Re: [RBW] Riv-ish retro cycling gloves?
The Spenco gloves are actually pretty nice. I've had a pair for a couple of years now. Doesn't get as sweaty as the leather and crochet gloves from Rivendell. I rotate between both. The Spenco gel seems to last longer than the padding on the Riv gloves, also. But there is something nice about getting a new pair of gloves from Rivendell and going out on a ride to see how long before they start to change color and show real beausage. I'll offer that I've been riding, though not as much or in the way I'd prefer. I'm dealing with a herniated disc in my neck and it put me off the bike for a while but now I'm okay to ride so long as I take it easy. I bought a used recumbent to try. It's actually kind of fun, and I think I'll keep it for change of pace rides even after my neck heals up! I also re-riv'd the fit of a couple of my upright bikes, raising the bars a couple of cm's above the saddle to ease strain on my shoulders and neck and that's worked out well so far. It's a gradual healing process--evidently, assuming I don't re-injure or irritate it, it will take 4-6 months (first symptoms serious enough to seek medical help were in early May though I think this has been coming on even longer) for it to heal and it will leave me slightly more prone to such injuries in the future. Thrilled I ain't--heck, I'm just now drawing a bead on 50 and I've got a lot more years and miles of riding I want to do! So, no biking holidays or long trips for me this year--easy rides around home and time to reflect on the fragility of life and health over a beer or three instead... Here's my 'bent if anyone is curious--on topic only because it let me keep riding when even my Rambouillet was temporarily uncomfortable... http://www.flickr.com/photos/40738390@N08/7421489358/in/photostream Steve -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. That's spot on - max heart rate is different for everybody as everyone's physiology is different. Formulas are often in accurate and if somebody really wants to know, they should have some physiological testing done to determine it. But that test isn't fun, and there's no point in doing it unless one is really serious about training and already has some solid fitness because a true MHR reading takes a true max effort - a lot of people quit soon after they reach their anaerobic threshold. Even without knowing one's true MHR, however, heart rate is an incredibly useful tool for gauging health and fitness. Your heart rate can let you know when you need rest, when you're about to get sick, when your fitness is improving, when you are over-doing it, etc. It's truly amazing bio-feedback and coupled with other metrics, you can set about manipulating and changing your physiology to perform better in a very efficient manner. but only if you want to, of course. in my own experience, even the slimmest structured training plans, based largely on heart rate, can and will lead to a step function improvement in performance for any given mode of exercise. lighter bikes, lighter wheels, supple tires, etc. simply can not approach the gains to be had from a very modest amount of targeted training. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Brake Installation Experience
I actually just put some 50mm Big Apples on my 58cm Atlantis with Paul Mini Moto's on the front fork. There is clearance...but just barely...maybe a 1/4 inch...maybe. Probably not safe for riding, but I made it to work today! On Sunday, July 15, 2012 5:05:44 PM UTC-7, meehan...@gmail.com wrote: Hi all! It's been awhile since I've posted to the list. I recently decided to sell my Atlantis frame and fork, and I replaced it with a Long Haul Trucker. I had an experience when I was building up the LHT tonight that I wanted to share, because I know this list includes a lot of steadfast cantilever devotees. After I got the fenders, wheels, bar and stem installed; I went to install my Paul Touring Canti brakes. These are among the best and easiest-to-install cantilevers that I've ever used. Still there was considerable fiddling about getting them set up. I installed the levers and went to wire up the brakes when I realized I didn't have a font cable hanger for a 9/8 steerer tube. Ugh! Figured I'd have to pick one up sometime this week. It then occurred to me that I had a perfectly good set of linear pulls along with a set of long-pull, Dia-Compe aero levers stashed away somewhere. If I use those, I don't need a hanger at all. This is a Surly not a Rivendell so I shouldn't be subject to too much ridicule for using linear pulls. So I somewhat reluctantly removed the Pauls and dug out the linear pulls (Avid Magnesium Single Digits) and long-pull levers. I was in the process of installing the front V-brake when I realized I was done! I literally laughed aloud! It's been a long time since I've used linear pulls and I forgot how easy they are to set up. I installed the lever and cable and did a spin-and-grab test and the brake felt solid with good power on the first try with no messing around. Now I remember why I felt like it was weird going back to (what I considered to be) archaic cantilevers when I got into the Rivendell world. I didn't see a single picture of a Riv with linear pulls when I bought the Atlantis, so I figured, when in Rome Anyway I've got a set of silver Paul Touring Cantis that I'm going to list for sale once I take a few pictures. Complete with straddle cables, mounting hardware, and I think some spare o-rings. Although, I recommend that you don't buy them and that you get yourself a snappy set of linear pulls! I'll list the brakes in a separate post once I take some pictures. I've got some additional parts I'm going to sell too. Cheers! [RBW] The new Atlantis coming together
