1400c parts

2003-02-27 Thread Thad Hoffman
Anyone know of a good site for replacement parts for a pbook 1400c?

I had a link pre-new harddrive, but can't find it anymore. It had parts for
all Apple laptops...

I'm looking for an additional ac cord and the top lid piece (near the
hindges). I have a hairline crack on the left side that is only cosmetic,
but I'm starting to obsess on it. :-)

thx

You can also pick up learning CodeWarrior off ebay for <$40. New is around
$50 i think.

It will let you build apps (SIOUX and Mac) but not dll's/slib etc...
Has a debugger and full features, just limits what you can build and how big
the app can be.

Prices are even cheaper for Academic versions.

I can't be positive, because I bought it used. It came with 40mb (16
mobo + 24), and I recently added the other 24mb. It was originally a
1400c 166mhz, and I think most of those came stock with 16mb on the

In answer to your original question, I'm also pretty sure that you
won't find a 1-piece 64mb RAM chip for the 1400c.

allows Mac, Win, and Palm compiling.

Email their support and they will hook you up. They got me set up and were

Re: 1400c RAM Stacking (was Re: ATA Hard Drives/PCMCIA slot)

2003-02-27 Thread Thad Hoffman
from Apple's knowledge base:

Possible solutions:

   1) Try reseating the memory card. A memory card that has become
unseated will give this error.

   2) Apple has worked closely with developers of third-party
(non-Apple) memory upgrades and have identified timing issues between
the added RAM and the Power 1400 series computers. Many of these third
party memory vendors are now modifying their cards to allow for proper
signal timing.

Customers that have added third-party memory upgrades that are not
being recognized, or that report memory errors after reseating the
memory card, should contact the vendor of the memory upgrade.

I own a stackable 32meg card for the 1400 (plug on top and bottom). And it's
stacked 32 on the bottom and 16 on top and works fine.

   Jake

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote...>

32 Meg modules are not stackable. 24s and smaller are. Even though the Max
RAM

in that slot is 48, it must be done with either 2-24s or a single 48 module.
Why?

I have no idea, but probably is something in the RAM recognition side of the

ROM. GURU shows many combinations of the 4, 8, 16 and 24 Meg modules, but
shows

the 32 Meg and 48 Meg modules as being only allowed as single units.)

You can stack the RAM that allows stacking even if you have the 16 Meg Apple

setup. (8 on the MB and 8 in the Apple expansion slot.) I have a 1400 running

that way now while my other uses a single 48 Meg, the 8 on the MB and a 4 Meg
in

the Apple slot. The only problem with the stacked RAM is when attempting to
use a

3rd party video card. The Apple 8 bit card can be used in the stacked module

1400, but the 16 bit 3rd party card is larger and will not allow the top RAM

module to be installed. (The 16 bit card had to be put in the 1400 with the

single 48 Meg module.)

Both have G3 upgrades,([EMAIL PROTECTED] and [EMAIL PROTECTED]) which don't interfere
with any other

upgrades. I'd love to upgrade the 4 Meg Apple RAM module to an 8, but they
are a

terrible buy per Meg and not worth the investment for the tiny gain. RAM
Doubler

has a better bang for the buck, allowing triple the RAM under OS 9.1, without

slowing them very much.

There is a problem with one of the Sonnet extensions; they had to issue an
update for compatibility with VPC 4.0.

I forget which version was this specific fix but if you use the latest
Sonnet extension, it will not be the cause of any problem with VPC at least.

I get an "insufficient memory" error with my 60 meg 1400; when I posted
about it here, someone with the 64 megs installed replied that VPC 4 did
work for them. My "goal" was VPC4/Win98. VPC 3/Win95 is working fine
though.

PB 1400 RAM is sometimes voodoo. Depending entirely on the RAM cards
involved, some machines may work with a total of 3 RAM cards (1 apple
+ 2 stackable) and some may not. There seems to be no rhyme or
reason, just experimental observations. You can get to 64 megs of
RAM, but you are more likely to be able to do so if you only use 2
RAM cards. YMMV.

add the Chooser and the Appleshare Chooser extension (those bits from the NAD seem to
work OK) to access your AS network volumes. I'm browsing volumes on my G3 DT under
9.2.2 from my 5300 as I type this. There
_should_ be enough room to install a enet PC card driver along with basic enet
support, but I've not tested that yet.

