[RBW] Shimano 9spd DA Downtube Shifters in Bar End Pods?

2012-09-30 Thread ekoral
Hey Y'all,

I've got kind of an interesting issue-

I'm trying out some indexing (not something I usually like) on my atlantis,
and I've got a real pretty set of dura ace 9spd downtube shifters (SL-7700)
that i'm sticking in the bar end pods that used to house my silvers.

Has anyone tried this?

It seems to shift okay, but for some reason there is no 'click' when i
shift into the largest cog position. Is this normal? is it only supposed to
have seven clicks, and then you just sort of hope the shifter stays when
you're in your largest gear? That doesn't seem quite right to me. It will
shift when you push it to it's last position, but it doesn't have that
satisfying I'm not moving an inch click sound that all of the other
positions have.

Let me know if you folks have any idea of whats going on!

Thanks,
Eli

I use the DA BE's on our tandem and they work pretty well. I don't
remember the end cog shifting any different. My only complaint is that
they seem to need an overshift. I often shift with the click then need to
go another mm to move the chain.

I think you need to add some tension to the shifter cable.

I have a Shimano SL-7800 DT shifter lever on my Shimano bar end pod.

Don't know if I can help any.
It clicks into every gear on my 10-speed cassette. Indexing works great.
Friction wit it seems to be trickier.

[RBW] Re: Shimano 9spd DA Downtube Shifters in Bar End Pods?

2012-09-30 Thread lungimsam

 Ideas:

 1. Maybe your limit screw needs to be let out a bit to let the lever
travel far enough so it will click?

2. Sometimes the DT lever cable hole doesn't line up correctly with the
hole in the pod. You may need a spacer, or the DT-to-pod adapter to get
things interfaced better?

3. Did you line up the arrow on the shifter housing correctly with the
lever when you mounted it to the pod? See the tech doc above for how to do
it.

[RBW] Re: Combining small Nitto rack with Tektro hanger?

2012-09-30 Thread tim becker
I just did this a few weeks ago and I can confirm it works, at least on
my Atlantis. The Tektro hanger comes with two recessed allen nuts that
work with the Nitto. A Sheldon's fender nut works here too, but the rack
stud is too long to allow the second bolt that attaches the fender to
engage. The angle of the rack changes slightly due to the thickness of the
hanger, and the one or two thick toothy washers needed to clear the lower
headset cup - so attaching the lower struts to the braze-ons takes a little
more encouraging than usual.
  hope that helps.

Only a few times have I ridden true singletrack, and the last time I did

fixed gear, my bike handling skills are rather pathetic. So grunting the
lumbering Fargo over true 7/10 singletrack (10 being experts only) was
quite an experience for an old tyro.

There is a state recreational area some 5 miles south of HWY 550 just a
few miles south of the little corner village of San Ysidro with typical
high desert terrain and fauna: more ground cover than Albuquerque (my
iPhone showed 5600-6400 feet for the ride) and terrain more rugged and
rolling; small, bent pinions with cactus; pinions more common as you rise
north and west of ABQ. We drove out to the trailhead for a brief late
afternoon ride, me on my Fargo complete with front and rear Tubus racks,
dynohub lighting and Big Apples on SnoCats, and brother on his new KHS
 29er.

The trail follows a ridge with steep dropoffs on each side for a loop of
nine miles; we bailed at about the 4 mile mark thanks to my incapacity and
made the return on a rutted, sandy jeep track at the bottom of the spine.
Given my inexperience, the lack of tire knobs, and the newly revealed fact
that the Fargo is not by any means the ideal bike for technical
singletrack, I walked about a quarter of the ridge, mostly rutted, steep,
rock-obstructed downhlls and one frightening 1/4 mile section of slanting,
narrow, loose-surfaced trail on the side of a 45* slope.

The Fargo, especially with 42 cm Noodles, does not respond quickly to fast
steering inputs; doubtless the soft, wide tires also affect this behavior.
Riding on the flats with the interrupters was even more frightening than
riding the hoods -- bars are about level with saddle and lower than ideal
for technical riding. Still, I was pleased by the way that the fat tires
absorbed small stones and floated over sand, tho' I can easily see how
suspension would be desirable for the big pits, ruts, and rocks. I did
notice that the Fargo floated over deep sand that sent my brother, with
50-55s at 40 or so, fishtailing as he powered through to keep his momentum
 up.

God willing we'll go back next weekend, and I'll install 60mm Weirwolfs in
place of the BAs and take off some of the weight: probably the front rack
and some of the lbs from the 4 lb kit bag.

