[RBW] Re: Saluki/Atlantis summer tour advice

2010-05-09 Thread Andrew

I did a similar ride 10 years ago from Seattle to San Francisco. The
hiker biker sites were great and super cheap. The freeways in Oregon
have huge shoulders and are great to ride on. Highway 1 in California
gets a little dicey, had a lot of potholes and can be washed out. It
makes up for it by being beautiful. I would use 35mm tires for the
rough road. Also make sure you have really good rain gear (pants and
jacket) and long fenders with flaps, we had a lot of rain in oregon in
the middle of summer. FYI we averaged between 13-18 mph fully loaded
on the trip, might be helpful for trying to figure out timing. It was
amazing though and I would happily do it again! You are gonna have a
lot of fun.

[RBW] Riding to Kaʻaʻawa on Oahu

2010-05-09 Thread Robert F. Harrison
Today Iʻd planned on riding my Quickbeam out to Haleiwa (about 80 miles I
think) and taking the sag wagon home (all our buses have bike racks so you
can get back from most anywhere). As it turns out I dilly-dallied far too
long this morning and didnʻt leave the house till after 10am. As Iʻd planned
on leaving around 7am this meant a few revisions to the plan.

Instead of the extra 30 miles, I decided Iʻd ride as far as Kaʻaʻawa where
thereʻs a great BBQ place, Uncle Boboʻs, and take the bus back from there.
Kaʻaʻawa is the turnaround for both the Honolulu Century Ride in September
and the Haleiwa Metric Century ride I just did a couple of weeks ago.

I took a video camera with me and stopped every so often to document the
proceedings. Be warned, the sound is generally bad as it was windy and I
discovered I say the work okay altogether too much. :-) The image quality
isnʻt that great either though it seems that as the video is still being
processed it may improve later. If not Iʻll upload a different version to my

[RBW] Re: Opinion on Potential Sale of 1985 Trek 720

2010-05-09 Thread Bob
Will do. I took it for a nice ride yesterday, and it is so
unbelievably cush--a real flexy-flyer.

I worked in a bike shop when I was in college, and we were moving this
model at a pretty brisk pace, even at a pretty stiff price, new. This
was the one that the guy who was riding across the country (or Europe)
would buy.

Cheers,

most part original except for Nitto stem. I think you will work to get
$1000 for it, so I would keep it and enjoy it. I liked my 720. It was
just too small for me. I am loving the Waterford and happy that things
worked out well for me. If you enjoy your 720 then keep it and cherish
 for its comfort and heritage.

I have a 1985 Trek 720. I have upgraded it over the years:  It has
700c Lesnik-built wheels with Phil Wood hubs, Nitto bar and stem,
Sugino cranks, original derailleurs, Brooks B17, Tubus rear and
Rivendell front racks, the works.  It's a nice bike, pristine in every
  way.

The challenge:  We are moving overseas for several years, and I have
10 bicycles need to lighten up. The 720 is by far the nicest bike I
have, which makes it the least useful to me, in that I won't park this
for the day at the Metro, leave it outside of the grocery store (for
very long), ride it in the rain, etc.  My other old Trek is more
seasoned, less valuable, and gets a heck of a lot more use.

What do you think this bike is worth, ballpark?  I know this is
probably dreaming, but I think it would take at least $2500 for me to
part with her. It seems somehow unfair for this bike to hang in my
  basement for much longer.

[RBW] Re: Nitto Mini FrontWald Med BasketShopsack = Perfection

2010-05-09 Thread Bob
Front loads make a lot of sense, and provide a better overall weight
distribution. Back in the day the wisdom was that a front load needed
to be carried as low as possible for stability, but I put some heavy
stuff in front baskets routinely, and have never had a problem with
wobble or any of the promised horrors of a high front load.

On May 8, 1:53 am, SFF jgre...@earthlink.net wrote:

But, after a month of daily commuting I have to say - it does much
more than I expected! I can fit a change of clothes, lunch, mini U-
lock and a book up there no problem - thats all I need for the
commute. On the way home I can stop by the grocery store, record shop
or beverage barn and squeeze it in - no problem.

Tip: I put a little bar tape on the basket where I attach the shopsack
latch. Sometimes on a rough surface you get some clanky noise from the
loose metal to metal attachment point. I also put a foam pad on the
bottom of the basket to eliminate road noise if I'm running a lite
 load.

Maybe someday I'll use that big 'ol Nitto rack on the back of the
bike. Where are those new panniers anyway? Just asking...

