I'm also not a tall guy, but I am a car guy. The Element, aside from gas
mileage, is a great carrier, but Honda is taking it off the market. As a
new vehicle, it's not a viable recommendation.

At least one local Rivendeller (see, back on topic!) used a RAV-4 as a bike
carrier, to store them vertical in the back, but I think he needed since
then to go a different way. Not sure if the current platform is as roomy.

Toyota is coming out with a Prius wagon or crossover. I can get two bikes
to lay flat in our standard Prius 5-door, so this should be even better.

If you like vans, how about the Chrysler vans with seats that fully fold in
to leave a tall space with a flat floor?

If you like sedans, can you take off the wheels, turn the frame upside down,
and place it in the rear seat footwell? Then the wheels can go on the bench
seat behind it, oriented so the dirty drive parts will not rest on
upholstery. The trunk is then free for gear and luggage, if you're
traveling.

A car guy! Sh! Don't type it too loud! I saw the new
Prius-V, it looks promising. And in keeping this Riv/tall boy
on-topic, all of these vehicles would have to meet this criteria:
Bike loaded in, rear wheel first, still attached, preferably with the
seat still in it's riding position, front wheel removed. Point being,
a rider with a 56 can get back to his vehicle, and if caught in a
downpour, or in a hurry etc, toss it into almost anything. I want to
do pretty much that with a 68-70. Kept in this light, a vehicle is
just another bike accessory.

[RBW] Re: Informal Tall Riders Group: What is the best vehicle forhauling your bike?

2011-01-16 Thread j4gitr
I personally just roll the bike into the car. I have to angle it a
bit, but I am able to put the bike inside without removing the front
tire. I then use a bungie to the rear passenger handle to secure it in
place. The front tire positions between the two front seats ever so
slightly with two bikes. with one I just push the passenger seat
forward a bit and all is good. This alleviates the need for the fork
mounts and allows me to convert the car quickly. I also have a custom
cut carpeting in the car that deadens noise and gives a little more
class to the vehicle that I may or may not have to remove if I used
the fork mounts. I'm all about ease of conversion.

I have a Honda Element too and I think it is ideal for a bike and gear
carrier.  I use fork holders mounted on pieces of old Trex decking to lower
the bikes to make easy entrance to rear hatch.  As an exercise I managed to
fit four bikes alternating front ends and back ends but three is more
practical (this is with both seats removed).
As to comfort,  I have made two trips to the mountains of Colorado from
Cleveland with my element which were ok sitting in the front seat.  I made
a trip to North Carolina with four guys in the car where I got to sit in
the back which was annoying with the rear seat theater seating.  However,
on all those trips the mpg was right around  30 mpg on the interstates.

the Katy trail with my 6'4 280# cousin next to me in the front seat.
It's been one of the greatest most versatile vehicles I have ever

Re: [RBW] Re: Informal Tall Riders Group: What is the best vehicle forhauling your bike?

2011-01-16 Thread Kelly Sleeper
I don't know that there is a best vehical Maybe it's more a best method
based on application.

Roof racks have been great from me. Especially when traveling with three
people, bikes and gear.
They have worked on cars, mini vans and my current Escape. The Element we
have will barely get my bike insdie., and I have no chance of getting three
bikes, people and gear in it.

For around town nothing is easier than the roof rack and it has fork locks,
rack locks and cable locks.

Bikes getting rained on is no biggie, I ride in the rain and in the mud
etc. The brooks saddle cover keeps the seat nice and dry.

For me the ideal vehical would be the full sized van with a gear carrier
hanging off the trailer hitch. That way I can carry 4 bikes inside with
comfortable seating for all and carry the gear.

I also have mountain bikes and do get muddy which sucks putting in the car.

The rear outside racks I've used tend to promote scatches and dings on the
bikes. But for ease of use they are great.

The one mini van I had that worked great didn't have a rear bench seat so
the rear tires could go between the two rear seats. But I don't have that
anymore.. life of company cars that get changed at employers choice every
two years.

Just as we make trade offs on bicycle tires, gear, comfort on our bikes
etc.. we make trade offs with our vehicals.
Practical for one is not for the next.

For most activities the roof rack covers all my needs. Including ability to
carry the Tandem and people and muddy mountain bikes. Bike bras keep the
bugs off for longer trips even if it kills gas milage.

