Hi Hubert,

Thanks for writing this down.

I was wondering how you envision the following: "The source package name
may also include the APIVERSION in its name." I mean, if the binary
package should contain it, and there are multiple versions, shouldn't
the source package also contain it? Or is this related to the last
paragraph of that chapter?

Also, I think we want some more words when the package with APIVERSION
is "updated" with a newer version. I.e. I think it shouldn't be updated
when you still want to provide the old APIVERSION, but instead there
should be a new package. Or are you envisioning to provide multiple
APIVERSIONs from the same source (I would recommend against that,
although since the latest uscan version less so).

Last time we discussed a target for how many APIVERSIONs are allowed. I
don't remember quickly what came out of that discussion, but maybe
having the discussion (or different opinions) reflected in the policy as
point to consider may be appropriate.

I suggest to not close bugs like this as the bug is still valid, i.e.
the autopkgtest fails (most of the times). If one doesn't care for tests
(I think we should, but that is a different matter), I suggest to not
add them to the package. Apart from work ongoing to have autopkgtest
results taken into account during migration from unstable to testing,
some derivatives take autopkgtest results already more serious.

This sounds like a reasonable approach, but what I am missing is a
recommendation on what to do to keep the number of packages limited. I
think it is not such a great idea to replace one problem (not the right
version) with another one (too many packages to support).

One approach could be for example the following. Try to have only two
versions per release, but really limit the number to a maximum of 3.

For packages that are somewhat forgiving and/or want to migrate when
required, it may make sense to not think about the *-foo packages as
transitional packages, but as the default, which will always point to
the latest version. Honestly, I rather depend on such a package and fix
bugs as they come than having to keep an eye out for updates and update
the dependency to the latest version.

I advise you to package it stand-alone. In hindsight I don't think
bundling source is a great idea¹². I am in the process of packaging one
of the jquery-goodies packages separately (currently waiting in the NEW
queue).

Paul

¹ version numbers don't match with upstream

[Pkg-javascript-devel] grunt and Debian packaged grunt modules

Hi,

I try to package something (libjs-jquery-tablesorter) that builds with
grunt. Initially, I was missing required dependencies, but after
installing those that I could find in Debian, the error list remains the
same. How does one tell grunt to use the Debian modules?

Installed node-grunt-contrib-clean node-grunt-contrib-concat
node-grunt-contrib-uglify node-grunt-contrib-copy

(pbuild32198) testavoira jquery-tablesorter-2.28.9+dfsg1 # grunt

I also need this for my package cacti.

My intend is also to split jquery-goodies into it's components as I
believe having multiple upstream sources in one source package is doing
more bad than good. E.g. watch files and upstream tracking is now
totally missing. Unless people object, this will be my first split off.

Does anybody here have a clue how to fix such an issue? It is NOT
reproducible in my pbuilder environment, not even when I enable
networking (as sbuild is suggested to have (suggested on IRC)). It is
also not reproducible in the builds by the reproducible-builds project.
And it is also not reproducible on the debomatic.d.n service.

But it is the second time in succession (meaning 100% failure rate for
this package) that this "socket hang up" error occurred on a build daemon.

Good to know.

If that is all, that would be a great solution to the problem at hand
indeed. Does it require other adaptations? I guess one would need to
guarantee that the migrate calls are actually included. How did you do
that? I guess every package depending on libjs-jquery-mobile would need
to load the libjs-jquery-migrate calls? Do you know if this can be done
inside libjs-jquery-mobile itself?

[Pkg-javascript-devel] Bug#734101: openlp in Stretch in danger due to RC bug in libjs-jquery-mobile

2017-03-19 Thread Paul Gevers
Hi Raoul,

This is a heads up that in my analysis your package openlp in Debian is
in danger of getting removed from Stretch because it depends on
libjs-jquery-mobile. libjs-jquery-mobile has an RC bug¹ and I expect in
the end it will get removed from Stretch. If your package does not
strictly require it to function, I suggest you work around the
dependency on libjs-jquery-mobile and communicate with the release team
(before you upload if you do more than just drop the dependency). If
your package really requires it, I suggest you help to get bug 734101¹
fixed somehow.

@Horde maintainers: do you know how bad the current situation is? I.e.
is shipping without libjs-jquery-mobile a worse experience from the
Horde point of view than shipping with the broken libjs-jquery-mobile?
Do I understand the packing content well enough when I say it looks like
by just dropping the Depends in d/control, you get the a package that
doesn't depend (duh) anymore but doesn't behave much different, or is
there much magic in "--buildsystem=phppear --with phppear"?

If I understand correctly, adding the jquery-mobile package from
upstream Horde to the php-horde-core package would require a new source,
right, as the jquery code is stripped from the Debian source. (This note
is just for info, in case somebody thinks along those lines).