I said, thanks, can I have a cup of coffee? She said, That's one!

The only suggestion I can offer the two of you is to shop carefully

cars in NYC's 5 boroughs (source: www.crashstat.org; the combined

[RBW] Re: headset stack height?

2010-05-09 Thread MichaelH
Isn't that a pretty bike! The diagonal tube not only strengths this
big guy, but makes it look more proportional. The stack height
transitions nicely between the head tube and the stem. The
alternative would be either a much longer and heavier head tube or a
very high stem.

Unfortunately, for the OP, if you want higher bars, your choices are
usually, either a new fork (expensive) or a new stem. Riv sells a
couple of options that can help raise the bars

Re: [RBW] Saluki/Atlantis summer tour advice

2010-05-09 Thread Gino Zahnd
Jason -

Current road conditions would be useless right now given that it's
May, and you're going in July. :-)

Use Krebs maps, and AC maps. They're both good for different reasons.
Krebs are the best, though. The Pacific Coast book is ok.

Here are pics of my tour on that route, on my Saluki:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/gzahnd/collections/72157606892342672/

North of Arcata, use the Hammond Trail. Ask if you can't find it:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/gzahnd/2735946381/in/set-72157606560978936/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/gzahnd/2735929537/in/set-72157606560978936/

Regarding Anne's advice, the Lost Coast detour is amazingly beautiful,
and it's also some of the hardest/hilliest riding you'll ever do. It
is epic. It adds an entire day to the route; it's that hilly. And with
loaded bikes, it goes by beautifully, painfully, and slowly.

When you're near Benbow, camp there. In July it'll be hot, and the Eel
River will provide heaven at the end of that day.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/gzahnd/2744653044/in/set-72157606613356425/

Eat as many berries as you can. They're amazing, and everywhere! There
are tons of breweries along the route. For what that's worth. Our tour
was actually a tour of the coastal breweries...

Good luck, and have fun on that tour. It's some of the prettiest
riding anywhere on the planet!

Franklyn - don't ride south to north. You'll be miserable from the
howling wind, and you'll be on the wrong side of the road for the good
views. :-)

Didn't have time to figure it out but ended up removing the fenders for now.
Of course, there is now a bit of rain scheduled for tomorrow...

putting back the full knobbies as I was already late...

Re: [RBW] Re: Nitto Highrider front rack vs. Big Front Rack vs. Low Riders

2010-05-09 Thread Rene Sterental
Got the Big Front Rack and tried to mount it on the Bombadil yesterday
morning before heading out on my pilot S24O. To my dismay I was unable to
mount it; the front brakes (Paul Neo-Retros) did not allow the rack to align
with the upper braze-ons. I couldn't figure out a way around it in the
limited time I had, so I had to put the small front rack back on and will
call Marc or Keven tomorrow... :-(

Will post an update once I figure out if there is a solution. Otherwise I'll
have to return it and go with traditional low-riders.

[RBW] Re: Saluki/Atlantis summer tour advice

2010-05-09 Thread Me
Gino-

Thanks for this detailed response. Chloe and me are considering this
exact tour, actually we are reconsidering our initial plan for PDX
'front door' to Cannon Beach... and looking at 'adding' a lil' more
mileage to it by going PDX Front Door to Cannon Beach -- to San Fran
and Rivendell HQ for our long-planned/often canceled visit.

Ordered the AC Pacific Coast maps 3 days back, now ordering the Krebs
maps as well.

Slide Shows were great for wetting our jones!

Thanks again-

Use Krebs maps, and AC maps. They're both good for different reasons.
Krebs are the best, though. The Pacific Coast book is ok.

Here are pics of my tour on that route, on my
 Saluki:http://www.flickr.com/photos/gzahnd/collections/72157606892342672/

North of Arcata, use the Hammond Trail. Ask if you can't find
 it:http://www.flickr.com/photos/gzahnd/2735946381/in/set-72157606560978936/http://www.flickr.com/photos/gzahnd/2735929537/in/set-72157606560978936/

River will provide heaven at the end of that
 day.http://www.flickr.com/photos/gzahnd/2744653044/in/set-72157606613356425/

Eat as many berries as you can. They're amazing, and everywhere! There
are tons of breweries along the route. For what that's worth. Our tour
was actually a tour of the coastal breweries...

Good luck, and have fun on that tour. It's some of the prettiest
 riding anywhere on the planet!