A few weeks back I was lucky enough to score an Atlantis at a ridiculous price. Despite the price, purchasing the bike was a tough desicion for me when I, A) already had a wonderfuly fitting and riding Surly LHT; B) Wasn't sure that a 58cm atlantis would provide an adequate fit; and C) have a new 4 month old at home ( I may have left that part our originally!!) Many of you here were intergral in helping me make the leap to purchase the bike and I wanted to say a big hearty thank you! So far everything could not have worked out better. I was able to pass on the LHT to a good friend and now new riding partner. The bike rides, fits, and looks like a dream. And being that I was able to sell the LHT and some other parts to fund the purchase, the wife is happy as well. https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-WkSN85QEc_M/UAV6Gsy2yWI/ABg/ncgYwb6zCJg/s1600/IMG_0983%5B1%5D.JPG Here is a picture of the bike as it is now . I added some brown Big Apples and Paul mini-motos on the front, and swapped out a shorter stem, aside from that the bike is as it came. I still haven't decided what I am going to do in regards to the brake levers (as you can tell by my wacked out cabling and lack of handlebar tape). I had STI's on LHT, and while I don't miss the intergated shifting, I do miss the nice hand position on top of the lever. I also think I may like the clean look of aero brakes better. Does anyone have a suggestion for some nice gum hooded aero brake leves that offer a nice top hand position? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. The TRP Tektro levers on Riv's website are the nicest-feeling levers I've ever ridden -- just fantastic. Here's the link: http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/bl6.htm Very easy to brake from the hoods, too. They look a little funny in the pics (some of them, anyway), but the gum hood version looks really nice in the flesh. [RBW] Marin 48O
Well, my brother-in-law Joe and I finally did Marin County right for a trip that lasted longer than one day. My first adventure in Marin back in 2009 was a single night of hotel touring and accidentally meeting up with Esteban, Franklyn, Aaron, and a few others and meeting them for the first time. Since then, I have tried to get back to Marin for a longer adventure and kept getting rained out or sick or some other thing. Finally, Joe and I made it happen. We left Friday evening from San Francisco where Joe got off work at 6 PM. We were back to his house by 7:30 PM Sunday. Here is a map of the route and a description below that: http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/114089915 Friday evening, we crossed the GG bridge heading into Marin. We climbed Conzelman to the traffic circle. We rode down Coastal in the dark to Bunker. We stayed at the Headlands Hostel. I felt like I wasn't taking advantage of the tent that was adding to my load. But I liked the Hostel. I used the tent on night 2. Saturday morning we climbed Miwok Trail in the Headlands. Then we dropped to Tennessee Valley Rd to find and climb Coastal Trail. Tough climb, but I made it! We dropped down Coastal to hang out at Muir Beach for a snack. We took Hwy 1 North to a lunch stop at Stinson Beach. A lot of cars on a Saturday. No choice though. We took Hwy 1 North to turn right on Randall Trail and climbed up to Bolinas Ridge. We took Bolinas Ridge to Shafter and descended that. That put us on Cross Marin Trail. After taking Cross Marin trail north, we planned to camp at Samuel P Taylor. However, we decided we needed to get to Pt. Reyes Station to buy food sooner rather than later so we just headed up there before claiming a campsite. Error in planning, I'm sure, because perhaps a store in nearby Lagunitas would have served us better. But our bumbling ways ended up being more fun in the end. It certainly lead to a lot more climbing than we would have done if we had planned for more efficiency. We climbed on Sir Francis Drake to get back over to Hwy 1. There we saw Olema Campground and decided to settle for it. And there we found Dustin and Esteban near the end of their 8-day tour. Cool! Day 3 we rode with Dustin and Esteban on the last day of their tour. The route went over Mount Tam via Bolinas Fairfax, West Ridgecrest, Old Stage, and Railroad grade. Having a great lunch in Mill Valley at Punjabi Burrito with Dustin, Esteban, and Joe was a highlight of an already great trip. From Mill Valley, Dustin and Esteban rode fast to the city, while Joe and I took it easy. We visited the Bay Model in Sausalito and had some ice cream. Then we rode over the bridge and back to Caltrain. Outstanding 48-hour ride in Marin, and our bikes worked well for us. Atlantis for me, rear Hoss and front basket with net. Trek 7.2FX for Joe with rear panniers and stuff on top of the rear rack. The Atlantis with a lot of weight on it performed well on the hills. I was able to climb and descend in dirt without feeling like this is a crazy thing to do with so much stuff attached. I was happy with how much dirt riding we could put into our tour and how easy that is to do in Marin. But for me, low gears are a must for that. Also, I'm still liking the V-brakes. -Jim W. p.s. [RBW] Re: What's a reasonable price for a used Sam Hillborne?
