Re: [RBW] Rivet Saddles

My experience with SA v. Rivet is all about stretch. SA Never stopped
stretching on me - every ride - and every ride required turns of the
stretch bolt.
this much after the first 8 miles

(luckily, the stop was a bike shop and brewpub)

The Rivet stopped stretching after 100 miles,

still stretches a bit during a ride, but now relaxes and recovers to a good
base set and I haven't turned the stretch bolt in a year.

Forum has a single moderator with a busy life who does this as a labor of
love. We are very lucky to have him and this forum.

On topic - I was a very early Rohloff adopter - deciding on Rohloff early
in the process of my first custom build.

The technology is fascinating. The quality undeniable.

That said, I never warmed to riding a bike with so much weight concentrated
in one spot. I ultimately sold the bike to a favorite local mechanic who
has continues to ride it through all the variety of weather Chicago throws
at us.

For my part, I have gone to 1x set ups and single speeds which match my
riding preference much better than IGH. My current city bike has a
Velosteel single speed coaster hub which I grow to love more with every
passing ride.

[RBW] Re: Bleriot with Middle Ear Problem?

2015-10-28 Thread Jeremy Till
Things to check:

1. Inspect the fork and frame closely for cracks, maybe by giving them a
thorough wipe-down.
2. You didn't mention a front rack, but if there is one, inspect that
closely and make sure all its fasteners are tight.
3.. Headset too loose? Put weight on the saddle, lock the front brake and
try rocking the bike forward and back. If you feel a knock, the headset is
probably too loose.
4. Headset too tight/worn/indexed? Seems likes you checked this already.
It can be subtle and hard to feel, but if it's causing steering issues it
shouldn't be that subtle. My test is lift the bike (with handlebars and
front wheel installed) or hang it such that the front end is angling down
45 deg or so, pull the handlebars to one side and release. If the fork
releases and freely swings past center before smoothly penduluming to it's
natural lowest point, you're good. If the headset is indexed, you'll see
it "notch" into place as it comes back to center. If the headset's way too
tight or worn it won't swing back at all.
5. Spoke tension on both wheels: Spokes evenly and sufficiently tight all
the way around? No broken spokes?
6. Tires evenly seated?

RE: [RBW] Re: Rohloff IGH Questions

2015-10-28 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J
One more comment about my Bombaloff/Rohladil.

Because the frame wasn't built with the Rohloff hub in mind, I had to do two
things that would be unnecessary on a bike designed for the hub: (i) install a
torque arm, to prevent rotation in the dropout; and (ii) use Rohloff's chain
tensioner. Neither one has caused the slightest problem, and I loved my Bomba
from the moment I climbed on it (it was the first of 8 or 9 Rivs I've owned),
so I have no regrets about these "fixes." When I told Stephen Bilenky (who had
just repainted the Bomba frame for me) that I was going to try a Rohloff hub in
it, he asked me why I hadn't had him put in an eccentric bottom bracket. Duh.
Now that failure I do kind of regret.

I have to say, though – a Bombadil with a Rohloff hub is da bomb for loaded
touring. And a conversation-starter to boot.

The 'squirreliest' thinng I've felt, is a crank-arm coming loose; I doubt

Not that I think these are the problem, I'm still onboard w/ Jeremy's list,

Something is wrong. The cables, I agree, are probably way too tight. As
for the "non-shifting" issue, try removing the external shift box (Assuming
you have the external shift box.) Put the bike in the workstand and try
pedaling and shifting with a box end wrench. If the probably persists,
there is a demon in that hub. Maybe contact Cycle Monkey and send it in
for service.

2015-10-28 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J
Wow – what a sweet-looking bike. I wondered if Steve Cole was the Steve I
remembered from the Boathouse – now I know.

I have zero issues shifting my Rohloff, except from 7th to 8th, and even then
only when I try to make that shift under load. All other shifts can be made at
rest or under anything short of a full load (of course better not to shift an
IGH under any significant load – I'm just reporting that it works if you do, as
long as the shift cable is adjusted correctly). Your experience is definitely
NOT normal. You shouldn't have to do anything to make the hub disappear when
riding – to me, the ease of shifting – any time, without any advance planning
-- is half the benefit of the hub. (Of course, thinking ahead for upcoming
shifts is fun, too.)

