RE: [NF] CompUSA to close (was Re: [NF] -Digital Photo Frame)

2007-12-19 Thread mrgmhale
I think it really due to two other issues:

1) CompUSA lost focus and began to get into more consumer electronics (TVs)
as opposed to remaining in their niche,

2) with so much invested by Mexican investors recently (over $2 billion),
and the US Dollar slipping against pretty much every significant currency
(including the Mexican Peso!), the investors' capital investment would have
lost money even if CompUSA was nominally profitable.

I think it is more a matter of these particular Mexican investors pulling
out of a US investment due to currency devaluation when it is held in US $,
plus the relatively poor performance of CompUSA to boot. I do not foresee
the US $ becoming stronger as long as we have a mad man at the helm
continuing to mortgage our great-grandchildrens' futures for the self
acclaimed Greater Good with his insane swipe at Iraq that serves no real
purpose than to line the pockets of the various corporations that profit
from the war. Further, the Chinese hold a lot of US securities, government
and private, and at some point they too will tire of the slipping US $
valuation and dump those securities. You think gasoline and food is
expensive now? Just wait until that piper gets paid! CompUSA is just the
first of several such bailing foreign investors to come, IMHO...

2007-12-19 Thread David Smith
There are certainly some areas where I make real efforts to buy locally,
mostly entertainment items like video games, DVD's, music and so on. The
situation I face is that with two SuperCenters within 15 miles of my home,
Walmart has essentially taken over my local retail environment. This is
where online comes in for me. My support of entertainment purchases is
really more of a anti-Walmart move than an anti-online move. I completely
reject the concept that I should in some way feel guilty about buying online
vs locally, I don't believe that is where the threat to the small retailer
truly lies. If anything, the advent of online shopping has made my local
retailers more diversified and a whole lot more competitive in terms of
price and customer service than they ever were before, and as a consumer, I
like that and support it through my purchasing.

I don't follow. You're saying that bookstores used to offer superior

bookstores having to cut wages to compete, which then results in poor

Sounds to me like most people don't value the sort of service that

  You get much better service
And you pay a premium for it which is due to economies of scale.

I bought a 4BG Sony memory card last year from Hong Kong, delivered to
my door in Ireland, for about half what it would cost in my local Sony
shop. That's a no brainer.

That really a commodity purchase, and if there is a big savings, I buy some
things online. However, for general merchandise, my time and mental well being
are important to me... I hate lines. Also, the last time I bought a suit (some
of you guys will remember what that is... pants and a jacket that match) I
chose one at a shop where they altered it to fit properly, rather than picking
one off the rack and expecting all the pieces to fit right. Yeah, I don't
think they sell those at WalMart.

Speaking of WalMart, have any of you ever bought or watched people buying shoes
at the store - grabbing them off the shelf, sticking their grungy feet in and
putting them back. Sure Florsheims cost a little more, but you get a better
shoe and they are clean.

One more thing, before you jump on me for being too elitist, I bought my work
boots at WalMart - and hated every minute of the process. ;-)

 On the wallmart kick
Years ago a couple of large supermarkets took over from small shops. Tescos
is one and the USA is about to get some. Sainsburies the other. These 2 got
rid of many small shops that could not compete with the buying power. Then
Wallmart took over ASDA and Tesco had the cheek to moan about large
businesses screwing their share up. Pot and Kettle indeed

Exactly. It is just change. Change always has winners and losers. And
don't forget: *we* are to blame or credit depending on your
perspective. Information systems like those we design replaced much
of the work that used to be done by clerks. Is it better that you can
browse a book, even read a sample on Amazon than have a knowledgeable
book store clerk recommend one for you? Some people yes, some 'no.

A personal example: A small business client of mine had 4 clerical
employees when I started designing systems for him. Most recently, he
runs the business with 1. Each time I automated one more task, he was
able to have one less employee. He didn't fire them, BTW. Some
retired, some left for their own reasons. No matter, if not for me,
he would have employed 3 more. Oh, and he would have gone out of
business a few years earlier. Is this good or bad? My answer is no,
it is just change.