Well, in case you'd like to include original price in your valuation, bear in mind that the Hillborne's historical pricing is complicated. Early in 2011, framesets from Taiwan were $1,000, Waterford framesets were $1,400 (Waterford framesets may have been less expensive, say, $1,250, just as 2011 began). I suspect there's a serial-number/manufacturer relationship that RBW might be able to verify for you. My personal recollection is that canti-studded frames were all from Waterford and non-canti-studded frames were all from Taiwan. (I'd use the name of the manufacturer in Taiwan but I've never seen it.) I don't know that anyone has ever expressed the opinion that one's frames are somehow better than the other's. Yours, Thomas Lynn Skean who chose Waterford to get canti-studs and two top tubes, which were available only from Waterford at one time On Tuesday, July 17, 2012 1:54:57 AM UTC-5, Ozonation wrote: Hi... new here, but was advised over in Bike Forums to check this user group! [RBW] Re: What's a reasonable price for a used Sam Hillborne?
I assume you've read the information on the Rivendell site about fit, and in particular about the fit of the Sams. Different Riv models have different fit characteristics. Since you're going to see the bike you can check it out for yourself of course. As I recall, the Taiwan-make Sams were the middle sizes and the Waterford-made were the small and large frames. At the time I was wanting a Sam, I would have had to pay quit a premium (to me) to get a 48 (I'm short). Since Riv has the same price on the new blue Sams now regardless of size, I'm assuming they are made in Taiwan. Not that it should matter. Grant has said over and over again that the Taiwan-made frames are just as good (well-made) as the Waterford. I attest that the workmanship on my (Taiwan) Bleriot seems to be very good. I agree with what others have said about price: seems in the ballpark, considering equipment. But another thing that I'd consider is availability in your size. There's not always going to be Riv frame on the used market to fit you, regardless of model. I bought my 51 Bleriot on eBay last year and since that time I've seen precious few Riv frames of any kind that would fit me. So I consider myself fortunate. If you're a middle size, situation will be a little better. Good luck with your looking. As you've probably seen here, most everyone loves their Sams. Diluted Gatorade also works for me. Yeah, diluted apple juice works too. Like I said, the V8 has been a revelation but not something I want to fill my bottles up with. Re: [RBW] Re: On carbs, tubby tummies, and sugary sports drinks
I gave up on sports drinks long ago. On long rides, I'll usually carry a bottle of water and a bottle of strong-as-death Irish breakfast tea. Usually, for rides under 2 hours, I won't carry anything at all unless it is really nasty hot and humid. Instead of goo-packs, I like apples or sectioned oranges or somesuch. My goo-pack imbibing friends seem to like it when I carry fresh fruit, too :) Cheers! lyle On 17 July 2012 12:14, Mike mjawn...@gmail.com wrote: Diluted Gatorade also works for me. Great looking bike, but you could afford to trim a TON off your shift cable housing. My favorite brakelever for your setup is the Tektro R200A. The Cane Creek gum hoods fit that lever. I stocked up on them when they were selling for under $20 a pair. I bought gum hoods for about $8 a pair. The reason I like the R200A is because I like a huge flat area from the ramps to the hoods, and these offer that. [RBW] King Grip Pedals
I had some 5% back store credit burning a hole in my rivbike.com account, so I recently made a purchase. (Thanks guys!) Part of my order was a pair of King Grip pedals. Did my first ride with them today and thought I'd share my thoughts for those who are considering them. The ride was my normal 10 mile commute, unseasonably cool with a slight breeze. Rode in my size 14 Chaco sandals, with socks (fashion at its best!) due to the cooler temperatures. Last night I installed the pedals. They were surprisingly light. They look very bulky and heavy, but when I held them I was pleasantly surprised. Too lazy to find the grease, so I put a dab of wax based chain lube on the threads and figured the existing grease in the crank arms would be sufficient. The spindles have both hex flats for a 14 mm pedal wrench and recessed holes for an allen wrench. I used the flats since I already had the pedal wrench in hand from removing the MKS touring pedals. The MKS touring pedals were bothering me in that I was constantly suffering from pedal strike. I tried, seriously, to teach myself how close they were to the ground, but it seemed that even on the most subtle of turns they would touch the ground. The King Grip pedals, on the other hand, had amazing clearance. I pedaled through every turn, even some that I shouldn't have and couldn't get them to hit the