Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC, iPlayer Listen Again...

2009-09-29 Thread Adlopa

Oddly, the iPlayer Favourite streams have started working after a recent
update — I've been using nightly builds of 7.4.0 that seem to be updated
pretty much every day... I've now moved to 7.4.1 beta.

By 'working' I mean that the SqueezeboxServer Favourites for those BBC
daily shows now grab the most recent show for that day, rather than
expire after 7 days —*just what I wanted. I'm not sure if this is the
result of a SS update or an new version of the iPlayer plugin...

That said, I'm still having alarm problems, but I don't this is
related, so I won't derail this thread with it.

You can use BBCiPlayer plugin both inside and outside the UK. UK users
get the higher quality streams and MP3. Non UK users cannot get the MP3
streams.

You can force MP3 streams if you disable the AAC filetype in WebUI
Settings/Advanced/Filetypes.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC, iPlayer Listen Again...

2009-09-16 Thread Adlopa

Well, there appears to be something funky going on with either
SqueezeCenter or the iPlayer plugin. There are five valid static daily
feeds under Home BBC iPlayer BBC Local Radio BBC London Danny
Baker Mon/Tue/etc, just like with the old AlienBBC set-up and these
work as expected when manually selected. However, they don't work as
Favourites — each Favourite is blank once each new programme is made
available.

It seems that the Favourite gets broken when a new programme is
assigned to each day's programme under Home BBC iPlayer BBC Local
Radio BBC London Danny Baker Mon/Tue/etc. So, if I favourite the
Monday programme today, it'll work until next Monday afternoon, when the
new Monday programme supersedes it.

Is this a SqueezeCenter issue, or a problem with the iPlayer plugin?

episode within a brand matches those expectations.

Hm, but this *is* how some programmes are identified under the iPlayer
plugin, which is why I'm a little puzzled (disclaimer: I know nothing
about how iPlayer works).

So, this would make sense if the plugin listed, for example, Danny
Baker 14/09/09, but it doesn't — it just lists Monday, Tues, etc under
Home BBC iPlayer BBC Local Radio BBC London Danny Baker
(for the purposes of my example).

When these direct links are used, they *always* link to the most recent
show for that day — 'Tuesday is yesterday, 'Wednesday' is last week.
This is great and just what I need.

The problem (for me) is that I want to use these shows as alarms and
for that I need to save them Favourites. This is the problem — while
those direct links always seem to be updated with new shows, the updates
aren't rolled through to the Favourites, which breaks the alarms.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC, iPlayer Listen Again...

2009-09-15 Thread Adlopa

Alas, those five daily links for the Danny Baker show on iPlayer don't
appear to be working, though I'm not sure why.

Last week, I set the Monday show (Home BBC iPlayer BBC Local Radio
BBC London Danny Baker Monday) as a Favourite and at the
weekend, it was indeed playing last Monday's (7th) show.

This morning, however, when that Favourite was due to play via an alarm
(which should now be yesterday's show - the 14th), it was empty — there
was no rtmp link inside.

Oddly, manually playing the link from Home BBC iPlayer BBC Local
Radio BBC London Danny Baker Monday was fine.

Is this a glitch in the iPlayer plugin, or an unfortunate side-effect
of how the iPlayer service works?

Hi Guys, sorry to butt in here so late in the thread but I'm getting
very confused!

Are we saying that we can now get everything that BBC Radio puts out
(both listen again and live streams) through the iPlayer plugin, in
native Squeezebox friendly formats (so no transcoding needed on the
server)?

I noticed this blog post a couple of weeks ago:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/bbcinternet/2009/08/improvements_to_bbc_local_radi.html

That just adds to my confusion, will the format now be mp3, Flash (or
is that just a wrapper around mp3 and we somehow extract the mp3 from
it), AAC or WMA???

Then there's the previously mentioned page:
http://iplayerhelp.external.bbc.co.uk/help/playing_programmes/local_radio_real_media/

Or are we saying the RealAudio support will continue? I'm so confused!

Once BBC made the XML feed available, it was expected that AlienBBC

I don't think the small differences in program availability justifies
the effort maintaining screen scraping the web interface. So AlienBBC
users should try to use BBCiPlayer as their main BBC plugin and comment
on problems/shortcoming.

I think AlienBBC can be replaced with a plugin which just does
RealAudio transcoding so that few remaining RealAudio stations such as
RAI and RTE can still be played.

The specific item I was looking for was The Essay on Radio 3.

It appeared in the AlienBBC listings, but not in the iPlayer listings.
Though I couldn't get it to play with AlienBBC.

There was evidently something weird about this, as iPlayer Downloader
on my Mac (which is not the official BBC item, but a third-party
program) showed The Essay as a listing but would not download it. I
think it may have got included at the end of a concert, but didn't feel
like getting the whole concert.

My general impression is that AlienBBC often shows more programs for a
given day than iPlayer.

Also that they often begin the listings at different times of day, one
might start at 5 a.m. and the other at 9 a.m., for instance.

Since I mostly listen to talk programs, the better quality of the
iPlayer streams isn't of any importance to me.

2 Episodes (9th 10th sept.) of The Essay now appears in BBCiPlayer
plugin and they play OK for me. However 3 episodes (7th , 9th 10th
Sept)appear in AlienBBC which takes its info from the web pages.

I think the diffference between AlienBBC and BBCiPlayer is as follows.