Like others, I would suggest that you loosen the cables. If I recall
correctly, I couldn't get mine to shift when I first installed it, and that was
the solution. That's several years back, though, so the memory may be faulty.

Subject: [RBW] Re: Rohloff IGH Questions

Well, I guess I'll try to explain my situation. I hope others find it of
interest.

Background. For a few years, I've been doing a deep dive on bicycles and
cycling, a source of constant and great enjoyment. For years, I commuted to
work on my 1968 Falcon San Remo, a bike that was my very first purchase with
the first credit card I ever had (credit limit: $200; bike cost: $195). As
part of my deep dive, I had this bike restored. I also have a 1973 Gitane
tandem, also recently restored. When I began my dive, I purchased a
Kickstarter bamboo bike (see: www.herobike.com; check
out the Semester bike). I found it great in some respects -- it had 650B Col
de Vie tires which made for an extremely comfortable ride. The frame, however,
suffered from shimmy in the front end, which a need-bearing headset did not
fix, so, I started to look for a more satisfying ride. I found it in an A
Homer Hilsen (59cm), which I've been riding with great pleasure. (Tom, we met
at Fletcher's Boat House, when you and the group that Pondero put together
headed up the C I didn't go along. I admired your Rohloff-converted
Bombadil.) The AHH in addition to replacing the bamboo bike also replaced a
Specialized Rubaix Comp and a Scott city bike. I guess I'm always in search of
the perfect ride.

When I heard about the Rohloff hub, I thought this might be the key. It seems
like Daniel, I had a fascination with the design, German engineering, and I had
been riding a bike with an 8-speed Shimano Alfine IGH (the aforementioned
Scott). I liked the Shimano a great deal; the only issue for me was that it
did not have sufficient range (I've since sold that bike) and thought the
14-speed Rohloff would address this. I found a used Rohloff, purchased it,
and set it aside. I wasn't sure what to do with it; I expected some
opportunity would present itself. When it did, I thought, I could learn how
the Rohloff compared to my AHH drivetrain, a Shimano Deore Riv standard
buildup. It has even occurred to me that after some time riding both bikes, I
would settle on one and make it my life's ride. We'll see.

I purchased a Simpleone frame (58 cm) off the RBW list a couple of months ago
to have it built up with my Rohloff. I'd seen a similar conversion so I knew
it could be done with some adjustments. A framebuilder did respace and reset
(make them parallel again) the rear dropouts to accommodate the wider hub
(135mm vs 120mm). I then had the bike built up mostly with components of my
choosing -- Paul Cantis, Albatross handlebars, Brooks Saddle, Nitto stem,
seatpost, and racks Shimano bottom bracket, SP dynamo and the Rohloff
drivetrain, importantly with a Berthoud shifter rather than the standard
Rohloff shifter. The shifter choice was mostly aesthetic -- all of the other
components are silver, so I wanted the shifter also to be silver -- the Rohloff
shifter is black. I also had the hub serviced and added an external gear
mechanisms. With the QR axle it came with, the external gear mechanism would
make fixing flats pretty much like other bikes.

So, what are my issues? First, I find the shifter, a grip shifter, incredibly
difficult to turn from one gear to the next, up or down. I don't think I'm
stronger or weaker than most riders. Still, if the shifter were any more
difficult to turn, it would come close to seeming frozen. Second, when I
change from almost any gear to the next highest or lowest, I often, but not
always, find that for a revolution or so of the pedals I feel like I am not in
gear. When this happens, if I stop pedaling or pedal backwards I then can
pedal forward in the gear I have chosen. I've read about the problem with
shifting from 7th to

[RBW] Re: Rohloff IGH Questions

2015-10-28 Thread CyclesNoel
So thanks to the moderators for putting my first reply in so late it makes
me look like moron. :-P

WRT to the OP's question: I agree that the problem is probably that the
cables are too tight. Backing off both adjustors half a turn or so will
probably make a big difference. Of course, the Rohloff is never as
quick/positive as a well set-up indexing derailleur, but I find that a
half-revolution of "soft" pedaling is enough to allow a positive change,
even between seven and eight.

