These brakes work with 45mm fenders AND 32 tires. That's what I have
on my Salsa Cassaroll, the proto machine for the proto brakes. I love
these things. They keep on stopping in relation to lever force vs
hitting a flexing point were the force just stays the same no matter
how hard you pull. I am biased, duh, but this is a product I am really
proud of.

[RBW] Re: grepsalot's Tour

2010-04-26 Thread happyriding
Thanks, Mike! I spent the last few days reading her trip report.
What a grand adventure! Here are some of my favorite quotes:

--

I met one rollerblader this morning on a bike path in Portland, ME who
yelled to me, Did you leave anything at home?

--

Before we go any further, I should tell you, dear reader, about how I
have no sense of direction. None. Besides that, I routinely miss
signs. This means that you can count on lots of extraneous adventures;
I can pretty much guarantee getting lost at least once every day.

--

Fewer hills, but some of them were mighty big. I think I walked up 3
of them. But as Moni Neville said once on the phred list, I never met
a hill I couldn't walk.

--

I was lucky to find this campground as there were no other
accommodations anywhere near. It's actually a golf course. Look at the
net right behind the table in the picture. The first tee is right
behind me. I am hoping I don't get brained by a ball.

--

I should have titled this journal, Creeping across America in small
increments. But I'm training on the road. At least that's my excuse
for now.

--

There was some hairy riding this morning. Fast rush-hour traffic on 2-
lane roads with no shoulders, curves and hills. On some of the steeper
hills there was no room to wobble so I walked in the ditch with the
bike on the edge of the often broken white line area. I was glad to
get out of that area.

--

Today was a challenge. It was pouring cold rain as I headed down the
road. About 5 miles into the ride a highway sign said I was riding
East, and as we know, I'm supposed to be headed West.

--

But what a struggle! The terrain was easy - up and down small hills -
but my legs simply would not work today. I had to walk even the
smallest inclines and even pedalling down the other side was
difficult. Walking was hard, too. What on earth was happening? Food,
Gatorade, GU and electrolytes did not fix it. Finally, around the 10
mile mark my legs kicked in a bit, but not at their usual strength. It
wasn't until I got into a hotel room that it dawned on me that the
problem was probably that I'd been riding for 7 days and needed a rest
day. So I won't be riding tomorrow.

--

You will notice that I only did 13 miles today, but even that was an
accomplishment. Over the winter I had read CrazyGuy journals about the
killer hills in the stretch from Oxford through Bigelow Hollow State
Park and beyond, but truly, I had no idea. The hills were steep and
they were long and they were relentless and of course I walked them.
Walk 10 steps, rest, try to prevent the bike from rolling back down,
repeat. There were false tops to some of the hills, where just as I
thought I'd got there, the road would curve and there was another top,
and later, maybe another. When I actually got to the top there would
be a 1 to 2 mile descent, but I was so shakey I'd have to rest before
I felt competent to hurl myself down the hill.

--

I had to quit at 24 miles because my left cleat was not engaging with
the pedal and I had some foot slips and near spills because of it.
Fortunately, I had an extra set of Speedplay Frog cleats. I think that
walking up those hills finally killed that cleat, although they were 6
years old and quite worn down.

--

It was another exhausting day of hiking up long steep hills (1421 feet
total ascent) that I couldn't ride and rocketing down the other side.

--

I went into the police station at Sheffield to ask a question about
the map. The officer I spoke with used to be a racing cyclist but
can't ride now because he has knee problems. But here's the most
amazing thing I learned today. He will be having a procedure where
they grind up rooster combs, mix it with something, and inject it into
the knee. What?! This seemed so far out that I had to Google it, but
turns out it's an actual procedure. How did someone come to think this
up? Let's see - my patient's got bad knees and I've got this rooster
out there doing not much of anything, so...

--

Not far from Sand Hill Park and still in the wind farm area is the
Erie Shores Wind Farm Interpretive Centre. I stopped to see what I
could learn. The wind turbine pictured above is just across the road
and you can go over there and pet it if you want.

--

(At one town, Judy phoned up a classmate that she hadn't seen in 53
years and was able to locate here. They spent the whole day chatting
and Judy spent the night at her house.)

