You may be able to hit TAB on installer boot which will allow you to edit
command line options. If not, try the suggestion at
https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/uefi-troubleshooting/#change-installer-kernel-parameters-in-uefi.

[qubes-users] Qubes OS 4.0 Anaconda Time-Out X-Server Failed to Start

2018-04-01 Thread jonmchenry110
Greetings,

Over the last week I have tried installing Qubes OS 4.0 on my laptop. I have
tried both RC5 and the Full Release version (thinking the latter may have fixed
the issue I'm facing). In addition, I downloaded both twice and burned them
twice to DVD, so I don't think it is a corruption issue. Each time I attempt
install, everything goes fine until it attempts to start up Anaconda. It
always ends with it timing out and X server failing to start. My laptop is an
ASUS ROG with both an Intel and Nvidia GPU. I have read through any threads I
could find that are similar to what I'm dealing with but none seem to solve it.
In the past, I could use the nomodeset kernel option to get around a driver
issue, but I am not given any option during boot to change any kernel options.
I'm not sure what to do at this point. Forgive me if the answer has been given
before and I simply have not come across it. Thanks in advance for your
assistance.

In my opinion, it's so marginal a security decrease it hardly bears
mention. :) There's a link in the trim doc for further reading.

I'd like to remind people: Discard and TRIM are not exactly the same thing.

Commands like 'fstrim' only generate discards, and in a Qubes LVM setup
those discards will logically deallocate blocks in the pool, thus
freeing up space for filesystems.

If you enable 'discard' or 'disktrim' or whatever they call it these
days in crypttab, that will result in discards being converted into
hardware TRIM commands. That is because the crypto layer is the one
closest to the hardware in our configuration.

Does TRIM free up space? No. It helps the SSD maintain top write speeds
and perform more efficient wear-leveling. On some drives, it will also
cause the unallocated data to be wiped-out (according to vendor claims).

Does fstrim free up space? Yes! Because it actually generates discards
and the name is misleading.

IMO, the best thing to do is edit your dom0 /etc/fstab and add 'discard'
to the options for root fs '/'. That will free up space in a usable way
and you won't need to run fstrim.

Does your T430 have Nvidia graphics? If so, you could try turning it off
in the BIOS.

Also, you should try updating your BIOS if you haven't recently.

Re: [qubes-users] Re: Lenovo G505S Coreboot

2018-04-01 Thread Ivan Ivanov
Thank you very much for answering the qubesthrowaway's questions !
Regarding
> Some of us G505s users are putting together a page with tips on
Coreboot and Qubes, but I'm not sure where it will end up yet
- sorry for delay! we just got a bit distracted with KolibriOS driver stuff
(will be really awesome if that assembly network driver becomes a reality!),
in the same time we would like to
1) upgrade the LZMA libraries of coreboot/seabios - the currently used
ones are very very outdated
2) add paq8px compression support for putting even more useful stuff
to our small 4 MB BIOS chips
By the way it could be possible to upgrade a BIOS chip to 8 MB or even
to 16 MB ;-)
Asterysk has been trying to test this but accidentally damaged a
copper track on his motherboard,
so its going to take a while before we find out the answer to this question.
Ideally we'd like to stay at 4 MB, because if some of us would be
sitting at 8 MB / 16 MB
while everyone else is at 4 MB BIOS chips - that would result in
unnecessary fragmentation,
so more of our efforts should be going towards those "compression methods".
On average, paq8px is 25% better compression than LZMA used by coreboot/SeaBIOS,
but it is much slower - perhaps it is going to take about 3 minutes to
extract 1.44MB KolibriOS floppy
to boot it, although we have not tested this on bare metal (from
coreboot) yet - could be faster!
There are also some extra challenges, e.g. paq8px sources are C++ but
coreboot is C
and doesn't even have g++ in its' toolchains, so I'm unsure how to
merge them together.
And using a "random g++" provided by some distro does not guarantee
that this will be bootable.
Maybe you know a great way of how to put C++ code into coreboot and
make it compile?