ground. I tried standing with one foot low and swerving back and forth on the bike trail trying to get them to touch, and they didn't. They had GREAT clearance! (Grant responded to my previous complaints about the MKS pedals, indicating that the King Grips had the best clearance of the pedals they sell) On the MKS pedals I have been using powergrip straps. I didn't miss the attachment at all with the King Grip pedals as the platform held the shoe in place well. Overall they were good pedals. My concern, though, is that they felt too narrow. I felt like I had to keep my feet in just the right place to keep them centered over the pedal, and yet I was still pushing against the straps of my sandals as my foot wanted to migrate outwards. It may be because I tend to pedal somewhat toe out, and on my old Speedplay Frog pedals I always special ordered them with extra long spindles, but I think that I'd also prefer a longer spindle with the King Grip pedal so that I could feel like my foot was actually on the pedal. Maybe I should try them with a set of those knee saver spacer, but I don't have any available. I also quickly understood why some here have been adding an extra support along the outer edge and am somewhat tempted to go back through the archives and see who was selling those and try to modify these accordingly. Anyhow, hope that this quick review is helpful to anybody considering these pedals... -Rex -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Thanks for all the suggestions. I was looking at those TRP levers, and they look beautiful...but also spendy. William, I am going to have to look into the Tektro levers you suggested. If I added the hoods you suggested, they look like they might provide a nice budget solution for the time being. As to the brake cable housing, the original owner was running a 120 stem. I swapped this out for a 90. He had the cable running long for his 120...now they are really long. I plan on getting the cables all cleaned up when I get the cockpit finalied and taped. [RBW] WTT my 10cm Technomic stem for your 11 or 12
Got mine new and put a couple hundred miles on mine before switching to an 8 for my Noodle bars. So pretty much new plus a few insertion type scratch. Looking for an 11 or 12 to try Albas. I'll be in Meredith NH for a month starting next week, if you're local to that area we could save a few bucks in postage. If not, I'm happy to send mine 1st. [RBW] Re: King Grip Pedals
I've got a pair waiting for me at the post office. :) Should be able to add my impressions by the weekend. On Jul 17, 8:57 pm, Rex Kerr rexk...@gmail.com wrote: I had some 5% back store credit burning a hole in my rivbike.com account, so I recently made a purchase. (Thanks guys!) The ride was my normal 10 mile commute, unseasonably cool with a slight breeze. [RBW] Re: King Grip Pedals
Grip Kings are great. I humbly remind the group that I have in the past sold a modification to Grip Kings to transform them into Grip King Supremes. I will be selling them again in the future. What I've made and sold is aluminum cages that sandwich in and enhance the platform width while sacrificing zero turning clearance. My retired father is picking away at redoing the tooling, which will put me in charge of production. I've got about ten names and email addresses for the folks that want to buy them when I have them again. $25 shipped is the price. Here's the youtube I did when I first prototyped these. [RBW] Re: The new Atlantis coming together
I'd be really interested in hearing your comparison of ride quality of the LHT vs. Atlantis. I have a Trucker but have always lusted after the Atlantis...The LHT rides like a tank and feels incredibly slow. I can't imagine that I'd be able to manage over 8 mph with any kind of load on it. Granted, a lot of that could be the engine, but would love to hear your insights of one versus the other. Re: [RBW] King Grip Pedals
I highly recommend the pedal spikes that Riv sells. I found that the Grip Kings became much less grippy when they got wet. After adding the spikes (which really aren't spikes, but more of a flat topped screw) my feet do not slip one bit when riding in rain, dry, whatever. FWIW, my riding shoes are the cycling version of the Keen Coronado, which are a bit like firmer, wider Chuck Taylors - flat rubber bottoms. Re: [RBW] King Grip Pedals