Logged from #debian-release:

[20:37:15] ivodd: regarding libjs-jquery-mobile, one link is
offered to be broken by the maintainer of OpenLayers by not building the
-doc binary. Is that something you would consider? (see last paragraph

[20:38:17] it would break the link with wireshark IIUC

[Pkg-javascript-devel] Bug#734101: update on RC bug#734101: libjs-jquery-mobile not working

2017-03-19 Thread Paul Gevers
Follow-up for RC bug 734101, a partial investigation at BSP in
Mönchengladbach.

On Sun, 22 Jan 2017 13:54:54 +0100 Dominik George wrote:
> I am working on fixing this in time for the freeze.

Which failed, albeit Dominik committed updates to the pkg-javascript git
repo¹. Because libjs-jquery-mobile is currently considered a key
package², IIUC because wireshark depends on it, it isn't going to be
automatically removed.

libwireshark-data depends on libjs-openlayers. And libjs-openlayers-doc,
build from the same source, depends on libjs-jquery-mobile. Also horde
depends on libjs-jquery-mobile.

I talked to Ivo De Decker (Release Team assistant) on the BSP in
Mönchengladbach, and one option out of the libjs-jquery-mobile tree may
still be a new upstream version. So attached, I start with the diffstat
of the git diff of the two upstream version in the pkg-javascript tree.
Looks like demo files were changed and more even, added, but that
shouldn't be too big of an issue. I'll try to look into the extend of
the changes in the .css and .js file, but looking at the size, that may
be huge.

However, other solutions may lay in the direction of
removing/downgrading dependencies of libjs-openlayers on
libjs-jquery-mobile (how much is it needed for a documentation
package?), removing the horde dependency (apparently the Horde usage is
broken already since 2014, see bug 749799 in CC) and similar dependency
tree resolutions. I'll try to make time to look into this, but don't
mind if other people beat me to it.

[Pkg-javascript-devel] future of dojo in Debian

2017-03-18 Thread Paul Gevers
Hi David,

Dojo is not going to be released with Stretch because there is an RC bug
(FTBFS). Also there is a build dependency with a removal request. Also
there is a newer upstream release.

Do you see a future for dojo in Debian? If so, fine, but if not I'd
rather remove it.

This is what I have:
paul@testavoira ~ $ ll
/usr/share/javascript/jquery-ui/css/smoothness/jquery-ui.min.css
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 32021 dec 8 08:59

I don't see the problem, unless something really is looking for
ui.min.css. But that wasn't even there in the old package as far as I
can tell.

Yes, the default theme and the file layout upstream changed. But I added
a convenience symlink from css/smoothness to themes/base so this should
work.

What do you mean by that? The current build process of jqueryui already
verifies that the final result is the same as the one provided by
upstream and presumably build by grunt. So I am not sure that building
with grunt is going to solve anything if you believe jqueryui is wrong.

That doesn't mean I object to building with grunt at all, just to make

To be honest, I don't have a clue what ruby-jquery-ui-rails is doing
(never heard of the package before), so I can't answer that question
yet. One thing, the latest version of upstream ruby-jquery-ui-rails is
also embedding 1.12.1, so apparently upstream already converted what is
required.

There was only major reshuffling in the building. The final js and css
files are, minus whitespace, identical to the files shipped upstream. So
if this is an issue with the js or css file, it is an upstream issue.

I am very inexperienced in debugging javascript, so I'd appreciate any

Hi Ximin,

The debci test of cacti¹ started failing after the update of
jquery-ui-themes. This is caused by the change of the css file names in the
packages. The names used to be
/javascript/jquery-ui-themes//jquery.ui.all.css and are now
/javascript/jquery-ui-themes//jquery.ui.css. To avoid all dependent
packages requiring updating, I suggest to rename back to the old name, unless
this was really done on purpose. In that case I'd like to hear why.

Not specifically, but instead of taking the tar with build artifacts
created by upstream, I updated the package to build from source as it
should in Debian. Because packaging grunt was work in progress and I
didn't expect it to be finished so soon, I did stuff manually and I
hadn't notice this file.

I'll check if the upstream build tar has these files and I'll check if
using grunt works now. If the file is there in either case, I'll ship

[Pkg-javascript-devel] where to get / what is the source of jquery-ui-themes?

2016-10-30 Thread Paul Gevers
Hi all,

I uploaded a new version of jqueryui today, the first one being build
from source. I wanted to do the same for jquery-ui-themes, but I seem to
not be able find the source for the themes.

Does anybody here know or understands how the zip files are generated
that one can download from http://jqueryui.com/download/ (Themes)?

I have the suspicion that the base theme in the jqueryui package is
modified by the themeroller on the fly (for the web site) but I expect
to still find the definition of the different themes somewhere. I
haven't been able to do that so far.

You reopened this bug again one month later without explaining why you
reopened it. Could you please elaborate? I don't understand what you
still expect from the libjs-jquery-ui package with regard to this bug.

In Debian, we have the package nodejs-legacy which provides the symlink
you request. Please read the description. Apart from text describing
fact that no official Debian package may depend on it, it also contains
a link to the technical committee ruling on how this came about. As the
ax25-node package still exist, I see no chance at all that the current
situation will change.