As soon as I arrived in Big Sandy I went into the bar, which was the
only establishment in town that was open. A highschool friend named
Grace once lived here and I had hoped to connect with her. Everyone in
the bar of a certain age knew her, but sadly she died 2 or 3 years
ago.

--

As you can see in the picture, the shoulder is lovely as you start out
from Fort Benton, but it disappears completely 16 miles from Great
Falls. Moreover, you can't ride on the white line because there are
clumps of chipseal on it. So the only place to ride on this narrow,

Re: [RBW] Re: Pletscher Rear Rack

2010-04-26 Thread Ken Freeman
If you do buy a Pletscher, test whether it can hold your back back by
filling it with a representative amount of old books and go out for a ride.
I recall from the '70s it can take a bunch of bungee to hold a significant
load onto a Pletscher. If it can't handle them, get something else before
trusting your computer to a rack.

Can you stand to use a laptop messenger bag, instead? Your back is likely
to be more secure.

I'll be contrarian. It's Rivendell's call, and if they feel the need
to re-do the bike before selling it, then they should. While from the
photo, the bike looks nice, if Grant is not comfortable selling it
like that, he shouldn't be pressured into doing so.

In 20 years, is someone going to look at that bike and see hey, a
cool concept from Rivendell or what was Grant thinking?

Sort of reminds me of the Leica M5. Yes, a way to put a meter in a
Leica M model. But the end result looked like something that wasn't
typical Leica.

[RBW] nitto big rack question

2010-04-26 Thread happyriding
Hi,

It seems to me that the horse shoe shaped portion that juts upward on
the seat stay end of the rack would just get in the way when trying to
strap things onto the rack. For instance, my Therm-a-Rest mattress is
25 inches wide. If I strapped it onto the rack, it would protrude 10
inches off the back. It seems to me that if the upward jutting
horseshoe portion wasn't there, I could slide the mattress all the way
up against the seat stays so that less of the mattress protruded off
the end of the rack. Why was the rack designed that way?

Has anyone toured with the Nitto Big Rack? What did you think of it?

Thanks.

Many front racks incorporate similar features.

They serve two functions. First, they are a handy place to strap
things. Second, they stop things on top of the rack from falling on
to, and interefering with, the front brake.

[RBW] Re: nitto big rack question

2010-04-26 Thread JoelMatthews
The loop does not have as much practical value when using the rack on
the back of the bike as the struts provide support and protect the
rear brake. If you are lucky enough to have a bike with rack mount
studs on top of the fork crown, it would not be necessary up front,
either.

I think Ray is correct about lateral bracing. Most front racks I have
seen without the loop are rated lower for weight than those that have
one.

I've always been a fly-fisherman. Last summer, I took a week-long

[RBW] Re: nitto big rack question

2010-04-26 Thread Darin G.
I have a big rack on my Sam which supports my commuting panniers
nicely. I haven't toured with it yet, but it would easily fit one of
the newer therma-rest pads. The NeoAir for example is 4 X 9 packed
and could go in a pannier or sit on top. A down sleeping bag in a
waterproof stuff sack would sit up their easily as well. I have
already moved in this direction for backpacking gear to save weight
and space as a down sleeping bag packs down to about the size of a
loaf of bread and I can fit both the mattress and the pad in the
sleeping bag compartment of my pack and use the pad loops to hold my
tent (which is usually wet) on the outside of the pack. No one wants
to go spend their fun tickets on gear when they have a perfectly
suitable mattress and sleeping bag that has served them well, but the
stuff is out there.

If the horseshoe continues to perplex look at a Bruce Gordon rack. No

Believe you are referring to the B Gordon High Mount rack:

BG does some interesting things with that rack. It attached both at
the drop out and mid fork mount. It also sets further back on the
fork than most front racks. For the right bike, it is a great design.

Hard to set up, especially since I used the Mavic crank, but it almost gets
every gear I want. Anyway, I'm happy to add this Heron road photo, since we
don't see enough of that model. I want to thank Todd Kuzma for being really
helpful to me when he sold the frame to me in late 2007. I've been using the
bike in various shifting modes (road thumbies for example) for a about a year
and a half, and in mid-09, Nashbar was closing out their Ultegra 10 speed
triple brifters for $140, so I couldn't resist.

