Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Astronomy Information Plugin - useful to amateur astronomers

2010-04-26 Thread Mitch G

Weird. My live server is running v7.4.1 of Squeezebox Server and V2.2 of
the plugin - no problem.
And I tested it with v7.5.0 of the Server and it works (after fixing
some settings in the repo and install xml files).
So, I'm not sure why V2.2 of the plugin would not work in your v7.4.3
instance.

Regardless, in the interest of ignoring good version management, I've
updated V2.2 to incorporate your suggested change (thanks for that,
btw).
It seems to load fine in 7.5.0.

Let me know if you have problems loading it in 7.4.3.

I do not have a squeezeplay-compatible version of the plugin.
It only works on softsqueeze and that ilk of hardware.

Creating a squeezeplay-compatible version is on the to-do list, but
every time I start looking into it, I get a bit overwhelmed by the
amount of work it appears it will be to support that environment.
Maybe one day.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Astronomy Information Plugin - useful to amateur astronomers

2010-04-26 Thread cparker

Hi Mitch

Thought I would have a nose at this, as sounds really interesting. I
manually downloaded it as the repo kept timing out. When I installed
it, it throws up a function depreciated error. (v7.4.3)

For line 69 in the settings.pm file;
sub name {
return Slim::Web::HTTP::protectName('PLUGIN_ASTROINFO');
}

This needs to be changed to;
sub name {
return Slim::Web::HTTP::CSRF->protectName('PLUGIN_ASTROINFO');
}

Then it will work but I just wondered if I'm using the wrong version
(2.2) as it doesnt appear on Squeezeplay but does on Softsqueeze!? :s

Cheers

2008-08-17 Thread Mitch G

Due to a change in how SC7.1 reads in plugins, V2.0a was not compatible
with SC7.1. So, there is now a V2.1 available (see first post for link)
that is compatible with 7.1.
It is functionally identical to V2.0a. So, you only need to download
V2.1 if moving to SC7.1 (or later releases).

Please let me know if you encounter any problems.

First the good news: I've got an SC7 version ready. It wasn't that hard
after all. But, I'm not releasing it yet - see next item.

Now the bad(ish) news: I just discovered that the Heavens-Above data is
not being displayed correctly. This is true for the pre-SC7 version as
well. The problem is that they changed the formatting of the webpage
and so the plugin doesn't find the right data. This has happened before
and I just adapted the parser to deal withe new format. But, I thought I
would email the Heavens-Above people and see if there was a way I could
access the raw data and thus not have to worry about page format
changes. I haven't heard back yet (just having sent the email), but I'm
not going to release V2.0 (the SC7 version) or update V1.5 until I hear
back from them or Wednesday - whichever comes first.

It also fixes a small bug where some garbage text would get displayed

Bradley: I never intended the plugin to be for use during an observing

see if I should get off my butt and do some observing. That ain't gonna
happen if I'm on the couch after midnight. I'll see what I can do, but
I'm not making any promises - the real problem comes on the last day of
the month and having to figure out that the next date in the CSC data is
the first of the next month.

JJ: I haven't seen anything with a graphical moon display. But, I don't
really pay attention to the graphical plugins since my old SB can't
support it. But, with a small amount of imagination my plugin tells you
how full the moon is which you can then picture in your mind's eye. :)

Well, that could be confusing, especially late in the observing session
when folks are getting groggy. After all, your "screensaver" could tell
us whether it's worth hanging out until dawn! I, for one, certainly
wouldn't want to be misled.

Technically, if your last time period is until 4am, then the "update"
shouldn't occur until after 4am.

I'm from the school that you put in the time to build something once
and build it right.

Those are my thoughts. Thanks again for the great plugin.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Astronomy Information Plugin - useful to amateur astronomers

2007-05-08 Thread Mitch G

After thinking about it a bit, the easiest path will be to just provide
clearsky clock information for "this evening."
Otherwise, I have to add another layer of menus to keep things from
getting cluttered.

So, instead of providing the CSC summaries for cloud cover etc. for two
evenings as it does currently, it'll just be for the evening hours of
the given day. The data will be presented in blocks of time, probably
7-10, 10-1, 1-4 and will average the data for each block of time.

Now, this will mean (because I'm too lazy to make it smarter), if you
look at a clock after midnight, it'll be showing the data for the next
evening and not for the evening that is in progress.

Does that seem reasonable?

The problem is that that period is large and in a fast changing weather
pattern, you may indicate worse or better than it actually is. Maybe
you could break it into several conditons for timeslots such as 7pm -
10pm, 10pm - 1am and 1am-3am. I usually will observe during one of
the first two periods at home, but if at a star party will go for all
three.

What do you think?

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Astronomy Information Plugin - useful to amateur astronomers

2007-05-04 Thread Mitch G

The CSC data is an average from 7PM to 3AM for the two dates it provides
data for. I figured that was generally when people observe.
The very first version used to show the hour-by-hour data, but it was
displayed as numbers corresponding to the values for each hour and
wasn't very user friend. So, I went with the averaging approach
figuring that it would provide enough information to at least decide
whether or not to check the website.

