QWS List question about selecting
1st, good morning/evening/afternoon, as the case may be in your part of the world. I'm new to qws, though not to midi. I have a question, hope some1 can help. I have 9 tracks. I want to select from bar 51 to the end of the song delete the notes from all tracks that fall into that time selection. How is this done? I set my left marker at bar 51, my right marker at bar 60, then pressed shift down arrow to select all tracks, ctrl m to set marked. I tried different combinations of these keypresses, then delete, but the notes still remain. I've looked at the manual, but obviously it didn't clarify things for me. Any help would really be appreciated, I thank every1 who can will assist me in advance. May you be blessed. -- Change the world--1 deed at a time Jackie McBride Check out my homepage at: www.abletec.serverheaven.net please join my fight against breast cancer http://teamacs.acsevents.org/site/TR?px=1790196pg=personalfr_id=3489 To unsubscribe or change list options, see http://lists.andrelouis.com for archived list posts, see http://www.mail-archive.com/qws@andrelouis.com
QWS List selecting marked time in multiple tracks
James: I have 9 tracks. I want to cut part of the song. I set from thru markers, shift down arrow to select all tracks, then hit ctrl m to select marked. I can't get this or any other variation to work. Can one only cut in 1 track w/qws? That doesn't seem quite right, so I'm probably missing something. Also a suggestion. While the note transforms are ok, it'd be very nice to be able to specify a range of notes to transpose, e.g., c4-b4 etc.

From: Juan Bello juanpisj...@gmail.com on Saturday, October 03, 2009 7:22 PM Hi list, I know I had asked this about a week ago but my need for it is crucial at this particular time. I sought to use several software that together would allo me to render my own midi creations or song sequencing data into any yamaha keyboard style file. However, the problem lies fundamentally in that the markers i place on the midi file MUST not be labelled anything but say, mainA, mainB, fill-in AB, ETC. to delimit the style sections. The problem now is that qws does not support text markers. It does support markers but qws assigns its own proprietary names to markers (like left, right, and 1 through 20) but that doesn't help since I need to modify the marker names so that I can propperly delimit the accompaniment style sections. I know other sequencers (which I can't afford right now) such as cakewalk let you place markers and then you can define or put the name you want to those markers. So the question is.. is there any possibility that something like this can also be implemented on QWS? I think it'd be more helpful because when I'm workin g with midi files I forget frequently where I had placed the 2nd marker, the first one, and so on. I think naming them would be useful on that respect, and of course the midi file would store such info, not qws. Try: http://www.blitter.com/~russtopia/MIDI/~jglatt/progs/software.htm then click the link midi assembler/disassembler. It'd be another process into making styles, but I was thinking qws could have that ability. Besides, as I had said before many other sequencers support this and its not easy to remember if marker 1 was the coda, marker 2 the solos, ETC. Making styles with the programs from at the unofficial yamaha resource is somewhat accessible, but the only limitation I'm facing is that of the text markers. Raymond, u do *so* know what you're talking about! it confirms my suspicion that perhaps not all is well w/the interaction between qws MS WaveTable, though having said thus, I personally have no such problems. Maybe it has to do w/certain programs running on certain systems. If any1 else is having similar issues, they should post to the list to let James know. James, u listening to this discussion? Can u give any insights? This is not just a simple matter of a newby who doesn't know wuddup. He does. We've walked thru the steps, though Johnny is new to electronic music, he's very good w/a computer, I'm a technician of nearly 20 years experience. I owned the midimag list for years, many on that list can testify of the technical help I've provided. I believe I can give very reasonable assurances that the simple things have *not* been overlooked. I feel I've pretty much ruled out the possibility of malware. I may ask Johnny to run 1 or 2 more diagnostics w/me, but there is definitely something amiss here, as he is able to use the MS synth to play midi in other programs--just not in qws. Raymond's experience also confirms that perhaps not all is as it should be. I will post back to the list when I find an alternative softsynth we can experiment with. Meanwhile, I do encourage any1 having similar issues to post let the list know. First, go into qws, go to the options menu, select ports. In here is a list of all midi in and out ports. Arrow down to the microsoft gs wavetable synth and make sure the use this port checkbox is checked. That's all that we need to do here. This dialog only tells qws which ports it should use or not use. It does not tell it the default port to use. Don't worry about what ports are selected in this dialog. Press the okay button, then go to the options menu again, this time go to options, and press enter. Here is where we set the default port that will be used. Set this to microsoft and pres enter. Now, the tricky part. Open a midi, and go to the track list box, it's the only list box there. Make sure it says microsoft gs wavetable synth at the very end of the name. You might have to maximize the window if the track's name is too long. If it says another midi device, which it shouldn't, but if it does, go to the track properties and set the port to microsoft. If everything is in check, try to play it. If it doesn't play, then we have a problem. So far i've only found one sollution, and even sometimes it doesn't work. open a midi in Windows Media Player or whatever program you use to play midis. then go back to qws and play the file. If you hear both midis playing at the same time, then at least we're getting somewhere. stop the file in media player. If the qws midi still plays, then we're golden! If both midis stop, you might have to keep trying, maybe just pausing it in media player instead of stopping. If you can't get it to work no matter what, well then we're stuck. You could try restarting qws, or the the computer, and seeing if that helps. Oddly, this has only happened on one computer of mine. And, by coincidence, that's the computer i