To get an extreme gear on the low end and not rub the chain on the high end, I
sometimes have to turn the downtube barrel adjuster while riding. It actually
kind of addresses the problem. It's like having some trim on your trim-lacking
Shimano front brifters.

[RBW] Re: Coth tape; was: Daughter's New Whip

2010-04-26 Thread wile
I wrap from the ends, first cork, then cloth. The cork makes it all
the way to the top of the bar, several inches from the stem. One roll
of cloth makes it just several inches past the brake lever because of
the increased diameter, so I use two rolls of cloth on each side (ends
up 1.5 with pieces left over). I start the second roll just
overlapping with the first and make one full revolution before
continuing up the bar. Twine at the end and shellac the whole thing.
I know two rolls of cloth on each side seems excessive, but I am so
happy with the looks and comfort and I think it should last a long
time.

I start on the top of the bar and wrap toward the ends, make a neat
tuck, plug it with a wine cork, and shellac the whole thing. Slap a
new coat on every year or so and it doesn't unravel - much more
durable than cork wrap. And beats cork in the beausage department
every time.

I start at the center of the bar and at the bar end and wrap to the
brake hood. Then I tuck everything in under the hood and it stays.

I know it's cheating but it seems to work pretty well.

[RBW] Re: Hobbies that compliment your Rivendell lifestyle

2010-04-26 Thread Darin G.
This post has me thinking about guitars, fly fishing, and cycling.
Long before I bought a Riv I acquired a taste for woody Martin guitars
and and favored my Winston traditional trout rod over my Sage
artillery pieces. My fly boxes are adorned with modern bead-headed
and foam flies (trout bling), but I prefer to tie furry little
traditional bugs. 80% of the trout I catch fall for traditional
nymphs and dries. In a way, those things opened me up to owning a
Rivendell and not the other way around.

That said, I wouldn't trade my gore-tex waders for old rubber chest
waders. I play a very nice Taylor guitar when I have to plug in or
want it to be loud and bright. I will fish my fast action fly rods
when the situation demands--i.e. when casting heavy streamers to
steelhead or big trout in big water, but just because I can cast 70
feet of shooting head with this gear doesn't mean I love doing it, nor
does it bring me more pleasure than a well placed thirty foot cast
that drops a size 18 Adams into a slot six inches wide and three feet
long. The point, I suppose, is to be objective about new technology
and its so called advantages. Sometimes the advantages are real, but
often its just hype to get you to buy another version of something you
already have or an attempt to push everyone to the extreme edge of
their hobby or sport.

Do enjoy that new bamboo rod--I'm sure its a lovely reed. What are
the specifics of the rod (wt., length) and what reel did you put on
it?

And noting the other posts--I use a fountain pen. I think gardening
counts and I don't know why something as practical as sewing wouldn't
count as well.

Oh, I think it counts. I think they both count utterly. Any hobby that
 centers around a more calorie-burning, sustainable, self-sufficient,
fun-yet-useful activity fits the Rivendell philosophy as I understand it.

4 inches x 9 inches? How wide and long is it when it is inflated?

A down sleeping bag in a
waterproof stuff sack would sit up their easily as well.  I have
already moved in this direction for backpacking gear to save weight
and space as a down sleeping bag packs down to about the size of a
 loaf of bread

In my opinion, down is only appropriate for snowy climates. If you
get down wet, it won't work anymore. The first time you ever try to
wash and then dry a down sleeping bag or jacket, you will realize the
world of hurt you will be in if you get one wet. They take longer
than a week to dry out.

If the horseshoe continues to perplex look at a Bruce Gordon rack.  No

[RBW] Speed Up My Sam

2010-04-26 Thread Darin G.
Alright, this will probably sound un-Rivish,...please don't pick my
bones over. I'm new to this type of bicycle.

