It depends a fair bit on the tire size, doesn't it? If you go from a
32 to a 42 you're talking about 1cm, depending on how the tire's
height ends up.

[RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne First Impressions

Pictures? sounds like beautiful build

My 60cm Sam Hillborne partial build arrived on Friday and I spent the
weekend putting it together.  This is truly a gorgeous bike.  The
paint looks fantastic and the lugs are very nice.  Mine has a bit
fancier down tube lug than the one photographed by Renaissance
Bicycles.  I'll post photos once it's wearing its fenders (not at the
 moment).

I commute daily and this is now my daily rider (replacing massively
upgraded 1971 Peugeot UO-8).   I'll give riding impressions here and
if you want to know how its set up then keep reading below.

The ride is very smooth.  My first impression is man those handle
bars are really up there!  This will come as no surprise to Riv
riders, I imagine, but it was surprising to me.  At first I wasn't
sure about it, but now I find it very comfortable.  The frame geometry
is in general very comfortable.  I know this is Grant's shtick, but
he's not just talking, it's for real.  At the moment the saddle feels
a bit far forward, but it's not on the right post yet.

I had never ridden bar-end shifters.  The one thing I didn't like
about the Hillborne frame was the lack of provision for down tube
shifters (my preference).  But I ordered it and took the leap of
faith.  I got used to these things in two rides and now it's totally
natural.  I like it.  The Silver shifters are very close copies of the
SunTour Sprints that I run on my Peugeot.  They work great in bar end
configuration, something I wouldn't have expected.

I was convinced by Keven at Riv on the phone to order the Schwalbe
Marathon Supremes instead of the Jack Browns.  I wanted the look of
the tan sidewall but I thought, Heck these guys know what they're
doing and if he says get the Schwalbes, then do it.  I still want to
try the Jack Browns for comparison at some point, but for now I'm very
happy.  These ride like butter!  Through the rougher parts of the road
it's like floating on air over the mess.

With 7 speeds in the rear and three in the front (haven't needed that
tiny front one yet), I feel like I have infinite gearing available.
The SRAM rear derailleur is fast and smooth and highly accurate.
Never ridden one before but I'm very happy with it.

I highly recommend this bike.  It's comfortable, easy to ride, and
plenty light and quick, even decked out with gear that is not
 amazingly light weight.

Here's how I have it set up at the moment.  I should say here that I
weigh 230lbs (and live on top of a big hill and commute through an
industrial area) and that I have a history of doing damage to axles,
drive-side cups/cones, and cranksets.  I ordered things to be rugged
because I don't want to deal with repairing stuff as much as possible.

  * 60 cm Sam Hillborne frame
  * Phil Rivy Hubs with Velocity Dyad Rims (Rich built)
  * IRD 7sp freewheel
  * Schwalbe Marathon Supreme 42mm tires
  * Sugino XD2 cranks (175mm) a la Riv
  * Campagnolo Mirage front derailleur
  * SRAM X-7 rear derailleur
  * Silver bar end shifters
  * Nitto Noodle bars
  * Cane Creek SCR-5 levers (tan)
  * Velo Orange Grenouille cantilevers
  * Velo Orange 110mm stem
  * Velo Orange stem adaptor
  * Velo Orange road pedals (chrome cages) with MKS tall clips and
 Christophe straps
  * Velo Orange type 2 bottle holders
  * New Brooks B-17 honey saddle (borrowed from my Raleigh
 Professional)
  * Campagnolo Nuovo Record seat post (borrowed from my Raleigh
 Professional)

I have a Velo Orange seat post and Cardiff Mercia saddle waiting at
home to go on the bike for tomorrow's riding.  We'll see how that
changes things.  This weekend I will be fitting Velo Orange 52mm alloy
fenders and will get photos on the first sunny day after that. :)

 Cheers,
 Karl

2009-06-18 Thread clevewheel

With regard to puncture resistance, I highly recommend spending $4 on
a roll of one inch Gorilla tape and applying it to the inside of the
tire in the same way you'd apply the now very expensive Panaracer
Flataway. I have it on my Hetres and it's doing a fine job.

