We get a fair amount of chip seal around here for reasons already stated.
Fatter tires at lower pressures (see the BQ charts for ideas) are very
comfy on them, especially riding a steel or Ti frame, and surefooted as
well. Cornering on loose stuff is of course always best done with caution
and at a slower speed than usual.

My ageing Miyata 6-10 sport tourer that I bought new in 1982 was starting to
complain a bit. Went looking for another steel lugged frame. Saw a Romulus in
Pegasus Cycles in Danville, Ca(2003). Asked about it and was told that it was a
Rivendell, from just up the road in Walnut Creek. Found the humble Riv HQ and
bought an Atlantis. Went through that, a Rambouillet, Quickbeam and
Bleriot/Protovelo. Now own a SimpleOne and Rodeo. Love these bikes.

[RBW] Mystery Bike Update and Question

2012-08-22 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J
Good news on the Mystery Bike front -- straightened the bent derailleur hanger
and realigned the rear dropouts last night, and I believe I got them both
right. And I got to buy a couple of tools!

So, on with the build. One question for the group: Which tire fender combo --
brown Delta Cruisers with cream Longboards, or the sturdy Marathons it came
with, and fluted VO aluminum fenders?

The former looks like this:

[RBW] Re: Fitting my SimpleOne not so simple

Have you tried different bars? I have a Nitto Torsion bar, a flat bar with
a little backsweep (made for Surly) on my Simple One (58), and I really
enjoy the way that it rides. I may narrow it a little at some point, but
the handling and comfort are excellent as is.

 Here it

as originally set up fixed at ~63 gear inches with a 120mm Nitto Tech
Deluxe stem, 48cm Noodle bars, Nitto 83 seat post, and Brooks B17 saddle.
 I'm 6'2 tall, 185lbs, with a PBH of ~90cm.

No matter what adjustments I've made, I can't get my hands and arms to
 feel comfortable on the bicycle.

I know I like the vast majority of my weight on the saddle and away from
my hands, so have put the saddle as far back over the rear wheel as the
post will allow and have tried putting the handlebars up higher as well.
Recently, I changed out the 120mm stem for a 100mm Tallux, hoping it would
move my centre of mass rearward, but my hands, arms and upper body still
feel propped' on the bicycle. Despite the marked up-tilt on my saddle, my
behind still seems to slide forward as well.

Have others experienced something similar? What advice might you offer in
adjusting the bike to fit me better?

Is it more realistic to give up and trade the SO for a Hilborne with it's
nice lax 71.5 degree seat tube angle to put my weight where I want it?

 Thanks in advance,

 Matt

[RBW] Re: What's your Rivendell story?

2012-08-22 Thread clampe1...@cox.net

I guess I'm really the new kid on the block.

As a kid I had a series of cheap dept store bikes and a couple that my dad
built up from frames and spare parts. I even had a Schwinn Stingray type
bike but it was stolen, along with every other bike I owned up to that
point. As I got a little older I got a generic 10-speed from K-Mart and
rode it until the cassette fell off mid-ride and my dad took it back. The
last bike I had was my dad's old, completely beat up 3-speed. I have no
idea what brand it was but it had the black/white color scheme of the cheap
Raleighs. Then when I turned 14 I got a motorcycle.

Flash-forward to 1994 and I somehow conceived the idea that I wanted a
bicycle. I did a lot of research and learned there were three basic types
of bikes: road, mountain and hybrid. The hybrids fit what I wanted with
their upright riding positions, wider tires, wide range of gearing and
overall versatiity. I then began researching brands and settled on a Trek
730, which I bought in 1995. I rode that bike until 2007 when I upgrade
to an aluminum Trek FX series bike. Last November I was asking some biking
questions on a completely non-biking forum and was directed to RBW's
website by a member, specifically, Grant's The Big Picture article. I
found much of what Grant said in that article to be in line with what I
like in a bike so I started reading more of his philosophy and ideas. Then
I actually started looking at photos of Rivendell bicycles and I was
floored!! They were easily some of the most gorgeous bicycles I'd ever
seen.

After a couple of months of drooling over their bikes, I e-mailed Grant
with a question about which bike he would recommend for me and told him my
circumstances. I'm sure everyone here knows about Grant's desire to help
others and his generosity. He made a small gesture to my circumstances and
then a rather large one! I was flabbergasted that someone running a small
business would be willing to offer what he did, just in order to help
someone. So, not only do I love the looks of their bikes, I'm a big fan of
Grant Peterson, personally.