I have Grip Kings on both my bikes. I have RBW's spikes on one face of each pedal on one bike, no spikes on my newer bike's pedals. It is on the list of things to do to put the spikes on one face of each pedal on my newer bike. Unless it's really wet or snowy, I prefer the absence of the spikes; it lets me position my foot most freely, which I like very much. When it is very wet or snowy, I flip to the spiked face for secure footing; those conditions do make the pedals somewhat slippery. I find the Grip Kings nearly ideal for all the riding I do on trail and pavement. Just for context (which matters a lot given the huge variety of riding done by the folks on this group): Most often my rides are 5-10 miles at a stretch, every week or so 30-40 miles, never more than 60 miles (yet). I ride in Keen leather or Keen canvas shoes or Keen sandals. Sometimes I consider trying other pedals. But the Grip Kings provide no compelling reason for me to do so. Same with the Keen footwear (both for riding and in general). The big Keen toe box will keep me a Keen customer until they do something to screw it up. +1 on loving their Sams. I loved the Hillborne from the very first time I sat atop one. It just felt right. I bought an orange 2010 DTT canti-studded Hillborne. [RBW] Re: The new Atlantis coming together
Wow! I see very little space between those mini-motos and the tire. Perhaps that's an effect of the photo. I love Paul Components's stuff in general. I sort of wish the mini-motos had been available when I was building up my first bike. They look so clean! And when I look around I see more choices in short-pull levers than in the long-pull levers required by my (full-sized) Motolites. But I don't complain in general: the Motolites and my Paul Love Levers have been fantastic for me ever since I switched to using them. Very effective. Very confidence-inspiring. Very pretty, too, IMHO. [RBW] Re: The new Atlantis coming together
Thomas, There really is VERY little space between the BA's and the mini moto's. Maybe a 1/4 inch...maybe. Actually, it is probably not really a long term solution, or even a safe option at that. It kind of bums me out a little to be honest. I really want to run those brown Big Apples, but it looks like I would have to run canti's to make it work. I am not a huge fan of canti's after having v-brakes with travel agents on my LHT. Maybe some one has a solution for me that allows me to keep the Big Apples and not have to revert to cantis. [RBW] Re: Maximum Heart Rate
I believe the physiology research shows folks do have max heart rates, but trying to predict an individual's max from the published formulas is not appropriate. The published formulas are based on statistical fitting of large numbers of people, and the spread in the data is quite large. Though the formulas are correct on average, the standard deviation is bigger than the trends in the average. On Jul 16, 9:15 pm, Corwin ernf...@gmail.com wrote: I got a copy of Just Ride and read it. I agree with 99% of what Grant says. One thing I take issue with is maximum heart rate. Not explicitly what's in Just Ride. But more the concept of maximum heart rate as it's currently portrayed in health and medical literature and on the web. I think the purpose of discussing maximum heart rate in Just Ride is to get people to listen to their bodies. This is highly desirable. But the general concept of maximum heart rate is seriously flawed. In general, I don't think there is any magic number (or formula) for maximum heart rate. The only thing I think you can say is that if Joe is in good health and reasonably fit and Jack has a history of heart and/or circulatory trouble and is not very fit - then Jack should not push himself as hard as Joe. That's not to say that Jack should not get his heart pumping on a regular basis - just that he should probably limit himself to walking (potentially including hills). I did a thorough search of the web looking for research on maximum heart rate. Also consulted several experts. The only research I could find was anecdotal statistical data reporting heart rates for various groups based on age. But drawing a line through statistical data is just a curve fit. This is without any scientific basis to back it up. In order to establish a scientific basis for maximum heart rate, I think you would need to apply a stress test (bicycle, treadmill, etc.) to a rather large population. The population would need to be pushed near the point of failure - till an undesirable EKG pattern could be detected. At that point, you would have a good idea of the maximum heart rate for a given individual. It's very likely that the point of failure/danger would be radically different based on the health and fitness of the individual. For some people - that point could be as low as 140 beats/minute or lower. For others it could be 190 beats/minute or more. Also, based on the book Born To Run, I don't think there is any basis for saying a limit on heart rate must trend down inversely to age. Personally, I regularly get my heart rate well beyond the 160 beats/minute or so recommend for a 53 year old male. Since I've been doing this all my adult life (and my workouts seem to be growing in intensity), I'm not worried. I'm comfortable deciding when to back off. In my opinion, you should know your own limits - but should not let your limits be defined by a gross yardstick. And you should carefully establish your own maximum heart rate, and use it as a tool for your own training - but realize that it's a personal measurement/limit. [RBW] Re: Maximum Heart Rate
