Re: control surfaces

2018-12-09 Thread Steve Martin
As Ricky pointed out, any of the avid controllers are gonna be your best bet.
Anything not made by Avid or an Avid owned company is gonna be using HUI
protocol and that is limiting compared to Avid control Surfaces. If you can’t
afford an Avid surface the PreSonus FaderPort 8 or 16 are probably your best
bet. There should be some documentation on the FaderPort or some of the Avid
surfaces in the PT Access DropBox.

If they are going to pay for it only get that that works with Protools an Avid
product. made specifically by avid for Protools everything else runs on Huey.
That will be your way to get services to pay for the best thing and they always
take a shortcut. You can be truthful and make the decision to get the proper
thing not just something to get you by. do your research and provide them with
the proper documentation stating that Avid does not support Huey much anymore.

Re: control surfaces

2018-12-07 Thread Katie Zodrow
Hi, Steve and list members.
I guess I’m not the only person looking at control surfaces. :-)

I recently got approved for DOR services again in California to purchase a
ProTools system. I am still working at Audio Eyes and will be doing audio
production work from home or at the studio editing and mixing voiceover tracks
for audio description projects. I was also wondering if people besides Slau
and/or Sean have used the Avid S3 with ProTools? Is this accessible with
Voiceover? I was also interested in the ProTools Doc since this has a scrub
wheel. I have not looked at either of these surfaces or the Fader Port series
before. Has anyone used the Doc with ProTools? How accessible is it with
Voiceover? I know this has a touch screen like the S3 so I wasn’t sure if both
of these could work. I remember Sean mentioned using an iPad is not required
for the Doc so that’s fine. What is accessible with the S3 and the Doc and what
isn’t? How accessible is the Fader Port 8 or 16 surfaces with ProTools?
Thanks.

Hi, list members, this is what I got from listening to the video. if you have
a Mackie pro and you also have an extender, then you will be able to take
advantage of what he is doing. I also listemed to the comparison of the artist
and the 16 channel. What I gather is that you can have up to 4 of the artist
control surfaces and get a lot of work done. you can have 2 of the artist
control surfaces for $2000.

Hey Thanks ricky for sending. How do you find it for working with plugging.
would it be easier to update the surface, or do you find it works fine.

Re: control surfaces

2018-11-25 Thread Ricky Prevatte
Yes I do the rotators for my plug-ins. Unfortunately I am a sporadic Protools
user and this is a bit tricky but there are some videos on YouTube that tell
Howe to do this. I will try to put together something and do a little
demonstration. It does increase the workflow when I am doing this on a regular
basis and it is a very useful and doable thing. I would not buy anything else
for Protools running in Huey emulation. The encoders wrap but with Flotools
informing what you are doing this is very informational and easy to do to
make parameter changes.

Re: control surfaces

2014-03-20 Thread Slau Halatyn
Hi John,

Check to see if it uses the HUI protocol which Pro Tools uses to connect with
many control surfaces. If so, there's a good chance it'll work but, as always,
checking with the manufacturer is perhaps the best way to confirm whether it'll
be recognized.

Keep us posted,

Re: control surfaces

2014-03-20 Thread mcdiemert .
I own both the fader port, and the alpha track. While you can't buy
the alpha track new any more, I just picked up a second one on ebay
the other day for 69 bucks. I prefer the alpha track as the endless
roteries let me adjust the plug in setting of plugs including the
waves bundle. Also, with some training, you can use the ribin to scrub
through a track and set punch in and punch out points to establish and
edit, or a fade be it in out, or cross fade. If you have any
questions, I'll certainly try to assist.

Hi Brian,

Well, I think it would be safe to assume that the plug-ins are being
accessed through Pro Tools which would make them almost totally accessible.
If they've managed to make it somehow proprietary, hmm. I'd be really
surprised. I think it's going to be the former. In other words, here's a
control surface/interface and here are some plug-ins that go along with it,
not unlike the Universal Audio cards.

 Hello

So from what I gather people on this list either have a 003 or a c24 or
both? If anyone else has a surface they are using can you please write
about it a little. I am trying to decide on one but I'm not sure what to
get. I am still up in the air over weather or not to get an analog console.
I think having saved state of all parameters is winning me over to not
having a real analog desk but I still have yet to try working with a
surface. After working with pro tools for a few weeks I have been able to
make okay mixes just from the qwerty board but it takes quite a bit of time.
How easy is it to pop back and forth between plugins on different tracks and
not get lost remember which track and plugin your tweaking? Can you easily
hit a series of key strokes to control a plugin that was already the active
one? I want to find ways to minimize Alex speaking to me. I find it really
disrupting hearing speech while trying to listen to audio.

 Thanks for your help.

Hi Brian,

Well, I think it would be safe to assume that the plug-ins are being
accessed through Pro Tools which would make them almost totally
accessible.

If they've managed to make it somehow proprietary, hmm. I'd be really
surprised. I think it's going to be the former. In other words, here's a
control surface/interface and here are some plug-ins that go along with
it,

not unlike the Universal Audio cards.

Well, I'm not sure how it is with the 003 but, with the Control|24 and, I'm

hit the fader flip mode, simply pressing any other track's dedicated EQ
button automatically brings up that track's EQ settings. The same holds true
for compressor or dynamics plug-ins. It's pretty quick. That efficiency comes
at a high price, of course. I think the current C24 sells for around $8,000
or so. For an audio professional, it's absolutely worth every penny but for
someone just trying to record themselves, hardly worth it, given how much
other critical gear can be had for that sum.

Well I am looking to do this full time. Every dollar that's spent on
streamlining my workflow and speeding up sessions will be more clients I can
please. I really think that efficiency is key for us being competitive in this
market.

Any idea of how the mic pres are in the c24? The specs are okay. They only
give 51 db of gain. Won't be plugging any ribbons in to that.

Re: control surfaces

2010-11-25 Thread Slau Halatyn
For the original Focusrite Control|24, the preamps are nice. They're apparently
a cut above the Platinum. They're not bad for ribbons as they're fairly quiet.
That said, I don't know about the current c24. There's talk that they're made
in China but, frankly, even Focusrite had been manufacturing in China for
years. Don't let the names fool you, Companies that were once high-end like
Focusrite and SSL have discovered that there's a whole market of
semi-professionals who hear the name and drool. Of course, as the large studios
are closing and there's less opportunity to sell a five hundred thousand dollar
console, they'd rather sell ten fifty thousand dollar consoles or, even better,
one hundred five thousand dollar surfaces. Yea,for bigger markets, eh?

All that aside, I'd bet the preamps in the C24 are really good. Let's face it,
the pres on even the 002 weren't bad. They weren't great but they weren't bad
either.

Hey bryan,

I'm using a MacBook Pro 2008 model which does have the Express 34 slot.
Currently, the only MacBook Pro model that has the expansion slot is the
17-inch MBP. The Magma chassis works fine with that model. Digidesign never
supported this setup but it works flawlessly. I've recorded orchestral sessions
even on an old PowerBook with the Magma chassis. It's a fantastic portable

It is important to be aware, if you choose LE, and consequently to work with
Avid/Digi interfaces, then you won't have the best results if you also use

Avid/Digi interfaces. If you're going exclusively Pro Tools, then it won't