I meant to take more photos but we were rather rushed and I was too intent
in clearing obstacles, making uphills, and surviving steep dropoffs.

[RBW] Re: Flat fixer: does anyone know anything about this?

2012-09-30 Thread Montclair BobbyB
Not familiar with Schwalbe's sealant, but I have been using Stan's latex
sealant for years in my tubeless mountain bike tires... The stuff works
great, but it's not always a matter of filling it and walking away.. it can
take some tweaking to get it right. A quart of Stan's sealant runs around
$25, but compared to 100ml for $15, Stan's is the far more economical
choice.

IF you want to use sealant inside your tubes, you will need to remove the
valve, add sealant, reinstall the valve, then put the tube and tire back on
the rim. Reinflate, then rotate the tire and shake it in different
directions to properly coat the inside of the tube. If you do get a
puncture while riding, the air flow SHOULD force any additional liquid
sealant sitting in the tube to the puncture, where the air rushing through
it causes the sealant to form a latex plug from the inside. thereby sealing
the hole. In some cases (depending on the size of the puncture and/or the
amount of air in the tube, it may still actually flat, even with the
sealant. If this happens, I typically reinflate to the max allowable PSI
and do some more wheel shaking to ensure the sealant gets to the hole (the
added air pressure helps to force it there).

But if the hole isn't too large, it WILL seal it... Good luck.

I wonder if it would have a Slime effect without the annoying qualities of
Slime (leaking thru the holes and filling your tire casing with dirty green
 slippery stuff).

I hefted a Slimed 26X1.5 tube today that must have weighed 800 grams, so
full was it of Slime. I guess eventually the stuff solidifies so that you
have in effect a solid tire. (The tube was inside a heavy, belted
Specialized belted Flak Jacket 26X35 with special, supple 6 mm sidewalls
lined with a thick tire liner -- a setup designed for comfortable, spritely
 riding.)

2012-09-30 Thread ascpgh
While I agree on the bare facts with Steve, I have to add that on our
tandem w/ Shimano bar end shifters which replaced the
broke-at-most-inopportune-time OEM brifters and I have found some delayed
signal effect of my shifter inputs when waiting for the drivetrain to
respond.

This bike has vast runs of housing instead of strategic placement of
housing stops and bare cable down the long runs of frame tubes between the
bars and the derailleurs. There is simply too much compression within even
the most outstanding cable sets not to feel slow and unadjusted. I just
live with it or switch to friction once out of the noisier areas where I
cannot hear the clatter from the drivetrain over everything else.

[RBW] Shimano 9spd DA Downtube Shifters in Bar End Pods?

2012-09-30 Thread Chris
I have the same setup on my wife's Betty. Are you using the Shimano or Silver
pods? There is a difference between them I find. Use the Shimano pods if you
can locate a pair. There are these orientation markings on the Shimano spacers
that they can only be inserte into the pods in a certain way.

The shifting does get a bit tricky when you reach either of the ends. The
shifter seems to run out of room and doesn't quite click as smoothly. However,
with some fine tuning of the tension, it will shift to all gears with no
problem (at least on the Betty).

[RBW] Fastgrips: again.

2012-09-30 Thread PATRICK MOORE
At a suggestion from my brother I added ~15 lb to the Fastgrips and they
are far, far better. The Kojaks, a bit wider, seem to roll very well at sub
60 -- I guess some tires are just more sensitive to pressure. The FGs
certainly feel more harsh than the Ks at the higher pressure -- in fact,
they feel harsher than the Turbos or Michelin Pro Race 3s, both 22 mm, at
90-95. But they've gone from Damn, these things really feel slower than
the Kojaks to Do these things still feel slower than the Kojaks? They
are Fastgrip City Ks 1.25, and I suppose the K means Kevlar -- which
around here is worth s*d all for goatheads -- got a flat on the way back
from church just now.

I'd really like to try the Fastgrip City non-Ks -- does Avocet still make

My SIS indexing works great across the whole cassette. So I think yours
could too. I feel no resistance when moving the levers. Every gear change
clicks nicely, even to the extremes of the cassette.

And, my housing goes from the barends all the way up the bars and comes
outta da bartape at the stem. So I know you can do it with lotsa housing,

Re: [RBW] Re: Flat fixer: does anyone know anything about this?

2012-09-30 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Bobby: are they the same thing? 25 ml is 1oz and I don't think that 1 oz
of Stan's will work.