I forgot to mention that after discovering Rivendell spent three months
looking for another steel bike and ended up with the same make, model and
year as I'd had earlier, only one size bigger.

When my wife and I got out to California, I look forward to visiting Riv
headquarters and I really want to ride a Hunqapillar. That's the bike
Grant recommended for me and it's the bike that best fits my particular
riding needs.

[RBW] Re: Mystery Bike Update and Question

2012-08-22 Thread William
I prefer the fluted metal fenders and the Marathons that are on there.
That said, I think you should buy any and every pair of tires that catch
your eye. Of the 6 bikes I currently have (7 if you include the tandem),
all but one of them have multiple tire options on the shelf. I virtually
never buy tires to put on a bike. I buy tires to put on the shelf. Then,
when a bike needs tires, I go shopping on the shelf. :)

If she had someone to help source and build it out -- customizing a UJB

We did that for my wife's bike years ago and it was well under $1000.

I don't remember the itemized list, but the original bike (fully built up)
was $50.
The big money item was a new wheelset with Nexus hub -- otherwise, pretty
standard stuff. I'm guessing it all came in for around $600.

She later 650b'ized it and it was way better:

Her budget is $1,000 or less, and I believe that for such money she

I'd like to see any of y'all's such examples or near examples,

I've seen some very nice modern, aluminum-framed city bikes --
Amersterdams, a very nice Specialized Sports clone, etc. -- but I'm
sure y'all have built up others on other plans. Please give total

Re: [RBW] Re: What's your Rivendell story?

2012-08-22 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
In my adult years, I've always ridden steel 700c bikes, and although I
looked at Rivendell for a while, I didn't want to plunge into 650b
bikes, which are the right size for my PBH. After a crash caused by
cracked roads led to the death of a fellow local rider, I decided to
ride road bikes with a minimum of 32mm tires.

That decision led to my purchase of a used Rambouillet, which I set up
with 32mm Paselas. I loved that ride and took the plunge on a new AHH
650b with 38mm Pari Moto tires. I love that bike, and am in the
process of converting all my 700c bikes to 650b (other than the Ram).
My Surly Pacer did great, and next is the old Columbus steel lugged
Bianchi. Someday I hope to complete my 650b stable with a touring
Bombadil when my kids grow up and can ride their own bikes.

RE: [RBW] Re: What's your Rivendell story?

2012-08-22 Thread James Warren

Here is mine:

1990-1991: everyone in my circle of friends started noticing Bstone mountain
bikes. I was riding my cheap GT Outpost at the time. Bridgestone's adherance to
smart parts and their lovely riding and climbing geometry offroad was becoming
known to us as each of us started buying one. (Eli: 1990 MB-2, Jay: 1990 MB-4,
Steve: 1991 MB-2, my brother Dave: 1991 MB-3, Bill (who had money): 1991 MB-1.)
I wasn't serious about getting one until my brother showed me the ad for the
1991 Red MB-4 made in Japan with a fully lugged Ritchey frame - such quality at
the budget end! The sensibility of the bike and the ad hooked me, as did the
the page for it in the catalog: We LIKE this bike.

http://www.sheldonbrown.com/bridgestone/1991/pages/bridgestone-1991-16.htm

It cost $550 and was the first big thing I ever bought with my own money. I was
in college at the time. I love that bike. I still ride it as my main mountain
bike even though I have a newer Niner. I got into reading all the Bridgestone
catalogs over the next couple of years. I was upset when the 1994 bikes came
with Rapidfire and moreso when later that year, Bridgestone left the US market.
Summer of 1994 happened to also be my entry into the world post-school, and one
of the first things I did was to get an RB-2 while they could still be had. I
got it from the Missing Link in Berkeley:

http://www.sheldonbrown.com/bridgestone/1994/pages/46.htm

My bike preferences formed in those years riding both of those bikes - a great
pair of bikes to have. In this time, I knew nothing of the name Grant Petersen.

In late '94, I liked my pair of Bridgestones so much that I decided to call the
San Leandro number of the Bridgestone office that was printed on the back of
the catalog to see if there any remaining XO's to be sold (naive I realize.)
Part of the reason I called was that the Bridgestone ads over the years
definitely had a friendly tone that made calling them seem pretty reasonable.
In '92 I think I ented a contest where you cut out the ad and draw, paste, or
paint a helmet onto Pineapple Bob's head (from the picture in the ad.)

So anyway, when I called the now defunct Bridestone in late '94, there was an
answering machine greeting telling us to keep our eyes open for Grant's
up-and-coming business called Rivendell Bicycle Works. As an LOTR fan, I loved
the name, and I was really intrigued by the idea of the new company.

