The content is up to people to suggest and volunteer to present.
Obviously, if there has been purposeful scheduling to conflict with a
major FOSS event, there will be less FOSS content at DCC.

Sign up to present at DCC is still open and the November event does
not conflict with ABLEconf. So it is up to FOSS people to sign up and
vote interest to get FOSS content in the event. No need to picket,
just take over some classrooms!

If this turns out to be true, I guess I will have been to my last DCC. I
have noticed an apparent lack of FOSS content in recent camps. No ruby
any more, and 1 (out of 80) session on Linux.

Is someone going to contact the DCC committee in an attempt to work out
scheduling conflicts?

Perhaps picketing at the the upcoming DCC would be appropriate if the
direct method is fruitless.

Considering they changed it 3 years in a row to match, it's hard to see it any

Desert Code Camp deliberately sets their date to coincide with ours in an
effort to limit the impact of ABLEConf; there's not much we can do about their
desire to harm free and open technology adoption in Arizona except hope they
eventually learn better.

Good intel on the other conference though. Do you have a URL or name

different target audience though. It is aimed at end users and the sponsors
are largely vendors of proprietary systems/software. I don't have many

FS Stammtisch and ABLEconf mtg Tuesday night

2011-09-20 Thread PLUG Announcements
moin moin,

The Free Software Stammtisch in the east valley is tonight at Iguana
Macks in Mesa. The Stammtisch starts at 19:00. There will be an ABLEconf
planning meeting at 18:00 *before* the Stammtisch.

http://www.LuftHans.com/Free_Software_Stammtisch#East_Valley

http://identi.ca/group/ableconf

Iguana Macks, 1371 N. Alma School Rd, Chandler, AZ 85224

http://www.IguanaMacks.com/

A Stammtisch is nothing more that a gathering of people with a common
interest, so the meeting is not formal at all.

Please come and join us for some good conversation over good food and
drinks, which are both optional. Friends and family are all welcome.

The private room where we meet has power and high speed wireless Internet,
so if you have any problems, feel free to bring in your machine and we'll
see what we can do to help you fix your problem. We even have facilities
there to do a formal presentation, so if you have a projector and want to
show everyone something exciting ( or play games on a projector ), we can
handle that as well.

If you don't find parking in the front of Iguana Macks, there is plenty
more behind the building.

business-oriented Free Software conference organized by a coalition of
many Arizona Free Software groups.

True :).

Here's last week's press release on presentations.

http://www.ABLEconf.com/press_releases/2011Mar16.html

Also important are date, time and location :).

ABLEconf 2011 Phoenix is Saturday, April 2nd from 10:00 to 18:00 at the
University for Advancing Technology in Tempe.

We have the first Saturday in April for this year and next.

For those that help us with our accounts in the social media we'll have
some specific updates we'd like to get, e.g. press releases should go up.

Blog entries are also great.

We have great business and education presentations. We have presentations

OT: PLUG, ABLEConf, State and Federal Taxes and YOU

2011-02-01 Thread Lisa Kachold
*While the whole charitable donation subject and process for soliciting
donations for both ABLEConf and PLUG (which, granted are quite different
orgs) and for Volunteers claiming a tax credit or equipment donations,
claiming a tax credit needs to be addressed formally, and recommendations or
best practices to members and volunteers needs to written up and displayed
on the volunteer section of the PLUG website, this post at tax time can
assist you.*

*ARIZONA LEGAL Summary: *

A) Neither the PLUG, nor ABLEConf are 501c designated community action
agencies. (Estimated DIY ost to obtain $1,000 fees, etc.) 1 below. below.

B) Neither the PLUG nor ABLEconf have open public budgets. Part of A above
requires election of a board, and treasurer. Neither the PLUG nor ABLEconf
spend 50%of budget on services to Arizona residents. [Unknown see B above]

C) Neither the PLUG nor ABLEconf have planning budgets, fund raising events
or submit events for TANF (Temporary Assistance to Needy Families, however
we could easily do so, should we be able to take 501c equipment
contributions, for computer recycling.

D) Neither the PLUG nor ABLEconf can submit a the Department of Revenue
letter

We could possibly get a charter as a "feeder organization" from LPI, ScALE,
or LOPSA, however, I believe they will also require standard accounting and
more. It might just be easier to DIY our own non-profit.

Non-profit status would allow us to:

0) Have elected or appointed Board members designated for various ongoing
responsibilities (so President [aka King] Hans doesn't have to do everyone
[or nothing which is what is required in a non-profit, yet fails to grow
because of limitations]])
1) Hold fundraisers
2) Reimburse people for tee-shirts, equipment purchases for events, or at
least provide a budget for BIG events and let they do as they will; since we
would be able: (see 3)
3) Provide tax write offs for volunteer time, equipment, cash donations and
mileage
4) Provide grants to youth for various purposes
5) Provide Scholarships to Member Classes or ASU?

*Current Needs:*

Of course we currently need:

0: a volunteer center for the PLUG both on the website (file and
information sharing and in he real world where we can lock up equipment. I
will set that up today in drupal).
1) Buy in and assistance from Der Hans for starting the Non-Profit Project
fundraisers and putting together the court papers for both ABLEConf and plug
(need address, [Han's house or business will do fine, but a P.O. Box is
optimal].