I need my commuter/tourer Sam to go faster, if possible. I have a
slate of century rides and a 200 km brevet lined up for the summer and
I'm being dropped by my riding companions who are significantly less
fit and heavier than I am, but are riding zippy road bikes (including
my old Roubaix). I'm about 1.5 to 3 mph slower over the same course
than I was on road bike. I've never been a racer but I really don't
want my centuries to take 7 hours and I don't think I can make up the
difference with pure horsepower. I'm planning on a second bike to
take on this duty, but that will be at least a year away.

So, where would this group look to speed up my Sam? Wheels? Tires?
I'm riding 36 spoke wheels with Jack Brown Blues. And if it just
can't be done, tell me so and I'll practice smelling the flowers until
I can come up with the appropriate tool for the described job.

Don't know if it'll give you ~2mph , but I'd ditch the JB Blues. Either go
with Greens, or better yet Grand Bois Cypres 31s. Those are the nicest
rolling tires I even ever had the privilege of using. I found them too
delicate for day in and day out use, but I think they would shine on the

If it won't compromise comfort over distance, maybe lower your bars 1-2 cm
from where they are as well. Speaking of bars, maybe go narrower to get a
little bit less drag.

You mentioned 36 spoke, but what kind of rim? I'd recommend 28 hole

Cypres... you'd be set (maybe).

Well that's a pretty heavy rim tire combo. Remember it is the
wheels you have to accelerate, so weight taken off there will yield
the most benefit. I'd consider a second set of wheels. If you can
afford it White Hubs, Open Pro rims, 32 spokes with some Michelin 25mm
tires. That will help you accelerate when you need to stay with the
group, and will be zippier going uphill, which is where you are
probably loosing the pace. Ride with your current wheels every day

[RBW] Re: nitto big rack question

2010-04-26 Thread Darin G.
The NeoAir inflated is 72 X 20.

Agreed that the down sleeping bag is worthless when wet which is why a
waterproof stuff-sack is mandatory. I've backpacked, sea kayaked,
biked and river rafted in miserable wet weather in the Rockies and
Alaska, and never had a problem. That said you do need to be
thoughtful about packing it and keeping it dry and you need a very
high degree of confidence in your tent. A down sleeping bag will also
last much longer than a comparable synthetic (I put the lifespan of a
heavily used synthetic at around 5 years, even if kept in a storage
bag). For me the comfort and weight savings are worth it. Others
reasonably reach a different conclusion. If you're going to be driven
to distraction by the thought of a down bag getting wet go with the
synthetic.

Wheels are definitely a good place to start. Even Mavic Aksium Wheelsets which
run around $250 can give you a lighter / slightly aero wheel.

Put some 25mm lightweight tires on them, and only use them on your fast rides.

You will likely feel the difference, especially if there is a lot of climbing
involved.

Can you post the full spec of your bike? Hard to suggest when you have no other
info...

[RBW] horseshoe rackthing's function

2010-04-26 Thread Grant Petersen
It prevents a load from the center wire of a canti- or centerpull brake,
mainly. Also helps locate the load on the platform, so it doesn't scoot
into or above the brake itself, so you can work on the brake on a loaded
bike. Often used as a lash-point, as someone pointed out. You can cut it off
(would prolly regret it at some point) an soft-cap the jutting-up stumps
with something.

A sleeping pad is soft and can fold at the 'shoe, and shoot upward...or ukin
hang it out rearward, since it's too light to cause a problem if it sticks
way out. Just thoughts and a fact or two.
I think all rear racks have some sort of abutment there.

[RBW] Re: silvers v. dura-ace

2010-04-26 Thread Joe Bernard
In my curved-bar days, I preferred both. Silver friction front, DA
index rear. I tried Silver friction on the rear for a while.
Definitely smooth and silent, but I was never able to warm up to
friction on the rear, especially when shifting over two or three cogs
at a time. I hate missed shifts, and I don't have the patience to
manually perfect a perfect shift that can easily be done with accurate
clicks. If that makes me lazy, well..my average speed would back that
up.

On Apr 25, 7:22 pm, PATRICK MOORE bertin...@gmail.com wrote:
The Silvers shift better than any friction shifter, bar end, trigger or down
tube, that I have ever used, including Retrofriction downtubers. My only
complaint with the long levers is that they end up exactly at the level of
my top-tube-mounted pump, but that's not their fault.