They are definitely not as puncture resistant as the tires they

positively say, with back to back comparison,  that there is a
noticeable difference in feel between the similar Maxy Fasty tires.

The most accurate comparison I can provide is:  The Maxy Fasty's feel
like riding over suede whereas the Cypres' feel like riding over
  velvet.

Of course, the Cypres' lighter casing and thinner tread is a trade off
for durability.  That analysis is for each rider to determine on their
own.  For me, that means riding the MF's for utility, errands,

[RBW] Re: Thank goodness for steel spokes and Rich Lesnik

2009-06-18 Thread avillage

Wow...I can just feel the endo. Ouch, oh...

I've ridden Mavic Reflex and Open Pros for years before going with a
Riv and Rich built wheels. Despite the annoying tic sound that can
occur at times due to the joining piece at the seam, the wheels
performed flawlessly. Alloy all the way.

I didn't entirely trust Mavic's response because, in any event, why
would the spokes break and wheel just disintegrate? Maybe I just don't
get the physics of the situation and it seems like, regardless, the
wheel is dangerous. If a tire flats in race conditions (or any
conditions), if the rider lost control, the wheel should, I think,
stay intact. Endos might happen and the wheel, though maybe damaged,
should be intact.

The point, I think, is that carbon fails catastrophically.

On my first test ride on my Bleriot last fall (I had just sold a
Serotta Colorado Concept from about 1987 or so, maybe an original), I
hit something with great force with the front wheel. To this day I
don't know what it was. Going over the bars, I slid down the street,
fearing for me and the brand new bike. I recovered, the bike was
unharmed except for stuff I could easily replace, and, amazingly, the
Rich built wheel was not only intact but also rideable. I ride it to
this day. It has a very slight dent that doesn't affect ride-ability.
I emailed Rich to thank him. What would have happened with
carbon...who knows.

On Jun 17, 6:06 pm, Chicken Sandwich brons2.li...@gmail.com wrote:
There are other carbon-fiber spoked wheels out there that have been
performing well for years.  This particular Mavic rim is just a bad design
and prone to failures.  But then again, so are the Ksyriums for that matter,
which are metal rims with metal spokes.  I've seen enough of them taco'ed to
 stay away.

I don't see people going around blowing up Zipp wheels on a regular basis,
 or Hed or Spinnergy either.

I will admit that, I am not a fan of Mavic rims at all, no matter what
materials they are made of.  They have given me lots of problems.

using it where it probably doesn't yet belong.  We all realize the pressure
the industry has to race to the Next Big Thing, but riders (racers, in
particular) are being used as Guinea pigs.  Advanced engineering requires
advanced, and extensive, testing.  I trust Mavic to make metal rims.  But
that's all.  Until they quit treating their customers like crash test

I highly recommend the Hetre, although I have to admit to complete
lack of experience regarding the narrower tire. The Hetre has changed
the way I ride in that it gives so much more stability. Descent is no
longer a white knuckle affair, but a joy. It is a very fast tire,
depending only on the engine. I don't know what the trail is on the
Bleriot, but putting a wider tire on it will change the steering - I

The Bleriot is the same setup as the Saluki. I recently put Hetres on my
saluki and I'm thrilled with the result. Handling is the same as it
was, only the ride is far more plush. This is particularly noticeable
as the pavement quality deteriorates or the pavement disappears.
Also, the tire feels noticeably faster than the Col de la Vie or the

[RBW] Re: SF Question

2009-06-18 Thread fiddlr40

There are hotels in older buildings that cater to European tourists in
SF and are in the $100 per night range, which in my experience is
pretty cheap for lodging in a big city. Hotel Rex, Hotel Carlton, Post

[RBW] Long Sleeve lightweight wool shirts?

Anyone know of a lightweight/microweight long sleeve or three quarter
sleeve loose fitting wool shirt?
I'm basically looking for more arm coverage (sun protection) but less
weight and more airflow for these hot southern summers.
I have a seersucker that i'll wear with a short sleeve wool base layer
which is great but I would rather have just the one layer.
Every long sleeve wool shirt I come across has tight fitting cuffs (so
no airflow up the sleeve) and they are heavy weight.

