the AHF but it sounds to me like it does stellar work. I too
was thrilled when the President lifted that odious travel ban. Having been
around when AIDS first hit, being somewhat involved in the fight for help,
and remembering the feeling of abandonment we felt from our government, I am
always grateful to people like you who go that extra mile. It really is a
disgrace that our country with all the wealth and advances we have, we still
leave the poor and the sick to the mercy of the market or charity. I
think it's telling that the National Health Service was part of the opening
ceremony at the Olympics.

Keep up the good work and thank you for it too.

Sincerely,
George Glastris

The main problem with finding set screws, is not the 5-40 thread, it is the
slot, as opposed to a socket head. I have a local fastener company that
stocks a bazillion screws of all types and shapes and has plenty of stock,
but slotted are real hard to find, unless they are new old stock. Collectors
of antique machinery of all types have bought up all of the available stock
of slotted screws. I recently searched for any size slotted set screws for
my restoration of a Fairy Phono Lamp - no luck - not that they might be out
there somewhere, just not commonly available any more.

would have to screw in and then cut off. That is not the way I want to go

I would also like to thank EVERYONE for all the help I have been given

Hi Ken,Please explain what you meant by the right hand side of the
attachment was missing... If it is just the bearing on the right side, you
already have one in your machine. He couldn't be referring to the feedscrew,
since that is permanently attached to the 2/4 gearing. The only other thing
would be the feedscrew tube, which you also already have. So, if he has the
feedscrew with the round gear case assembly attached and he has the BE plate
that has the locking post on it, you should be good. You might also need the
screws to attach the plate and the tube. Send a pic if you have one. Also,

The screw in question is an ordinary set screw with a slotted head. You can get
this screw at any well stocked hardware store. I had the same problem with my
Edison Standard Model B. It was missing the set screw that held the 2/4 min.
attachment to it. A 5-40 thread is very common
in a well stocked store.

The main problem with finding set screws, is not the 5-40 thread, it is the
slot, as opposed to a socket head. I have a local fastener company that stocks
a bazillion screws of all types and shapes and has plenty of stock, but slotted
are real hard to find, unless they are new old stock. Collectors of antique
machinery of all types have bought up all of the available stock of slotted
screws. I recently searched for any size slotted set screws for my restoration
of a Fairy Phono Lamp - no luck - not that they might be out there somewhere,
just not commonly available any more.

I took two 5-40 nuts locked them together on the screw. Then with a Dremel with
a thin cut off blade and holding the nuts with vice grips. I cut the nut and
screw at the same time. You loose a nut but it is easier to put in a slot in
the small screw.

I recently searched for any size slotted set screws for my
restoration of a Fairy Phono Lamp - no luck - not that they might be out
there somewhere, just not commonly available any more.

[Phono-L] Looking for a screw for a BK....

2012-07-25 Thread Ken aka: OnATorrent
Hello all,

I am looking now for a headless screw for a Columba BK.  It is the size 5-40
and holds the rod that he caraige slides across above the feed screw and gear.
It's for the rod that is in front of the mandrel.  There is only one screw and
it goes on the left side of the rod.  This is the BK with the black bedplate.
I am hoping I can find some one with an original one that I do not have to
alter.  I called Dwyane Wyatt and he only has one that I would have to screw in
and then cut off.  That is not the way I want to go about it if I can help it.
If any one has one I would be very happy to purchase it.
I would also like to thank EVERYONE for all the help I have been given here.  I
live in a very rural mile square town with it being over 100 miles to the
nearest city.  It is so nice to be able to be in contact with other collectors
even though I do not get to meet anyone face to face. Maybe I will be able to
make it to the next Orlando, Florida show and get to see some old friends and
make some new ones.

Hi Ken,Please explain what you meant by the right hand side of the attachment
was missing... If it is just the bearing on the right side, you already have
one in your machine. He couldn't be referring to the feedscrew, since that is
permanently attached to the 2/4 gearing. The only other thing would be the
feedscrew tube, which you also already have. So, if he has the feedscrew with
the round gear case assembly attached and he has the BE plate that has the
locking post on it, you should be good. You might also need the screws to
attach the plate and the tube. Send a pic if you have one. Also, let me know
what he is asking, if you don't mind. My email is:

I have a large collection of Edison 2 minute cylinders and was just in fear
that he diamond stylus in the H stylus would carve out or damage the grooves
in the was cylinders.  I know what you mean about wax breaking.  I just broke
my copy of Bake Dat Chicken Pie and I was almost in tears over it.  Lucky for
me I found someone willing to sell thiers and it is in better condition than
mine was.  So I guess it all worke out for the good.  But thanks for your
input.  I think I have found a 2/4 minute attachment for my Sears Oxford that
was made after the BKT so the BK conversion attachment will work on it. How
cool is that?  Still no luck on a complete Colubia BE 2/4 minute attachment.
I found someone that has most of one but missing the right hand side of it.
I told him if he can find the other part I would be more than happy to buy it.
Again, thanks for all your help,
 Ken

Hi Ken,Yes, you can play 2 minute cylinders with an H stylus. However, that
being said, I am not a big fan of playing wax cylinders. I don't particularly
like the brittleness of the original wax and hate it when one breaks... also,
I like the music on the Blue Amberols and Indestructibles better, so that is
what I collect. Everybody has a different idea about this, but I have a
friend who just paid a large sum for a 2 min 6 Columbia cylinder at Union
and when he got home it fell out of the box and shattered :( Curt

  Bob and Curt,
If I do have an Edison H Stylus put in my Lyric reproducer by Steven
Medved, would I still be able to play 2 minute record with out damage to
them?  The Edison 4 minute diamond stylus doesn't work on Edison 2 minute
records, does it?  I have always used a K reproducer so I can switch
between 2 and 4 minute cylinders.
This is all a learning experience for me about Columbia reproducers and
conversion kits and the change in stylus needed.
Thanks to you both for your help, I really appreciate it very much.
