Do modern computer users do any programming any more ?

Or is it all web pages, video clips and MP3 downloads ... ?

Given that the computer has pretty much become an appliance (sold along
side TV, Washers, etc), I'm sure most computer users treat it that way.
The same way that most of us treat our cars, ie. just a way to get around.
I'm sure the early horseless carraige hobbyists were not too happy when
the car gained mass appeal.

Indeed ... the way of the world.

Even my Pee Cee is more reliable than the Washing Machine!! JG

The power computers that we have now we the 'stuff of dreams' when the QL
was launched. And they have become just another domestic appliance ...
:-)

Marvin, the paranoid android said something like ... a brain the size of
planet and all they ask me to do is to park cars .

I'm sure that those that want to program, do. And those that don't,
don't.

Well, at least that is where the QL at 21 is still OK ... it is still fun
to program, and people even know how.

Well, Some of them do!! JG

This thread seems to have had more impact on the false programming
presentation than the QL is 21 Event. I expected the dinner booking form to
be full by now. Come on chaps

It really does need to be fixed to stop clashes in shows. Last year I

Is that what I typed! Of course it was worng.

I have already spent numerous hours tinkering and getting nowhere. Any

Your QL1 statement is confusing. You imply the mdvs work without flp,
but don't say. I'm not saying they are faulty!

Sorry Tony, that is a bit vague. What I am saying is that on QL1 nothing
works with the MC68008 removed unless I add the SGC then, with or without
the floppies plugged into the SGC, the MDVs dont work. Could it be that the
SGC is stopping the MDVs working? Should I remove the SGC and replace the
MC68008 and then try the MDVs again? I could suggest many options but
thought that someone may be able to suggest a solution from previous
experience or more knowledge of the hardware than I have before I give up in
disgust!!

Those who suggested a serial lead link from blackbox to PC direct or to
another blackbox - sounds great but where do I get the info on the link
cable, plugs, pinouts etc and do I need to write some software to control it
all? I once had two QL Aurora/SGC/QuBide rigs connected together via the
network sockets with a twisted pair (that's the cable - not my wife and I
!!) and although it was very slow, the results were positive. Is this the
way to go?

Once again, I plead for help. Now where are my back copies of QLToday? -
thanks for the comments Dilwyn.

Also describe completely what happens with mdvs on -all- machines.
ie do they spin at all, and does the spinning sound smooth.
It is all a bit vague.

On all machines, the MDVs spin, the LEDs glow and with some cartridges they
sound smoother than with other cartridges.(the smoother sounding ones
produce the quickest and most consistent results.) None of the rollers
appear to be higher up the spindle than any others. I have even tried
plugging one or two extra ZX Mdvs into the expansion slot on the RH end of
the QL - under the reset button - and although they seem to respond as MDV3_
and MDV4_ in that the spindles run by the sound of things but like the
original MDVs they dont produce any output in terms of DIR, WSTAT, FORMAT
etc.

BTW often the roller on mdvs rides up and touches the case top.

 Tony

I have always been very lucky with my QLs - plug in and get immediate
success - so I haven't had the learning curve provided to those who had
constant problems and had to find a way round them. Now I seem to be getting
it all at once.

 I only get 2GB with QPC2: FORMAT win8_4000 fails while win8_2000 doesnt.
Even then the file allocation block is a massive 32k. It seems to me that
4GB must be the theoretical limit for the current mapping scheme. The
minimum space taken by a file on disk would then be a whopping 64k

