Hey
getting worse and worse ..
On the 3 toatsers I got here
2 fc5
1 centos 4.4

All three have the same issues, simscan never finsihes the scanning
either coz the mail is cut

or it gets cut in the process

I think it is a pretty serious issue
considering the same mail bcc cc reached the other smtp servers

I am not sure if the problem happends in the Server DATA
or when it is passed through simscan
but it is getting annoying

I cant tell exactly when this started but I d guess in the last 2 weeks
I am having complaints for a few days ...

Any1 beside Janno noticed that ?

Janno on a side note you didnt change anything when rebuilding simscan

If you are not running the latest release of qmail-toaster
(qmail-toaster-1.03-1.3.14), then these messages are possibly
being rejected for SPF or DomainKeys violations. You will only
see those entries logged in the latest release. This is
something that has had me stumped more than once in the past.

Nothing to be sorry for. I can see where a patch to integrate this could
be of use, but honestly this is the first time I've ever seen anyone to
ask to limit the subject I've never even seen spammers use this
method (yet).

Is this in response to one particular user or in general?

[qmailtoaster] Spam Question...

2007-03-20 Thread Kyle Quillen
Hey all,

Not sure that this is where I need to ask this but here goes. I have been
noticing that when someone sends an email to a forwarder address like
[EMAIL PROTECTED] it seems as though the forwarder ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) does
not get checked or run through spamassassin. Since the email then is
forwarded onto a local email address the server does not scan it either. Is
this the correct behavior of the way it should scan? I would assume you
would not want a forwarder being scanned that way you know that there is no
chance of emails being blocked or rejected.

Just a small observation that I wanted to try to get clarified.

We had a thread running on this a month or so ago, and I believe we

IIRC that had to do with the spambox filter not kicking in.

It appears to me that the toaster is scanning forwarded messages though.
There are X-Spam-* headers from my toaster in mail that that was received
and forwarded locally intra-domain. They appear to be scanned when coming
into the forwarded account, but I'm not certain:

Enable the spambox function
(http://wiki.qmailtoaster.com/index.php/FAQs#I_upgraded_my_QmailToaster_to_the_latest_and_I_no_longer_have_the_.22Spam_Detection.22_box_in_Qmailadmin.)
and then run a script like Erik's prune script
(http://devel.qmailtoaster.com/info/qtprune.sh). You'll of course want
to edit it - his deletes mails after 28 or 30 days (don't remember which).

[qmailtoaster] simscan and lost emails

2007-03-20 Thread Philip

I ve been checking with the simscan mailing list and debugging a few things

simscan is definatly the problem

I did a few tests :

simscan 1.3.1 latest toatse version

export QMAILQUEUE=/var/qmail/bin/simscan; export SIMSCAN_DEBUG=2; export
NOPOFCHECK=1; /var/qmail/bin/qmail-inject [EMAIL PROTECTED]  test2.txt
qmail-inject: fatal: qq crashed (#4.3.0)

Nice? :) ... could any1 confirm he has the same problem ? test2.txt is
just a stupid text file

simscan 1.2 compiled with same options as qt (+ patch for clamav db path)

export QMAILQUEUE=/home/rainbow/simscan-1.2/simscan; export SIMSCAN_DEBUG=2;
export NOPOFCHECK=1; /var/qmail/bin/qmail-inject [EMAIL PROTECTED] test2.txt

pasting what is important ..
simscan: cdb looking up
simscan: cdb for found
clam=yes,spam=yes,spam_hits=6.5,attach=.mp3:.src:.bat:.pif
simscan: pelookup clam = yes
simscan: pelookup spam = yes

simscan: pelookup attach = .mp3:.src:.bat:.pif
simscan: attachment flag attach = .mp3:.src:.bat:.pif
simscan: .mp3 is attachment number 0
simscan: .src is attachment number 1
simscan: .bat is attachment number 2
simscan: .pif is attachment number 3
simscan: starting: work dir: /var/qmail/simscan/1174399705.933190.21786

Re: [qmailtoaster] Email Sending Failed... HELP!!

2007-03-20 Thread Jean-Paul van de Plasse
Just wondering..
Wasn't there a temporary error/problem at their side?
Seems one of their servers was refusing connections and the other one maybe had
problems also..