I've tried various Slime/Stan's-type sealants and have given up because in
every case, even tho' the stuff works for many thorn holes, eventually it
will leak and make a puddle in the tire casing -- a bloody mess. I was
hoping that this stuff was of a different sort.

On Sun, Sep 30, 2012 at 12:18 PM, Montclair BobbyB
montclairbob...@gmail.com wrote:

Good luck.

I wonder if it would have a Slime effect without the annoying qualities
of Slime (leaking thru the holes and filling your tire casing with dirty
 green slippery stuff).

I hefted a Slimed 26X1.5 tube today that must have weighed 800 grams, so
full was it of Slime. I guess eventually the stuff solidifies so that you
have in effect a solid tire. (The tube was inside a heavy, belted
Specialized belted Flak Jacket 26X35 with special, supple 6 mm sidewalls
lined with a thick tire liner -- a setup designed for comfortable, spritely
 riding.)

[RBW] Winter Shoe Recommendations?

2012-09-30 Thread Shaun Meehan
Hi All,

I'm looking for some recommendations for winter riding shoes or boots. For
just plain old platform style pedals, not clipless SPD pedals. And by
winter I mean cold weather. Not West Coast cold (which we refer to as
chilly in these parts) but Minnesota cold. Something that will keep my
feet dry and warm down to zero degrees Fahrenheit and below. Right now I'm
using Tioga Surefoot and Spyder pedals on my two most ridden bikes (if it
makes a difference). And in warmer weather I typically ride in Adidas Samba
Millenniums or Keen sandals. Any recommendations are appreciated.

Thanks!
Shaun Meehan

I do not think wearing a helmet makes me take more risks when riding.
Why? Because I am also concerned that I don't break my collar bones, arms,
hands, legs, injure internal organs, etc.
So I am going to be very careful anyway.

I wonder if there have been any reliable studies about the efficacy of
helmets in the USA.

Also, I don't believe you can compare the cycling milieu in the USA to a
Euro or Chinese milieu.

It would be nice to know for sure if helmets are necessary. I dislike
wearing them.

[RBW] Re: Shimano 9spd DA Downtube Shifters in Bar End Pods?

2012-09-30 Thread blakcloud
I have the same shifter and experienced the same problem but they were on
the down tube of the bike. It wouldn't make the click and wouldn't stay in
the cog. I tried everything to get it to work, I finally just gave up and
decided I had an eight speed instead of nine. At the time I kept thinking
there is something wrong with these shifters. This year, I went with the
Albatross bar, I decided not to buy the retrofit pods for the shifters,
since they didn't seem to work, and instead bought the Dura Ace Bar End
shifters.

What a world of difference. True bar ends work like a charm. Right from the
get go, installed them and they shifted up and down, with no problems what
so ever.

I know this really doesn't help you but I will be interested to know if
there is a solution since I still have the shifters and want to use them
someday.

Re: [RBW] Rivendell Coffee Ride

2012-09-30 Thread Robert Barr
Jim, I am curious about the age of the woman who commented on your bike. I
had a strikingly different comment last week at my local coffee shop (I
detect some similar tendencies with this group). For the second time in
about two weeks I was complimented on my new style commuting bike. My new
style bike is a 1993 MB3, with Alba bars, Brooks saddle, and Nitto racks
front and back. A large Wald basket sits on the back. The girl that
commented on my bike said she likes the look of the new commuting bikes and
was hoping to buy a Surly. She said her father and his friends like to ride
old racing bikes and wear funny bike outfits (her words!). The week before
a student made a similar comment, and asked were he could buy a bike like
mine because he wants to ride to work and old style bikes aren't good for
that (again - his words). It all depends on what you remember. The girl at
the coffee shop was probably the same age as my bike, and I am sure she has
never seen English roadster. I think I know who her father is, and if I am
correct he rides a very new Trek Madone. We will see what they say about my
new Hunqapillar, it should be at the coffee shop next week. Bob

Grant visited us in the DC area yesterday afternoon and evening - and I

after 5 pm, we went about 17 miles round trip. After much chatting back at
the shop, and the addition of another 15 people or so, Grant started his
talk after 8, in the dark on a section of parking lot above College Park
Bicycles. Larry and Linda Black - owners of College Park as well as Mt
Airy Cyles - were terrific hosts. Great bike route on the Painted Branch
Creek trail and then through the Ag Center (Beltsville Agricultural
Research Center, division of the USDA) - nice rural riding in a very built
up area. There were some snacks and drinks for everyone when we returned
 to the store.