 Per

Per is right, IIRC QLWA may have a 2G limit, even though 4G would be the
 theoretical maximum.
There are two possible reasons for it:
 1) Maximum number of allocation blocks (think of them as a sort of
super-sector) is a 16 bit word, unfortunately, some implementations and
versions took it a s a signed integer instead of unsigned.
 2) Maximum size of one allocation block is a 16 bit word, again some
implementations and versions used signed arithmetic to point to a byte
within the block, which reduces it's maximum size to 32k.
IIRC the first error is the more likely to crop up. When QUBIDE was being
maintained, these cropped up, but I do not remember the speciffics any
 more.
4G is a sort of double limit as the system implies that the whole QLWA
partition can be used up by a single file. Since the file pointer is a 32
bit unsigned (hopefully!) integer, the maximum size of a file is 4G, and
so
is the size of the partition (64k blocks each 64k in size = 4G).
The serious limitiation here is that one file always takes up at least 1
allocation block (even if the file is empty!) and the less serious one is
that there can be max 64k files. The first is quite restrictive in QL
terms
as files are, in general, much shorter than 64k. This produces a lot of
 wasted space.
If you want to be absolutely sure, 1G QXL.WIN, with 32k allocation block
size is the way to go, it avoids all the possible pitfalls...

 Nasta

Thanks for the advice, Nasta, and all explained so that I can follow the
reasoning. I will do a bit of experimenting but the comments received as to
what should be theoretically achievable is a great help.

Much to my annoyance, some of my 21 year old microdrives (it's actually
their 21st birthday this month!) have begun to bite the dust. Or, rather,
bite the foam: The little foam pad behind the tape is starting to
 disintegrate.

Does anyone have a stack of dead cartridges (snapped/jammed/crinkled tape,
just simply won't format, whatever) that they'd like to get shot of, so I
can spend hour after happy our prising the little copper widget + foam pad
out to renew my dying cartridges? I can collect from South Essex, or will
pay postage, or swap interesting stuff (if I have any).

I'm particularly hoping to resurrect my original black-label Quill 2.00
cart. Fortunately, the only one I've actually ruined is a silver-label
Easel
cart, which gummed up proper style when the foam let go (this is how I
 discovered the problem).

 Thanks in advance!
 Ade.

Actually, I don't know what the maximum size is. I do know that QPC's
access routines are currently limited to 4GB per QXL.WIN file,
however. It would probably be fairly easy to extend this to 2TB, but
I'm not sure how much space the QLWA format itself can handle anyway.

I have (approximately) the following kit for anyone to have for free -
well, if you can collect (or pay postage) that is.

2 QLs (standard) - they are old (JS) and have the obligitory membrane
problems. Power supplies and cables are available. Not sure about the
network leads though - I can check.

1 QL with Gold Card fitted. As far as I remember, it is working ok.

1 pair 3.2 Mb drives plus 10 (I think) blank (never used) 3.2.Mb floppies.

1 pair 720 Kb drives (Or it could be 1.44 !). (At least, I think I have
these !)

1 Phillips (?) colour monitor with cable to work off a standard QL. Was
working when I put it in the loft. I think it's a VGA monitor so it might be
of use on a PC (granted, an old one !)

I think I might have some mdv cartridges as well - I'm not 100% sure.

I know I have DJToolkit on a ROM but I might also have other stuff on ROM
as well. I used to have Metacomco C, Pascal and the Assembler. As I say,
there's a lot of stuff in boxes

Hundreds of used and new floppy discs. Mostly an old copy of the Quanta
library before I was 'sacked' (in the nicest possible way) when there was a
massive re-organisation of the library. These will be re-formatted before I
send them out (or throw them out - but I'd rather recycle them as they are
mostly used once.)

There might be more stuff, but it's in a box and/or in the loft.

Reasons for 'sale' - I'm moving the office (for my day job) from one large
room to one small room - my wife wants to use the big room as a second
bedroom for some reason - so I need the space. These QLs have not been used
for about 5 years as I have QPC (on a stick) which is just so utterly
brilliant, I never need to fire up the trusty originals. Thanks Marcel.

If anyone wants this stuff and feels 'bad' about getting it for free, make

 At 15:40 19/05/2005 +0100, you wrote:

We will probably settle on buying the 128Mb sticks - they are now the
smallest we do, which only a handful of 64Mb ones remaining. I think a
70-80Mb QXL.WIN file or similar would be enough on these, and this would
leave ample room for other storage uses for the owner.

To be honest though, the fear I have is how many we'd sell. I would need
to
commit to buying at least 50, but more likely 100, to get decent pricing
on
the sticks. Typical price when available shouldn't exceed 15 pounds. Will
 we
 sell that many?