The end result of the above procedure provided me with a close approximation of the
good ol' Network Access Disk, but for PBs 5300/190/2300.

I thought there was a version of CodeWarrrior that could make Windows
apps, much like the full version of the Mac version of RealBasic can
make Windows apps (I realize RealBasic isn't a C compiler.)

Even so, if Windows software is what you want to create, I'd think the
whole process woule be better to do it on a PC, yes?

Hmm...probably, though it might be too thick, that sounds like an
17-18mm drive.

Electronically, it will work fine...Apples Drive Setup will format
virtually any 2.5" ATA drive out there.

The 2.5 inch form factor is a set size, in terms of width and length,
though mounting holes will vary. They do vary a bit in
thickness...modern powerbooks are limited to 12mm or less, iirc.

With caveats.

Ram Doubler worked well up to about OS 8.1, but Apple made considerable
improvements in VM with 8.6 and up, at which point Ram Doubler's value
decreased considerably, especially since there are a lot of things that
conflict with it.

I believe that I first suggested such drives in previous similar threads. I have two
of the TravelStar 8E drives, which work on several PowerBook 3400c's with no problems.
I remember talking with IBM Technical Support staff just after I bought my first
drive. They said that the drives should work with PowerBooks, but they were not in a
position to answer specific Macintosh-related questions. At no time did they state
that the drives were "not compatible with Macs." It is a simple matter of formatting
the drives for Macs with the Apple Drive Setup or similar third-party utilities.

RD is basically a Virtual Memory program that works better than Apple's. (I'm sure
someone can jump in to explain exactly how it does this.) It has the same
limitations with opening some apps, although others treat it as real RAM (very
slow real RAM!!!)

I'd check with people on the LEM Swap list and eBay. RAM Modules show up
occasionally. They are available from some of the Mac RAM supply houses, but are
very pricey. (I got my 48 from the LEM Swap list and my stackable 24s on eBay.)

You must have always gotten the good modules and I the bad. I have never been
able to get 32s to stack with 16s. I also have never had a problem with the
16Meg Apple RAM and stacked 3rd party modules that others say they've always
had. There must be some real extremes in the production of the 3rd party RAM
modules, which is very un-Apple. Perhaps the European specs differed from the
US specs? Perhaps those modules lacking the pass through connector are
incapable of being used in a stack at all? I've never seen a 32 Meg with a pass
through connector, but that doesn't mean they don't exist.

I've tried VPC 4/ME on both of my 1400/G3s and found that it wouldn't work. I
originally assumed that it was because RD is a VM, although much quicker and more
efficient than Apple's VM. I since have heard of many people having trouble with
PBs that had Sonnet G3 upgrades refusing to run VPC. Whichever is the cause (or
perhaps a combination of the 2?) I haven't been able to operate VPC 4 on a 1400.
(Perhaps ME is the culprit as it is as memory hungry as 9.1. A different
Windoze/DOS version of VPC 4 might work.) VPC 3/95 and OS 8.1 worked fine with
64 Meg and a G3.

Ken,

I'm using one on my PB3400. Works fine. I inquired of the list as well
before buying on e-bay and got affirmatives.

I do have some extension incompatibility with (I think) ValueFax if I
try to save from the PB3400 HD to the IBM TS, especially large files.
Extensions off and No problem.

I think the IBM TS is a good value. but I think I'd go with a 25gig
next time.

Re: ATA Hard Drives/PCMCIA slot

2003-02-27 Thread Ken Norris (dialup)
Hi List,

I did a Google search on TravelStar 8E and 10E. The results were that the
tech specs on these external card slot drives show that they are not
comptible with Macs, only with PC's. They contain built-in software for
Windows.

If someone is using one of these on a Mac PB, I'd like to konow how they did
it, please.

Does anyone know of any _other_ card slot drives that will work on my PB
1400?

Ken N.

What, exactly does RD do? I'm stuck at 48mb without VM on, and with the CF
card providing 116 mb additional RAM. but it's too slow (it does prevent
total hangs or crashes, though).

I am trying to run Runtime Revoulution on my 1400c, and th IDE is OK 'til I
try to pen the docs, then it slows to a snail's pace (basically unworkable)
after that.

Will RD help?

Where can I get a 48mb RAM card?

