[RBW] Re: Hypothetical Bombadil trade and observations.
A tire that comes to mind (though I haven't tried it) for longer rides where I am carrying my panniers to go camping, but only on groomed mixed terrain, dirt roads etc. is the 650B 42mm Grand Bois Hetre. And there is nothing like it in 700C. I'd throw some of those on the Bomba and see how that works for your intended purpose. Given your requirements, the Hetre sounds like the perfect tire, which means sticking with 650B. :) Gernot On Feb 12, 10:22 am, jinxed hbcl...@yahoo.com wrote: On Feb 11, 7:25 pm, Earl Grey earlg...@gmail.com wrote: Personally, I like my bikes versatile, and I'd rather have two versatile bikes that are too similar then two different bikes that are limited in their versatility but occupy different niches. Sure my full suspension would, but it was a dog on anything paved. In what way do you think a 700c Romulus would serve you better than a Bomba for longer rides where I am carrying my panniers to go camping, but only on groomed mixed terrain, dirt roads etc.? Do you think it would be faster/more responsive? Do you just want it to feel more different? This is the $2000 question. As far as something like a Rom, Ram, or Hillborne serving better for packed camping use, I dont think they would or would not. I think they would all do equally great. The only advantage I see a 700c set up giving me over the Bombadil would be on paved century rides. How are your Bleriot and Bomba set up now, and what are you thinking of putting on the Bomba to distinguish them? My Bleriot is a fairly standard Riv 9spd drive train Sugino XD's/105, moustache bars, rear rack and fatty rumpkin tires. The Bombadil is set up with basically a full modern xt mountain group, bullmoose bars, and v-brakes. I have the 2.0 quasi-moto pacenti tires on it. My thought would be to rebuild the Bombadil with something like a noodle bar, more roadish gearing, and a narrower smoother tire like a Marathon or Grand Bois. Maybe move the rack over to it. I think this would be a great setup although very similar to the Bleriot, so would it be better suited on a 700c platform? Probably splitting hairs. No doubt I love the raw paint, and double tube, but honestly if we're talking looks I could blindly pick any model they make. [RBW] Hunqapillar paint scheme
It was mentioned in the pre-sale .pdf, and shown using a Bombadil along with the proposed graphics. It sounded familiar, and looking at RR42, pg. 58 reminded me why; it's a similar scheme used on Mark's cross bike. Given the description, Mark's bike may be a closer match to the future Hunq', and I for one am very happy. Coincidentally, the original paint on my '83 Trek 850 is close, and the bike itself may be considered a distant relative. (Father? Great Uncle? Genetic Mutation?) Although the base color is black, the dark red head-tube and seat-tube panel make for a really nice overall look. Grey/Red sounds even better. If I can keep it in the stable long enough, I'll take a family photo when my 62 Hunqapillar shows up. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Tioga Surefoot Maintenance ?'s
Hello All, I've had the Tioga Surefoot pedals on my quickbeam for about 1250 miles now, and I've noticed that they aren't spiining super - smooth anymore. The drive side pedal is decent, as it spins relatively nicely but could be better, but the non - drive pedal will only go around a few times with a hard flick and makes a metal - on - metal grinding noise. I also noticed some play in the pedals on the axle, with again the non - drive being worse than the drive - side. When I remove the dustcaps, the non - drive has a great deal of lateral movement, whereas the drive has hardly any. Is this normal, and if not, how can it be fixed? Any tips or links to references on general pedal maintenance would be appreciated, thanks. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Bianchi San Jose w/ SA S3X FOR SALE
It rides really well. The third gear is direct drive, second is a 25% reduction and first gear is a 37.5% reduction. I have the low range gears set at 39/18. High range is a 42/15. Low range works really well for hilly terrain and offroad. High range is fantastic for flats. There is a bit of lag b/t pushing the cranks forward and backpedal but there has been more unnecessary hype about this than is warranted IMO. Having put a few miles on this thing and other 'true' fixies, I kind of like the lag b/c it sort of dampens the 'jolt' (for lack of a better adjective) b/t forward and backpedal. Got sprayed with slush from two passing cars, found out that bike lights work really well when everything is white, got the bike really sideways...twice, noticed there were not may cars on the road, the mudflap ended up acting like a snow plow much of the way, had a lot of fun, ended up looking like this. http://www.flickr.com/photos/16951...@n08/4352155983/ The carpet next to my desk has a strange damp spot on it now. [RBW] Re: Variation on the Safety Swerve, the Saddlebag Jostle
Another addition to this is a safety triangle that's mounted so as to allow it to flop around a bit. You have to play with this to make it work but the idea is moving things attract attention better than stationary things. I have a triangle (size L from Riv) mounted on my saddlebag so the bottom is loose it can flap around a bit. Combine that with a swerve or jostle to improve your visibility. Got the idea from someone who mounted her triangle on a trunk bag but just in the center, so it sort of rocks back'n'forth. You can't be too visible out there. Second on the mirror. Tour buses have the engine in the back, don't go very fast, can sneak up on you. If you check traffic behind you, you've got time to plan before something surprises you. If you're on a narrow 2 lane road with 2 trucks approaching one another, guess who's the odd one out? My mirror has helped me avoid a lot of potentially dangerous situations. dougP On Feb 12, 7:41 am, Mojo gjtra...@yahoo.com wrote: RR42 page 19, Grant writes of the Safety Swerve: a bit of a wiggle as cars are approaching from behind. I have a refinement of this. I monitor approaching car behavior in my helmet mirror. If they are beginning a shift to the left to give me space, no action needed. If they are holding their line that will pass very close to me, or if we are both approaching a dangerous portion of the road, say the topping of a hill or a narrowing portion of the road, I do my Saddlebag Jostle. I simply stand, but hold my body vertical and let the bike swing side to side. The wagging saddlebag nearly always earns me a bit of road space. After decades of not using a mirror because they were too dorky, my riding has been transformed by my mirror. Being able to monitor approaching traffic gives me some forecast of impending passes and has diminished the scary surprises coming up from behind. Also, back to the article on page 19, I would never spit towards a car. I understand what Grant meant, but if you miss-time your spit just a bit, it is a big insult and potentially a big confrontation. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