I was wrong then, I thought you were looking to introduce a new line.

Well, it's a new idea in QL terms, but USB sticks are about for years.

As to Sticks, quantity why ?

Primarily to make it worthwhile. Example - I spent MONTHS working on the
QL
DVD documentary project. Steve Reyal practically devoted his life to it in
the same period. We even bought a Mini DV camera - over 600 pounds at the
time - with the sole motive being the DVD. Steve (a professional
broadcasting editor and DVD author) designed slides shows, sampled music,
wrote scripts, and designed the menus for the whole thing. Even blank DVD
media was quite expensive at the time. Even doing rostrum camera work of a
QL turning for the menu sequences. How many did we sell? Errr.. About 6 of
them. Total financial disaster. So, I'm eager to avoid that again.

Secondly, if I buy 100, I can get them printed with a logo of our choice,
so
I could get them with a QUANTA logo on, on maybe Sinclair in the famous
block font. Makes the thing a touch more personal I think.

Surely the suite would best be moved as a Zipped collection for anyone to
unwind into any device they had available, so many have camera mem cards
 already.

No, this defeats the purpose. I can do this after the event for people who
want the data, but this idea came about as a way of trying to get at those
ex QLers who now have PC's on their desks. Most of these will have
forgotten
what ZIP is (if they ever knew) and would'nt want the hassle of finding
out.
If the idea is to work, it should be a matter of plugging in the USB
stick,
and clicking an icon - and a few seconds later you have a useable QL
screen
in front on you, with maybe a BOOT running displaying a menu of options,
and
 programs to run. Dead simple.

A separate question is if a memory stick is marketable at that price and
would it be worthwhile to engage in.

This is the big question. Of the people on this list for instance, how
many
 would buy one?

 Cheers,

 Darren.

Although I will buy 2, if you think the 15 pounds (~$30) price is accurate
then
I will pledge to buy 10 if you needed me to. If you can get several other
pledges then your risk will be reduced enough so you might give it a try.
It
will be a lot of work to bundle the software with a good interface but I
bet
there is enough of a market to consume 100 units over time. There could be
a
linux version too. Great Christmas presents to those wayward QLers we all
know.
Of course once a buyer has one he could easily make copies for the price
of the

[ql-users] Archive - ALTER command

2005-05-14 Thread John Gilpin
I seem to remember, a long time ago, using the Archive ALTER command with a
list of field names so that although you have (say) all the fields of a
database visible on the monitor screen, by putting only some of them into

listed.

I now cannot find any reference to the above in any Archive book or manual
and I can't remember the syntax for the list.

Can anyone out there help me please :-) or tell me I'm mistaken in the first

From: Just about everbody who monitors the user list

About 10 days or so ago, Darren Branagh asked a quite straight forward
question about the possibility of there being a market for a DVD containing
an emulator and heaps of QL Software with a purpose written front end etc.
This idea was extended to 32Mb and 64Mb USB Flash Drives with a similar
package. Since then this topic has become so distorted that it seems to me
now to have been downgraded to a general slanging match over who said what
in emails or what was the purpose of links in workshop flyers etc. After
over 140 emails bearing this subject heading, can we please get back to the
original topic? Carry on with the other one if you must, but is it getting
anywhere? And if so can someone change the subject line so that those of us
who are fed up of this exchange can ignore whatever there is still to come.
I for one am very interested in what Darren was suggesting and would be
willing to place any firm suggestions or business plan before the Quanta
Committee if financial support was needed.

Anyone else want to know what Darren has (had) in mind?

I touted this idea before in QUANTA, but got no feedback at all.

I, in my guise as Q-CELT, produce CD-ROMs for the QL. I was wondering if
there would be any demand (Hah!) for a DVD version - i.e. All of the
CD-ROMs
I produce would easily fit on one 4.7GB DVD-R.

It has got cheaper to buy DVD-R's, so the overall price would be quite
reasonable (a fraction of what it would cost to buy all the CD's
separately
 - probably about the same as one CD).

Anyone interested, or would I just be wasting my time?