AFAIK, OS8 requires OT, which I doubt can be squeezed onto a floppy. I
built an OS 8.1 disk but I haven't tried it yet on the 5300. If that
works (classic networking - ie: pre-OT), one could do an entire HFS+
format and install (using remote disk images and utilities of course.)
I'll write a report when I get around to trying it.

Those are the OT bits to which Drew was referring I think.

Uhhh Drew?, now is that the _most_ complicated way you could think of to
do this? I'd issue a challenge right now to _beat_ those contortions,
but I've already spent wy too much time futzing with this.

Depends on the complexity of the documents but you can easily get to the
text in any kind of text file with apps like BBEdit lite or CanOpener.
You's also get some garbage.

Probably your best bet if there are a lot is to get them onto a friend's Mac

I just happened to have the 19-part install images on disk - and for
fun i tried to install it on an extra hd, seems like you don't need
to convert the first 19 parts at all, just click on the first one and
the installer will read the images just as they are - without
mounting or chunking, the only need to be in the same folder as each
other the first image seems to be a special version of diskcopy, when
you continue to upgrade to 0S 7.5.5 (that is also free) you need to
download from the net 4 more images and they all need to be expanded
on your hd for the upgrader to function, for this one you will need
disk copy. Not so much work at all if the 7600 has a relatively fast
internet connection. The install and upgrade was about 10-15 minutes
(I cooked meanwhile aswell) and restarted !
The 19 images are 22mb all together and about 1.1mb each, the 7.5.5
upgrade 5mbs in size, it's not too big.

Well, I don't know about the 7.6 disk tools image, but the 8.1 image
definitely is on Apple's site:

Then you could download OT 1.1.1 or 1.1.2 in disk-image sized pieces
(actually, each piece IS a disk image - alternatively, you can do the
"net install" download and chunk it up yourself, but this is probably
harder):

This, if I remember correctly, was one option I had mentioned a while
ago. The other was for me to send you the minimal system 7.5.2 w/
PowerBook 5300 Enabler as a floppy image, then download OT 1.1.1 on
top of that. Same effect, though.

Have you tried Gamba's site at all? I know he used to have links to
Disk Tools images (and some rather illegitimate sources of system 7
and OS 8).

Peace,
Drew

Re: OS installation without CD drive: SOS!

2003-02-27 Thread victoria brandon
Hi Drew - Dan - John,

Thanks for your help. It's mostly moot since I'm expecting to get the SCSI
adapter and install that way (custom, definitely), but will save the
instructions about putting together a networkable floppy for future
reference: after all, who knows what trouble I might get myself into in the
future? The idea of downloading 19 disk images and converting them so as to
install 7.5.x merely in order to reactivate the network to then install 8.5
has so little appeal it would almost be better to turn the PB into a
doorstop, but fortunately such a procedure shouldn't be necessary.

Drew said:
> I'm sorry you couldn't make it work. I still think you might be

Howzat? Not only is there no such thing in the 8.5 installation tome,
there's nothing with that name (that is "OpenTransport" all by itself
without "lib" or some other qualifier) on my 7600 running 8.6 -- and it does
AppleTalk perfectly. So too did the 5300 before its recent lobotomy.

And:

Exactly! Please!

> disks, discard the usual utility pair to make enough room. You'll need to

I tried to do this (more or less), using the 8.5 Disk Tools disk, which
aside from unadorned 7.5 (which won't boot the 5300) was the only one I had.
The network remained invisible. Where do you get the 7.5.3 and/or 7.6 Disk
Tools anyway? All I could find on Apple's site, aside from the unworkable
Network Access disk, was the abovementioned massive 19 part whole kit and
kaboodle 7.5.x.

Anyway again, thanks loads, and all will be well.

Best,
Victoria

To answer my own "problem." I guess the problem I had was that I was
trying to launch the new Disk Copy while the disk image was still
mounted. the Finder was trying to launch the one from the image rather
than the copy I had put on the hard drive.

Thanks.

Yes, but you'll have to go to the USR (NOT 3Com) web site to find the
required modem script.

You will most likely need the all-encompasing "V.90 Modems" script.

Check for the USR code, such as XJxxx6, where xxx=a sub-model code, to ensure
that the V.90 script is the correct one. It probably is.

I've used a wide variety of USR cards in my 190s and 5300s, some branded
"Dell" or others, but most branded "USRobotics" or "Meahertz", and all work
very well with the "V.90 Modems" script.