Busted. All of the above, except for guitar, and the fact that fly
fishing in the lower Sonoran desert scrub doesn't make much sense
right now. I make my flies, too, when I live near water. Someday,

bikes to fish and photograph and eat, etc. I used to have a saddlebag
spray-painted white to reflect sun, to keep things from cooking too

Phoenix, which is very urban in a suburban way.

Now, these aren't hobbies, folks, theses are just ways to be alive.
Some of many. I also like to learn the names and ways of flowers,
rocks, and the other critters I amuse as I blunder through. Visual and
Mental Astronomy. I am reviving an old interest in what some call
traditional crafts/bushcraft/wildcraft/woodscraft. Making cordage.

If the Roadeo had rack mounts I'd consider it, at least for a rear

or something. As is, waiting to see if the Amos comes to be as the
Roadeo is some serious cheddar for me right now.

Don't know if it'll give you ~2mph , but I'd ditch the JB Blues.  Either go
with Greens, or better yet Grand Bois Cypres 31s.  Those are the nicest
rolling tires I even ever had the privilege of using.  I found them too
delicate for day in and day out use, but I think they would shine on the
 events you mentioned.

If it won't compromise comfort over distance, maybe lower your bars 1-2 cm
from where they are as well.  Speaking of bars, maybe go narrower to get a
 little bit less drag.

You mentioned 36 spoke, but what kind of rim?  I'd recommend 28 hole Velocity
Aeroheads if you really want to go all out.  Those plus the Cypres... you'd
 be set (maybe).

 Have fun!

A sleeping pad is soft and can fold at the 'shoe, and shoot upward...or ukin
hang it out rearward, since it's too light to cause a problem if it sticks
way out. Just thoughts and a fact or two.
I think all rear racks have some sort of abutment there.

[RBW] Re: Speed Up My Sam

2010-04-26 Thread RoadieRyan
Darin

I will preface this by saying I am fortunate to have two bikes; a
Steel bike with 36h Rims/35c Pasela's racks front and rear etc for
comfort riding and a Cannondale R800 stripped down for faster rides
but before I picked up my steel ride I tired to make my R800 an all
rounder with mixed results.

If I was in your shoes with only the one bike for the near term and
wanting to go faster, I would think about the following for the event
rides:

-ditch the rear rack
-swap the Sugino for compact 50/34 double, maybe a square taper FSA
Vero or even a Campy Veloce. That would drop weight and give you some
taller gears
-Go with the Mavic Aksium's as the racy wheelset. I have them on my
go fast bike and even for a Clydesdale like me they work fine and feel
zippy paired with the 700/25c tire of your choice (I use Continental
gatorskins)
- Save for the Roadeo or AMOS/San Marcos

My steel bike, a Handsome Devil, is set up very much like your Sam and
I am easily a couple miles and hour faster on the go fast bike over
the same course. Although to be honest when I am riding the Handsome
Devil its not about going fast ;-)

Good luck

Ryan

Pedaling faster has always sped me up... ;^)

Actually, that may be a place to look. If you came back from a typical
road gearing setup, it may just be that you are in lower gears than what
your body remembers. The muscle memory in your legs, which may have been
cultivated by a few years at X cadence in gear Y - is now all skewed.
Your legs want to chunk along at what they are used to, but that won't move
you along at the same speed.

I've noticed that even though both bikes feel good, it sometimes takes a
ride or two before I feel quick on the Hilsen or Quickbeam. There's just
this moment of yeah! when the micro adjustment of position and cadence
makes everything feel locked in. You might play around a little with saddle
setback, bar height. I'd be careful, not do it before a big, big ride and
take copious notes so you can get back where you started.

One of the things I'll try periodically for a day is to stay in one or two
gears lower (larger sprocket on the cog) than what feels right. I then
try to keep the same speed at the resulting higher cadence. That tends to
reawaken the low pressure, high cadence approach for me. I call these my
Spinny rides.

What kind of terrain are you riding? Where are you being dropped?

And, your sure your riding buddies just didn't dial down your rear brake so
it's rubbing on the rim?

If you are going to swap gear, I'd try tires before wheels.