Subject: Re: What happened to BACC

Following up on the thread about BACC.(British Association of Computer
 Clubs).

As far as I am aware - and if I am wrong, I'm sure someone will correct
me. - Quanta's original affiliation to BACC was mainly to be able to
purchase reasonably priced Public Liability Insurance for Quanta itself
and
 its Sub-groups. Quanta insured itself and nine sub-groups - I don't think
that it was ever documented which nine - for £2 Million indemnity at about
 £250 (year 2000 figures) { this works out at £25 per sub-group}. When I
took
over as treasurer, the bill for the first year had risen to £600 and I was
asked by committee to investigate the insurance market for cheaper
premiums.
I received various quotations and all of them were considerably higher
than
what we were paying. Some Insurance companies even refused to quote
stating
that they no longer offered public liability insurance on its own and
that
it would have to form part of a complete business insurance package. Other
companies would only accept proposals from each individual sub-group
direct
and at one point I was offered a minimum premium for any form of
insurance
of £1,500 per annum. As I learned from BACC that their insurers were
likely
to double their premiums for 2003 and that they (BACC) were having similar
responses to their own insurance investigation, I finally took out a
policy
with Co-operative Insurance Society (CIS) to cover Quanta for its
sponsored
events, committee meetings and AGM. Sub-groups were informed that Quanta
was
no longer able to provide PL cover for the sub-groups who should consider
the matter individually and make their own arrangements.

I understand from a recent email from BACC that this is similar to
difficulties that they are experiencing and that at this moment in time
BACC
is effectively dormant although there may be a revitalisation route
 following discussions with BCS.

I am sure that my contact at BACC will keep me informed and, of course, I
have wished BACC well in their fight to recovery who, like Quanta, are
suffering from a reduced level of membership.

I hope that this helps to answer the question.

 John Gilpin.

Here is my response to queries regarding the Quanta AGM, Proxy votes and
 Special Resolutions etc.

The Proxy form clearly states that any Quanta member who is unable to
attend
the AGM is permitted to vote by proxy. By default, these votes will be
given
to the chairman of the meeting although the member has the option of
choosing someone else (another member) by deleting the Chairman and
inserting someone else's full name and address in the space provided. If
your vote is decided beforehand then you should indicate your choice by
ticking the relevant boxes OR you can appoint your proxy voter to vote in
whatever way he/she feels fit at the time. Time is now running very short
for you to effectively use your vote. I am sure that the Secretary (John
Southern) will be only too pleased to help you register your vote for the
 AGM.

 Special Resolution Number 1.

Cutting out the wording regarding how the various paragraphs will be
renumbered, this resolution boils down to in order to improve the balance
between continuity and refreshment of the Quanta committee it is suggested
that no member shall serve on the committee for more than six years
without
standing down for one year before seeking re-appointment.

This means that the committee member has the time to reflect on whether
he/she wishes to continue on the committee and also offers the committee
position to another member who would like to offer their services.(without
actively challenging the current committee member for his place on the
 committee.)

The rest of the resolution covers any situations to avoid all the
committee
members standing down at the same time and to decide who's turn it is to
stand down at any given point in time.

 Special resolution Number 2.

Since Quanta is aware that it is very expensive to run a large committee
whose members live mainly throughout the UK, it has been noted that the
current constitution states that a quorum of four persons must be present
at
any committee meeting. This is getting difficult to arrange - with a
committee size reduced to six members and this resolution provides for a
varying quorum. It proposes a minimum of two members or one half of the
number of committee members (whichever is the greater) and the
constitution
already states that one of those attending should be an officer (Chairman,
 Secretary or Treasurer).

Availability of Current copies of the Constitution:

When the Constitution is changed, it is updated on the Library Guide
(LibGuide - disk LG01) as a series of Quill document pages and
notification
of such a change is noted in the next available Quanta Magazine. This
Library disk - like other disks - is available either from the librarian
in
the usual way or by purchasing the library CD - available from the
librarian
or at most Quanta Sponsored Workshops.(Price £10.00 inc Post and Pkg.) The
library CD is updated every year in time for the AGM.

If anyone has any further questions regarding the AGM etc. please ask.

