Re: Linux HackFest Series: Evil /etc/hosts file

On Dec 10, 2008, at 12:27 PM, Lisa Kachold wrote:

Trust is the basis for all security.

The evil /etc/hosts file would look like this:

# /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 hostname localhost localhost.localdomain

# end

A good /etc/hosts file appears:

# /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain
192.168.6.66 hostname

# end

BTW, an /etc/hosts file like the first one will also mess up an Apache
SSL virtual host for hostname.

Given something like this:
VirtualHost *:443
  ServerName hostname
/VirtualHost

Apache will resolve 'hostname' to 127.0.0.1 when it starts up. When a
new SSL request comes in for 192.168.6.66, you've got breakage.

 sudo httpd -t -D DUMP_VHOSTS

will let you see how Apache has parsed your virtual hosts, and you
would be able to see an SSL site reported as 127.0.0.1 in this
situation.

I have implemented LDAP under Gentoo, and OpenSuse/SLES, as well as
with single sign on systems under Apache and I love cross platform
integration - it's the ONLY WAY to go!

I think you have to evaluate what the goal actually is.

FedoraDS is actually capable of synchronizing user accounts with AD
where OpenLDAP is not.

FreeIPA arches even further though some of the features (I think
Policy/Audit) are not implemented in stable release yet. I believe that
the future is FreeIPA.

I haven't looked at Likewise and will refrain from commenting on it.

 mkdir -p /mnt/test
 mount -t cifs //server-ip/share username=monk,password=secreat /mnt/test
 cd /mnt/test
 mount.cifs //192.168.1.6/ssh-vnc /mnt/test/ -o user=asil.kit,dom=obnosis.com

for those that don't like putting usernames/passwords into bash history
or readable /etc/fstab files, you can use credentials=~/.some_file and
put the username/password into that file instead.

As for Matt's response, smbfs is ancient, unmaintained code and may not
be possible on most current distributions in favor of the cifs module.

For reasons discussed recently on Samba list, smbclient connections are
actually way faster than a cifs mount but the interface may not be to
everyone's liking.

All of the certs/listed CA's that are embedded in the browsers by the

Hackfest Series: EtterCap - Plain Text Passwords - or What everyone might be doing at the Coffee Shop?

2009-02-03 Thread Lisa Kachold

How to listen on local networks (wireless/wired) for plain text passwords
(Yahoo is the example):

http://ettercap.sourceforge.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2833

Ettercap
http://125.16.88.84/corpisit/ettercap2.htm

Simple Examples:

ettercap -Nzs victim.my.net ANY:23
ettercap -Nzs -F etter.filter 192.168.0.1 192.168.0.2

Load filter from etter.filter and activate them on
all the connection between 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 . Only Log action will
be supported because it is a -s (ipsniffing) method. 192.168.0.1 is bound to
the dest chain and 192.168.0.2 to the source one. To enable even the
replacement and drop actions you have to launch ettercap -Nza -F
etter.filter IP IP MAC MAC

 ccna.pod2.pc1.ext is renamed to ccna.pod3.pc1.ext

repeater, household control device, even a TV?

Do you keep a list of mac addresses or have a scan utility that will report
them? Maybe 2 IPs having the same mac address?

BTW, you said it responded to pings but not how you were addressing it.
BTW, if you don't know where/what it is, how did you find it? Maybe it
responded to a broadcast or something?

Anyway, you are much more likely to figure it out than I so these thoughts
are really just food for your thoughts. :)

I am reporting abuse from 72.215.225.96 to cox.net; I previously reported abuse
from 71.215.225.107.
Cox has a tap on my equipment; do not access without knowing there will be
consequences.
Continued attempts to encroach my systems from this IP will be dealt with
harshly.
NONE HAVE PERMISSION to target my systems or servers or internal networks.
There is no browser running on 192.168.1.101, yet outbound port 80 packets from
this system and others are found.