I can do

20 or 50 min talk on using commodity services to create elastic

The 50 min talk would include the differences, including the
pros and cons to each, for using Amazon like services vs. GoDaddy type

how to determine the economic sweet spot for each.
20 min talk on anything you want.

Just let me know what you would like and I can put together a quick

moin moin,

we need to update parts of the ABLEconf site. I've done some work on the
Participate page, but I'm certain it has lots of room for improvement.
Same with the about page.

I haven't really looked at the Women in Technology and Business page, but
it certainly needs to be updated.

In general, I need someone to make sure the current pages are no longer
referencing the last event. The about page was until this weekend :(.

Please let me know if you will help.

We also need to prepare some press releases.

Finally, if you use identi.ca, linkedin, diaspora, twitter, facebook,
dopplr, yelp, orkut or other social networking or community driven site,
we can use lots of help posting appropriately about ABLEconf. Same for
blogs.

This week, mention the Call for Presentations deadline being this
Saturday.

Re: ableconf in Prescott?

2010-03-01 Thread der.hans

Am 01. Mär, 2010 schwätzte Eric Shubert so:

moin moin,

At the last ableconf, there was talk of an ableconf in Prescott around
the March/April (soon) timeframe. Is there going to be one? I'm
wondering about presenting (again).

We had a local committee working on it, but unfortunately the committee
fell apart.

I would still love to have an ABLEconf outside the valley, but we
need a local committee with several people in the area.

We do have volunteers in Phoenix and Tucson to help the local committee,
but they can't take care of all the local issues.

ciao,

ABLEConf "Still" Media && Sony Videos

2009-10-31 Thread Lisa Kachold
The complete collection of the still media provided by Obnosis for AbleConf
2009 is here:
http://picasaweb.google.com/obnosis/AbleConf#

And replicated here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/obnosis/

And on *http://blip.tv/search?q=obnosis* a few of the films have been
uploaded while we waited for the passwords for Ableconf from Ryan.

It takes a REALLY long time to get these raw editable files up there, so
bear with me/us until we get them up!

Call or email with questions!

Thanks! I would have liked to get everyone for a few minutes, but various
emergencies drew me away from roaming, none the least was the battery time
on my cheap DVD camera! ...Next year...perhaps perfection? I apologise if
I didn't get to record a bit of your presentation, but those that we did get
a good segment for were going to YouTube where I discussed this with you,
and shared on the blip.tv channel. I recorded in less than 10 minute
segments to lay onto youtube.com since the files are huge with good sound
(which can be reduced, etc...).

Please Ryan, get me a login or whatever so I can upload them directly? If
not, I can burn media and drop them off to Brian or someone at Deru?

If so, I have a ton of iPhone pics to send to it?

ABLEconf Media

2009-10-25 Thread Ryan Rix
Hello everyone,

So ABLEconf was this weekend and I want to extend a HUGE 'thanks' to everyone
involved and attending the event. It was a pretty awesome day for everyone,
and barring a few mixups in scheduling it was a good show.

I'd like to extend special thanks to Lisa and everyone else who volunteered to
record presentations. If anyone with recordings of the presentations could
contact me offlist at this address, that would be awesome. I would like to
have the presentations available via an ABLEconf blip.tv channel so that
anyone can see some of the awesome presentations we had at the event.

Other than video, I noticed that many folks were taking photography. ABLEconf
has an official facebook 'fan' page at
http://www.facebook.com/pages/ABLEconf/35748074360 which we use as one of our
public faces. Unfortunately this page is pretty lacking of photos, even from
our 2008 event. If you took any photos, it would be awesome if you could
become a fan of us on facebook and upload some photos, and tag them if
possible.

Thanks a lot,
Ryan Rix

2009-10-19 Thread Dazed_75
Sorry Hans, but on such short notice! I don't really have time to create
something or even suitably alter what I have used and do it before
Wednesday. If you still need something then I can do better MAYBE. I might
suggest stealing the notice from the web site and changing the dates to
simply say the last Saturday of most months. Here is a copy and paste of
that info:

side of Baseline, near Fry's

2009-10-19 Thread der.hans
moin moin,

we need some fliers to put on the table at ABLEconf. I know some have been
done in the past, but don't know what state they're in. Mostly we need
fliers promoting our events, so essentially a marketing brochure. We have

ABLEconf 2009 FOSS Gaming Day ISO images -- plz2b seeding

2009-10-17 Thread Ryan Rix
Hello Everyone,

For those of you who don't know, Sunday October 25th will be gaming day at
ABLEconf 2009. SlickMcRunFast and I will be managing this event. Expect some
info on the ABLEconf homepage tonight.

http://rrix.fedorapeople.org/ABLEconf%202009%20FOSS%20Gaming%20Day%20ISOs.torrent

That is a torrent to two iso images for ABLEconf 2009's Sunday FOSS Gaming
Day.. I created them in the event that some participants want a live image for
security's sake, or simply for not having to download and install packages on
their production system.