 Regards,

 John Gilpin.
 Quanta Treasurer.

I am still, however, very intrigued that the QUANTA limited edition
  states
that there is a Quanta copyright and not that it was reprinted under
  licence

If you look in any technical book you will find that the publisher has
accepted the responsibility for maintaining the copyright.
This appears to be standard practice and the Quanta publication was no
 exception.

 John Taylor

JG

I would have to bow to someone with far greater knowledge than I have with
regards to copyright and licences. I wasn't even a Quanta member at the
time; however intriguing you find the situation. I have merely quoted from
the copies that I either own or am holding on behalf of Quanta for resale in
an effort to shed some light on the situation.

However, as current demand (nil) is far less than availability - from
various sources -does the question really require further comment?

Now, should this situation reverse itself (demand greater than supply) and
you know of the whereabouts of some past documentation on the topic, we
would all be please to hear about it.

his phone number from those QL adverts - he used to sell software I'd

I remember his excitement when I told him that George Gwilt had made the

was VERY interested in. Most people think of David as a trader, but he used
to write software too, Touch Typist for example. He now does various things

Although David is not actively QLing, he said he has been known to dip his

how, perhaps via my website) to know when QL shows occur in his area - he
occasionally visits the Manchester Quanta workshops for example.

We tried to establish contact with Freddy some time ago, including a

The total is not very heavy. I would be willing to pack it all and send it

collector of such items and my address is inside the front cover of the

Why it says Copyright 1989 Quanta I don't know, in fact all the
reprints were dated 1989 as no one amended it.
The fact remains, copyright is with Jan Jones. If Quanta had bought
the copyright there would have been no need to make repeated payments
 to Jan Jones.
In any case I feel this argument is pointless as there are second hand
copies available. Rich has got three and doubtless there are many more
 that could be made available.
Quanta has one copy left and, if I remember rightly, has not sold one
in the last five years. How many requests have we had?

JG
A late response due to spending Christmas and New Year abroad.

I am inclined to accept John Taylor's views on Copyright as he was probably
involved with the original agreement with Jan, whereas I have had no need to
check the agreement during the last three years.

The copy that Quanta currently holds is a second-hand copy recently donated
with some other stuff. The one new copy which I inherited was sold soon
after I became Treasurer and since then numerous second hand copies have
been received and sold on either by myself at workshops or by Rich Mellor
(on behalf of Quanta). There is still a market for this book but it looks as
though it can be supplied from donations of no longer required items. Quanta
is always willing to accept such no longer required items for resale to
QLers who need them. Some £1,000 has been credited to Quanta's bank account
from such receipts during the last three years. Rich Mellor is kept updated
of the items that Quanta has for resale so that he can offer such items
along with those that he holds at his own depot.

  You are wrong.
Quanta does not own the copyright to the Jan Jones book and never has.
The agreement was that Quanta had permission to print additional
copies in return for a royalty based on the number printed and not on
  the number sold.
Any other form of publication would require a new agreement. It was
also stipulated that no correspondence as to the books contents, syntax
or understanding was to be considered, neither was the whereabouts or
contact details to be divulged to any person who might want to make use
  of them.

This is the second time in as many weeks that you have guessed
incorrectly and then stated it as fact.

I do not wish to discourage the committee from doing a further reprint
but as sales would be limited you ought to show a far better
understanding of what you are proposing.

If it is of any help, the last reprint Quanta did of the Jan Jones was
photo copied and ring bound for less than £7.00, with little or no
profit to Quanta as a later committee reduced the selling price.

A far better approach would be for Quanta to reprint copies of Rich
Mellors manual which includes far more and is readily available as I
believe Rich, or the printer, still has the files.

at the foot of that page there is a Copyright Notice

As of December 1987 all rights in this book reverted to Jan Jones. No

The real problem for Nasta is such a simple one. He has a complete
design
ready to go - he just needs the time and resources to follow it through.
Some of us have sourced and are holding components for his projects but
without a couple of months away from yucky jobs, and the resources to
get
everything made to a suitable standard, it won't happen.