Then survival concerns took over for the next 10 months or so - had to figure
out where to live, how to have a job, etc., and in the midst of this, I crashed
my RB-2 in the summer of 1995 and head-buckled the frame. This really bummed me
out. I put a lot of effort into replacing the frame with something that I
considered equally groovy. (Remember, no eBay back then.) I then remembered the
Rivendell message I had heard, wasn't sure if it got off the ground yet, but
somehow found their phone number. I called, wondering if one of their frames
could be the replacement. Grant answered the phone. By this time, I had learned
that he was pretty well-known, and thought it was really cool that he gave some
time on the phone to give me advice. I also learned that the $950 Rivendell
Road was going to be way more than I could afford at the time! From our
conversation, I knew I wanted a membership, so Grant set that up, and in that
summer and fall of 1995, I made a few calls to Riv ordering the really cool
parts they were selling, a lot of NOS stuff like good DiaCompe brakes. Usually
Grant, sometimes Spencer, was who I talked to on the phone. It was really fun
keeping up with their progress in those days (including the Reader's progress
reports), and in the mid-90's, they were one of the only fun bike companies
that was easy for me to access. I also learned a lot more about how to
spec-it-yourself on your bike. My replacement RB-2 that I eventually found came
out pretty cool, and I rode it work in Colorado every day. I remember Grant
explaining things on the phone like how different stems have different quill
lengths - fun times! I really wanted Riv to do well.

In June of 1996, I got to move back to California as I had wanted to, and
during my drive out, I stayed with my sister in Berkeley. By this time, I had
learned (probably from one of the Readers) that a visit to Riv HQ was possible,
but I also knew that their space limitations at the time might make it
inconvenient for them.
I got there with my RB-2 on BART, and I met Spencer and Grant, and their old
space was really small. But they were really nice. Grant like how I had set up
some of their parts on my RB-2 (mustache bars, high technomic and non-Aero
brake levers.)

To get back to Berkeley, I wanted to ride my bike. It's a long ride, and Grant
drew me a map on a copy of his book from the 80's Roads to Ride that he also
gave me. So nice!

[RBW] Re: Thinking of going with a raw clear powdercoat

2012-08-22 Thread rperks
After a few years of abuse, damp coastal mornings my RCP Roadeo started to
show some signs of rust at the lug edges. The downfall of most coatings is
surface prep. The beauty of the RCP is the Raw, but that is also the weak
link. If you sandblast, it will be a different look, but probably hold up
much better than RCP. Note at this point you have little choice other than
to blast. The next step in protection would be to pony up the $$$ for
liquid clear over the clear powder. You get a thinner high gloss topcoat,
that will seal the micro cracks in the powder. Note this, liquid clear,
also works over colored powders. I have heard reports that the liquid
clear has hleped in some instances of rust bleed through on powder-coated
bikes that see harsh duty.

When Waterford had to rework a fork dropout I mangled, the clear PC came
back a mess of shatters and flaking. I am not sure if it was the heat or
cold setting the alignment.

Recently, last year or so, I have seen bikes on the web by Toyo, Tange and
Ben's Cycle (Waterford) offered in clear. I am curios to learn about how
they are doing it. Particularly since these are contractors that reputedly
resisted Riv doing this, Riv backs off of the subject, and now it is Cool
so said contractors are selling clear coated bikes through other channels?

[RBW] Re: Longboard fender rub

2012-08-22 Thread Mojo
I am using them on my Legolas with 33mm Jack Browns and 35mm Schwalbe Cross
tires. No problem at all.
I do see the end of the fender vibrate a mm or two laterally on rough roads.
I think the key is to insure you have enough clearance between tire and
fender. I like a full consistent 1cm there.

They are not the perfect fender, with a bit of leaking off the sides at
times especially where the stay mounting hardware is bolted to the fender.
But they are cheap, rugged, easy to install, mostly effective, and I
think good looking.