I met the Mystery Bike in person - oh, and its owner, Tom A! He's a
delightful guy, it was great to meet him. The bike is definitely unusual
and looks really comfortable. Bikes in attendance - a couple of Romulus's,
2 Hillbornes (Greg and Paul, who drove up from Richmond) - one with single
top tube, one with double. A Quickbeam and a Simpleone, couple of All
Rounders, an Atlantis (or two). One Bleriot, of course. I've probably
missed some (I didn't take any notes!)

I'm not sure but I think Tom, Richard H (he has a new Hilsen), Ed F and I
were the only people from this list who were in attendance. If I missed
 someone, give a shout out.

Grant's talk was interesting, especially hearing (as others have noted)
where he was as a biker for nearly 30 years - racing for over 6 years, but,
he said, for 22 years after that, he continued to view biking as requiring
pre-planning for speed and split times, and recording all kinds of
measurements about his rides. He said that if he went for a casual ride
with his family, he needed to go for his own workout ride afterwards. I
think all of that background gives enormous credibility to where he is
today about biking, fun, unracing. He and I also talked books (not Just
Ride) and general stuff. He's a neat guy just to hang out with.

I asked him if he invented burpees, the answer is no. But then he gave
an impressive demonstration. He can do an excellent fluid burpee! I
find them very hard, and can do them only awkwardly.

 Pictures -

 Joan
By the way, I rode to College Park from my house in Arlington, winding my
way through downtown DC and then winding through Northeast DC. Those 15
miles took over an hour and a half - traffic, lights, a couple of stops for
route discussions. I used Google maps biking directions, though Google's
first choice used a busy road for part of the ride, and I went over the
route piece by piece on my own before printing but still there were some
busy roads and uncertainties. It was close to 9 pm when the gathering
winded down and I took the subway home.

delightful guy, it was great to meet him.

think all of that background gives enormous credibility to where he is today
about biking, fun, unracing. He and I also talked books (not Just Ride)
and general stuff. He's a neat guy just to hang out with.

I asked him if he invented burpees, the answer is no. But then he gave an
impressive demonstration. He can do an excellent fluid burpee! I find
them very hard, and can do them only awkwardly.

[RBW] Re: In theory: New Riv model with new SRAM 1x11 and no FD

2012-09-30 Thread RoadieRyan
I say if you can dream it build it. There may be less expensive ways to do
it as others have pointed out, most notably the Alfine 11 speed IGH, but
part of the fun of bikes and gear is coming up with off the wall
applications.

I recently converted my Handsome Devil from a Sugino Triple 46/36/26 with 8
speed cassette to a single 34t with 9 speed 11x34 cassette. It works great
in my hilly area of Seattle and gives me a nice simple bike when I just
want to hope on and go. One Derailleur, one shifter (Friction bar end)
one chainring. So far I have had no chain drop issues which I was warned
by a LBS owner was a big draw back of of 1x9's. of course I think he was
just trying to selling me on a IGH. I have a Paul Chain keeper but I
haven't gotten around to installing because its just hasn't been
necessary.

Whatever you do have fun with the build and of course post some pics.

as the largest one and only one chainring in the front.

You could do 34 or 32 as your single front chainring and still pretty much
have a lowest gear suitable for touring. With a 32 in front, the 32/42 low
would be very similar to a 24T granny combined with 32T rear cog. With a 34
in front, the 34/42 low would be a bit easier than a 24/29.

The lack of large outer chainring would provide good real estate for a
pants guard. Also, I've been riding my 1x11 Alfine QB a lot lately, and
it's nice to have a wide gear range and no FD. Just a bit less complication
and a beautiful bare seat tube when you look down. I think it would be even
better with a rear derailleur instead of IGH.

Such a bike would be really sweet.

[RBW] Re: Front rack bag for tall riders?

2012-09-30 Thread john
@ Steve, Joe, and Jim: thanks for the great photos. These really help. I've
got an interesting situation (I think). I have been flummoxed in trying to
set up a handlebar bag for some time now. In short, my bike's long head
tube combined with a fairly large frame have been difficult to fit. I ride
a Sam Hillborne (60 cm). The drop from the horrizontal stem bolt to the top
of my fender (where a rack would sit if I still had one on) is 32 cm.

My first attempt was with an Ostrich bag with a Velo Orange stem-mounted
decaleur. The bag was too short: it didn't reach my rack.

The second attempt was with a Swift Industries rando bag (their largest).
Still too short to reach the top of the rack.

I've been eyeing a Gilles Berthoud 28 (their largest) for a couple years
now, but have not wanted to pull the trigger for fear of it not working,
either.