Franklyn - don't ride south to north. You'll be miserable from the
howling wind, and you'll be on the wrong side of the road for the good
 views. :-)

It's so worth it, and SO STEEP. When you start the first climb out of
Ferndale, you think, wow, this is steep. But then when you reach the
top, and look far far down to the base of the second long climb, you
can't believe someone put a road there. It looks like it goes straight
up. It looks like someone glued asphalt on a cliff. Highway 1 was
routed inland in that section for good reason.

Then, all too quickly because the descent is scarily steep too, so
steep you can't see the road beneath you and it looks like you're
about to ride off a cliff into the Pacific 2000 feet below, you reach
the base of that climb. You hope your initial impressions were wrong.

Oh no. They weren't. The road looks like a cliff because it is a
cliff. Take a deep breath. Get in your lowest gear. Wish you had a
gear twice as low. Begin climbing. Hope you don't tip over.

It may be that I've adapted to the bike I ride now, or it may be that
I found the right inflation for the Big Apples, but they're even
better as a suspension medium than I thought at first.

At the back of the bike judgement is of course complicated by fitting
a fully sprung Brooks saddle, but at the front I now perceive the Big
Apples to be very nearly as good on the big bumps as the best front
suspension I own, Shimano's Di2 electronically controlled fork, and
better on removing the microripples.

The Big Apples also have stickitivity around fast tight corners,
appearing to stick to all their edges, though it is quite difficult to
find that out as the tyre sticks to the main surface for a long time
before it rolls over a little. With the Big Apples carrying pretty low
inflation (1.8 bar, under the recommended level for my weight), there
is a certain amount of apparent float, something like a Citroen DS at
high speed over cobblestones, but it's all in the head as the contact
patch remains stiffly attached to the road.

I think there's a lot more cornering power to discover in those Big
Apples, but without having my fastest downhills cleared of oncoming
traffic I shall probably never have an opportunity to find the excess.
It seems to me very likely that the Big Apple's cornering power
exceeds good sense, bravery, and possibly even recklessness.
In short, the Big Apples can be inflated below the recommended level,
and they provide a stable platform, supply suspended. Mine are the
Liteskin version. Since I have no experience of the standard Big
Apple, I can't say if the Liteskins are worth the extra, but the Big
Apple is surely worth the money.

I'm going to go out and ride my Monocog 29er in just a minute, but first
another word: note what the man says about the BA LS's being *as good* as a

is at a rock hard 1.8 bar/26 psi!! And for such wide and flat resistant
tires (did I mention that I flicked, literally, a hundred or so goatheads
off my tires on Friday, with no penetration?) even the heavy walled, wire

SnoCat SLs)?? I must try some. Will call LBSes on Monday.

[RBW] MB Sizing Question

2010-05-09 Thread Johnny Alien
I saw an old thread with this exact topic but can't bump an old thread
so I will start a new one.

I am trying to see if a bike that isn't local might work for me size
wise.

It is a Bridgestone MB and I am unfamiliar with mountain bike frame
sizing. I know that it is supposed to be smaller than a road bike
frame but I am not sure by how much.

I am 5'9 and my PBH is around 82. By Rivendell's sizing chart that
should put me in a 56-57 700C bike a 55-56 650B bike and a 54/55 26
bike. That seems about right as I ride 55 for a road bike (although I
like a 53 on my Bleriot). The MB I am looking at is the 49 frame.
While that goes along with the Rivendell chart I am still thinking
that it might be too tall.

What say you fine folk?

I am not sure how long of a top tube I would need. It looks like a
very different measurement than the road bike/country bikes I have.

be too small.

I think the 49 cm would work fine. The old Bridgestone catalog's
recommend about 1-2 of difference between PBH and standover height

 should put me in a 56-57 700C bike a 55-56 650B bike and a 54/55 26
bike.  That seems about right as I ride 55 for a road bike (although I
like a 53 on my Bleriot).  The MB I am looking at is the 49 frame.
While that goes along with the Rivendell chart I am still thinking
that it might be too tall.

 What say you fine folk?

[RBW] Re: MB Sizing Question

2010-05-09 Thread Johnny Alien
Also I had a 1994 XO-3 (which was the top of the line XO that year) in
a 52 frame. That also had 26 wheels and similar to a mountain bike
style. The standover looks to be the same as the 49 MB (although I
have no idea how that is possible). Seems like it might be a little
big for a mountain bike frame BUT I am sure I could fit it. I am just
not sure if that TT measurement would make it feel bigger to me.