As ax25-node and nodejs don't provide the same functionality, using the
update-alternaives system is not appropriate.

Hi Jonas,

First off, you voice my opinion, and fortunately you don't mention
anything new (to me). The reason why I asked is because what I observe
in packages maintained by this team (which is new to me).

You didn't really answer this question. As far as I am aware, but maybe
I am wrong, there were issues with getting Grunt into Debian. Or is that
issue already solved.

[Pkg-javascript-devel] jquery-goodies policy and grunt

2016-10-07 Thread Paul Gevers
Hi all,

I am about to add some JavaScript binary packages to Debian, but I was
really wondering what the current ideas are with respect to source
packages. There are a lot of jquery plugins packaged in the
jquery-goodies package, but also several (a lot?) of plugins are
packaged separately. What is the current consensus: should new plugins
be packages via the jquery-goodies package or stand-alone or does it
depend? Are there reasons to choose one or the other?

A relate question: JavaScripts are often "combined" with Grunt. What is
the current status/stance of including those in Debian. I am normally of
the opinion that everything should be build from source, but I can also
be somewhat pragmatic if required. JavaScript that is combined is still
very readable and changeable and I have the idea that there is a lot of
JavaScript in Debian that isn't "build from source".

This was not what I meant. What I meant is how JavaScript is handling
the lack of shlibs/symbols processing as we do during package building
for libraries and depending packages. I would love to know how I can
learn what version of $javascript-package I actually need for my package
to work properly.

Why not using Debian infrastructure, because one needs to download stuff
that isn't in the package? I was thinking of running these tests as
autopkgtest?

The Javascript team is only loosely coordinated: Not all of us nurse all
of the packages in the team.

So how many are there approximately? And how many are involved in the
jquery stuff? I am considering joining the team, but I don't want to be
the only one to care for jquery and its related packages (no offense
intended Antonio).

As I recall, maintenance of jquery in particular has lagged behind a lot
in the past. So any and all help would be much appreciated.

So a statement on the current strategy would be nice, such that I can
evaluate if it makes sense to join the team. What I care for is that a
modern version is available (maybe for the time being next to an older
API? How are other JavaScript chains handling the lack of automatic API
tracking? Are there tools in the team to check for breakage? One of the
stupid but powerful things that I do for the cacti package (a web-app)
is to just recursively crawl all web-pages, I guess it must be possible
to also check JavaScript execution.

[Pkg-javascript-devel] roadmap of jquery (and helpers)

2016-09-14 Thread Paul Gevers
Hi all,

[I am aware that this has probably been discussed before, but I fail to
find the right discussion in the archive. Please point me to it if you
know where it is.]

I am currently preparing for a new major upstream version of my package
cacti (which I hope will be able to meet the stretch freeze). Upstream
has already for a long time been using jquery, and I have been able to
use the Debian package as my dependency. The next major version "needs
to avoid jQueryUI 1.2 as it's currently a hot stinking mess."¹

AFAIUI due to the nature of how the javascript eco-system works, it is
not trivial to "follow" newer versions. Could you please let me know
what the roadmap² of the javascript maintainer team is for the jquery
package and to jquery related packages. I see there is a 3.0 version in
experimental, but it is unclear to the outside world (and to me) when
that will migrate to unstable. Should I instead prepare for a
convenience copy of jquery (and related scripts), which I would really
hate to do?

Paul

[Pkg-javascript-devel] Bug#759672: jquery: diff for NMU version 1.7.2+dfsg-3.2

2014-08-29 Thread Paul Gevers
Package: jquery
Version: 1.7.2+dfsg-3.1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch pending

Dear maintainer,

I must appear rather incapable by now, but in my previous upload the solution
that I choose is not technically correct. I believe the result is the same, but
I still want to fix the issue.

I've prepared an NMU for jquery (versioned as 1.7.2+dfsg-3.2) and will soon
upload it to DELAYED/2 to give you some time to fix it up if you rather have
that
but short enough to be before the migration to testing of the previous upload.

Regards.
Paul

Re: [Pkg-javascript-devel] jquery_1.7.2+dfsg-3.1_amd64.changes ACCEPTED into unstable

2014-08-28 Thread Paul Gevers
ARG.

I am terribly sorry, but this was not meant to happen.

I was still trying to upload the NMU to DELAYED/15 (20 didn't exist) but
dput was complaining that it could not find the deb file, while it was
there. In a last resort I tried to upload without DELAY and try to kill
if it would start, but I was too late and also my dcut command appears
to have happened too late.

Please accept my apologies.

[Pkg-javascript-devel] Bug#730014: cacti also wants jquery 1.9

2014-03-06 Thread Paul Gevers
Hi Debian Javascript Maintainers,

Just for the record, I want to implement an update to my package Cacti
which also depends on a newer version of jquery. In my case I need 1.9.1
at least.

So I also would appreciate an update.