Using an XSS tunnel or other script kiddie toy/tool for accessing my systems or
routers to open a door for yourself will be met with severe consequences.
Sheesh, this is easy to do, not impressive in any way, it's just sick cyber

Re: how to sanitize MS Word HTML output?

2009-05-04 Thread Steven A. DuChene
Well somehow some brain-dead web designer at MCC has managed to put
a Mime encoded syllabus online for their students. The actual file
I downloaded had a *.mht file extension and contained in that was
various bits of Mime encoded crap. One section was even base64
stuff. The bit I was able to extract from another Mime encoded bit
was the actual HTML. I am guessing this stuff is all part of that
wonderful bit of MS web publishing technology crap known as
Sharepoint or other similar MS embraceextend wonderfulness.

You can try this Toaster SPAM decoder (it will readily tell you if it's
decodable as Decode quoted-printable encoded text):

It should be noted that quoted-printable encoded text is generally associated
with EMAIL, not Word?

Yes, the whole concept of researchers hijacking malware is fascinating,

although I am less sure I understand how having $HOME/Desktop is more secure
than having $HOME being used AS the desktop folder. Probably due to where
the malware creator is able to get the autostarted file placed. That
ability seems the same to me regardless of which directory is being used as
the desktop folder. However, since I want it to be $HOME/Desktop I guess I
am satisfied with my current degree of understanding though I will hold the
references to reread another time.

In any case, my original question has not been answered. I do believe I

YouTube is the latest target for pranksters looking to amuse
themselves. Today, May 20, has been deemed Porn Day by denizens of
4chan and eBaum's World, with an organized group of users from the
sites uploading video clips of explicit, adult content en masse in an
attempt to overwhelm the search results. In actuality, it appears that
content was prematurely uploaded on the afternoon of the 19th. YouTube
has already taken some steps to fight back, but it's disturbingly easy
to find stuff you really don't want to see, and the uploaders are
 changing tactics.

4chan eh?

Had a run in with some of their admins a couple of years back over
posting high-res images of U.S. Currency.

Lets just say that 4chan and others like them are immature adults.
Unfortunately, some of them are far worse than
that (such as online sexual predators, etc). It is a rather sad state of
affairs in which we live these days.

HackFest Series: Puppet

2009-06-22 Thread Lisa Kachold
August's HackFest Lab at the Foundation for Blind Children will center
around puppet.

We will have a one-ish hour of presentation, a puppet test lab including a
fully fleshed out securely setup puppet. We will take some fest time to
show how easy it is to pull strings, maintain configurations and standards
in any network comprising two or more systems.

Please see http://www.linuxgazette.com for my July Linux Layer 8 Security
article for the lab presentation materials.

Bring your recipes to wow us, since all PLUG events are full duplex,
allowing for individual expansion and enrichment as we follow our critical
thought, rarely constrained by anything but time.

I was expecting to see SOAP under the Configure Command section of the
 output of phpinfo().

 Any help is much appreciated.

PHP SOAP uses the XML libraries. There are various specifications in
versions of implementations of SOAP depending on your platform and
version.

php soap is a compile time option (if you build your own custom php
[recommended]):

--enable-soap

or you can yum or apt-get it:

sudo yum install php-soap
sudo apt-get install php5-soap

You can also use NuSoap:

Like all GPL violations . . ., it's left to the copyright holders of
the software to engage in enforcement. I think it's great that, . . .
the Linux developers used the most common enforcement strategy in the
GPL community — quietly contact the company, inform them of their
obligations, and help them in a friendly way into compliance. That
process almost always works, and the fact that Microsoft came into
compliance shows the value of our community's standard enforcement

scraping each page, parsing to create a vector of strings and doing a a set
of nested for loop to run through each vector and compare to words in the

I heard of Apache velocity, but that seems to be for creating pages on the

Also, if you know of a local ACTIVE java forum I would love to know about