So, questions to any and all: The largest Berthoud is 25 cm tall. I've
still got 7 cm between the bag and the horrizontal stem bolt. Will the
Berthoud decaleur get me to the rack? If so, do I purchase their standard
size (91) or their longer (121)?

I'll attatch a picture of my set up in hopes of helping to clarify my
situation.

Thanks all!

My handlebar bag is in tatters and needing replacement. In addition, it

racks. The problem is, in all of the pictures that I see where they look
very conveniently placed, they're on small bikes. On these small bikes
with short steerer tubes the bag is tall enough to come up nearly to the
bar height, and all is well. Problem for us tall guys is that the distance
down to the rack is quite extreme. So, I'm thinking that such a bag
 wouldn't be ideal for me.

Any thoughts on this subject from fellow tall riders? Have you tried such
a bag? Did it feel inconvenient to use? Did you find it to be a
non-issue, such that you're wondering what I'm fretting about?

[RBW] Re: Paul Brakes; MiniMoto v. Motolite

2012-09-30 Thread CW83
The mini moto is a great brake, at least on my bike, which I use for road
riding, commuting, and occasional gravel grinding..

I replaced a Tektro R6 mini-V on the front of my Lynskey ProCross (Alpha Q
CX 10 fork; Shimano Ultegra 6700 levers; Mavic CXP33 and, sometimes, A719
rims; Continental 28mm GP 4-seasons tyres and, sometimes, Schwalbe Marathon
28mm tyres; Shimano cables housing) with a mini-moto.

The Tektro has, I think, 90mm arms, and is similar to the TRP 9.0 (its arms
appear to be almost identical; I suspect springs accoutrements are of
lesser quality--I've only been able to glance at the TRP brakes on someone
else's bike). The Tektro is not a bad brake, it's reasonably powerful. It's
certainly *much* more powerful and useful than the Avid Ultimate cantilever
brake (set up in narrow stance)I used it to replace. At least with my
setup.

The Avid's stopping power, both with its original pads and with salmon
Kool-Stop pads, was only notional when braking from the tops, and just okay
from the drops. And before anyone writes to me about cable lengths and
cantilever adjustment, please know that I've worked on bikes with
cantilevers of all types, brands, and models for nearly 40 years. After I
had done my best with them, I had their setup checked and tweaked by a
highly experienced, and well-regarded racing mechanic--with the same
result. The Avid's are well made, easy to adjust, and have smooth
modulation. However, on *my* bike, with *my* components, they were less
powerful than the Tektro CX720 cantilevers I have on another bike (with a
different type of lever) and for my purposes almost dangerously useless in
the wet. They were *almost* acceptable when I added Cane Creek CX levers to
the bars, but I don't like braking from a position so close to the centre
of the bars. I add that as I have incipient arthritis in my hands, my hand
strength from the tops is sometimes weaker than I'd like. I suspect the
type and pull of lever is crucial to these brakes.

In terms of raw stopping power, the Tektro was strong from the tops and
excellent from the drops. They worked well with Kool-Stop salmon pads. But
I had to run the pads extremely close to the rims and use high spring
tension on one side of the brake in order to keep the arms centered. Their
modulation was a *little* on-off, but more than acceptable. I had to keep a
close eye on their adjustment. They had more power than the Tektro CX720
cantilevers and lots more than the Avids. Eventually, one of the
spring-tension screws threaded (paradoxically, not the side that was highly
tensioned) on the front brake. I think they're a very good brake for the
price.

In comparison, using the same bike, fork, levers, and rims, the mini-moto
is well made, powerful, and well modulated in both dry and wet conditions
from the tops or the drops. The brakes have a sharply defined sculptural,
CNCish shape and are well finished. In the dry, they are powerful enough to
throw me over the handlebars from the tops. In the wet, they stop quickly
and surely. They have a light feel at the lever, and are easy to modulate.
The pads run much wider than on either the Tektro or the Avids. The noodle
and barrel adjuster are easy to use. The quick release is simple,
effective, and efficient. I'm using the supplied salmon Kool-Stop one-piece
long pads. These brakes are a pleasure; I also think they look good, but
that's irrelevant. I'd been contemplating getting a disc brake for my front
brake; I'm now reconsidering since these are so good.

I hope this was helpful.

all it was pretty easy to set up. Unfortunately, running the mini-moto with
the 50mm BA wasn't in the cards as the straddle cable was just too close to
the tire to be comfortable with. Still, if I ever decide to run 35mm's on
my Atlantis and had the money to spend, I'd seriously consider getting the
 mini-moto again.

