On Sat, Oct 13, 2012 at 3:52 PM, Mayuresh mayur...@acm.org wrote: 1. How easy/difficult it is to use xterm on such phones. Well, it seems to be an installable app on android, though don't know how usable it is with virtual keyboard occupying screen area. I occasionally use Xterm on N900, but it has a keyboard that can be pulled out which makes it relatively easy to use Xterm. Terminal IDE[1] is a good choice. It gets in a lot of tools you'll be familiar from your desktop bash environment. But, beware it's a heavy package. So, if you are considering something like this do ensure that your phone has good internal storage space. Atleast 2 GB of internal storage is a safe bet. I've owned SGS and SGS2 with 8 and 16GB of internal storage and consider 8 GB to be minimum I'd settle for. 2. Do I get crontab on android which I can configure using classical text specification? (and I am assuming you get vi editor.) Using CM, you'll get vim too, IIRC. I haven't checked for crontab and don't have my phone around right now so can't check. 3. Can I do NFS/sshfs mounts to/from android phone? Yes, but not sure if all the stock kernels ship with NFS support so you might need to root and flash alternate kernels or safer bet, settle for CM. For sshfs, you can get apps from the market. 4. List can be long. So cutting it short with just one more - how similar / different is system administration on Android against Linux - particularly is there room for terminal based ways to do administration? I didn't find it particularly useful. I do try to use it as and when possible but still prefer using my laptop. But, really depends on how deep you want to go with it. Only Revision 'b1' is available now, the older revision 'a' isn't available in the market. Even if you get it, you're fine since the revision 'a' is supported by dd-wrt since a long time. Only thing is it has half RAM and storage. BTW, DD-WRT page I just checked suggests B1 is not supported for above router. Which page? You might have checked the wiki, which hasn't been updated as yet since the support for this router isn't stable as yet but the work is very much under way. You can check the supported devices here http://dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database I also find that it supports a no of 3G USB modems. That's nice. Yes, it does. But, I am not sure if the current dd-wrt build supports 3G yet. [PLUG] [X-Post] Need volunteer to hold session on 25th February at VJTI
Hello list, There has been interest shown by a few students in VJTI College, Matunga, Mumbai to hold sessions on FOSS/GNU/Linux(take you pick). As per my discussion with the ACE(Association of Computer Enthusiasts) society, they have free time on Wednesdays after 2 p.m. when they would be interested to attend sessions interesting them. We could make use of this opportunity to spread awareness of FOSS and the community amongst the students. The biggest stumbling block is the time - 2 p.m. on Wednesday, which is work hours for most. If someone has the free time and inclination, they could take up the topic of their interest and hold a session. ACE has been able to obtain permission to hold the seminar in the college and outsiders can be allowed to attend the session too. Following facilities have been arranged for 1) A room which can hold upto 50 people 2) A projector 3) A PC loaded with Linux If you need something more for holding your session, we can try and work it out. The date that we have availed is Wednesday, 25th February 2009 after 2 p.m. Couple of topics that they have suggested from their side are:- 1) Introduction to Linux(duh!) 2) Python (there's a small group of people who are interested and have begun with python) -- I know it's weird, but it does make it easier to write poetry in perl. :-) -- Larry Wall in 7... -- __ Pune GNU/Linux Users Group Mailing List: (plug-mail@plug.org.in) List Information: http://plug.org.in/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/plug-mail Send 'help' to plug-mail-requ...@plug.org.in for mailing instructions.