World Headquarters, SFMOMA and other art galleries.  So any
suggestions on where to stay area wise or actual hotel suggestions
would be much appreciated.  I'm pretty cool with cycling or walking
around the city and definitely am cool with the BART and such.  I
think I'd rather be closer to the gallery zone (which seems to be
within Misson/Market and 1st/4th) and BART/Bicycle out to other
activities but I also don't want to fork over my first born.  Anyway
any and all advice is appreciated.

 thanks,

[RBW] FT or FF: NIB Shimano LX Shifter Pods

2009-06-18 Thread cm

I have a set of 9 speed Shimano LX shifter pods (not the kind with the
break levers) up for grabs. I believe the model number is 580-- though
I am not sure. They are new and in the packaging. I was hoping to
trade them for something that I could use on my Bleriot, or, if that
doesn't work out, offer them up for the cost of shipping ($5). Someone
out there must use this type of shifter.

Things I would love to trade for:
1) Front derailer ( new, able to work with my compact road crankset--
gonna use friction)
2) Bottom Bracket (new, campy, 68x111)

OK those two are the dream

3) new 650b tubes (2)
4) cloth bar tape-- enough for both sides of my 44cm noodle
5) new seatpost bolt for the Bleriot
6) ?

If no one wants to trade :( -- I will give them to anyone who will use
them. (Really hoping for that BB or derailer though!!)

Cheers!!

[RBW] Re: Long Sleeve lightweight wool shirts?

2009-06-18 Thread PATRICK MOORE
I have collected quite a collection of very nice Merino wool pullovers,
lightweight and long sleeved, from my local Goodwills -- less than $5 each,
and in an assortment of attractive colors. I collected so many that last
year I gave away five or six and I still have close to a dozen left. Even if
you can't shop at such an exclusive chain, you might look in your local
department stores for these things. Many are Italian, but I forget all the
brand names. I have button and zip plaquets as well as crewnecks and
turtlenecks. They are my sole cold weather riding tops.

I'm basically looking for more arm coverage (sun protection) but less

I have a seersucker that i'll wear with a short sleeve wool base layer
which is great but I would rather have just the one layer.
Every long sleeve wool shirt I come across has tight fitting cuffs (so
no airflow up the sleeve) and they are heavy weight.

[RBW] Re: SF Question

2009-06-18 Thread John Geiger

One place right in the city that I like is the Mosser on 4th. It is a
half block from Market St. and just outside of the Powell Bart
station. Its a nice, clean, modern hotel with small rooms and really
great rates for that area. There are also shared bathroom rooms with
really inexpensive rates. We have used it for business travel and
because of the quality, location, and price can recommend it. Even if
you decide to stay outside the city it might be fun to spend a night
downtown.

[RBW] Re: Long Sleeve lightweight wool shirts?

2009-06-18 Thread Rick

I second the Icebreaker recommendation, the superlight shirts are
excellent. I too have other wool products, but they are generally too
heavy for warm-weather wear. And unlike all that other non-wool
product I've accumulated over the years, the Icebreaker stuff actually
doesn't smell after you sweat through it, and it dries in no time. I
wore a polo icebreaker to work today on the commute, and didn't have
time to shower once there, so I threw on some khakis and kept on the
polo. Temperatures got up to 95 w/ 78% humidity, so it got wet again
on the ride home, and is miraculously dry again.

That having been said, I am very much a recent and dedicated convert
to the MUSA seersucker, w/o anything underneath. I offer this mea
culpa in the spirit of the recent grande bois thread. Having
previously expressed doubts here about its efficacy in humid climes
beyond offering a lighter suit color, I have to say that the grey-
striped MUSA seersucker shirt is now one of my favorite articles of
clothing, for biking and otherwise. Yes, it gets damp, and then it
dries on the downhill. And the enclosed MUSA pamphlet offers
instructions for upping the sun block quotient to 35 for up to 25
washes.

It depends a fair bit on the tire size, doesn't it? If you go from a