Patrick,

According to Schwalbe, the 19 or 19A tubes are the right size for the Big
Apples (29x2.35). The 19A is a lighter version, and it was the only one
Wallingford had so I got those. So far, I love the Schwalbe tubes; they hold
air very long and seem to be excellent. Haven't had any problems with them.

You can rest assured that if I don't like these tires, you'll be the first

Well, off-road covers a lot of ground, so to speak. On a dry trail
with scattered rocks as the main obstacles, or on a groomed but

On the Minnesota River Bottoms, where I often ride, muddy, slippery
roots protrude at acute angles across the trail, and can send one ass-
over-teakettle pretty quickly if the tire doesn't have the knobbiness
to get traction on the roots.

[RBW] Re: Maybe WTB: 59 Bleriot?

2010-05-09 Thread terryg
I ride a 58cm LHT as my daily bike here in Chicago, and I ride a 58cm
650B Hilsen, set up for brevets and meandering. There's always a
downer moment after I spend a weekend on long rides on the AHH and
the smoothness there, when getting back on the LHT and the less-
smoothness there. (Don't get me wrong, the Surly is an excellent bike
for my needs, so I'm confused at my thinking and emotions.) I've
*often* thought how great it would be to just ride the Hilsen day in/
day out. But that would be unwise where I ride -- note that I'm too
chicken to commute daily on my QB.

My ebay saved search brought the 59cm Bleriot mentioned above to my
attention, and my gears are turning. Could I really seriously
consider a functional migration from my LHT to a Bleriot? Not only
that, but the Bleriot would serve as an ideal backup to my AHH.
Given a long-term relationship with a Bleriot, I'd even consider SS
couplers so I could easily get elsewhere for brevets, or have a bike
when I visit family, etc. To not have to carry my LHT up down 4
flights of stairs every day, carrying a Bleriot instead. I think that
would be another improvement (would it?).

I see one Bleriot on my commute sort of occasionally, and one (and the
same?) parks not far from where I work. The potential availability of
a 59 Bleriot is - how shall I say it? - troubling? Enticing.

as soon as they were discontinued and they started drying up the price

[RBW] For Sale: Quickbeam 56cm

2010-05-09 Thread Ken
Hello All,

I am new to this group. Honestly I joined because I am thinking of
selling my quickbeam and I would like to see if there is interest. I'd
like to sell it complete. Again I am testing the waters, I don't want
to waste anyone's time but I would like comments as I know what I have
into it but don't know what it is valued on the open market. I was
thinking of asking around $1800.

It is the orange frame. I bought the frame at Hiawatha Cyclery here in
Minneapolis three years ago. I built it up, with High Flange Phil hubs
laced to Mavic Open Pro Rims, hand built at Lickton Bike in Chicago,
Sugino Crown crank 175. Sugino Cup type bottom bracket, Brooks
Professional Sadde, Nitto Technomic Stem, Shimano Ultrega Seat Post,
Old Avid Machined Aluminum Cantilever brakes. After a year of single
speed riding I decided to add a shimano Alfine Hub. Jim at Hiawatha
built me a wheel the Alfine Hub laced to a mavic open pro rim. Now the
rear is Alfine Eight speed with a J-Tech bar end shifter. Its a very
nice set up.

So is there someone out there that would be interested in buying the
rig complete?

There is no choice. If you have a tall steerer tube, you need the spacers. If
you want less height, you have to cut the steerer and use fewer spacers.

There's actually a little more to it than that - This idea of using spacers
on a threaded fork steerer cropped up in a Reader some time back - I think
it was a Mark hack. (And I'm sure others have done it before, but this was
the first time I saw it specifically outlined in print. Certainly, using a
couple short spacers had been SOP.)

Since the fork is threaded, you are really changing the stack height of the
headset. Before you shorten the extension of the steerer tube, you want make
sure that the threading goes far enough down so you can tighten the top nut,
or plan on having the steerer threaded after cutting it.

The taller steerer tubes combined with the spacers probably allow a single
fork to be used on more than one frame. When the fashion was to keep the
steerer tube cut to the miminim amount necessary to poke through the headube
of the frame, you pretty much had to have a fork matched to each size.

situations successfully. Sticking with smooth tires has made me ride a bit
differently, but I've found few drawbacks.

Of course, that last 10-15% can be pretty interesting. The area where
things go well and truly awry...

But, if you aren't where you need dune buggy tires, the big contact patch
that round profile tires provide (and I do find the JB's noticeably better
vs the Paselas) on trails work well.

It does make your fore/aft weight placement more critical.