Point being for me ... it's rare to have a single bike or person going to a
ride. Ability for minimum of 3 and 4 would be better.

started out at 58F, and went to 75F by the time I was finished up four hours
later.  I had tail winds blowing me along at 25mph for one stretch which
was great!  Toward the end I detoured onto a local trail (Carraige trail for
any of you folks that have rode out here before) and found that most of it
was covered in silt and debris and a big chunk of it was pretty much gone!
The trail has been there for over 100 years, so this was definitely a
 century storm.

About a two miles out from home, there was a cyclist sitting by his bike
staring at the back tire which was quite flat.  Asked if he needed help and
he jumped up saying Yes!  A couple other cyclists had already passed him.
He had a CO2 cartridge but no head unit for it.  They're not too much good
without one it seems.  I pumped up his tire while extolling the virtues of
tire pumps.  May have made a convert, who knows :-)

So great weather, great riding, great bike, great tailwind, viewed storm
damage, advocated for bike pumps.  A pretty good day!

http://picasaweb.google.com/JimDgoog/OBR_20089208628PM#

This is a week long supported ride and is limited to ~250 - 300 riders.
This year I'll be doing the Washington Bike Ride on my custom Riv.
http://www.oregonbicycleride.org/
OBR has been doing these rides for ~20 years and they are tons of fun.
Lot's of country type bicyclers ride, few pseudo racers are to be found.
Many of the riders have been participating for years. I have no
affiliation

with OBR other than being totally stoked.

I'm also planning to do at least three S24O's in the Santa Cruz
Mountains.

And I'll keep commuting on my bike since it's way more fun than driving.

[RBW] Re: Informal Tall Riders Group: What is the best vehicle for hauling your bike?

2011-01-16 Thread charlie
I ride my bike mostlywhen I have transported I have used a
rack outside or I slide it into the bed of my truck when I have the
canopy on. We used to have an Astro Van that I could load four bikes
into easily. These days I drive a 92 Suzuki Swift (38 mpg) and can't
haul a bike without taking the wheels off and/or taking off the
fenders so I just ride to my destinations. A Bike Friday folder is
nice to own when you are traveling by car often and I may get one in
the future, depending. You may consider SS couplers then you could
toss it into any small car. Way less expensive than buying a new car.
Heck you could even get a special coupled bike when traveling for
less.

On Jan 13, 3:02 pm, robert zeidler zeidler.rob...@gmail.com wrote:
Here's why I ask?  I'm thinking about some new (4) wheels, and would
like to be able to keep the bike inside at times in the event of rain,

a floor-mounted fork mount-just back the bike in, tighten the QR,
slide the wheel in next to it

Anyway, what is everybody else doing?

[RBW] SimpleOne - RBW Visit

2011-01-16 Thread A D
Snapped a couple of pics on a trip to RBW today. The 40 mile round
trip is a great weekend ride on the SimpleOne. The next time out I'll
try the ride fixed.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/livepake/5358492435/in/set-72157625707458063/

The only problem that I have with the SO is so much fun that my new
Ebisu is being neglected.

I picked up a Nitto front rack and Viyella Shirt with the RBW credit
a Christmas gift certificate. My wife says the shirt makes me look 10
lbs. lighter. It is a great fitting looking shirt and may pick up a
couple more when they're back in stock.

Here's the SO's breakdown:

58cm Prototype
Phil Wood Rims
Velocity Synergy
Jack Brown Blues
Brooks B17
Prototype Nitto Handlebar (I'm not sure which Model)
Shimano Brake Levers
16/19 White Industries Freewheel
17/19 Surly Dingle Cog Fixed
Sugino Crank 44T/48T
Shimano Seatpost
Shimano Canti's
Kool-Stop Brake Pads

Thanks to everyone on this list for all of the great advice!

RE: [RBW] Re: Nitto Mark's Rack Hardware

2011-01-16 Thread Frederick, Steve
This raises a question I've been ponderin' for a while. Does Nitto offer
mini-rack style canti-mount struts for the Mark's rack? I've seen some made
for the Campee rack but they're likely too short. Here:

It has pictures which include all of the hardware the rack originally came

And it has pictures of the rack installed in various ways.

 http://www.rivbike.com/products/show/mark-s-rack-nitto/20-108

They also sell spares that you may need, including special Nitto vibration-

 http://www.rivbike.com/products/show/nitto-rack-hardware/20-077
 http://www.rivbike.com/products/show/nitto-band-clamps/20-016

The hardware is not particularly cheap. But the only things I've seen ready-
to-use substitutes for in hardware stores are the normal- looking
nuts/bolts/washers that connect the diving board to the rack platform and
to the fork crown hole (all metric, which means not very common... and
stainless metric is less so, though my local Ace has
*some*) and the band clamps, which are sometimes referred to as P-
clamps (though even those are hard-ish to find in stainless steel).