These are probably the best PCMCIA modems out there.

i've not tried RD on my 1400c/G3, but I do have it on my an 040 610 machine running
8.1 with only 8 megs of ram. It allows me to run Office, Netscape, and MacHTTP on it
rather solidly. I think it uses some sort of RAM disk-like thing for the vm, but not
certain.

I've had trouble with it before on a PM7200, but those machines had memory troubles
from the get-go...

I'll pull that 8mb Apple ram card out and try to stack the 16 and 32 meg chip again
when I get home. Would be cool to get it to work, 56 megs of RAM would help out a
bit... every meg counts :-)

Interesting. Downloaded fine and the disk image of Disk Copy mounted

A puzzle. I am trying to launch it under OS9.1, 6360, 400mhz NewerTech G3

IBM/US Robotics PC Card Modem

2003-02-27 Thread Dan Palka
I have this PCMCIA modem that I pulled out of an IBM ThinkPad that was
just a little bit newer than the PowerBook 190cs that I bought.

It has a US Robotics logo on it, but also a very large IBM logo.

On the back it says IBM Modem FRU: 04k0054

Then theres a divider.

Then it says:

Model XJ1560

This product manufactured by U.S. Robotics Corporation.

Thres also a bar code with what I'm assuming is a serial number which
reads: 106614|85RYS

Finally on the front it says:

Data/Fax Modem
V.34 33.6Kbps/56 Kbps with XJACK Connector..

Will this thing work in the PowerBook 190cs?

I've not tried RD on my 1400 (well, ever, really, ); does the MacOS see it
as "real" RAM or as virtual mem that just happens to work better? Of
course Connectix site is pretty useless for older softwares now.

This might help me with getting VPC 4 to work; on my 1400/G3 with 60 RAM
not 64, there just isn't enough "real" mem open, even with a minimal
system, for VPC 4's different memory allocation scheme to be happy and let
me run the program. I have plenty of horsepower to run VPC/Win98, just
can't get the VPC 4 to run.

And which version of RD are you using with your 9.1?

Thanks,

Brian

Apple RAM card, there is only 8MB on the logic board that little card
provides a further 4 or 8 MB.

Simply not true. I have configured many 1400 with a 16 and a 32.

Some Ram module are not stackable at all, they lack a pass thru connector.

I have heard of problems with certain 16 and 32 not working together,
likewise people not being able to change the 4MB Apple card for an 8MB one.
In the tens of 1400s I've worked on I've never seen these problems but they
have been reported often enough on the list to suggest that some Ram modules
are problematic.

Best wishes

Yes, that is the 8Mb Apple ram card (the other 8Mb is soldered to the
underside of the motherboard)
Try removing it to see if your 2 cards work together, if not then your 32Mb
is not stackable.
Ben.

Re: 1400c RAM Stacking (was Re: ATA Hard Drives/PCMCIA slot)

2003-02-27 Thread David Allen
32 Meg modules are not stackable. 24s and smaller are. Even though the Max RAM
in that slot is 48, it must be done with either 2-24s or a single 48 module. Why?
I have no idea, but probably is something in the RAM recognition side of the
ROM. GURU shows many combinations of the 4, 8, 16 and 24 Meg modules, but shows
the 32 Meg and 48 Meg modules as being only allowed as single units.)

You can stack the RAM that allows stacking even if you have the 16 Meg Apple
setup. (8 on the MB and 8 in the Apple expansion slot.) I have a 1400 running
that way now while my other uses a single 48 Meg, the 8 on the MB and a 4 Meg in
the Apple slot. The only problem with the stacked RAM is when attempting to use a
3rd party video card. The Apple 8 bit card can be used in the stacked module
1400, but the 16 bit 3rd party card is larger and will not allow the top RAM
module to be installed. (The 16 bit card had to be put in the 1400 with the
single 48 Meg module.)

Both have G3 upgrades,([EMAIL PROTECTED] and [EMAIL PROTECTED]) which don't interfere
with any other
upgrades. I'd love to upgrade the 4 Meg Apple RAM module to an 8, but they are a
terrible buy per Meg and not worth the investment for the tiny gain. RAM Doubler
has a better bang for the buck, allowing triple the RAM under OS 9.1, without
slowing them very much.

David Allen