AlienBBC uses web pages and the web pages are created ahead of
broadcast for the scheduled programs. When programs are broadcast the
link to the audio file are added. BBC days can also span midnight as
they start at about 5am and so can result in iPlayer programs being
available for 8 days. BBCiPlayer plugin feed is generated from the
available audio files and rigourously enforces the 7 days rule.

So AlienBBC can show program info but not have content and also
sometimes can show one or two more episodes than BBCiPlayer.

I think the BBCiPLayer XML feed is created by BBC on a regular basis
(e.g. once an hour) rather than a realtime response to some sort of
database lookup and so some programs will take some time after broadcast
before they appear in the XML feed and so in BBCiPlayer.

I think BBCiPlayer creates the each day schedule by sorting/filtering a
list of programs. So the AlienBBC start time of 5am is what BBC
supplied, the BBCiPlayer 9am start time maybe a plugin choice.

I find, though, that the schedule lists from iPlayer and AlienBBC are

While both are sourced from data at the BBC ... the BBC sources do not
come from the indentical root source ... so there can be differences.

In theory, during Wednesday 16 the source that AlienBBC is using for
BBC local radio should be working better ... but with WMA rather than RA
as the content.

Can you give some specific examples.

Is it a case of AlienBBC
* showing more days
* fewer or more programs on a specific days
* different programs for the same time slot compared to BBCiPlayer

Interesting... With the upgrade to v7.4.28505 of SS, I can now see five
daily shows for Danny Baker under Home BBC iPlayer BBC Local Radio
BBC London Danny Baker. I don't think they were there under 7.3,
but it didn't occur to me to look under the iPlayer plugin settings for
this functionality rather than AlienBBC...

Hopefully, these will simply stream the most recent show for that day
and remain static - just like the old RP links did. I won't find out
until Monday afternoon, when that day's (14th Sep) show will (or should)
replace the oldest show (7th Sep).

Triode — any idea if those five links are going to work before I see
for myself on Monday..?

Another user has posted that the BBC has somehow turned off RealAudio
Listen Again for Local radio. So under AlienBBC the entry will appear
but the program will not play. The BBC have said that RealAudio
programs will remain so it is likely to be an error which will be fixed
int time.

In future, use BBCiPlayer as your main BBC player since it now provides
all the same functionality as AlienBBC using proper BBC feeds and
consequently it appears there will be no reason to continue support for
AlienBBC getting program info from Web pages.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC, iPlayer Listen Again...

2009-09-11 Thread Adlopa

Just to update everyone on this — I have been in touch with the BBC
about this change, but I've yet to get a meaningful reply. At the
moment, I'm still at the This is how you use iPlayer stage with its
iPlayer tech support people, but I'll keep plugging away until I get
through to someone that can understand the problem.

If anyone else has any ideas in the meantime...

AlienBBC does list Danny Baker (in my example) under Home Alien BBC
BBC Local Radio BBC LondonDanny Baker - Mon, 07 Sep 2009
Danny Baker - other episodes, but these are unique daily show links that
can't be used to play last Friday's show, regardless of which week it
is.

I don't quite follow Triode's posts about skin-changing — can you
elaborate..?

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC, iPlayer Listen Again...

2009-09-11 Thread ModelCitizen

Since I installed 7.4, decided I really didn't like it and reverted back
to 7.3.3 my alarms have stopped working. They seem to be playing, but
they are silent. My alarms use my BBC Radio 4 iPlayer favourite.

If I choose to play the Radio 4 playlist favourite directly however it
plays just fine.

Could this be the same problem described above?

The URL organisation is the BBC's responsibility. AlienBBC and
BBCiPlayer display and play the programs according to the lists the BBC
provides.

For a few programmes and mostly for UK listeners - there are podcasts
so that Composer of the Week can be played using.

http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/radio3/cotw/rss.xml

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC, iPlayer Listen Again...

2009-09-06 Thread bpa

One line of enquiry which I never fully explored was the fact that
program brands have a fixed code - Composer of the week is b006tnxf .
This code can be used to get info iniCal format such as

The COTW programmes currently on iPlayer
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006tnxf/episodes/player.ics

Upcoming COTW programmmes
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006tnxf/episodes/upcoming.ics

I never looked further to see if there are equivalent XML/RSS feeds
using the code.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC, iPlayer Listen Again...

Did a quick test

The following gives an XML of Danny Bakers current epsiodes on iPlayer
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p001d7kl/episodes/player.xml

Similarly for COTW
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006tnxf/episodes/player.xml

Bad news is that I think BBCiPlayer will need a new parser to handle
these sort of XML.

2009-09-06 Thread Triode

You should already be able to add a brand/series menu to your favorites
by clicking the heart icon in web interface on the relavent menu. This
is intended to store the relavent information to always build the latest
menu for that brand/series. I think you can then add this to the alarm
playlist, but I have not checked how it will work and also which entry
you will get.

The Favorite idea doesn't work - it generates a Favorite with an URL
such as

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/availability/bbc_london.xml?Danny%20Baker

but the response does not play as a Favorite or even have only Danny
Baker. It looks like the full BBC London schedule.

Ok - the problem is that the default skin is using javascript to do this
and it bypasses setting the parser...

Try setting a favorite using the classic skin and it should work..
However this is going to produce an xmlbrowser list which is not the
same as something which is direcly playable - may need some more work.

Same frustration with Composer of the Week on Radio 3. Would love to

But I suspect it's the BBC's doing, not Alien or BBCPlayer.