2007-12-19 Thread Bill Arnold

I dont get that reasoning. How can shops survive if people
just use them to look and then go home and buy of the
 internet ? Allen

They don't survive as is, but they can morph into other things. As more
and commodity buying happens over the Internet, there's more room for
invention with enterprises that aren't commodity based. Consider just
the possibilities with entertainment and education, not to mention that
distributed manufacturing is still happening somewhere, and that could
be right in our own countries if tariffs and taxes are handled right (a
*gradual* move in the direction of a free world-economy), and that would
boost prosperity in rural areas and gives people who want to live in the
country the chance to.

Why don't we have parks all over the place - within distance that we can
walk to? Why no amphitheatres, so ubiquitous in ancient Greece, but
completely unavailable to us now? What happened to casual
meeting/milling places?

Why can't some re-born commodities businesses big on building and
maintain a park in your part of town? What about an amphitheatre
company instead of a furniture store? If it takes an acre instead of a
small building, that's good - use up that space provided by people
moving into the country :)

Note that by replying, I'm not condoning this completely [OT] thread
being on ProfoxTech. g

I try to buy locally from independent stores (mom and pop) whereever
possible. This keeps the small town charm alive and puts real money into
the pockets of real people that need it to stay alive. It also keeps
sales tax revenue in my locality, and these days it is sales tax that
keeps the fire department, police department, and other crucial city and
county services running.

There's a certain threshold though beyond which I won't go with the
local specialty stores, and that is usually when it comes to
special-ordering something from a manufacturer than the retailer doesn't
usually deal with.

From there, I'll drive 20 minutes to the 'big-box' stores or order it
online. But I stay away from the mega online retailers wherever
possible. I buy books from Powell's in Portland OR instead of Amazon,
for instance. Music I either buy directly from the individual band or I
drive to Santa Cruz to Streetlight Records, an independent store.

I avoid Walmart at all costs, and actively try to persuade people to
cease shopping there. I do buy things at the local Target and Ace
Hardware, as they pay decently well, support local nonprofits, and the
sales tax revenue goes to my city's coffers.

Just my 2 pennies. Now, let's get back on topic!

In some cases, yes.

I patronized a local computer bookstore for years, despite cheaper
prices available online. The staff were knowledgeable and helpful.
There was always a fresh pot of coffee in the back. There was a great
chance to browse and heft and read a chapter of two before deciding on
a book, or come across a book you might not have given a second
glance. Good publishers maintained buy 5, get the sixth free, punch
your ticket promotions and such. The occasional O'Reilly Hurts
sales with slightly damaged books at 40-75% cover prices was very
popular. Even when I moved 80 miles away, we made the trek every
couple of months and never got out with less than $150 worth of books
(It didn't hurt there was an awesome Thai restaurant in the next
block!). Alas, my every-four-fortnights trips weren't enought to keep
the store open. They've closed. I valued their service; obviously, not
enough others did. (It's also that most answers can be found online
with a search engine, and perhaps the era of print technical books for
ephemeral products is waning, too, another discussion topic.)

I patronize the local town pet food and grain store, rather than the
BigBoxPetStore I pass by on my way to grocery-shopping. My local
merchant knows my dogs by first name, is a handy reference for pet
first aid, has good recommendations on pet sitters and which kennels
to avoid. Paying a premium price for good service makes sense. Petco
has to have eaten away at her profits, but the convenience of a local
and knowledgeable vendor compensates somewhat.

Brick-and-mortar brings little value to computer hardware unless it is
backed up by other services that are of value for the consumer. Most
consumer-grade computers are filled with junk and made cheaper than
the business-grade parts we'd most likely prefer. For myself, I buy
online. For my clients, I line them up with a local shop that knows
how to build and service their hardware, is available or on-call,
because that's the value to them: they want Bob to show up on-site and
fix things today or tomorrow, not to call some BigBoxWebSite and get
clueless tech support or a high school enthusiast who doesn't
understand the importance of computers to a business. But it depends
on the customer and their definition of 'value.'
