2010-03-11 Thread Veranda Escobar
I have had great results with pump. It is best thing could have ever happen to
me. But last year the incesion did reopen and I was rushed to hospital. I had
to replace it, but had to wait two wks. Then i had withdrawels it was awful. I
was very scared. But honestly only get it if you can't tolerate the oral stuff.

I am 16 1/2 years post injury at 3/4 complete and take baclofen three times a
day with pretty decent results! Another part of spasms is the lack of range of
motion and I do range of motions almost everyday and sometimes twice. Being 6
foot tall personal-care would be almost impossible without it and to keep
myself in my chair without finding somebody all of the time to put it back up a
limb or two. I have gone a few days without them and then takes another 3 to 4
days to get my muscles to relax once again. I think changing positions either
in bed or the chair can assist in cutting down the number of spasms. I have a
tilt system on my chair and alternating air mattress on my bed. This is what
works for me and like always we are all different in many little ways! Your

Hi everyone.

I haven't been on the quad-list for years but am back to get info
positive/negative from anyone who has/had a baclofen pump.  I'm 10 years post
after a run-in with a kangaroo, paralyzed at C5/6 and my spasms have gotten bad
enough that pills aren't working anymore.
Appreciate hearing from anyone, Rooby

I lived in an accessible, subsidized apartment for 15 years, in Tempe, AZ.  I
was within rolling distance of AZ State University, and I got my degree from
there.  I lived alone in the small apartment but had caregivers that came in
the morning and at night [and were a phone call away if I needed them during
the day.]  I also developed a network of friends that were willing to help me.

Once I got a degree and found a job I was able to purchase a townhome in Tempe,
and one of my friends became a live-in caregiver.  My caregiver gets paid by AZ
Long-Terms Care, which is under our state's Medicaid programs called Arizona
Health Care Cost Containment System [AHCCCS.]  We have a program here in AZ
called Freedom to Work which allows me to work full time and still receive my
Medicaid, while only paying a small premium (I pay $30/month.)  It's a great
program.

So, I have a live-in caregiver, my own accessible home, and everything works
out prety well.

I too take a daily antibiotic. I know most people say not to do it, but I was
getting UTI’s every other week. Plus the symptoms really were hard on me. I
would sweat and get fevers before the UTI was bas enough to show up on tests.
The Uro wanted to do a bladder augmentation, but thought we should try this
first as a last resort. Since starting the daily half dose, I have had 2 UTI’s
in 4 years.

Hi group,

I read some of the posts regarding the sweating problem. I too have had this
problem and ran a bunch of test. The doctors where pretty stumped. I think that
I have finally figured out that it's a UTI problem. When we sit up it puts more
pressure on the bladder which irritates the bladder when it's already upset
from the UTI. It causes pain and then we sweat. I take a daily antibiotic for
urine and have no more sweating. I may be wrong but it has helped me.

Good luck and great health,

I agree with this guy. I can also relate to the pain. My doctor explained to me
that there is no cure for nerve pain. That bacloflen and nerontin, stimulate a
different pat of your brain to kind cover up the pain. But have side effects,
fatigue, cognitive and memory laps or loss.

For me, I am in pain from the moment I wake up until I fall asleep. I have to
take Ambien to fall asleep, or like you I am up for days. What have for me that
helps is water and exercise. A bath and a Chiropractic  adjustment.  Honestly,
I need to work on the excersise part.

Hope this helps I know how hard it is to focus when your tired and in pain, I
will keep you in my prayers.

One thing you need to do is before you even upped your baclofen was to find out
why your getting the sweats n spasms, usually alot of times taking more
medicine hides whats really wrong.(the sweats n spasms or A.D. is usually our
body telling us something is wrong) I took myself off (slowly) but 60mg of
baclofen from 160mg the only reason I needed so much at the time was cause I
broke my leg. One thing about baclofen is it lowers your blood pressure and you
need to remember also its hard on the digestive system and liver. It will make
you very sleepy because its a type of relaxer. You need to talk w/ your doctor
and see if there's something wrong w/ your back you might have done something
to it and not realized it or maybe the way your laying in bed or could be your
bed, but just taking more medicine is not always a good idea, your just masking
the problem. Maybe try something else becoz thats alot of baclofen and sounds
like causing more problems.

Hopefully you don't mean 320 mg of Baclofen a day.   10mg twice a day was
about all I could take without falling asleep every time I sat still..  My
waking spasms have now settled down after 42 years of this crap.
Sleeping/lying spasms still bother me but the med-head bothers me too much
to kill them with drugs.  Just experiment to find the right balance for

[QUAD-L] Denied handsplints

2009-05-28 Thread Veranda Escobar
I have a question need some opinions on what to do. I was going to OT PT
all last year. In July I got sick and was in out of hospital after that.
There were a few times I had to call in and not attend therapies. When I was
there I was working with an OT to use electric handsplints that would open my
fingers up more and eventually I would be able to use my hands more since there
pretty much closed. Well the OT suggested I get these splints for my home. Well
I quit going to therapy because I could not commit to it once I was better
because I had to come back to work fulltime. He lent me the equipment for my
home until I could find out if a agency could pay for me to have my own. Well
the agency approved me to get splints. Now he is stating because I can't
committ to attending therapy he would like to hold off on me getting them so
basically he won't see me to get the splint fitted with the company. I know how
to use them somewhat.  The agency who
is purchasing them can only keep my case opener a little longer. My caseworker
said he had no right to deny me especially after he was the one who requested I
get them. She is trying to get ahold of him. These splints aren't cheap and I
could never afford them on my own. So what do you'll think I should do?