I disagree in parts. One of Nasta's problems is that he seems to be a
hardware man
only (sorry to discuss you as if you weren't there, Nasta). Let me hasten
to add that I
have met him only once briefly at QL 2004 and found him extremeny likable.

Nasta gave a very interesting (and witty) talk about two projects, one of
which could
be seen as being not that far from completion, and he seems to be driving
it forward
 technically very nicely.

What, IMHO, Nasta doesn't seem to realise is that it is also up to him to
drive the
project forward financially - no one else is going to do that for him.

Why doesn't he say (for example here on this list) I need so much money
and if I
 have that, I'll build (whatever - a prototype, a working version ..)
within so many
 months.

There have alreay been people on this list who have stated that they would
support
 new projects financially...

For me, the misfortune of Nasta's work is that the resources aren't
there
to do something TRULY revolutionary. I have these quaint ideas of
miniATX
motherboards using standard everything and a pair of 68060s - all this
is
  possible if it's funded.

 To what tune?

Maybe [Quanta] misinterpret the rules and think that benefit means do
business with - they can do business with any QLer...

But they do have to make sure that the projects they finance are
financially sound and
of benefit to many of their members (and NOT the QL community in general.
If we
want Quanta to be of benefit to the QL community in general, we must all
become
members). What if many of the Quanta members are still sticking to their
original QLs

Now you're talking guys. How many membership forms do you want? New members
(or old ones returning) are always welcome to Quanta!!

John Gilpin. (Membership Secretary)

and don't plan to upgrade? Shoudl Quanta really finance something they
don't want?

This reminds me of a problem we had in QLCF, the (now defunct) french QL
users
club. We, too, had a bit of money on the side. During an AGM it was
proposed that we
use some of this money to fund development of SMSQ/E for the QXL. IIRC
this wasn't
even voted on because the consenus of those who were present was that this
was
something worthwhile to put our money in. So a (modest) amount was given
to TT
towards that development - in return, we were allowed to distribute that
version aongst
our members - not all of whom (far from it) even had a QXL. Some bought
one
 because of it, though.

But we already had done something like that earlier - for example, we had
bought a
licence for QPAC II for all of our mermbers (and I think QD, too). QLCF
was
responsible for translating duplicating the manuals etc, copying the
disks and
distributing them, a work which was undertaken for free by a member.

At the time, I felt that this was a good way to act for us, because
1 - Our members got good software
2 - Traders and authors got money
3 - Secretly I hoped this would be a beneficial spiral, since some members
would buy
new hardware to run the new software on, tus financing the QL world even
further.

The problem is that you can't really do that with hardware, which, for
each item sold

OK, I have now had the chance to digest the wealth of emails on this
 subject.

What we need is a definitive document which will set out the bare bones of
 how this system will work.
I would be willing to put this together based on the earlier emails - if
you want to be part of the design process, then let me know and I will
forward the draft document for comments.

Once we have agreed on the specification, we then need to look for
 volunteers -

 1) Person to write a new PFF device driver (failry simple)
 2) Person to write the Printer THING
 3) Person(s) to write the filters

I would also suggest that this is put forward as a project to Quanta and
we ask them to finance the project - possibly a one off fee for
development costs (£250 split equally between the developers)?? If need
be, this could be done as a loan and the end product sold commercially
akin to the situation with the Qx0 where Quanta get a share of each sale
to repay the loan (not as if it would ever be repaid, unless we sold the
 program for £50 per copy).

Any comments on this?? Quanta comments would be also appreciated.

Even though I am an officer on the Quanta Committee, I too am leaning
towards spending some funds as distinct from lending the money. I see no
purpose in hoarding our member's subscriptions if they can be used to some
purpose to the benefit of those members. It is going to be difficult to
maintain our surplus of income over expenditure as last year as there are
not many expenses left that we can effectively reduce and our income falls
with the steady decline in membership. It could be worth trying something
different to see if we can attract new (or the return of old) members. I
also like the idea of a combined toolkit and software package which would
provide a basic level of support to our members. This could and possibly
should be supported by a series of article on basic stuff, like how does
level two configuration differ from level one and how does a novice identify
between files called congig1, config2 and Menu_config? (This is where I have
to admit my ignorance on some very basic stuff!!) How does one configure
FileInfo2? (is the programme which enables one to double click on a file and
set its basic programme running by virtue of its postscript ( the last bit
of the file name after the underscore.)) I personally would like a series of
articles written for the novice (a blow by blow account) on such things
instead of waiting for the next subgroup meeting and the listening to two or
three others with differing views as to how it ought to be done. Are there
still any novices out there, or am I the only one asking daft questions and
unable to retain the answers long enough to remember them say a year later?