It also makes it easier for us to bum/zombify machines for folks who show up
without a machine suitable for gaming.

Could any interested party download and seed? It's on my laptop so I'm kind of
afraid I won't be able to seed enough. Having a bigger pool of users will help
out. I'm limited to 100kbit up or so I'm pretty sure any other seed will be
faster. it's a 3.3g torrent. You can probably get away with just
downloading/seeding the live image and the README file.

These are Fedora respins, there's nothing illegal in the torrents, even the
data files are under a Free license.

ABLEConf LUG and PLUG Hackfest Tee Shirts

2009-10-10 Thread Lisa Kachold
There will also be a tee shirt table at ABLEConf where any associated LUG
can bring their shirts for sale.

\/\/0\/\/! Won't it be nice to see them all on one TABLE?

Has anyone from ABLEConf contacted the associated LUGS to request that they
bring their shirts to sell on the tee table?

I will have tees available for $15.00 at the CON for PLUG Linux Security
Group also. No Pre-order available, you have to be there to snarf one.

Has anyone from ABLEConf contacted the associated LUGS to request that they
bring their shirts to sell on the tee table?

I will have tees available for $15.00 at the CON for PLUG Linux Security
Group also. No Pre-order available, you have to be there to snarf one.

the order details.

Please specify quantity, cut and sizes in the pre-order request.

The Arizona Business and Liberty Experience Conference (ABLEconf) is
soliciting presentations for its second annual conference. ABLEconf will
take place on Saturday, October 24th, 2009 at the University of Advancing
Technology in Tempe, Arizona.

Continuing ABLEconf's drive to showcase free and open source software for
business, we are seeking presentations in either 20 or 50 minute formats.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

* SMB/SME
* Health/Medical Software and Systems
* Local Business Use of Free and Open Source Software
* Women in Technology and Business
* Education
* Multimedia
* Gadgetry and Fun Devices
* Green Computing
* Multi-Platform Applications and Free Software for proprietary
systems
* Virtualization, Grid and Cloud Computing
* Network Setup, Management and Security

Proposals submitted by September 7th will qualify for an early bird prize
drawing.

Proposals should include the following:

   1. title for the talk
   2. name, affiliation, bio and contact email address of the presenter
(needed for publishing on the website and final program schedule)
   3. Is a 20 minute or 50 minute presentation is preferred?
   4. What will be covered? A list or a brief description of the main
points to be presented should be submitted. Please include enough detail
to enable the committee to evaluate the proposal.
   5. Please notify us if the presentation will require a special
technical set up.

Submission formats in plain text, PDF and Open Document Format (ODF) will
be accepted. As we are attempting to increase awareness of free and open
technologies, it is highly desirable that presentations be done in open,
non-proprietary formats.

Email proposals to propos...@ableconf.com.

ABLEconf was founded in 2008 by a coalition of open-source software groups
and associations in Arizona. The free-admission one-day conference hosts a
wide variety of speaking tracks and sessions on how to take advantage of
open-source software in small business, government, medical, enterprise,
and individual use.

Important Dates:

* 2009Aug17: CFP opens
* 2009Sep07: early bird deadline for proposal submissions
* 2009Oct05: final deadline for proposal submissions
* 2009Oct12: last date for notification of proposal acceptance

"Women in Technology" Committee/Track

mailing list]

Program chair: ABLEconf2009wit at ardmorevalleyproductions.com
(Please protect this email address from online spiders via obfuscation
to control spam!)

Focus: Women working in "technology", women with techno-career
aspirations, women with volunteering power for ABLEconf to promote
education about technology. This track can include appropriate
presentations from other tracks as well as those specifically meant
for WIT.

There are three primary goal areas:
* Promoting women volunteers to present at ABLEconf
* Promoting women volunteering in other ways at ABLEconf
* Inviting women to attend ABLEconf (Technical Ability is interesting
and very rewarding!)

For presenters, what topics does ABLEconf want?
* Primarily technology for business
* Technology, business and balance as they relate to WIT
* Anything that facilitates success for WIT (beit psychology,
sociology, health or technical FOSS related)

== Recruiting Technology Presenters ==

"Pretty much anything is fair game. I (the chair) personally think
that in order to attract women, we need to avoid limiting technology
discussions to open source, although we want to encourage that. It
seems to me that the combination of woman + technology + open source
is perhaps a little too rarified and if we limit presentations to
that, we may fail entirely. Anything you know about technology is
fair game for consideration." - Der Hans - 2009

Ideas for Presenters/Presentations (expect overlap with other tracks):
* OpenOffice.org (Der Hans (Chair) presents annually on OpenOffice
also - confer to provide unique content)
* Linux Servers or Linux Hosting
* Linux Business Applications
* Linux in Early Childhood Education
* Home Schooling with FOSS
* Graphic design with FOSS
* Web Development with FOSS
* VOIP and Cell Technology Solutions for Extended Family or Business Networking
* Women, Trust and Open Source -
* Business, Security and Social Intrusion Detection Systems
* Camera/monitoring Systems for Everyone
* Wordpress, Facebook, WeeWeb, Text Messaging and Twitter