Best regards,
Ivan Ivanov aka qmastery

[qubes-users] [Qubes 4.0] Debian 9 unusable

2018-04-01 Thread schwoereraxel
Hello all.
I was on Qubes 3.2 and I've switched of Qubes 4.0 but I have some problems :
In fact, I can't use and update/upgrade Debian 9.
And also, I would like to know how to switch the language of Qubes 4.0 ? I
already made this on Qubes 3.2 before.
To finish, does it possible to sort the VM on the Qubes VM Manager ? Like
TemplateVM with TemplateVM, and NetVM with NetVM, etc.

Thanks in advance.

Not sure if it will help with what you're doing, but if you go to the dom0
Volume control audio mixer/Output Devices/Advanced, you can set a +/-
latency offset there.

I couldn't the original dvm template. It was just keep telling domain was in
use but I coudln't figure out where lol. could delete custom dvm templates np.
Not sure about other default qubes didn't try. Was curious about that myself
never had that problem in 3.2

I have also had the exact same problem with restore, was giving me double
vms. Figured this out after reinstalling whole system lmao. and it happened to
me again and realized it was from restore backup. It doubled the ones that
were previously installed instead of overwriting them.

But so instead of just deleting the ones with 0.0kb i just deleted all appvms
and restored them again and let it finish.

now no errors on boot now except the usual failed to install kernel modules or
something marek said while back it was safe to ignore.

Also made sure not to select use all template with whonix updatevm because then
fedora can't update and you have to edit some config file. I had to reinstall
whole system cuase of that too just be on the safe side haha.

ya but then the qubes manager is in scrambled order and you have to keep

OK, I have x2go working now. I had an ssh command in my .bash_profile on the
target computer which was responsible. When I removed it, I got x2go working. I
am now using x2go from a Qube based on fedora 26.

I still have the problem with the external audio card. I tried it on another
computer and it works fine and of course it worked with Qubes OS 3.2. Does the
latency problem in Qubes 4.0 still exist if I don't use USB for
microphone/speakers but instead use the internal speakers/mic of the computer
(or the headphones/computer mic jack)? What I am referring to is this
documentation page: https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/external-audio/. This seems
to be saying that for things requiring high quality audio (even Skype) an
external card is needed. I tried Skype test call using the mic/headphone jack
and I assigned the mic to the Qube I was using and the test call went fine. So
does the latency issue described on the page referenced above still exist?
Before using the external audio card on Qubes 3.2 I did run into problems with
the audio in audio/video conferences (the audio would drop sometimes) until I
started using the external audio card.

Thanks.

what programs you need from Ubuntu? can't install them in debian? debian
would be more secure just on updates alone you get them sooner then later.

Loved trisquel with the minimal flashback desktop, and fsf kernel. , was
building my own with grsec. but for the same reason they based on debian then
based on ubuntu you get updates double late. 1 to 30 days later man. 1 day
later ok, but I wouldn't be using it for anything sensitive.

I believe it is for 4.0. hopefully they make it easier in the future. The
less novice user is just gonna keep attaching whole controllers with mouse
from widget as the easiest option for the same reasons.

typing that in every time is real cumbersome.

Thank you!

Actually, in 4.0, that command would be "qvm-device" as referenced at
https://dev.qubes-os.org/projects/core-admin-client/en/latest/manpages/qvm-device.html

Also, I noticed that the drive didn't auto-mount after being attached. So I
still needed to (b) find the device, (c) mount it manually:

  $ sudo fdisk -l

  $ sudo mount /dev/xvdi /mnt/removable

Is this expected behavior? If yes, is there a way to make these 3 steps
persistent in Qubes OS?

It has been about more than just qubes for a long time now - general
privacy/security threads are good to have.
I have been here for years and on other ML's for longer so I know it is
better to not have strict on-topic rules.
Not to mention that for a long time purisms laptops were recommended by
the purism developers (so I believe it is somewhat on topic) in exchange
for kickbacks despite being a terrible choice for privacy/security my
for the price of one purism you could have bought both a nice owner
controlled laptop (G505S) and a libre VM gaming desktop (KCMA-D8 or
KGPE-D16 plus other parts) that both run qubes 4.0.

I would definitely appreciate a thunderbird thread and I think you
should make one as how I make my counter-puricrapism posts.
I am the only critical voice whereas purism has the entire tech media on
their side somehow issuing glorified press releases and always failing
to mention that their marketing is full of lies.

I am more than happy to help the next time you are in the market for a
computer :] it is a damn shame how dishonest purism isbut there are
still some honest companies out there selling real libre products.