For me, who have used dozens of bars, these are the ne plus ultra of road
bars:

http://www.compasscycle.com/handlebars_gb_maes_para.html

They are made by Nitto to more-than-Nitto standards -- they make Noodles
look crude. but the essential benefit is the shape: you can set them
parallel to the ground for comfortable hooks while maintaining the long,
flat ramp.

They are narrow by Rivendell standards -- I think those on my Rivs are 37
or 38 at the hoods, tho' they flare at the ends of the hooks -- but again,
bar none, these are the most comfortable bars I have used. Road use
implied, of course.

A helmet only kicks in when you crash, so the use-or-not-use decision
involves a calculation (inexact at best) as to the liklihood of losing
control of one's destiny . Riding like a racer thru rush hour traffic

[RBW] Re: Society Finally Catching up to Grant

2012-09-30 Thread Benz, Sunnyvale, CA
Since you brought up efficacy, do you have a peer-reviewed article to cite
regarding this? No, a cracked helmet is not a demonstration of its
efficacy; prove to yourself by cracking one in your hand and noticing that
it takes very little force to do it. And no, a bicycle helmet is
fundamentally different in design and efficacy than motorcycle helmets.

I'm essentially forced to wear a helmet most of the time even though I
don't believe in its claimed efficacy because of social pressures. I
believe helmets save scrapes and bruises but the amount of force it can
absorb is probably insignificant in a car-bike accident. Furthermore, I'm
old enough to not succumb to peer pressure. But I don't want to be
disadvantaged in any way if an accident happens (that a helmet may or may
not help) and I needed to recoup losses; I don't want to be assigned
partial blame and lose restitution simply because everyone knows helmets
save lives.

Despite the obvious, neurosurgeons are not experts in the analysis of force
and impact (these would be engineers), and they see a biased sample of
accidents that can skew their opinion. You wouldn't go to a neurosurgeon if
you just lightly bang your forehead, would you?

Finally, this is not a pro- or anti-helmet post. Wear or don't wear a
helmet; that's entirely your choice and none of my business. But if you
going to claim this or that to support your stance, you should bring some
data along for the ride.

[RBW] back to the list and biking on vacation

2012-09-30 Thread Seth Vidal
Hi,

I had turned off the list while I was on vacation but I had a great
time on vacation in japan. Alas I didn't get take any of my bikes with
me but I had an opportunity to ride a couple of rented bikes and an
afternoon bike tour while I was away. There's little riv-relationship
other than fantastic scenery and location but I wanted to share this
with folks who would appreciate it.

Pictures here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/skvidal/sets/72157631625589636/

I took a bike tour from these folks:
http://www.satoyama-cycling.com/

in the gifu prefecture of japan -the town is called hida-furukawa. The
tour ended up going all over the area and took about 4hours. As you
can see from the picture a fairly beautiful location. If anyone
happens to be in the area I'd recommend taking a tour from them. The
tour leader was fantastic and if you're japanese isn't very good,
don't worry, they speak english very well.

We biked up and down the region, refilled our water bottles from the
mouth of a mountain spring and then sat next to a shrine and watched a
storm start to roll into the area. It was kinda great.

if I had one of my own bikes I'm sure it would have been slightly more
comfortable but as it was, it was still pretty great.

thanks,
-sv

Will be interesting to hear the results!

Dreamy Draw area is nice. We have a condo near there. I offered my

Re: [RBW] What size Hunq

2012-09-30 Thread cyclotourist
I think it's dependent on how you plan on riding it. I'm between sized (54
and 58) with an 89 PBH and would need to decide if I wanted more standover
or the bars higher.

I need some advice/help on the right size Hunq to order. I'm 6'1 and have
a 91cm PBH. I also plan on running a Albatross bar. According to the Riv
website, I'd be on a 58cm, but I've been advised to get a 62cm, which
 sounds large. Many thanks.

[RBW] Re: Drop Bar Suggestions?

2012-09-30 Thread Philip Williamson
I like the flared drops of the classic WTB Dirt Drop bars and the Salsa
Woodchippers. I don't tend to like normal road drops, but I've only tried
SR Randonnr and Noodles in the last 10 years.
What other bars have you used or are you used to?

 you ride?
I know Noodles of course, and I've tried them in 3 different widths and
for some reason they don't hit home for me.
If you had to put a drop bar other than a Noodle on your Riv/Riv-ish bike,
 what would it be?
