Re: [QUAD-L] we made it!
I'm in the Los Angeles area and it's 80 here today. Even though I'm spoiled with warm winters in my area I'm still like the rest of you and hate winter. But at least it's bearable here and never stops me from going out. I've been a quad for 24 years and one thing I highly recommend is moving to a warm state. Think California, Texas, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico. Being cold and miserable a few months out of the year is no way to live. I looked into a few financial areas of each of these states for a quadriplegic and found California offers the most benefits. If your unemployed and on Social Security you get Higher Social Security and SSI payment than most states. Medicare and Medical pays for all Hospital, Meds, Supplies, and Wheelchairs. Free In Home Supportive Services for caregiver. Lastly Section 8 housing. So come to California all of my fellow quad's. During the day, on the times I'm not outside, I have a hard time doing anything for too long without having to go out and sit in it for at least a little while. It relaxes my muscles and I feel a lot better, then I go back to whatever I was doing. Then just before sunset I have to go out and get my last fix of sun for the night. Re: [QUAD-L] Reclining?
I have been in my chair going on 24 years. I have always used a reclining chair, never a tilt. I like that my knees get bending during raises and better blood flow for legs. I try and recline once a hour as well and even more when I'm on my putr just chillin' at home, but just like last night I was at a amusement park and only did 1 raise in 5 hours. So sometimes I'm bad. I have always done 14 hours up and 10 hours in bed. I start on my back in bed and turn on my side about 4 hours into the night. I have heard many horror stories about air cushions so I have stuck with Jay1, Jay2, and now Jay3 mud cushions. I only wear blue jeans. I rarely have any breakdown with this routine. If when I go to bed and there is any redness or openness we put Silver Sulfadazine and a 2x2 gauze patch over it and then more cream at bed time, so twice a day with cream. If it continues to be open or red I start only doing 8 hours up and 16 hours down with same cream and more time on side. This will clear it all up within a week for me. I know everyone has different reaction and situations but this has worked well for me SO FAR. As we age I think the skin breaks down and more issues will arise. I hope this information is helpful. Re: [QUAD-L] Spouse as Caregiver?
Hi group, I'm not comfortable saying much about my relationship status here because it doesn't just stay within the community and not end up on the web. I can say I have much experience in this area. Basically It comes down to no matter who cares for you be it a wife, parent, love one, or stranger do everything possible that you can do yourself. For the things you can't do yourself be patient, understanding, and grateful to those who are helping you. That doesn't mean you have to just let them do as they please with your care. Be clear with them what your full needs are. Be organized and make things go as easy as possible. IF AT ALL POSSIBLE GET OUTSIDE HELP. If you can pay someone else or get state help to do even small stuff, I think it's a great idea. Anything you can do to give your primary caregiver a break is recommended. Especially if it's someone you care about being in your life for a long time. If your in a dating or marriage situation and want it to last you must do as I said previously. As well as continually tell them how special and glad you are that they are willing to share all aspects of your life together. Being disabled means we have to work twice as hard to be romantic, sexually creative, and just plain nicer than normal people if we want love to last. Divert the care they have to do with fun, love, and laughs. Oh, and during your care periods try to keep things lite and fun when ever possible. When your together not doing quad and house stuff try really hard to make those times special. Those times can out way the quad times. My 2 cents, Donald C5-C6 22 years post

Re: [QUAD-L] Driver license renewal
I'm in California and have had my license for about 7 years. I had a regular license before my injury and it expired years later. When I got a van I could drive I applied for a new license. They did make me go through a few extra steps like a driving evaluation from a hospital and a DMV interview. After getting the ok I took the regular written and drivers test and passed with a 100 on both test. Since then I have only been pulled over once for running a stop sign and the cop looked at me and said Have a good day and let me go. I have also been in one accident that was deemed not my fault. My insurance didn't screw me or raise my rates. All of my repairs were fixed and I pay a average insurance rate. My license does have a restriction on it that says I must drive with hand controls. That is my experience so far with driving. I too will be renewing my license this year and I'm not sure if it will automatically renew or if I'll be tested again. But for the independence it gives me I'll do what ever I need too. I hope this helped in some way. Re: [QUAD-L] Driver license renewal
