Re: [RBW] Re: I rode my A. Homer Hilsen on a 600K brevet (a link to a blogpost)
I like my AHH for my rando rides - I have it all set up, but still ride a lot of commute miles on it. The farthest I've done so far is 200k, but have a goal to get a 300k in this year. I'm doing the slow but sure method of increasing mileage, and can't imagine a 600/1200k yet! I agree with Toshi - in any ride over 10 hours when fatigue is setting in, stability and comfort is the ticket! Brian Seattle, WA On Fri, Jun 14, 2013 at 12:59 AM, Toshi Takeuchi tto...@gmail.com wrote: Congrats to Iron Rider for a great ride. I missed a turn on a big downhill and had a couple of miles of bonus hills, so I know the feeling of being off-route and having to slog through the extra hills! In terms of Rivendell bikes and brevet bikes, I think all of them would be fine brevet bikes. I am a bit biased in that I think a 650b bike would be great due to the wide, comfortable tires you can put on it. That would put the AHH or a small San Marcos ahead of the Roadeo in my book. The Sam Hillbornes make a fine rando bike too. I rode a 600k on my AHH. I have a Roadeo as a go faster/no fender supported event bike, but it could definitely be outfitted with a Mark's rack and fenders to make a fine rando bike. I don't think the fact that it is lighter than an AHH should play much into the equation. If I were riding around with little sleep, then I think I might prefer the slightly more stable-handling AHH over the Roadeo, but that might come down to personal preference... [RBW] Re: crowdsounce advice on a set of wheels for atlantis
I would second everything Garth wrote. I have had great success with Mavic rims over the years. I also have a set of daVinci 26 rims (see davinci designs) on our tandem. The V shape is very strong and these wheels have held up amazingly well under the 400+ lbs of weight on a touring tandem. White hubs on both the Ram tandem. Trouble free. I'm sure the PW hubs are great too, but they are $100 more and unless you are headed to Patagonia probably overkill. Some people complain about the noise from the White hub but my experience has been that is entirely an in-shop experience, on the road, with the wind in you ear you wont yea them and even at slow speeds it becomes a hum. If you don't want a Phil cassette hub, the White Industry one's are pretty good. I'm all about minimal service on any bearings, so I'll pay more for cartridge bearing hubs every time instead of cups and cones. It's not surprising Shimano still uses them, since they have the legacy tooling around, it's more profitable for them that way. Nothing inherently wrong, or right about cups and cones, just a matter of how much one likes cleaning, adjusting and greasing hubs. Re: [RBW] Re: crowdsounce advice on a set of wheels for atlantis
The Sun and Mavic rims are both great - the used cyclocross tubular set I got from Patrick attests to that (and the American Classic hubs are amazing). My buddy's Dahon came with a set of Kinlin 23mm rims on American Classic wide flange hubs - I think this is the nicest wheelset I've ever seen. For the bike my daughter is building this summer, I bought a Kinlin wheelset from HoopsWheels.com (I got a close-out special from Brent on the 19mm Kinlin), but these are strong and light rims. After getting it, I immediately started adding new parts to it to expand its versatility. In the configuration as described below, the bike has been ridden less than 50 miles as you see from the tire tread. I could never make the bike comfortable for me, since 62 cm is simply not my frame size. I am 6'4. So the bike has been stored inside at my house mostly unridden with the following components, most of which are still in excellent condition: I widened the gear range with a Sugino XD in front and 13-28 in the rear shifted with LX front and Tiagra rear. I put on a new chain. 7 speed rear. Front is 24-36-46. Added Shimano bar-end 7-speed shifters Kept the original RX100 brake levers. Switched the stem to Technomic Deluxe 120 mm Switched the handlebars to Nitto Noodles Switched the seat to a Selle San Marcos Regal, titanium rails Upon learning that the frame wouldn't fit 700x28 tires easily in the front, I converted it to 650B by adding the following: Velocity Twin Hollow Wheelset from Rivendell. Tiagra hubs. Nifty Swifty tires - 650B x 32.8 mm - still in excellent condition Silver brakes - used less than 50 miles The frame has no dents that I can see. I have owned it since 2008 with no mishaps. There are a couple of small paint scratches that I could photograph for interested parties. There is no chainstay bridge in the rear, so fender-mounting might be less user-friendly there. Asking $850 plus shipping, unless...see below*... Paypal *Shipping/Delivery: If the interested buyer lives in Northern California, or anywhere between there and Seattle sorta near I-5, I could deliver the bike to him and spare the shipping, since I am about to head out on a road trip. Delivery to Oregon or Washington would be later in June, after June 20. **If no interested buyers live on the west coast, I'll have to put the sale on hold until I return from the road trip on July 1. Re: [RBW] Riv MUSA shorts compared to Patagonia baggies?
