[RBW] Re: Grip King/ MKS Lambda pedal spikes
I tried it without a drill. Just screwed them in gently and straight (enough), and once they took hold, then I applied stronger pressure on the socket wrench. About a 6 months and 1500 commute miles later, I've still got 7 of the 8 studs in there. The missing one appears to have been knocked off by a pedal strike, judging by the deep scrapes on the outer edge where the stud is missing. [RBW] Re: Grip King/ MKS Lambda pedal spikes
For those who like metric, I used a 3.5mm drill bit to drill out the holes in my pedals. I didn't have any spikes, but I had a bag of 4mm stainless steel set screws. Didn't bother tapping the holes. I just screwed the set scews in with an allen wrench, backing them out a bit when it felt like they were binding, before screwing them the rest of the way in. Worked great! I agree with David, getting them started straight is key. - Zach On May 3, 5:23 pm, carnerda...@bellsouth.net carnerda...@bellsouth.net wrote: I used a 7/64 bit (half way between the 3/32 and 1/8 recommended by RBW. [RBW] Re: a hh poem
Chapeau! thanks that was a great read On May 3, 1:43 pm, Marty mgie...@mac.com wrote: Forgive the long-ish post to follow. I wrote this one years ago (or so it seems) when the stand-alone AHH website was up and there was a $20 credit in the offing. There were a number of good poems crafted for the site. Not sure what happened to the site or the other poems. I'm no poet, but was inspired by a beautiful bike and the company behind it. FWIW, I give you: The Resurrection of A. Homer Hilsen There it was, there it sat. Bars akimbo, tires flat. Cluster missing, saddle worn. Dangling hemp-wrap. Dusty. Torn. Rubbed the down-tube, read the name: A. Homer Hilsen – of Rivendell fame. I knelt to worship and wondered why. Lost, or stolen? Left to die? Who would leave it? Could I? Could You? I asked around, nobody knew. I felt linked like a chain to its ultimate fate, the local bike shop was open ‘till eight… They told me the story of a man dressed in wool. He lived in the country, his glass always half full. The bike was his passion, his comfort, his dream. Fittings for Mark’s rack, lugs filled with cream. But no one had seen him, at least for a while. The man had moved on. My lips cracked a small smile. I asked the police what the policy was. They showed me the poster: Auction by Fuzz. I showed up quite early, on the day of the deal. Misty and quiet, the sky painted like steel. I noticed the Hilsen being eyed by a punk, mixed in with the lawnmowers, car parts and junk. He grabbed a brake lever and gave it a tug, Spat on a pedal, then moved on with a shrug. The auction moved slowly, through toilets and tools, Something for everyone: the dealers, the fools. And then it was up there, wheeled up by a cop. The pads squealed on the front rim. It came to a stop. The bidding began with the auctioneers’ pitch: “A handsome blue bike for the not quite so rich!” It was me and the punk, and a man I could see who was standing alone near a lone Redwood tree. It had to be mine. I just had to win. To let Homer go home without me was a sin! The punk shrugged again when three figures were spoke. Fished through his pockets, confirmed he was broke. I looked near the tree, heard the faint ping of a bell, The auctioneer paused, raised the gavel. It fell. “It’s mine! Can’t believe it!” My grin ear to ear. I cashed out in seconds, lost a fight with a tear. I wheeled Hilsen homeward and vowed to be kinder. Put him up on my work stand and loosened the binder. I thought about fate, how I won, how I got’m. Flipped the frame in the stand to examine the bottom. As soon as the upside was more downside than most, A small rolled up paper fluttered out from the post: “I’m happy you own me, the pleasure’s all mine. That punk would’ve stripped me and sold me for wine.” “Now we can share them, those days on the road. Losing all count of the friendships we sowed.” “You see, I’m attracted to people like you; People who dream of a journey or two.” A.H.H. I’m sure when I’m older, my legs tired of turning, I’ll think of this day; of the joy and the yearning. I’ll pass it along to a like-minded good soul; dusty and weathered, but ready to roll. The bike will live on, with new stories to tell; new owner, new road, and the faint ping of a bell. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: is this confusing or am i missing something? Waterford Hillbornes?
I don't get the two top tube thing. I ride the 56 Sam and putting two top tubes on it seems like it would take an elegant design and turn it into a five-legged chair. I understand the strength argument, just can't see why it would be necessary. This bike's already pretty stout. I also wonder why Rivendell would dilute the successful brand associated with the Sam with essentially three different bikes--the original canti version, the side-pull version, and a mutant Samapillar. Re: [RBW] Re: is this confusing or am i missing something? Waterford Hillbornes?
i dunno.. i bought an orange cantisam recently.. if i'd had the option of another top tube for $250 more i'd have taken it.. of course, i probably wouldn't have subsequently picked up a used Bombadil frame.. seems to me that there is a risk of blurring the lines between a Sam and a Bomba, but maybe that's just me... actually, i probably would have bought both anyways - the Bomba is a size down, so better suited for mountain biking.. the Sam is a great fit for road/touring, but a wee bit too big for me for off-road. best, andrew On May 4, 2010, at 8:21 AM, Darin G. wrote: I don't get the two top tube thing. [RBW] Re: is this confusing or am i missing something? Waterford Hillbornes?