Other than chopping mortices it's generally peaceful work with an

2010-04-26 Thread Mojo
Interesting replies. For me, cycling has been part of an aerobic
outdoors lifestyle that included running, hiking, climbing, and cross-
country skiing. Clean oxygen-fed sport as XCZone.tv has called it. I
know longer do the running or climbing. But the Riv/BOB bent was a
decision to keep the gear less complicated and more sane, and less
expensive. I think I have lost track of that at times as I have
fiddled with fenders and racks and lighting, and god-forbid, twine. I
have purposely decided to get back to keeping it simple and letting
the experience be the hobby instead of the gear. So for me, hobbies
that compliment my Riv lifestyle are less gear purchase and play, and
more riding, hiking, and skiing.

[RBW] Re: Hobbies that compliment your Rivendell lifestyle

2010-04-26 Thread kps

hey seth,

funny, i hadn't thought about grant's comment that seven is a good
number of bikes. g
i guess i said 'more than i'm supposed to have' because of an earlier
thread i ran across a few days ago (a thread from back in 2007, i
think) where beth h. was mentioning that it's more rare than not for
females to have more than one bike, and when they have a bike, they
are mostly just happy to ride it and 1. don't tinker with it or 2. buy
more bikes. i'd say it's safe to say that i am just outside that
particular box, that's all. ;-)

there's no right or wrong, obviously, and the actual riding's the best
part of all. i just happen to like bikes and have more than one (or
two).

i really do appreciate everyone on this list, and the fact that
regardless of our particular passions, we all have 'em, and we all
seem to appreciate things that work well, are well-built and LAST.

-k

I don't recall Grant's 'How many bikes do you need' being
gender-specific so I'd say you're getting close to the right number of
 bikes. :)

[RBW] Re: Speed Up My Sam

2010-04-26 Thread Michael_S
haven't you heard it's not the bike it's the motor! And those fancy
lycra togs will make you look fast too. hehe.

I would 2nd the other notes... tires and wheels are biggest factor in
my opinion, but I'd use some fast 28-30's.. 25's are too skinny!

other then that... take off excess weight... racks, bags, etc. helps
aerodynamics too.

[RBW] Homer w/ Greens or Homer w/ Blues (was Speed Up Sam)

2010-04-26 Thread James Warren

I know experiences vary, but I gotta point out that I equallylove the ride of Homer (AHH) with JB Blues or JB Greens. Can't tell a difference. Amazingly good either way.

Either go with Greens, or better yet Grand Bois Cypres 31s. Those are the nicest rolling tires I even ever had the privilege of using. I found them too delicate for day in and day out use, but I think they would shine on the events you mentioned. If it won't compromise comfort over distance, maybe lower your bars 1-2 cm from where they are as well. Speaking of bars, maybe go narrower to get a little bit less drag. You mentioned 36 spoke, but what kind of rim? I'd recommend 28 hole Velocity Aeroheads if you really want to go all out. Those plus the Cypres... you'd be set (maybe).Have fun!

Re: [RBW] Re: Got my Saluki!

2010-04-26 Thread James Warren

It would be neat if Saluki and AHH were seasonal things. At certain times of the year or every couple years or whatever, the bike sold by Rivendell would be the Saluki with Saluki decals and that butterscotch. And then after a while, the company would stop selling the Saluki, but sell theAHH in the great original blue, but it would be the same bike functionally. And then after a while, it would change back to the Saluki again...and so on.

Yeah - I couldn't tell a difference either - similar tire life,
similar puncture resistance, equally fun to ride.

[RBW] Re: Hobbies that compliment your Rivendell lifestyle

I too use a Leica M and shoot black and white film. I've been shooting
since I was about 17 and with a Leica for the last 20+ years.

Well, I started this before I'd heard of Rivendell but I see
woodworking with antique, hand-powered tools to be complimentary.
Other than chopping mortices it's generally peaceful work with an
 unrushed pace.

[RBW] hiawatha cyclery print

2010-04-26 Thread Seth Vidal
I assume this is quasi on topic since I found out about the print
here. I got my print from Hiawatha back from the framers today:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/skvidal/4556326860/

I think it came out really nicely with the green frame.

Thanks Jim!