This is a question I am sure many of us in chairs have had once or twice. I
never thought I would until I became open to the idea that someone could and
would love and except me as I am. I've been with my hubby 10 years now. Is it
easy? Nope it can be very ruff at times because your partner has to be
accepeting and patient of many more things then usual. But I know many quads
who have found love out there. :) Good luck! And be sure to allow yourself to
be loved despite your circumstances.

Hi

My name is Hosni, I’m from Jordan, I am a C 4/5 quadriplegic since 2001, and I
am hoping somebody on this list will be able to help me.
I want to ask if a quadriplegic person can find love, because I think he will
find only sympathy and kindness.

I think personally starting off as an operator would be great. That's where I
started. I got use to being on phones and greeting people. I learned how to
hand things too people quicker by just working the front desk. I learned to
type faster and faster as time went by. Then I became that assistant. Now I do
alot of data entry working with contracts, punching holes, labeling them
preparing them to be filed. Could I do this 13 yrs ago nope I could hardly hold
a phone or even write. Now I have to say my hand writting is better than many
people I know who can write. I can grab the phones fatser than u can say boo.
lol But it all gets easier. I not only work I also volunteer here in the city
speaking to jr high high school students, parole officers, offenders about
abusive relationships. I try to stay busy. Yes I do have my down times when I
am sick, but being active makes me feel so much more independent. :) So good
luck!

Even though I have already read some of the experiences of some of you, reading
this particular entry again has given me even more inspiration to go out and
try to get something to do myself.

I have accomplished some things while I had been in my chair, but the last
three years have been relatively uneventful and I really need to get out into
my community more and try to get some sort of work -- whether it be
volunteering or working part time.

I managed to get a BA in history, but since I left the life of academia I have
felt such a void was really desires to be filled.  I'm considering doing some
freelance writing, but I really need to improve upon my ability to write
effectively.

I considered trying to get a job with the Social Security administration
answering telephones, but they have such strict security requirements in
regards to using telephone devices and being able to keep up with a certain
number of callers, that I don't think it's possible for me to do that type of
work.  I use a mouse stick and voice activation in order to operate the
computer.  Because I don't want to be tethered to my computer I tend to use
wireless software in order to use the voice activation.

Anyway, if any of you would like to give me some ideas on what I might do, I
would gladly accept them.  I really need a kick in my butt.

I have been a chair 15 years and yesterday was my anniversary for my job. I've
been here 13 years. I used to be a administrative assisitant to one of the
managers for 8 years and 4 years ago i tried for another job and got it. I work
for the state. I can not tell you that is so easy cause it's not. I've been
sick 9 months straight from being hospitalized from pump infection, sever
spasms, 3 uti's, stomach pain, gallbladder removal pressure points on feet.
My point is I have used all my vacation and sick time now i am on sick pool. I
have missed alot of work. I'm I worried of course. There is so many people who
need these jobs mine could be one just because i'm not here all the time. But i
could not imagine being at home not working. It gives me so much indpendence. I
love my job. So too answer question there are many jobs quads/paras could work
at.  There are 5 people who are in wheelchairs that work here not including the
deaf mail man, plus 3
amaputee's and the blind kitchen cook. I am a c6-c7 incomplete. I type with my
thumbs grab phones when needed and all my equipment is all electrici. I learned
to do stuff because i wanted to work. So good luck if your looking for a job. I
think many people could work just a learning process. One day I will have to
quit because of disability but wont be anytime soon. :)

This is as if I wrote it.  My diagnosis is that long term morphine use has
slowed my stomach activity causing terrible stomach pain.  Worst is within an
hour after lying down at night.  I can be fine in the chair until I lie down or
drink while lying down.  Anything except morphine water!  I know that in
approximately ½ hour after going to bed that my bladder is most active, the
first 4 hours is HORRABLE PAIN.  Pain might travel but is mostly in upper
abdomen.  Last month I went to hospital via 911 for dehydration an awful
burping when pain was present.  I searched in Google “morphine, stomach, and
pain”.  Might be something to this but I think something is going on.

Question??? Does anyone here have IBS or Gastritis? I was diagnosed with both
because have had serious adominal pain the last 3 months. The GI doc went in
and said stomach was doing fine, and of course said there was nothing wrong
with stomach. But did sayI had IBS Gastritis and that I would just kind of
learn to deal with stomach pain that comes along with it. Of course he put me
on a new med which seems to help. I just can't imagine that my stomach is going
to hurt like this from now on. I just want to know if anyone has this and if
this pain is forever. Sometimes I think these doc's just pawn the problem on
another doc. Cause right away he said for me to go to pain mgmt doc. As if i
want to be on darn pain meds that too me doesn't solve every  problem.