I've toyed with the idea of showing a graphical display (a bar chart
sort of thing showing the data for each hour), but haven't taken the
step of figuring out how to do that and then implementing it.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Astronomy Information Plugin - useful to amateur astronomers

2007-05-04 Thread Bradley

Thanks for making this helpful plugin. I have it programmed to display
on the SB on my roof deck (which is where I do observing).

I see that its reading corresponds to the date, but what about to the
current time?

The clear sky clocks cycle from poor conditions to excellent or vice
versa.

Does what the plugin says correspond to the current time or is it some
kind of average?

How about the possiblity of a modification showing the trend of each of
the scales instead of taking up space with tomorrow's conditions? For
example showing dusk through dawn for the area selected with a time for
each reading, just like the csc? Could be text or graphics based and
would be more helpful to let one know that conditions will improve
later (stay up late) or get worse (pack it in now). I often don't
check the csc before hauling my stuff up to the roof, so it would be
nice to have it there on the SB.

Once again, thanks for the plugin.

Not everyone would see this bug, but if the plugin was giving incorrect
results for moon, ISS and IRR data, then you'll want this updated
version.

Well, you caught me.
I'm embarrassed to admit that I can't figure out how to do that - zip
it with the folder name. Whenever I do try to include the path, it zips
up the entire chain of directories from C:\Program Files ... on down.

Thanks for the quick response Mitch.

Problem solved. The directory is suposed to be named 'AstroInfo'. I
created a directory called 'Astroinfo' (case sensitive according to the
comments in the code). Might help to zip it up including the 'AstroInfo'
folder.

Thanks again

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Astronomy Information Plugin - useful to amateur astronomers

2007-02-11 Thread Mitch G

OK. I just loaded Slim 6.5.1 (which includes Perl 5.8.8) and downloaded
the plugin from the website and things are working fine.

The only time I've seen the error you mention is when there's some
syntax error in the plugin that is not more gracefully detected.
So, right now my only guess is that there was a glitch when
downloading/extracting the plugin that messed up something.

If any of the older plugins worked, then try redownloading the latest
version again and see if that works.

Let me know what comes of this.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Astronomy Information Plugin - useful to amateur astronomers

2007-02-11 Thread Mitch G

No, there aren't any prerequisites.
I'm assuming this is the first time you're trying the plugin.
So, try grabbing the previous version of the plugin:
http://www.jesslex.com/plugins/V1.2_AstroInfo.zip

And, let me know if that works.
If that doesn't work, try grabbing V1.1_AstroInfo.zip at the same
address and let me know if that works.

In the meantime I'm going to try a couple of things at my end and see
if I can find the cause of the problem.

I am trying to install the plugin on a windows platform:

SlimServer Version: 6.5.1 - 11206 - Windows Server 2003 - EN - cp1252
Perl Version: 5.8.8 MSWin32-x86-multi-thread

I am getting the following error message:

Are there any pre-requisites I am not aware of?

Thanks for any help

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Astronomy Information Plugin - useful to amateur astronomers

2007-02-08 Thread Mitch G

V1.3 of the AstroInfo plugin is now available.
V1.3 only makes a couple of minor changes:
- Fixes a problem where the moon rise and set times were "unknown."
- Maintains the moon rise and set time ordering of Heavens-Above.
Heavens-Above sometimes shows the set time before the rise time
depending on where we are in the moon cycle.
- Supports the case when Heavens-Above indicates the moon does not rise
or set on a given day
- Adds a delay between showing today's date and showing the menu. When
originally written, in Slim6.2, there was a natural delay which allowed
the date to be on the screen for a second or so. With Slim6.5, I found
it was too fast, so I added a delay to force the date to be on the
screen for a second or two.

As always, let me know if you have any questions or comments.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: Astronomy Information Plugin - useful to amateur astronomers

2006-02-11 Thread Mitch G

AstroInfo is a plugin that displays:

o Clear Sky Clock information for the next one or two evenings
depending on when it is invoked and the data presented by the o Clear
Sky Clock webpage. An "evening" consists of the time fram starting
between 7PM and midnight and ending at 3AM.
(Note to the 60 of you who might care: Last week, I announced a Cleark
Sky Clock plugin. The ClearSkyClock plugin is now depracated and
replaced by the AstroInfo plugin.)

o Current moon data consisting of the percentage full the moon is and
when it is scheduled to set next.

o Listing of any Iridium flares scheduled for the next 24 hours.

You can find a download page for the plugin here:
http://www.wideopenwest.com/~jesslex/plugins/astroinfo_plugin.html

Any comments can be directed to this thread or via private message.

Thanks,

Mitch

--- More Information About Clear Sky Clocks and Iridium Flares --

Clear Sky Clocks are used by amateur astronomers to see the forecasts
related to key weather phenomenon for stargazing: cloud cover,
transparency, and seeing.
More information about what a Clear Sky Clock is can be found at:
http://cleardarksky.com/csk/index.html.

Iridium flares occur when the sun reflects off satellites that are used
for the Iridium satellite phone service. They are pretty nifty and it's
worth trying to catch one sometime. More information about them can be
found at www.heavens-above.com.