Hope this helps. It's not complicated when you're looking at everything. But I
do find it complicated to talk about in the abstract.

 Good luck!

A Panda derives from a Flickr photo group called Bicycle Pandas
which (I believe) was started by a user named faster panda, kill
kill. It's bascially a self-referential portrait taken while
riding your bicycle. If you go to the group, there's a few
discussions of the naming. One of those webbernet memes which has
seriously stuck (in a small subset of a subset kind of way.)

That's the same amount of setback as the Velo Orange Grand Cru

[RBW]

2011-01-16 Thread b hamon
No pix of the bike today because I own possibly the most over-photographed
Rivvy in the world; but here are some random nature moments I enjoyed on this
morning's post-yoga loop of the Columbia Slough, Smith Bybee Lakes and
downtown St. Johns:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethness/sets/72157625713727495/

I hadn't had a chance to do this loop in quite awhile, almost nine months. So
it was nice to finally take The Rivvy (the blue bike, now fitted with drops)
and Just Go Outside. Temps in the upper 50's, a light breeze and passing
drizzles here and there made for a lovely ride.

Another thing: Having yoga class right before this ride seemed to stretch me
out just enough to resolve most of the reach issues since converting this bike
back to drops. And it's somewhat startling at first to ride such a big-feeling
bike (w/700c wheels) after riding a 26-wheeled All-Rounder as my daily
commuter. But by the time I'd gone about five or six miles I seemed to be fine.
Perhaps a touch more tweaking is in order but, um, yeah.
Wow.
Yoga before a ride is a very nice idea.

[RBW] Trip to Rivendell - Rode the San Marcos/AMOS prototype

2011-01-16 Thread RoadieRyan
I was in SF for some business training this week and fortune smiled on
me as class let out early Friday afternoon leaving me with enough time
to get from Downtown SF out to Walnut creek via BART and back before
my evening flight. It was well worth the trip.

Grant and Keven were in the showroom and both very gracious and
hospitable, I felt very welcome and got to not only ride both a 56cm
SAM and the 54cm San Marcos prototype but had a wonderful cappuccino
too!;-) Coffee and lugged steel bikes- heaven.

I was shocked by how light the SAM was and pleased that the 56 cm fit
my 82 pbh no problem, as I had been wondering for a while if it would
be too big. When I came back after my test ride with a big goofy grin
and mentioned how light it was Grant told me everyone says that!. I
think he/Riv has done such a good job of selling this bike as an all
rounder/stout/take it anywhere/accepts big tires type of bike that
people (or just me) expect it to be heavy.

The San Marcos was a dream, I liked it so much I took two laps around
the complex. Its light and nimble and smooth and if possible I had an
even bigger goofier grin on my face after riding it. I need to start
a San Marcos/AMOS frame fund 'cause that is going to be (is already)
one great bike. Love the blue color too.

Hope everyone gets a chance to visit the mother-ship it was great.

A few shots of the visit, sorry for the quality of my blackberry

[RBW] Rust on my chain!!!

2011-01-16 Thread AmiSingh
I found a good amount of rust on my almost new chain today! Definitely
less than 100 miles on it.

The chain was degreased/stripped of lube, then waxed with an 80/20
blend of paraffin to bees wax and I've been riding a few miles (15
tops) 3 times a week in the bitter cold Midwest. Once I rode when the
streets were a slurry of melting snow, ice, salt and dirt/muck.
Otherwise, mostly dry roads or when there's been a fresh thick
powdering.

I did not expect rust, but maybe I should have...

So what do I do with my almost new rusty chain and should I worry
about my bottom bracket or any other parts of the frame or any of it's
components?

Note, I like to keep my bike clean, use simple green finished with
pedro's bike lust every 2 or 3 times I ride in these conditions.

I'd say that ride in the slush did it. I ride in really wet

I'd lube it up good and forget about it.

Great photo set. You talked me into it too, I'm trying a basket.

I am on my 4th front bag (a little loafer this time) and although they
are all excellent well made bags they all come with their own
problems: can't mount lights to handle bar, can't use pockets due to
shifter cables, hands tangled in cords attached to brakes etc. Maybe
the little loafer (my favorite) inside a basket, that might work.

Very nice pictures! I've always wanted to ride that bridge but have never
figured out how to get there from Palo Alto.

Nice bike too!

Many time riding my bike reminds me of skiing groomed cruisers.
Can't beat it.