Btw the debian template is not as secure due to their silly position on
starting unconfigured daemons by default the moment you install them.

otherwise I could literally root your computer with a few commands due

It looks like you are trying to install rc3? 4.0 final shipped earlier
this week, maybe you should download and try the newest version instead?

If you're referring to the rom from Qmaster's post from a year ago, it
doesn't contain the microcode update needed to run 4.0. See
https://review.coreboot.org/22843? . There are some more notes
http://dangerousprototypes.com/docs/Lenovo_G505S_hacking, but be warned
it's still pretty rough. I can help you build your own Coreboot image with
the patch or if you trust anonymous strangers bearing gifts, send you the
one I built for myself. Let me know if you need either!

I decided to use your prebuilt rom and flashed it successfully on my G505s last
night. Afterwards, I began the Qubes 4.0 installation. It installed fine, but
following the restart it freezes while setting up the Template VMs. I waiting
several hours to verify that it was indeed frozen. I restarted and tried setup
again and it keeps freezing at various points (Fedora Template, Debian
Template, Whonix). I then tried a fresh reinstall but that yielded the same

I'm currently in the process of downloading 4.0 again and I'll try the install
on a different usb stick. Is there anything else that I might try to make this
work? Thanks for any assistance.

[qubes-users] Qubes 4.0: Attaching optical drive to read data from

2018-04-01 Thread 00010agency
When I insert a data DVD (that I only want to read from) into my integrated
optical drive, the usual pop up says that the drive is available ("Device:
dom0:sr0 ... is available").

However, when I then go into the Qube Mananger, select for example the
"personal" Qube, then click on the menu option "Attach/detach block devices" in
the menu "Qube", then there does not appear anything, so no optical drive
either.

Am I doing something wrong?

It looks like R4.0 final requires at least the /etc/crypttab discard
option be added, because when I tried to run fstrim -av without it, it
kept telling me 0 bytes trimmed. rd.luks.option does not seem to be needed
any more under R4.0.

Check this here:
https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues/2841

I am unsure if iommu=no-igfx is the right option for the X230.
I would press "e" on boot and edit the grub prompt, let us know how it
works with changing the iommu-setting upon boot.

[qubes-users] X230 won't boot into Qubes after installing 4.0

2018-04-01 Thread Andreas Rasmussen
I tried to install Qubes 4.0 on my Lenovo Thinkpad X230. The install went
smoothly without having to do any work in the BIOS.

However, upon reboot/startup I get the following error and then a black screen.
Any clues to how I should continue?

I installed Qubes 3.2 without problems and have been using 3.2 on this machine
since the release.

best,
Andreas

You're right, the documentation isn't very clear there on what those old
and new names are for. I think you might be specifying multiple pool
names.

Can you try these steps instead and see if it works?

First, get a list of your pool names with `qvm-pool`. Then, clone your
existing VM to the target pool with:

qvm-clone -P

[qubes-users] Cosider distributing an Ubuntu Image with a different name

2018-04-01 Thread 'qubuntu' via qubes-users
It seems Ubuntu is not concerned about modified distro redistribution but
rather about modified redistribution with Ubuntu name in it.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Ubuntu/comments/88hph4/ubuntu_on_qubes_os_copyright/

That is rather reasonable. Cos people would make a very bad crappy distro and
have Ubuntu in the name.
This would lead to Ubuntu gettiCan't Qubes devsng a very bad name and a lot of
memes.

Ubuntu also seems to say that you need to recompile from sources incase of
redistribution.

Qubes devs are paranoid guys and I assume they compile from sources anyway.

So, can't you guys just rename Ubuntu to something else and distribute a
template?

Like Linux Mint, Zorin, Elementary or something else.

The main benefit I see from a Ubuntu template is PPAs which are not available
from any other distro.

For example there is a Android app runner which runs apps in container like
systems in Ubuntu PPA.

A lot of softwate is available in PPAs.

I hope I can see `Qubetoo` or `Qubtu` or `Quppa` or `Qubetu` or `Qubes too`
`Qubes tu` or `Qumate` or `Qumint` or `Qorin` or `cheesy name here` template
for Qubes with the 18.04 LTS release soon.

You may ask me to compile from sources, but it takes ages and I have to spend
hours and I ususally reinstall often which means I would have to compile often