Perhaps if something was explained to me in small doses that I could
understand, I could write from my own experiences an article for the
magazine from a novice's stand point and then a year or so later refer back
to it to refresh my own memory. Caution, am I letting myself in for
something?

Keep the ideas flowing. There WILL be a quanta committee meeting at Byfleet
next Sunday.

Sorry John, but my strong belief is that, if friends or associates are
involved, it is even more important to have a legal agreement when any
kind of business and/or financial activities are involved. Otherwise,
you are risking some very hard feelings if something is not understood
or goes wrong. Unfortunately I have my own personal experience with
this and know others who have also gone through some bad stuff.

I would hope that any business activity that Quanta undertakes has a
legal agreement of some type. Doesn't have to be over bearing or
bundled with a bunch of lawyers (after all, the idea is that we do
trust each other I would hope), but it does need to be there.

This also protects Quanta because, if there are any questions about how
something is done, there is a solid paper trail that at least shows the
 good intent behind the activities.

 Cheers,
 jim

I coundn't agree with you more Jim. I wasn't in office when the D D

My first reaction was to get up and walk out. If DD were to be
trusted, a simple statement, even a verbal one, would have been
  binding.
If they weren't to be trusted then we shouldn't have been dealing with
  them.
Finally it was agreed that DD would submit all invoices to me for
payment and I would instruct the Quanta Treasurer to make the required
  payments.
In return, when a sale had been completed they would send the money to
me and I would place such money in to the Quanta bank account.
I kept records and would have acted on these in the event of a dispute.
Trust was not always in evidence I am afraid, especially from Robin
Barker and John Mason. The rest of the committee merely acquiesced
  when requested by the Chairman.
If the financing of projects is to be conducted in this manner, then
they are dead in the water, for heavens sake, we are dealing with
people we have known for years.
Therein lies the problem. John Mason has never been active among the
Quanta members or the QL community beyond the traders, the Dorset sub
  group and the committee.
I have said it before. Attitudes are too deeply ingrained in the
current committee, it has become a little closed shop or mutual
  admiration society.
For a healthy active committee you have got to have conflict. The
members must believe in what they are doing even if the others
  disagree.

contacted by the correct Quanta membership secretary tonight : he (the

 A fair rebuke here.

I assume that John Gilpin is already in contact with people who via this

If there is anyone who still has a problem, could they please email me

Hmmm, reminds me too much of last night where I was trying to put WinXP
onto my PC after having its new hard disk fitted.

A couple of error messages came up which left me wondering whether to
laugh or cry. I mention these because they show how lucky we are as QLers in
some ways and how even seemingly simple suggestions like Tony's can drive
fear into my heart.

Your CD-ROM is not responding to the standard drivers, please insert the
drivers CD to install the manufacturer-supplied drivers. (or message to
that effect).

(Reminds of me of Keyboard failure, press F1 to continue.)

Err, OK, no CD drive to install the CD drivers. Fine. Its next suggestion
is get a driver fof the net. Of dear, no internet connections set up yet,
because no modem, which needs drivers...off a CD.

Newly installed WinXP. The modem needs drivers (this was a modem which
came with the PC from its manufacturer) from a CD but it is not at all clear
how to do this, because the drivers are buried deep in an obscure folder
level. The leaflet says refer to instructions on the CD which turns out to
be a PDF file. Where are the two places I can get a PDF file reader? Off a
CD, or off the net. Uhelp.