I wanted to add that my insurance company is aware of the fact that I drive from my wheelchair and I have several modification to my van. They said all is covered under my normal rate of payment. When I had my accident they proved it by repairing my van instead of just writing it off as a salvage loss. Due to all the money spent on modifications my van is worth more than the regular van of the same year. They paid close to 6,000 in repairs to the front end. Allstate is my insurance. Re: [QUAD-L] BP
The first thing you need to do is figure out the root cause of your hard stool. What is your diet like on a average day and what is your fluid intake? You may need to drink more water or maybe foods you like eating are causing the hard stool. Also look into your medications and see if any of them cause constipation. Some suggestions would be drink more water, avoid binding foods (find them online), take senna stool softners 2 times daily or more if needed, do bowel program at the same time daily or every other day, and lastly find a good suppository that works for you. A fellow unnamed quad asked If that were to occur, any way of gaining it back? Maybe a daily use of a penis pump? According to my Urologist and all that I've read. Hi group, I have been driving about 6 years now and luv the independence. Before I was injured I always had customized hot rods. I'm absolutely a certified car nut. I hit all the races and car shows in my area. So once I started driving again I wanted a cool ride. I took my stock van and customized it and started entering it in car shows locally. You can see it here http://www.cardomain.com/ride/3318536/1999-dodge-grand-caravan-passenger/page-1 So I'm wondering if any other quads are nutty about their van too? I'd luv to see some other wheelchair vehicles all tricked out. Send me some pics. of your vans weather mild or wild. Thanks all, Donald c5 20 years post
[QUAD-L] honey vs bag balm vs sulfadiazine
hi group, ok, here we go again with the pressure soar question. i developed my first pressure soar after 20 years. it's a stage 2 and barely open. it's about the size of a quarter. it's located on my buttock and was caused by my jay 2 cushion. i've been fighting it for 2 months now and saw my dr. a month ago. he recommended sulfadiazine or also known as silverdine and a gauze pad as well as trying to stay off of it. I was able to stay in bed for awhile but need to be up more now for my girlfriend to go to work. she has 2 more weeks of work before summer break and i need to be up 10 hours a day. it did get slightly better but now coming back from being up i'm assuming. i did get a new cushion yesterday which i'm hoping helps. i guess what i need opinions on is should i give up on the sulfadiazine and try honey or bag balm for a quicker healing result? any suggestions would be helpful. i know the obvious answer is stay down in bed but she needs to work. also is the bag balm you folks use the one in the green can or something else? thanks for your input and help, donald c5/c6 complete

Re: [QUAD-L] Unidentified subject or bowel program
i have been a part of the list since all most the beginning. this topic comes up all the time. there is no set in concrete best way to take care of your bowels. eat well, drink lots of water, and find what works for you. if you want to know what has worked from day one till now 20 years later for me its this. first off im a c5-c6 complete so what works for me might not for you. i do my bowel care every other morning. my caregiver comes in at 7am. im laying in bed on my right side with a peach pad under me. a pillow supports my back and another between my knees and ankles. caregiver clears the entrance with finger. puts in one magic bullet and one glycerine suppository. then rubs my tummy in circles a couple times. i put a folded one time hand towel on my chest for sweating. i try and fall back asleep for a while during the time i go. my caregiver also rests and comes back 1 1/2 hours later and cleans me up. results are usually good but sometimes not. i always after im cleaned up no matter the result, have the caregiver restimulate me and rub my stomach again. we wait a 1/2 hour more then clean me again if needed. thats it as for doing the deed. no sitting on a hard shower chair. i rest right through it most mornings. as far as diet goes i do have some rules for myself. on the days i did bowel care i dont eat any spicey foods or drink any alcohol. (good thing there is weed.) on the other day i eat anything i want and can drink alcohol if i want. thats it. i do eat fairly healthy but not anything special at all. as far as pills go i do take senna 1 pill twice a day and docusate 1 pill in evening on bowel care day and 2 pills in evening the other day. this program has always worked well. i average about 15 accidents a year and sometimes thats due to me breaking my rule of no spicy food or booze. also some accidents happen from illness or stress. i hope my way of taking care of the dirty deed works for someone. good luck, donald c5-c6 complete almost 20 years. Greg [and all,] If you're sitting on your commode chair for two hours your sweating my have something to do with pressure--those seats aren't padded very well. It seems we all have our own systems for bowel programs, but sometimes things change. I'll describe how I do mine, in case it might be of help to others. As a c5-6 quad I am able to tell when I need to have a bowel movement because of a certain chill I get, plus some sweating that accompanies that (mild A.D. symptoms.) Generally I need to 