Re: QWS List is QWS harder to use than most midi applications?
Raymond, ( this is no offense to James) but IMO, its interface is quite awkward. For example, in most midi programs, u can bring up an event list editor, get a list of all events, edit them. W/QWS, the event list only goes by beat, u have to keep clicking to go to the next 1, etc. U also have to right-click in order to edit the value(s) u want. Then there's the note editor control editor, etc., all of which I'm used to being able to handle thru an event list. So, yes--I could see where folks might find it slow or cumbersome or both, especially if they were used to being able to do edits from a single interface. On 8/7/11, Raymond Grote musicalm...@comcast.net wrote: Hi all, Here's an interesting question. When I learned QWS, I didn't have anyone to help me out with it, just the setting up the keyboard part. And I had to learn most of the tools and functions myself. While I am a decent musician, I don't consider myself better than everyone. But QWS just came natural to me, a little more than I had expected. There are sighted people I know that know way more than I do, who use other programs which are not at all accessible. They have a whole workstation in front of them, and they can do way more than impport midi data and play it back, they can tweak pretty much every synth and effect peramitor there is. Whether they actually know the ins and outs of it I don't know, but it sure seems like they do. Now the question. I know people who are impressed with the work I do, contrary to my opinion, lol. but, they wanted to know how I did it, but they're sort of geared into something like I said above and I'm not sure exactly how to approach QWs. I initially said, The manual's really good, you should understand it. I was under the impression that QWS's features were pretty familiar to any midi sequencer that knows what they're doing, and it would be ridiculously simple. But then an hour later they'd uninstall because it was either too complicated for them or too slow. I then realized that QWS and a DAW are pretty different, QWS is like Notepad, where it doesn't offer amazing functions with one clikc. You have to use the thirty or so tools that it provides you, in the way you want them, not go by some factory of presets already made for you and tweak it from there. So am I even partially right? Is QWS really complicated from that standpoint, or could it be lack of patience? We've all seen what Andre can do with it, I myself found it hard to believe that he used QWS at first since I'm nowhere near that level. Maybe some of you here have had similar experiences and can give more insight. -- Blame the computer--why not? For best results, put all tempo marks in the very first track and technically, I believe you should only have tempo on this track. 1. You can use the Change Properties command (Track menu) to change a variety of common settings at the current cursor position. This includes changing program, bank, pan, etc, and tempo. This is perhaps the easiest way to enter tempo settings, but they always occur at the beginning of a beat. 2. Controller Editor. The Controller Editor works in a very similar way to the Note Editor (except that the controller events aren't played when you land on them. If you select Number (N key) 131, then you can insert tempo events. 3. Event List. The Event List shows the MIDI events as a list. There's perhaps lots of numbers, but it allows the finest level of control. You can Insert (I key) a new event and choose Tempo from the list. Then set the Start position (S key) and the tempo value (N key for Number). The Controller Editor and the Event List allow you to enter as many tempo events as you like and at any position. And finally, but not least: the hot key to set the initial song tempo is Ctrl+T. I hope this helps. Re: QWS List ports problem revisited
Joe, despite appearances to the contrary, this is not really a qws issue, in that many folks who use win 10 but not qws experience this. Unfortunately, finding the solution can be a very complex process. I've got my 2 grandkids livin w/me right now, I hardly have time to wee (forget shut-eye), much less troubleshoot something as complex as this, but perhaps the following link will help. https://www.sweetwater.com/sweetcare/articles/resolving-midi-device-issues-on-pc-and-mac/ You haven't provided much info, ie, what keyboard you're using, how it connects to the pc, etc, all of which would perhaps help narrow down the many possible solutions. I wish I were in a position to help further, but I'm not. Good luck w/this. You will need someone well versed in Win10 & hardware/software interactions, I'm afraid, because I truly suspect that this has little or nothing to do w/qws per se. 1 of the 1st things I'd try is to unplug your keyboard, go to control panel > device manager. Hit alt v, then w, to view hidden devices, & then uninstall all devices having to do w/midi. Restart the machine, reconnect the keyboard, & see if the situation changes. Beyond that, as I said, the situation becomes really dicey, & I'm not in a position to go further w/it, unfortunately. Re: QWS List QWS failing to launch.

If yes, then try re-enabling them 1 by 1, testing after each until you find the 1 that breaks QWS.