Wouldn't it be great if Roy sold us a Qubide with only instructions which
say you'll need a driver for this, there's probably one out there somewhere
but I'll leave you to sort it out how to get it and everything else, by the
way you need a PDF program to read your next issue of QUanta too.

In other words, leave PDF out of the QL equation please Tony!

 Dilwyn Jones

Still monitoring. I rather like the ideas which run thus:

1.Develop internet software for all common ql platforms - Black box,
(S)GC, Aurora, Qx0 etc.

2.Encourage Quanta members to use the software 1. above and to access
the user list, Web Site etc. Provide practical help with this for members
who need it - I'm sure I'm not the only one!!!

3.Develop the Web Site so that all Quanta services - Magazine, Software
Library, Help line, Back Issues, Advertisements etc. etc. can be accessed by
all members. - with up to date links to other websites related to QL.

It is the 21st Century. Can we drag ourselves out of the (early) middle
ages?

Now, it seems to me that the first step is to appoint a Web Master - any
offers?

The Quanta committee is down to its minimum number of members. As Geoff has
said on many occasions, we have the ideas but not the manpower to execute
them all. Is ANYBODY offering their help?

I didn't express it very well, but what I was getting at was that there
are so many different possible formats in between software and printer that
somewhere in the middle there has to be a common format, e.g. Postscript, so
that the only job is converting from this common format to the native
printer raster format.

Which leaves us with two choices:
  1. write drivers for every printer on the planet
  2. rely on Ghostscript drivers to do this, meaning we fed Ghostscript,
it does the printer driving.

Much as I hate the idea, option 2 seems to be the only realistic option
for the printer end of things in the future. We can do what we like with QL
software's drivers (i.e. whether the Postscript is produced by epsonps
feeding ghostscript or whatever).

  Back to:
  qlsoftware-epson output-epsonps-ghostscript-printer

or some such long winded solution.

But QL software doesn't write Postscript output now. I am saying to come
up with something easier as intermediate powerful language, which will
be easier for QL software to use. This is now difficult, basically
define an ASCII equivalent for the PROforma commands.

This will then give a system which to my opinion is more QL minded,
available to more QL users (I know PROforma requires a lot of memory
etc, but it is still a lot better than Ghostscript (or at least last
 time I looked).

PROforma is already in use on some people's system, so minimal extra
memory would be required. In PROforma you can choose which printers to
have (in Ghostscript there are compiled in the program - thus making it
either a limited set (less memory), or the system even bigger (large
set), or forcing people to recompile themselves (candidates)

The three layer system discussed between Wolfgang, Rich and Myself seems
to be a very viable way to handle things. All that is needed now is a
group of volunteers who can cooperate to make this a reality. Only then
 will we have made progress.

There was a proposal at the 2003 AGM for the magazine to be distributed by
email, but it was reported to the 2004 AGM this was not practical because
of
the large number of members who do not have internet access. I don't know
 how the research was done.

I think Brian Kemmett makes a good point about not creating a two tier
 membership.

As you know Tony sends out notices of shows by email. We also send out a
snailshot to QL-users (ie not necessarily Quanta members) for whom we do
not
have an email address. There were 73 such people in the Byfleet catchment
 area.

I did an analysis from the membership database mid 2003 only to find that at
least 50% of our members had not given an email address on their latest
renewal form. Those members who pay by Standing Order and therefore do not
fill in an annual renewal form should contact me direct if the want their
email address adding to their membership profile.

I have done as you suggested with some results:

LPRINTing Chr(0)+Chr(7) from Archive to my Mannesman Tally MT80+ printer
does produce a sound similar to that produced when the printer is out of
paper.

The machine code routine from Tony also produces a note from the 'Speaker'
but the duration is short and it is hard to hear as the speaker is mounted
inside a Pandora case. Also, when I tried to put the routine call into a
loop to get it to send a number of beeps of differing pitches(a tune?), the
QL locks up after about three loops! Is there some incompatibility between
it and SMSQ? I am using Archive from Xchange version 3.90L as obtained from
the Quanta Library. The installation of the code does work if added to the
starting TSL code in archive.

Any more bright suggestions from anyone or do I kick it into touch (oops off
