Feels like it should either work as it does today or exactly as all the
other menus does. So this means that even if I don't really like it,
I'll probably change it so it on Squeezeplay devices also affects the
IR remote interface while it doesn't on Boom/Classic/Transporter. It
will probably be optional, so you can configure it to work as it does
at the moment, which could be useful for users that only uses Custom
Browse menus.

Honestly I would really like to get rid of the "Override standard track
details" option. The reason it exists is that at the time I implemented
it there wasn't any way to mix standard track details menus with third
party menus, at the moment it is through the TrackInfo api so there is
no reason Custom Browse should try to replace it.

I'll just have to get some time to actually remove it and replace it
with a TrackInfo implementation.

I completely agree, but it should do that in all menus, at least on the
same device. So the current situation where it works in the Custom
Browse menus but not in the other menus aren't a good one.

I don't agree.
TouchToPlay is the right step for all devices and its a pity that it
wasn't introduced to the Boom.
Every single untrained person I let play with the boom is confused by
seeing the song infos - sure - they find the play button in the end -
but going against (the first) intuition is always bad.

Anyway - if I remember correctly logitech did usability tests before
introducing the new behaviour so they have statistics on their side for
the newer devices.

I also didn't want to start a discussion about pro/con of TouchToPlay.
I just want consistency across my menus to not confuse my wife. She's
got enough to complain about everything logitech related already, I
don't want to give her new ammunition to tease me :D

It makes little sense on a Touch player (IMO), and no sense on Radio or Classic
players because there are dedicated Play and Add buttons (although Add isn't
add any more on Radio, not sure what the default is for IR Remote Add button,
because I've changed my config anyway).

This basic "play a single track then find something else to play" maybe works
for some users. eg. in a household with only a Touch, and not using the IR
Remote, and with small libraries. It's the difference between the aging
population, used to playing albums or more dynamic playback requirements, and
for kids that like to play the same track on repeat for an hour, then play
another track.

In a household with more devices, basic IR remote functionality inconsistency
is annoying. With each new player release comes a slightly different remote
with key ordering moved around, certain keys that would seem useful removed,
etc.

Assume you mean Touch interface, and not also IR Remote?

Would it make sense to link it with the "Override standard track details"
option? i.e. if disabled (use standard track details), this could do
touch-to-destroy like the standard Touch interface, whereas if enabled
(extended song details chosen), this could work as it does currently?

Either way, IR Remote right-arrow should always navigate, not repeat the
functionality of the play button.

How annoying that TouchToPlay was just implemented for SqueezePlay
devices :(

Can you check if you can reproduce the 'play all songs in album'
problem ?
I have a MultiLibrary-Menu ('Kids', like from your tutorial), the
checkbox is set for this menu, but only a single song is played.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] CustomBrowser and TouchToPlay ?

2010-03-24 Thread erland

IMHO, the main issue isn't really "TouchToPlay", the main issue is that
IR remote uses right arrow button to play (even though there is a play
button on the remote).

This makes it completely inconsistent if you also have a Boom or
Classic in your setup since those still show song details when you hit
the right arrow.

Touch to play in the touch interface of Squeezebox Touch isn't that bad
because it makes it consistent with some other touch based devices, like
the music player on iPod Touch/iPhone or iPeng. Unfortunately, Logitech
decided that consistent meant that IR interface and touch interface
should work exactly the same.

When/if I get some time, I'll update Custom Browse to make it
consistent with the rest of the interface, probably through a global
configuration option. It won't happen in the near future though because
I have some other stuff I like to finish first in other
applets/plugins.

Remind me if it hasn't been solved in a month or two.

2010-03-24 Thread Phil Meyer
>Welcome to the inner circle. Now you've got the honor to be able to

Yeah, I'll take the bait...

I have no interest in bitrate information (nor most other items in "More Info")
- I think you miss the point. But, touch to display bitrate information may
even perhaps be better than touch to destroy current playlist ;-)

Personally, I play albums or random mixes via MusicIP, dynamic playlist,
TrackStat, etc. Hardly ever play/add single songs. I don't build up playlists
by manual (random access) song selection. But I do often like to see details
about an item that's playing, eg. to navigate to related music through
hyperlinks, show comments, year of release, etc).

Touch-to-play for Radio stations makes sense, as there's next-to-no reason to
view details about a radio station (url is not useful!). I think this is what
touch-to-play was originally considered for, but was extended to songs too.

There would be some merit in having Touch-to-play on album context, as that is
(arguably) the most-likely action at album level.

I'm not against the interface being configured as it is, as some people seem to
like it, but why not configurable (esp. seeing that it would add consistency
across existing product range).

There was an interface that worked well on classic players. Play did a play
action, Add did an add action, navigation always navigated. Around the time
that SBC came along (less buttons?), people complained that it was too easy to
blow away the current playlist by accidentally playing a single item. This was
"cured" by the Party Mode function, which made the Play action do an add action
instead. So, Add became More. Then Party Mode was disbanded because it was
once again the seen as acceptable to be able to accidentally play an item to
blow away everything that is already queued up to play.

This was once mentioned as a blocker problem that had to be addressed before
Radio/Touch could ship, but the issue has been reduced in priority. [Can't
find the bug report at the moment, as bugzilla seems to be down]

It wouldn't be so bad if there was a better song info screen, rather than an
almost random mash-up long list of song info items and actions, in a small
window that shows only 4 items at a time.

After all, it's the new players that have changed, causing a difference,

Anyway - it is set in may case for all menus and still it doesn't
work.
I should add, that this menu was automatically created by the

I am happy that it brings up options, as I don't often want to play a single
track. This plugin is working how I would prefer the standard Browse functions
to work. I guess that if the action could be optional, that would suit
everyone.

I am having trouble though with long-touch on an album; it seems to take a
while to pop up the album context menu. In fact, it doesn't come up at all,
until finger is removed from display, unlike built-in functionality.

[Edit: Take that back - it seems to be working better now - perhaps there's
some initial pre-fetching going on that makes the UI go slow]

There's an option to change the setting, in both globally for SBS, and for each
individual menu in CustomBrowse (Custom Browse settings > Manage menus > [click
menu name] > Play all songs in selected album).

If "play all songs in selected album" is enabled, playing a song actually
queues up the whole album, but starts playback from the song you selected.
If "play all songs in selected album" is disabled, the song you play is the
only song that is played. This is my preferred setting, because you can play a
whole album at album level, and the setting may not have a valid meaning in all
menus anyway. i.e. you can have menus that return random songs, or ordered
differently, so "play all songs in selected album" is not something that makes
sense to provide at a global level.