Grant's been talking about the double top tube Sam for a while. I don't think you'll have a problem of it blurring the lines with a bombadil--it'll still be made out of lighter tubing, and still have country bike clearances and geometry. They might look similar, but in the grand scheme of things, rivendells have never been diverse in their aesthetics, have they? The idea of a double-top tube Sam is growing on me, for sure. I think i've been watching too much of those videos with the Hunqa-protos, but the truth is the clearances and stoutness of the hunqa or bomba would be overkill for the type of riding i do. A DTT sam would be perfect, though. Especially if it's waterford made. On May 3, 6:01 pm, eflayer eddie.fla...@att.net wrote: just posted to the Riv site. Waterford is building Hillbornes? [RBW] Re: Test rode the 48cm Hunq'a
I have a photo of me standing next to the 48cm, but unfortunately, not riding it. It is definitely a small frame and, aside from the upsloping top-tube and stingy standover clearance, almost exactly the same size as my new custom all-around frame which was designed to replace my 48cm B'stone XO-2. I believe this is Vaughn's bike. Does anyone one know how tall Vaughn is? Johnny, is a 54.5cm top tube on the Hunq'a awfully short for a guy your size for anything but drop bars? Which bars do you plan to use? The 48cm prototype was setup with Bullmoose bars which swept back so much, the effective stem extension was nearly zero (ie. the bar swept back so that the grips were on the same plane as the headset). I found it to be incredibly comfortable but almost a little cramped! With an Albatross bar, I'd probably need an 11cm, maybe even longer. I'll have to give this frame some serious thought. It really is a fantastic value. It would create some duplication in my stable, but maybe that is not a bad thing. Michael The 54 will absolutely be a single top tube. When Keven said that the 54 will be 1.5 cm longer, it did not occur to me to ask if the first prototypes were built 1.5cm too short or if they changed the number from the PDF file on the Riv site to 1.5cm longer. With my PBH of 87, standing over the 58 hunqa prototype with Big Apple 700x50 (not 60s), I could stand flat footed, and could lift the front wheel only about 1 cm. [RBW] Re: Diagonapillar blueprints revealed
Mike I'm a terrible double-replyer, so I'm sorry about that. I just called Keven and he said that the 54 and 58 prototypes were built correctly to the numbers that are currently on the Riv-site. The finals will be longer, so the numbers are changing. The Hunqa numbers claim that the 54 has a 58.4cm effective top tube length, and the final will be really close to 60cm. The 58 claims to have a 60cm effective top tube length and the final will be a 62 or so. Re: [RBW] Re: Diagonapillar blueprints revealed
That is roughly how my 60 Bombadil fits me, although I believe that with the Marathon Supreme 700x50 I actually get about 1 inch. (I ride a 61 AHH). Still, when I straddle the bike I can feel the top tube right in there. I get the extra lift by pushing hard against my bones just like Grant states you should. I believe my PBH is 89 or 90. I did think the frame was too large for me initially, even though Keven had sized me personally. I went back to RBW with the idea that they had made a mistake, rode the 56 Bombadil and felt the cockpit too constrained. I took my 60 back home, ended up getting the most comfortable fit with the shorter Drop Stem and 48 Noodle bars and love it. I do wish the top tube was a little lower, for extra clearing but so far it hasn't been an issue other than snagging the rear brake cable when I straddle the bike. I will go mountain biking again this weekend on my first S24O. I've gotten used to feeling the top tube when riding it on the road and am going to try a pair of Big Apples 700x60 to see how they compare to the Supremes. I love riding the bike with the Marathon Extreme 700x40 and for real mountain biking, I have a set of Specialized El Capitan 29x2.2 front and 2.0 rear. It will be interesting to compare mountain biking handling between the Specialized and the Extremes. Perhaps the 58 Hunqa would give me a bit of extra clearance, but so far it's not enough reason to sell the Bombadil frame and get the Hunqa frame. You never know, of course, but I really like how the bike fits me and how I feel when riding it (other than my left foot pain that has nothing to do with the bike). I also like the Bombadil better with less stem / seat post showing... but that's completely subjective. :-) René On Tue, May 4, 2010 at 11:29 AM, William tapebu...@gmail.com wrote: With my PBH of 87, standing over the 58 hunqa prototype with Big Apple 700x50 (not 60s), I could stand flat footed, and could lift the front wheel only about 1 cm. