Re: [RBW] Re: Beausage Reminder
I was just out swapping handlebars (thanks Hugh!) and had to pull a Wald basket to do it. I noticed that the stays on this basket are definitely different than the ones on the bike that collapsed on me. Those stays had a much larger (~four inch) flat section with multiple hub drillings on the end of them. That's where it buckled on me. The newer kind that I was just looking at have a solid curved stay all the way down to the single hole at the end. I'm presuming they are much stronger. On Sun, Apr 5, 2015 at 12:18 PM, Patrick Moore bertin...@gmail.com wrote: I can vouch for the truth that the Wald Newsboy doesn't sway; it's very secure. As to how the bike handles with such a basket on it, with load, that depends on the bike. I once put one on a Schwinn World Tour and loaded it with 2 cinderblocks, which fit very well in respect of volume. I actually managed to ride the bike a block before quitting in terror -- simply keeping the rear wheel on the ground was hard. But the basket didn't sway; the problem was grossly biased weight distribution and horrible things done to the steering. On Sat, Apr 4, 2015 at 11:57 AM, ian m darkgizz...@gmail.com wrote: Will, how is sway from a heavy loaded front basket a function of bicycle geometry? Seems to me it's more a function of the way the basket attaches to the bicycle, which are two points near the stem and two point at the front axle, which doesn't make for a particularly laterally stiff design. Similar to the American newsboys of yesteryear, the French porteur's carried heavy loads of newspapers on the front of their bicycles, but with stiffer steel racks. In my experience a heavy load on a one of these racks is much easier to handle with all other aspects (wheel strength, pneumatic cushion) remaining the same. A basket attached to the rack as on the Hunqapillar recently posted on Riv Blug is like the best of both worlds, especially since heavier loads can be attached by pannier closer to the front wheel's axle. On Saturday, April 4, 2015 at 9:10:11 AM UTC-7, Will wrote: Not my experience. We routinely carried between 65-70 newspapers in the Wald front delivery baskets. And loaded the back baskets on Sundays when the papers were twice as large and heavy. Never a problem. Swaying is a function of bicycle geometry, wheel strength (spokes+dish), and pneumatic cushion. Our paper bikes looked a lot like these... http://www.worksmancycles.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/indbikes.html When you look at the industrial newsboy you will note both baskets (front and back) are angled towards the frame center. You will also note the head and seat tube angles and chain stay length. That's the way to keep load distribution inside of the axles. If the balance point creeps outside the axle, you have major vibration issues. The bike shimmies, wobbles, and is hard to steer. Re: [RBW] Re: WTB/WTT: 9 or 10 speed Shimano RD, long cage; bar end shifters, 9 or 10 speed
Well the M772 is a good choice for either 9 or 10 spd bar ends or other road shifters. I am running a M772 Mid cage with 9spd barends and it shifts flawlessly. 9spd is cheaper, more durable and friction is still an option on the bar ends. I'm running it as a 42-29 double in front and 18spds seems plenty for me. -Dave J On 4/5/15, Christian christian.w.mcmil...@gmail.com wrote: Thanks Dave. Shimano 10 spd bar ends are no longer compatible with Shimano 10 spd Mtn derailleurs. You will want to find a 9spd rear derailleur. I think the 772 is actually a 9spd derailleur. If your frame doesn't have adjusters I would recommend finding a R derail that has an adjuster. Re: [RBW] Re: Thinking about Clem Wheels - What rim for 60mm tires?
Aha, 31 mm is much more appropriate; I thought I read 25 on the website. SnoCats here: http://616fab.com/wheel/snowcat-wheels/ Note that mine were the SL -- for super light!! -- version, with quarter-size holes around the rim bed. Ebay has them from time to time, tho' this sale ended: http://www.ebay.com/itm/SnowCat-29-inch-SL-Mountain-Bike-Rims-44mm-wide-700c-X-44-Snow-Cat-32h-rim-/321082774570 Note that I've found that Schwalbe tires fit very loosely on the SLs; the Big Apples, for example, when first installed and uninflated, would literally fall off if you held the rim sideways and shook it. But I never hand problems with them coming off; and I pumped them to as high as 35 psi (rock hard for those tires) and rode them as low as 12 in front. The trick was to get enough air in them to force the beads down and seat themselves; less than 10 psi. For tubeless the shop had to build up the rim bed with Gorilla tape. [RBW] Re: Beausage Reminder
Thanks for the question. Take a good look at this picture. It was posted earlier in the thread. https://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/15464068173 Notice where the weight is. It is in front of the front axle. This unweights the frame, overweights the struts, and seriously compromises steering. This position is a function of geometry, not basket or rack attachment. You could weld the struts to the fork blades and the load would still be unstable. I have an Atlantis. For all of its goodness it will never handle loads like the Worksman link I posted above, neither will the Hunq. On Sunday, April 5, 2015 at 10:48:39 AM UTC-5, ian m wrote: Will, how is sway from a heavy loaded front basket a function of bicycle geometry? Similar to the American newsboys of yesteryear, the French porteur's carried heavy loads of newspapers on the front of their bicycles, but with stiffer steel racks. In my experience a heavy load on a one of these racks is much easier to handle with all other aspects (wheel strength, pneumatic cushion) remaining the same. Re: [RBW] Re: Beausage Reminder
I can vouch for the truth that the Wald Newsboy doesn't sway; it's very secure.