If you still can not mail to the customer I would try a telnet smtp session to
see what errors you are getting exactly..
Or use recordio and send a message again.

It appears to me that the toaster is scanning forwarded messages though.
There are X-Spam-* headers from my toaster in mail that that was received

into the forwarded account, but I'm not certain:

I have lots of forwards in use and I have not seen any issues about

something that isn't broken and run the risk of actually breaking it.
I do run a nightly backup, which gets rsync'ed to an offsite machine.
Just to be safe. My clients would be very unhappy if the server crashed
and I lost everything.
As for spam Welcome to the never-ending battle. Enable URIDNSBL

Other than that, check the drive space every once in a while. While
maybe not the best advice, it's what I'm offering.

If you are not running the latest release of qmail-toaster

being rejected for SPF or DomainKeys violations. You will only
see those entries logged in the latest release. This is

[qmailtoaster] Spamassassin/simscan 'soft' reject

2007-03-20 Thread Justice London
Is there a way to get simscan/spamassassin to do a soft reject of
messages, say under high load situations where spamassassin isn't
responding properly? I have found that when spamassassin either can't
accept a new connection, for whatever reason, that the client is passed
a 451 error right away. Is there a way to instead just have simscan
fail the spamassassin test and just pass the message un-checked?

The error 451 is a soft reject.

There are two types of rejects in smtp, 4xx are temporary rejections
and should be retried and 5xx are permanent rejections.

Not sure what else you are looking for.

Yeah, but it's better than just getting the message rejected, which
seems to be happening right now if something happens to spamassassin.
This is bad since our clients then call and complain to no end.

Re: [qmailtoaster] Spamassassin/simscan 'soft' reject

2007-03-20 Thread Justice London
I understand that it's a soft reject insofar as that is concerned. The
issue seems to come in when something has happened to spamassassin, be
it that it crashed, doesn't have room for connections at the time, etc.
At that point the 451 error basically becomes a show-stopper. The
clients could care less what is happening on the server level, all they
care is that they see an error-message. While I would guess it might be
possible to setup a rule so that SMTP authenticated clients will not be
processed by simscan, that still wouldn't change the fact that behind
the scenes spamassassin has broken in such a way that it seems things
can't be worked around. Maybe I'm incorrect in my diagnosis, etc.

If we reject with error 451, the sending smtp server should retry
later. If the sending smtp server generates a bounce, there is nothing
we can do about it.

Yo ES,

I'd take sorbs out of the blacklist. It routinely blocks Gmail,
hotmail and various others big sites. On the site they recommend that
sorbs be used in scoring via spamassassin and not outright rejection.

Just a thought.

propose as the correct behavior. Please clarify.

On a side note, have you switched your users to authenticated smtp?
This should skip all but clamav/attach checks. When I send an e-mail
from my client on port 587 using smtp-auth all I see is this:

Received: by simscan 1.3.1 ppid: 32696, pid: 32701, t: 0.3443s

From what I understand, only the ISP that you got the Dynamic IP can
give the reverse dns. Plus this is a dynamic IP so it may be difficult
to get the reverse dns. I do not think you will get it.

Now for the solution. If you are in the office where the dynamic IP is
used, use the smtp server of your ISP.

The simple way is just to configure your Thunderbird or any other email
client to the smtp server of your ISP.

The other way is to configure Qmail to send all outgoing emails to the
ISP's smtp server. I know it can be done but I do not know how.

If you are in Singapore, call me.

 P.V.Anthony

I'm on a dynamic (pseudo-static) IP address too. You'll need to have an
outgoing relay service to reach many servers, more and more due to
blocklisting of dynamic addresses (thanks in part to zen.spamhaus). I use
dyndns.org's mailhop service. It's quite affordable, and works really well.
You configure your toaster to send outgoing mail via dyndns.org's mailhop
relay using the /var/qmail/control/smtproutes file. You can do this
selectively by destination domain (what I still do), or just let mailhop
handle everything.

Alternatively, your ISP's smtp server might be used (some ISPs allow this,
some restrict use to their domain name). You can see if this works also by
adding an entry to /var/qmail/control/smtproutes to route outgoing email via
 your ISP's smtp server.

See http://wiki.qmailtoaster.com/index.php/Smtproutes for details on setting
up smtproutes.