Hi Gang,

Well I'm sure everyone has spoke on this topic before, but I forgot. lol Anywho
my question is what have people used that has been the quickest way to make a
pressure point heal? I know being off it helps. Buttt I work a 40 hour
work week so staying off my butt is to hard. I don't know how I got it because
I'm always on the go. I think it was the fact I was in hospital three days I
had to bug nurses to just come turn me. I also have a pressure point on my
lower left heel of foot. I haven't had any pressure point in years. So does
anyone know which dressing for pressure points are better. Should I go see a
doc? Sorry if I sound so naive to situation, but I really don't get these.

Don't get me wrong.  I know you wish to sell it if you can.  Keep in mind that
most people who need this kind of equipment will have the government purchase
it new.  Used equipment carries no stated or implied warranty.  Used equipment
may require additional cost to upgrade it to its new user.
For this reason a Slightly used electric wheelchair that costs 5-10 grand for
its original owner, may only be worth a couple hundred dollars.  Plus the costs
of shipping.  Most people don't have the capital to buy into a risk and those
that do want new equipment.  Plus you will always have that one complainer
after the sale that will drive you crrazy with this doesn't work and that is
not what you said it would be.
That is why I originally advised Craig's List.

Best Wishes and Good Luck!

With what I described... they should have wanted to at the very least

I went around for about a month with my left lower leg very swollen and

Washington state had an article about spinal cord injuries and folks with MS.
A sentence said If one leg is significantly larger than the other... it could

The very next morning I called my primary care physician and I went to see him.
He looked at it and said I don't know... I don't think it could be a clot but
I will send you over to the hospital to have an ultrasound done. Needless to

and I was not any pain like before I thought it was because stone was out and
well I was too busy when dad was sick to even think of myself. After dad passed
in September started getting sick again then I thought must be because I'm
depressed not sleeping or eating right. Went to dr for a second opinion they
checked kidneys and there fine, no stones, but back still hurts in the middle
so bad. Ice at night helps a little, but not too much. Tummy hurts in middle in
between rib cage symptoms just like UTI. Maybe there two different things. But
does anyone have this problem? I just went to see a neurologist she running all
these bone spine test. I have been in chair 13 yrs. You'll helped me last
time when ppl were throwing stuff out there
what it might be and then I had to go to doctor say can you check for stones
(duh george). lol

  Anywho anything helps.

Re: [QUAD-L] makeup

2008-03-17 Thread Veranda Escobar
In the beginning I used a arm braces that just attached to hand and wrist it
was made me for me at rehab. I found it useful to use a sponge when apply
foundation. I did wear liguid foundation till I got tired of spilling it
start using compact foundation now I use a foundation brush no brace. I use
eyemake like mascara with longer handles eyeliners that can be twisted up
instead of sharpen. And as for the lipstick. Just put the lipstick conatiner in
mouth grapsing lid with teeth, grab two hands and pull the bottom out take lid
from teeth, put lipstick without lid on back where teeth are and twist w/two
hands. I'm an expert with makeup. Even in Rehab I had nurses aids that would
come by to see me put it on because I was not going to let my disabilty stop me
from doing that. lol Got anymore questions just ask. :)

I had a stone removed around December the size of a golf ball and it took a
couple hours each time (I had to go twice) to completely remove it and there
was no down time I went straight home and went about my business but I did have
a lot of pain for a couple days but no more than I was already having but it
helped a lot.
  I haven’t had another yet.

I was a victim to gunshot by an x boyfriend also. Just like many of you here we
survived the first few months and the why me stages. I was only 17. But I knew
I was here for a reason. I speak on crime victims behalfs, center for battered
women. I go speak too criminals officers of how this incident affected my
life. I go speak to jr. high school students about abusive relationships.
Anyone that will hear my story I'm telling it. So my satisifaction is knowing
that some where down the line I have helped someone somewhere with my testimony
of survival. I was awarded here in my community for reaching out to so many
others. You talk about realizing that my life might be different in a chair,
but the feeling of helping someone else survive is awesome.

[QUAD-L] Quad help w/questions

2007-03-14 Thread Veranda Escobar
Hey gang. Hope your day is going well. I have a few question's that maybe some
of you guys that drive have electric wheelchairs could help me with.

First off I will be driving soon for the 1st time in almost 11 yrs. Of course
I've been looking at parking spaces. Many have no line's on side wanted to
know what you do? Do you take up two parkings if needed? Or what?

Second when going to a fast food line drive thru what do tell cashier to do
if you can't reach for food from window?

Third I am now going to be in a power chair since I can not transfer from
chair to driving chair. I have always been in a manual since my incident
occured 11 yrs ago. I noticed many restaurants have lower tables that my manual
chair barely fits under at times. My power chair is a little higher. So how do
you place your self when going to a table that is way lower than chairs? Then
you have the foot rest in the way too.

Well I know I sound dumb founded, but this part of my life is going to be all
new.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. for some of you who remember I was shot at 17 by an x-boyfriend.Well I
saw him for the first time saturday since this happen. Wow you talk about
wanting to have my electric chair then. Hahahahha Just Kidding!