'go' every other day, but it depends on how much, and what, I've had to eat or drink. Once I feel the need to use the toilet I inform my caregiver and he transfers me to my shower/commode chair, pulls my pants down, rolls me over the toilet and I do my business. Generally this takes less than 15 minutes and requires no suppository or digital stimulation. I do, however, use a stimulus that works well for me: Years ago I figured out that when in the shower if I sprayed a blast of hot water underneath me [onto my rectum] it would stimulate my bowels every time. The water has to be hot, but not hot enough to scald or burn, obviously. Anyhow, the hot water sprayed underneath, briefly, causes irritation and promotes the parastalsis to begin. My shower is right next to my toilet, so when I'm sitting on my commode chair over the toilet I can still use the [hand-held] showerhead to spray underneath me and get things started. This is also a good way to clean myself underneath, after the BM. Yes, the water does sometimes get all over the bathroom floor, but that's an easy cleanup with a towel. As such, I have found that a set bowel time for me every other day does not work. Because I let my body tell me when it's time my BMs are fairly natural, quick and easy. However, there are drawbacks to this system as well. First, it requires access to your caregiver at short notice [my caregiver lives with me, so it works out.] And, second, it's more difficult to schedule around. [Another thing that has always been a laxative/stimulant for me is coffee. A cup of coffee about 20 minutes before wanting to do a bowel program starts this moving for me.] I hope this info helps someone. Don. [QUAD-L] HOMELESS QUAD
Good evening fellow quads. I was wondering if anyone has seen or heard of a homeless quad? I was asked this question by a friend and it got me thinking. For example here in Ca. they still haven't set the yearly budget and our In Home Supportive Services may be on the chopping block. So if a quad no longer had payed care they might would end up on the street. I know some will say, well then they will go to a nursing home but remember if lots of people don't have care, the homes will fill quickly. Not to mention I looked into going in a nursing home once before and couldn't find a single home that would take a quad without some kind of outside payment more than Social Security and Medicare. So group my questions are 1.) have you ever seen or heard of a homeless quad and 2.) what would you do if suddenly you had no care and or home? Take care all. Donald C5/6 19 years post

I have 2 caregivers. I also give him free room, free utilities, free cable, and free wi-fi connection. He gets around 800.00 a month after taxes. The new caregiver is a medical student plus works pt at a restaurant. So that's the low down here. Every case is different due to disability, living arrangement, and location. Take care, Donald C5/C6
[QUAD-L] SWEATING ONLY OR MAINLY IN CHAIR
Hi group, I read some of the posts regarding the sweating problem. I too have had this problem and ran a bunch of test. The doctors where pretty stumped. I think that I have finally figured out that it's a UTI problem. When we sit up it puts more pressure on the bladder which irritates the bladder when it's already upset from the UTI. It causes pain and then we sweat. I take a daily antibiotic for urine and have no more sweating. I may be wrong but it has helped me. Good luck and great health, Donald C5
[QUAD-L] here's the deal arizona quads...
this is donald again, i currently live in the los angeles area. i'm single and have a live-in caregiver. i'm also unemployed and have been since my injury. i have lived here for most of my 41 years, and the few years i didn't were in bullhead city, az. where i was injured 18 years ago. my folks own the home i'm in now plus the one they live-in in bullhead. i'm thinking about moving to bullhead or phoenix soon because i think calif. will soon start cutting programs due to budget problems. parents could sell this home and buy me another cheaper in az. it has been a pretty good situation so far. i receive ss and ssi for money which is about 900.00 a month. for medical needs i get medicare and medi-cal and pay nothing for dr.'s, meds, and supplies including wheelchairs and repairs. i get what's called in-home supportive services that pays any caregiver of my choice 9.00 per hour for 8 hours a day for my care. for 240 hours a month. for housing i get section 8 housing that pays most of my rent and allows me to rent from my folks due to the major renovations to my home. for transportation i do drive and have my own van but also use access services which is a service were a van takes you anywhere in so calif. for about 2.00 with a call a day in advance. like i said it's been pretty good here. but if they cut ihss or section 8 or both then not so great. no caregiver and no rent. maybe even medical cuts. so my questions are as follows, would i still get ss and ssi? for medical i'm sure i get medicare but does the state pay for things medicare doesn't? what in-home care program do you have, what's pay, and how many hours do you get? do you have a renters assistance program? and in phoenix do they have any transportation program? i'm looking into the future and trying to make plans before all goes to hell here. thanks for any info. donald
[QUAD-L] is anyone on list living in arizona?