Long story short. About ten years ago I was just learning and searching the

I fell in love with the XO-1 on first site. That lead me to the bobish

[RBW] FS: Baggins Boxy bag with Nitto F15 rack, more Baggins bags and miscellaneous parts coming soon

2012-08-22 Thread Andrew Drummond
Like the title says, I'm selling a Baggins Boxy bag and the Nitto F15 rack
it goes on. The good: it's a Baggins bag, with no tears or other damage.
The bad - it could use a cleaning, but most of the dirt is on the inside,
so maybe you don't care. The ugly - nothing really, unless you count the
repair to the clamps on the rack - see the photos here:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/bikesandtools/sets/72157631196902318/

$100 shipped from Portland, OR, paypal or postal money order, please. I'll
have more bags and stuff for sale shortly, including Baggins saddlebags
(Hoss and Adam), original Baggins panniers, a Nitto big front rack, Mavic
hubs off an MB-0, a 26 Bullseye wheelset, etc. More than I can remember
right now, but they'll be listed as soon as I can get photos taken,
hopefully tonight.

Re: [RBW] Longboard fender rub

2012-08-22 Thread Mark Chandler
Same here.  Part of the problem is the flexibility, and part of it is due to
the narrow clearance at the flap.  Planet Bike's Cascadia fenders allow for
more clearance, and are far more rigid, but don't have the coverage of the
Longboards.  Narrower tires will help with flap slap, but the inherent flex
issue remains.

The few times I've had pedal strike, even with the RMX pedal, it's been
on an outer corner of the pedal rather than the whole side. These ones

If you wander down there tomorrow let me know if the Glorius is still

[RBW] Re: Saluki porn

2012-08-22 Thread Rob
PS. I have SA-01 and my bike has that same rear centered cable hanger.
Plays nice with Paul Racer centerpulls. My decal uses a different font.
Interesting.

Yes, the bridge is original and the frame has a nice rear cable hanger
welded in place as well ... this, I believe is because the first runs of
these frames predate the silvers or Tektro calipers. I've run both and
found a little more room for the fenders with the center pulls
(particularly in front). Maybe the side pull calipers are a little nicer
feeling ... but not enough to be bothered over.

yeesh, that should have read: and an interesting note about the
butterscotch color *from* *the original owner *... !

Here's the head badge, it's a that gold(ish) color no idea if that

*I have the very first butterscotch Saluki--custom colors were available
for a modest up charge in the first run of frames. I wanted something
similar to the harvest gold color offered on customs, maybe a bit richer,
with a little more brown, and after a few email exchanges, Grant came up
with that color for me. He like it so well he made it the standard color
for subsequent runs--not entirely a new shade for Rivendell; it is very
nearly the same color as one of my early WoolyWarm jerseys...*

$100 shipped from Portland, OR, paypal or postal money order, please. I'll
have more bags and stuff for sale shortly, including Baggins saddlebags
(Hoss and Adam), original Baggins panniers, a Nitto big front rack, Mavic
hubs off an MB-0, a 26 Bullseye wheelset, etc. More than I can remember
right now, but they'll be listed as soon as I can get photos taken,
 hopefully tonight.

RE: [RBW] Re: Mystery Bike Update and Question

2012-08-22 Thread Scot Brooks
Tried the Soma New Xpress tires tonight at 60psi (they say 90 max), and they
were pretty nice. Back tire wasn't going all super-squish even at the
relatively low pressure. I purposely ran over a lot of rough stuff and they
soaked it up much better than the 38c Marathon Greenguards I was running
before. Anyway, nice tire and something to maybe consider. Super pretty as a
bonus.

Re: [RBW] What's your Rivendell story?

2012-08-22 Thread Stonehog
I had just moved back to Seattle and started commuting heavily by bike in 2008.
I was looking for a road bike, as I was tired of modifying my mid-nineties Kona
MTB for the commute. I started reading a lot online. Peter White, Sheldon,
and Grant's writing - not sure where originally, but it struck a cord. My first
road bike was an early 80's Raleigh Reliant I had purchased with paper route
and corn-detasseling money (grew up in MN). My first MTB was a '92 Stumpjumper
Pro. Both steel, and that left an impression on me. I never liked the stiff
feel of Aluminum and carbon frames. It was like when vinyl was superseded by
CD. Listen to an old album if you want to hear real bass.

Anyway, I somehow found out that an aquaintence had some rivendell bikes, so I
dropped in one day and saw and rode some of his beautiful bikes. (thanks,
Frank!) After that, all bikes I saw paled in comparison. I went to the Seattle
bike show and saw a lot of nuthin'.

in early 2009, I ordered the 59cm copper frame special A Homer Hilsen, and
spent the next few months getting components and building it up. Love! After a
trip to Riv HQ in 2011, and rides on a Bombadil and 2 Hunqapillars, I was
hooked again. I picked up a 54cm Hunqa this year, and it is now my camp/tour
bike, to compliment my rando AHH.

I expect there is a Roadeo or Legolas in my future.