No advice on the MUSAs -- the only MUSA shorts I used were the original ones that were too tight, short, and too low rise; the new ones I hear are a lot baggier -- but I can advise that good quality, roomy-cut, khaki cut-downs make wonderful riding shorts -- better than the Ibex non-lined shorts that I also have, and better than the Patagonia sports shorts, too. Key qualities: High rise: you want a waistband high above the crotch. Too many dedicated cycling pants fail this way -- the Patagonia, tho' the Ibex is fine as to rise. Loose in the hips and thighs: old-style GAP (before they got cheap) pleated shorts are very good. A tight-sh and sturdy waistband with either a button or hook attachment -- snaps are no damned good. And of course a dense, tight weave. The ideal riding pants would be as above but made from dense nylon canvas, in black. I also like my on-sale Nashbar knickers, from tight, dense, nylon canvas, but I had to buy Large to get sufficient rise, and even after taking them in 2 they are still too large and require a tight belt. Re: [RBW] Your method of going around brake levers with cloth bar tape?
I have the same basic setup... non aero levers on mustache bars. The outcome of my wrapping might not be as clean as you'd like, but I used two cheaters: http://imgur.com/a/1zB7t I've gone under the clamp before as well, so I can say that does work, but I wasn't that careful this time. On Fri, Jun 7, 2013 at 5:06 PM, jinxed hbcl...@yahoo.com wrote: I picked up some Newbaums tape recently with plans to try cloth...once again. I've done this a few times in the past with different bars, but never been happy with the result for two reasons. First off I found it too thin for comfort, and on top of that could never get it wrapped well around the levers. I always ended up with gaps in one place and all bunched up in others. This really bugs me because I pride myself with normal cork wrap. I can wrap super clean and even with the cheater piece or without using the figure eight approach. Using the narrow, less stretchy cloth I end up with a mess. Ive tried adding a cheater, and even a double figure eight that just created a big mass. I have been mentally preparing a plan of attack while waiting on my repaint. I'm going back to my tried and true mustache bar with old dia-comp non-aero levers. My thinking was this: If I tighten down the levers on the bar, then place some tape over the clamp to hold it in place while I back off the lever body completely, I would have a much smaller obstacle to wrap around with the cloth. Could I essentially leave the threaded portion of the clamp sticking out and then bolt the body back down on top of it once done? I plan to pre wrap the ends of the bar up to the levers with some left over cateye cloth to solve the cush issue. The nittos plethora of curves dont help this issue, but the smaller bodies of the old diacomp do a little. FYI, I do not wrap the shifter cables coming from the bar ends, I just leave them dangle. Dumb idea? Anyone have a better technique for going around the brake lever body bolted in place? Pictures, procedures, postulations? Oh and before you suggest it, I attempted the Jim Varnum harlequin method onceyea...took me a few beers and some therapy to get over that episode in the garage. Re: [RBW] Riv MUSA shorts compared to Patagonia baggies?
I have the Baggies and the old and new MUSA shorts. The Baggies are shorter, more form fitting, and don't have a gusseted crotch. I use them for everything BUT riding- running, swimming, kayaking, etc. For riding the MUSAs are much better mostly because of the length and gusseted crotch. I have run in them as well and think they are more stylish than the Baggies. I am much more inclined to wear them to just hang out. The Baggies are a little too short if you ask me. Re: [RBW] We may have some neat news soon - Blug
I just read the Blug post. Abstracting from the good news at the end, and tawkin' about the bulk of it, I must say that I like it and agree with about 93.764% of it. In particular: I think that long chainstays make a bike more comfortable over rough surfaces. I have continually been pleased and surprised at how well my two 44.5 cm-stayed fixies float over bad stuff even with skinny tires. Of course, skinny tires that are very supple (the original 559 Turbos, Michelin Pro Races) are surprisingly comfortable, too, at least at my weight and pressures. I must say that I don't really care about recycling, and I think this is wrong: a bike that weighs 25 pounds and is useful is some combination of stripped down/obsessed over/too close to a dysfunctional edge. My errand Riv weighs less than that -- say 24 lb -- with Sackville Medium, complex repair kit, full size HPX, and lights. It's a fixed gear, of course, but adding a useful range of gears - say a 14-32 7 speed -- and a rear derailleur would add only a lb or so. For 'round town commuting, even in rolling terrain and winds with loads, no one needs more range than 86 -- 38. Even if you need a triple, 26 lb is not at all hard. My Fargo with fat wheels comes in at about 32 lb. Also, what kinda bolt head is that on the QR (NOT the cbale clamp bolt, but the bolt holding on the QR)? It isn't Allen. Torx? Do I need to adjust this ever? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