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. The 58 claims to have a 60cm effective top tube length and the final will be a 62 or so. Ugh. What is it with Rivendell's long top tubes? I thought the whole idea was to get people to ride bigger frames? On the bigger frames, the top tubes are so long it forces people to buy a smaller frame with a shorter, better fitting top tube and then jack up the stem to get the bars up there. For instance, look at the 67 AHH. The effective seat tube is about 66.3 center to center and the effective top tube is 65. My preference for that frame would be a 61 cm top tube so that I could employ a proportionally appropriate stem of 12 or 13 cm. It seems to me that because of the long top tubes most of Rivendells frames are not designed for drop bars. With the long top tubes you need bars that come back towards you to provide a comfortable reach. I've read the article on how a shallower seat angle effectively shortens the top tube--but that is only 1 cm per degree. So if you currently ride a bike with a 73 seat tube angle, the Hilsen's 72 seat tube angle will allow you to fit a top tube that is 1 cm longer. But on the other end, a Nitto Noodle handlebar has 9.5 cm of reach which is 1 cm longer than most road bars sold today. The net result is that a shallower seat tube angle effectively reduces the top tube length by 1cm, but the Noodle handlebar is 1 cm longer, so that is a scratch. It would be nice if Rivendell made one model where the top tubes were not so long in the large sizes. Taller riders could then choose bigger frames with less stem sticking out of the frame and use a 12 or 13 cm stem with Nitto Noodle's to get the proper reach to the bars. The geometry of the original Hunqapillar seemed to be moving a bit in that direction. On the other hand, some days I hold up my hand and spread my thumb and forefinger apart 4 centimeters, and I look at how small a distance that is, and I wonder if it is even worth thinking about. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. They are specifically made for kierin racing bikes in Japan. It was left over from my track days, and I found it again while looking for a part to build the AHH. It's kind of a neat design. It's basically a thin metal cuff that is imbedded in clear silicone. You just pull it open and wrap it on the tube. I've had it for years and paid what I thought was a princely sum then of $25. I had an off list inquiry on the same thing so I looked online to check availability. Seems they are a little more proud of them now at $50!! Cheaper than a repair/repaint for sure, but the same protection can be had with some left over bar wrap for almost free. I only chose to put it on because the M bars are just at the right level to smack the TT in a fall. I know a bunch of people are really hot on the 29er off road tip, but I have so far been skeptical. No longer! The trails are a crazy mix out there. You get sections of wide super fast smooth packed dirt that will change to rough solid rock then drop into a tight twisty singletrack with foot tall drop offs and steps. It keeps you on your toes, but is just a blast to ride. We did parts of the loops twice just because they are so fun. My buddies bike is a custom titanium bike that he designed with Daryl Funk of old school FUNK mountain bikes of the late 90ies. The fabrication was done by James at BlackSheep. He took visual inspiration from his 190? Iver Johnson with the trussed top tube, but designed it to be disk brake specific and with clearance to run basically any size wheel and or tire. He has a set of 650b wheels with Neo-Moto 2.1's, and the 700c set that he can run anything from road slicks to monster cross tires on. Not sure but he may have a 26 set built too. Essentially built with a road/touring geometry, but able to go anywhere. [RBW] Thanks! RE: Replace bottom bracket question
Thanks to everyone who replied - a huge help. And thanks for the reminder about the frame saverI was so intent on getting the bike put back together that I almost forgot that item. Bought the stuff and sprayed the frame thoroughly. And will replace the BB.Very Appreciative - JoanThe original bottom bracket (Shimano BB 6500), which of course was removed prior to sending the frame away, has some surface rust. Most of it is near the thicker right hand side. The worst is a one inch square patch that I've tried gently to remove but isn't budging. I'm not much of a mechanic and I'm hoping the collective wisdom here can help me with whether or not I should replace the bottom bracket. Thanks much, JoanI'd just replace the BB with a new one. They aren't expensive, anddoing it now might mean not having to disassemble the cranks foranother 7 years. It's also an excellent time to put some Frame Saveror other rustproofing inside the tubes while it's fresh and unbuilt, might prevent those patches of inner surface rust from recurring..-- Bill ConnellSt. Paul, MN-- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. To post to this group, send email to rbw-owners-bu...@googlegroups.com.To unsubscribe from this group, send email to rbw-owners-bunch+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com.For more options, visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/rbw-owners-bunch?hl=en. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. The double TT Hillbornes seem very similar to the Hunqas, I guess the main difference is tire clearance. I'll be curious to see pictures of both bikes when they're available. --mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Diagonapillar blueprints revealed
I'm pretty stoked about the longer tt. The 58 was the right length, but not enough standover. Plus I didn't want the double tt (I like flexy bikes!). The 54 had the right standover, but wasn't long enough. Voila, now a 54 is back in play for me! The Hunqa numbers claim that the 54 has a 58.4cm effective top tube length, and the final will be really close to 60cm. The 58 claims to have a 60cm effective top tube length and the final will be a 62 or so.