Re: [QUAD-L] Mattress
i have been a quad for a mere 16 years and i have a cal king size motionless water bed. basically its a regular box spring with a foam bucket that holds 9 individual tubes of water covered with a foam cap. i have only had 1 small pressure soar from my cushion wearing out. i have always enjoyed the fact my bedroom doesn't look clinical with something like a hospital bed. i also like having a 2 person bed for the times in life Ive had a girlfriend and the rest of the time my dog uses the other side. the foam cap on my bed is wearing out a bit and I'm thinking about my next bed. i still want a king size but not sure what type. memory foam, posturepedic, or maybe air. I'm curious do most of you use a medical type bed or a regular bed and which types or brands of both kinds? thanks, donald Dan [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I have had the same mattress on my hospital bed for 30 years or more so it's pretty much worn out. I called my medical supplier to order a new one - we'll see! Dan - Never miss a thing. Make Yahoo your homepage.
[QUAD-L] GAME CONTROLLER
I'M AT A C5/C6 LEVEL. MY HANDS ARE CLOSED LIKE A FIST BASICLY SO I CAN GRASP THINGS. I PLAY A PLAY STATION 2. I BOUGHT A LOGITECH CONTROLLER FROM A PLACE CALLED GAME STOP WHICH IS AT EVERY MALL. I THINK THIS CONTROLLER WORKS ON X BOX ALSO. IT WAS ABOUT 20.00 AND IS WIRELESS. I THEN WENT TO LOWES AND BOUGHT CLEAR TUBING THATS 3/4 OD X 5/8 ID VINYL AND CUT 2 PIECES ABOUT 6 INCHES LONG FOR LIKE 2.00. IT SLIDES OVER THE 2 KNOBS PRETTY SNUGGLY BUT I STILL SUPER GLUED MINE ON. THEN I JUST SLIDE MY HANDS ON AND PLAY. OR ONE HAND ON AND HIT BUTTONS WITH THE OTHER. OF COURSE SOME GAMES ARE TOO HARD TO PLAY LIKE THIS BUT I LOVE DRIVING GAMES AND IT WORKS GREAT FOR ME. [QUAD-L] Custom Vans
Hi group, I'm a C5/C6 Quad post 16 years living in the Los Angeles area and was a member of the group years ago and just rejoined the group last week. Before my injury I always had custom Hot Rods but afterward just had normal full sized vans that were your typical wheelchair vans with nicer wheels and tinted windows and I could only passenger but not drive. About 2 years ago I got the opportunity to get a used 1999 Dodge Caravan with low miles on it that was already setup for a quad to drive. Now that I was back behind the wheel I wanted something more than a soccer mom's minivan. Over the next year I customized my van with paint, interior, wheels, huge stereo, intake, exhaust, painted under hood, and over 50 modifications. I now do about 20 car shows a year and have a dozen trophies. It's crazy how much attention my van draws at shows. I guess people are bored of the usual Mustangs and Cameros and enjoy something unique. I let the kids go inside and the mom's say, hey I want a van like that. Other people in chairs say, you give me ideas for my van. So far I'm the only one in a wheelchair at the shows except one guy who's a para and transfers into a normal Corvette. I'd love to have others with custom wheelchair vans join me at some shows or even start a van club. If you would like to see a few pictures of my van you can go to my myspace page and click on pics.. The pictures are a little older and I've done more to it since but you'll get the idea. myspace.com/rollingluvr I hope to see more wheelchair vans that are more than transportation. Keep on cruising, Donald - Be a better pen pal. Text or chat with friends inside Yahoo! Mail. See how.