Since my cardiologist requires an annual trot on the treadmill as part of my care, I've quizzed him about this question especially in relation to cycling. A stress echo cardiogram is a closely controlled test to allow comparison of a patient's data from test to test, and over the years the maximum heartrate I'm meant to reach has declined, now 154 bpm. Years ago I asked about using a heart rate monitor and the treadmill rate as my max, thinking this would be a good idea. He explained that working at the test max for an extended period (more than a few minutes) was a severe test and not to even think about it. When prressed for OK, so what should I use for a max? his response was listen to your body pay attention. It's different for each individual especially anyone with cardiac problems. I won't give you a number; just make sure your comfortable. Your body will give you better feedback than a monitor. I didn't quite buy into that went the monitor route anyway. I've found numbers where I know I'm working but can do so for extended periods, and numbers that are definitely an over-exertion, so I just make sure I'm working hard enough to do some good but keep out of the stress zone. Your body does tell you stuff but the monitor sometimes lets you know sooner. You kinda have to experiment on your own to establish your own zones. Be brutally honest with yourself on how you really feel and don't try to cmpare your numbers to anyone elses. dougP On Monday, July 16, 2012 9:15:16 PM UTC-7, Corwin wrote: I got a copy of Just Ride and read it. [RBW] Re: The new Atlantis coming together
Wowser! That clearance is close! I just ran out to see what it is on my Atlantis with 80 mm BMX brake 40 mm tire. It ain't much more. I've got a full size Shimano V on order as my LBS didn't have silver. Never thought about something getting jammed in there; glad my anal nature insisted on matching brakes now. I was more worried about getting the noogle / cable thingie to clear the racks. If you have a pair of Shiimano Vs on the bench, you just need a pair of the Tektro RL520 long pull levers: http://www.tektro-usa.com/category.php?productid=1145catid=185subcat=0 $30 plus shipping, direct from Tektro. Mine came in less than a week. They are a bit narrower than the model 200s I had before but a lot wider than Shimano's standard aero lever. Black hoods only, I'm afraid. I kinda lusted after those Paul's for a while but the price is for someone in a higher tax bracket. Now that the clearance issue has come up, it seems they are meant for CX or similar uses where maybe 35 mm tires are the max. BTW, that couple of hours of fiddling installing the brakes is good for the soul, and makes you appreciate why bike shops charge what they do. I played musical brakes for a couple of weeks on a couple of bikes, but my billable rate is zero. dougP On Tuesday, July 17, 2012 7:46:06 AM UTC-7, The Cripler wrote: A few weeks back I was lucky enough to score an Atlantis at a ridiculous price. Re: [RBW] Re: The new Atlantis coming together
It's close, but if you're not running fenders, why not? If you would like to change, maybe look at regular Shimano Deore V brakes. Have them on my LHT which has 26 wheels and a fender. It clears the fender about as much as your Pauls do without the fender. Cheap Tektros might also work. Glad to see V brakes on another Rivendell, have Vs on the Sam Hillborne and eventually on the SimpleOne. (The parts are at my dealer, just have to get over there and pick them up.) [RBW] Re: The new Atlantis coming together
With the levers, it is actually a functional issue for me. My LHT, which I migrated from, had STI Levers. I really found myself using the nub on the top of the lever as a comfortable respite from the drops. I also found the shape to be something I prefer to the non aero levers on the Altantis. Tracy- I really loved my LHT. But I did find it a bit of a tank. The Atlantis just plain rides differently. For lack of better descriptors it is just smoother and more responsive, even with the big apples...I am sold on iot for sure. [RBW] Re: The new Atlantis coming together
I have a LHT also and want to switch to the Atlantis frame...you might switch to mounting the Silver shifter to the down tube.just take off the pods and the cable stops. It shortens and streamlines the shifter set up and makes the shifting the snappiest IMO. You'll find you won't be prone to shifting as much and the slight stretch to the lever (unless you have long arms) is good for you. Here is how I have mine set up.I used the older Shimano plain brake levers they feel pretty nice to me but the ones currently from Riv (Tektro's) are probably nice too. I'd just buy new hoods and wrap the bar with some cotton. The formulas in JR are accurate for lots and lots and lots of people.
