TO ALL TC SCS MEMBERS,

I remember it was last year or so when somebody out there told me about
GoodSearch.com. I don't remember the story anymore but it seems to me that I
checked with national on it and, whatever happened, it fell by the wayside.
Well now I've just heard about it again from Stephanie at our North
Carolina chapter. SCS is signed up on it and it is available to us as an
excellent source of fundraising.

Here's the deal. GoodSearch.com is a search engine that pays money back to
your designated charity every time you use it. So every time you do an
internet search for something, use GoodSearch instead of Google or Yahoo or
whatever. For every search you do they'll pay a penny or so to SCS. That may
not sound like much but it will add up, if we use it! THIS IS A NO-BRAINER
FOLKS!!! If you're looking stuff up on the internet you're using a search
engine so just use the one that will help us fund a cure.

It's simple to do. Go to _www.goodsearch.com_ (http://www.goodsearch.com/)
. You'll see the search box and then you'll see the box to choose your
charity. Type in Spinal Cord Society (open up your internet browser in another

window and do this with me now), check to see it's the Fergus Falls SCS
then click 'verify'. Now every time you go to GoodSearch, SCS will be preset
and all you have to do is start your searches to make us some money. There
is also an 'amount raised' button so you can see just how much money is
being raised. This money gets sent right to Fergus Falls.

You'll also see GoodShop.com right below that. Do your online shopping
from there and it'll do the same thing to make even more money. AGAIN, THIS IS
A NO-BRAINER! You can set GoodSearch as your home page, as a Favorite or
download their toolbar or just their search box. All you have to do is just
USE it.

But don't stop there. Forward this to everyone on your address list who
you think would be willing to help your cause out. We should be able to
quickly get hundreds of people using this and it won't cost them a cent. Why
wouldn't you, or they, want to do it? I don't care if you're searching for the
best way to pick your nose, we should be using the heck out of this. It'll
be easy enough to check with Fergus to make sure they're getting the
money.

If you don't want to do this, then all I can say is there is truly no hope
for us.

Mike

Re: [QUAD-L] 2 much bachoflen

2009-07-30 Thread wheelchair
My personal thing: At one time the max dosage was 100-120 mg per 24 hour
period because of the possible damage to the liver, in taking oral meds.
Using the pump requires a lot less medication because the bachoflen doesn't
pass thru the body system first. With the pump system, the meds go
directly to the leison. When I see 300mg, I have to wonder not only the
effects
on the spasm, but potential damage to other parts and organs in your body.
I can only speculate as I am not your doctor and I hope your doctor is
monitoring your meds and their process.

Everyone reacts differently, but I never experienced fatigue from

I still take quite a bit of medicine for spasms. Baclofen doesn't seem to

FW: [QUAD-L] Help! Suprapubic Cath keeps plugging

2009-07-30 Thread Merrill
For two months I have been going to ER 911 for uncontrollable AD in the
middle of the night. Sometimes my SP would be clogged with mucus and others
with sediment, both produced by UTI's. Even irrigation would not clear the
catheter. After three weeks on two antibiotics the problem appears
resokved.

Whether its a supra pubic or not sounds like you might need to irrigate and
flush out the sediment and mucus, but also might want to get some
antibiotics. You can flush with water and vinegar and do it till it comes
clean You should be irrigating whenever you start getting to much junk in
the tube, but at least couple times a week.. Or you might have some
infection thats why the stediment and mucus is clogging it.

2009-07-30 Thread Quadius
do you have anyone they can do an emergency catheter change? This is what
I'd do if I am unable to clear the catheter by irrigation. Also we try
kneading the catheter to see if we can get some of that mucus and grit to
move down the catheter. There are those occasions, however, when even this
doesn't work. The VA gave me a Tumie (spelling?) Syringe so I could have
someone try to break through the mucus. It's not always successful, but it
does work better than normal irrigation.

Just thought I'd pass on what worked for me when I was having a problem.
I'm glad your problems seem to have been eliminated.

2009-07-30 Thread Quadius
John definitely has a point about Michael Moore's documentaries. He could
have made even more phenomenal documentaries if he would've included more of
the negatives of each system. They all have some.
Just ask the English, Canadians, Germans, and anyone else. I know some
people won't agree with this, but the best health care system in the United
States is the VA. There are some points where it is extremely lacking,
especially in psychiatric care, but overall it does much better in polling
and health care outcomes.

The only thing I would add to your point is the for-profit insurance
companies are also a big reason why we don't have proper health care in this
country. It is in their best interest to pay off the politicians in order
to stymie any health care reform.

One thing I'm going to be complaining about if they don't have a
single-payer option is the actual naming of the bill. Will it be health
insurance reform or health care reform? That is the real question.

  Hi guys
I am from New-Brunswick, Canada and I have to admit that since my accident
in 2003, that left me Quadriplegic, I got to thank the health care system

on the street. Now, since I've seen the documentary by Michael Moore, Sicko,
I've realized how poor the health care system in United Sates was, I was
shock because one of the Richest country in the world can't even afford a
proper health care for their own people, that's really sad. The thing is,
the government don't give a damn, because they have the same attitude for
years, the rich gets richer and the poor gets poorer. Well, I got to admit
that I'm not American and it affects me big time to see that, specially in
2009 so the only advice I can tell is to Fight, Fight and continue to Fight
for your right because it is the people that needs care that are affected by
this not the healthy people working for the government with an annual income
of $80,000 a year. Well, I think I made my point, hehe, but I really hope
something good will result in all of this.

Please DON'T sign this petition. We NEED a single payer health care system.
I urge everyone to do their research and you will find that EVERY other
industrialized nation has single payer health care systems. I know people
who live in Canada and receive excellent health care. They pity us for
having such a poor and expensive health care system. Health care is a RIGHT
not a privilege. Our educational system from kindergarten through 12 grade
is free. Why not health care? The reason for all these scare tactics - no
control, rationing, etc. - is because the drug companies and the for profit
medical profession don't want to loose their HUGE profits.

I've taken 120mg daily (30mg 4x daily) orally for 21 years per SCI MDs
direction, though FDA advises 80mg daily as the maximum dosage. I've tried
cutting back slowly several times, but anything below even 100mg daily has my
legs spasming out of my shoes. 120mg works for me. 300mg daily sounds close to
lethal. I don't know how one functions at all at that dosage let alone being
sleepy.

I hope you can work things out, Veranda.

I'm a little shocked at the 300. I take 80 mg of baclofen a day, but that
is orally. The individuals I know who have a baclofen pump tell me it requires
quite a bit less than when they were taking the medicine orally.

Everyone reacts differently, but I never experienced fatigue from baclofen,
then again I wasn't taking it in the quantities you are. The highest I ever
went to was 160 mg a day.

I still take quite a bit of medicine for spasms. Baclofen doesn't seem to
be that effective for me, so I end up taking 75 mg of dantrolene a day and 5 mg
diazepam (Valium) a day. I managed to reduce my intake of diazepam
considerably over a 2 1/2 year period, but I have reached a plateau where
reducing my medication would cause too many spasms.

Definitely getting to see your doctor ASAP.
Good luck,
Q