I have found, though, that on hot days my hands are sweaty enough that
turning the slick rubber shifter can be tough. I eventfully glued some
skateboard tape onto the shifter. This looks like hell, but works a treat.

HTH,

Noel

[RBW] The Riv Allrounder at Zion

Hello all,
My wife's family has owned land adjacent to Zion for decades and we made a
quick trip down there. I took the Allrounder for the riding from our farm

[RBW] Re: Bleriot with Middle Ear Problem?

2015-10-28 Thread 'jinxed' via RBW Owners Bunch
I've been on two bikes that felt exactly like that, one while seated, the
other while out of the saddle.

The seated one was an old Raleigh that the drive side chainstay had broken
at the dropout. So even though it was the back wheel shifting, it showed up
in the steering. Much like piloting a tandem when the stoker moves around
excessively.

The out of the saddle one was an Alan bonded aluminum road bike. The seat
tube had actually come unbonded at the BB "lug" and would pull out
completely when standing and the bb would wag side to side. It would settle
back in and look normal soon as you sat down or got off the bike. Took a
while before happened to look down while out of the saddle. Really weird
sensation that was hard to pinpoint. The steering just got real loose
feeling, so I was focused on the front of the bike.

I would certainly fine tooth comb the frame if the headset turns out to be
fine.

I wouldn't ride it till you get it figured out. I agree it sounds like a
possible headset but I too have have similar issues when I have broken a
frame (chainstay) and had a fork crack at the crown. Hope it's something
easy but risking a frame failing completely isn't worth it.

[RBW] Tail wind, head wind

2015-10-28 Thread JohnS
Yesterday I got out for a really nice ride of about 38 miles. The day
had an overcast sky with temps around 50, which made for a pleasant if not
cool ride. We're in the middle of fall here in eastern PA with all the
trees in various shades of oranges, reds, yellows and browns. My ride
started out very well. I felt great and was making it up hills in the
cruising gear on the Quickbeam. I thought that I must be getting in better
shape since some of the hills seamed easier than they had been earlier in
the season. That all changed when I got to the mid point of the ride and
turn east onto Lyon Valley road into a head wind. Ugh! No wonder why the
hills were easier, I had a tail wind the whole way up to that point and the
rest of the ride would more or less be into a head wind. I don't know which
is worse, to ride into a head with the hope that I'll have a tail wind for
the ride home or finding out that my sudden improvement in performance was
only due to a gentle push from behind by a tail wind.

Hope you're enjoying the fall weather for riding as well,
JohnS

I am building mine as a first 26 inch size bike as my boys grow into that size.
The first one 9 years old) will get it as soon as I get it built up, assuming
he can fit!
Cockpit: dirt drop stem and swept back bars so that he can reach. Cotton grips.
Shifting: simple thumbie for a 1x8 with Altus derailer.
Crank: 165mm, 36t and a chainguard.
Cassette: shimano 11-30
Wheels: basic wheels from Taylor wheels. Thank you strong dollar. Basic shimano
Dynamo hub up front.
Tires: Pasela 26x1.75 (the smallest I should go, said Riv, but I want to keep
this bike small).
Dynamo hub up front.
Brakes Avid v brakes.
Levers shimano mountain.
Fenders: p55 sks
Lights: b and m lyt up front, topline plus on back
Racks: working on that. I have a pletscher for the rear and a Gamoh porter for
the front, but might be too much.

Looking forward to getting this thing and taking wy too long to build it
up.

Certainly lots of mention of the differences between Joe &
Atlantislonger stays, more tire clearance, etc. The Atlantis has been
around since 1999.75. Maybe with the design philosophy leaning toward
longer stays, this seems to be the direction of the future. The real
capper is getting a complete bike for less than the price of a frame &
fork. Hard to argue with that.

No regrets here. But that doesn't mean that I wouldn't love to have a Joe

[RBW] Bleriot with Middle Ear Problem?

2015-10-28 Thread Joe Bernard
This is probably a silly question, but does the front tire have enough air?
What you're describing sounds like a tire flopping back and forth on the rim.
Low tire pressure - especially on a big-ish tire - can still look rideable
until it's almost completely flat.

Any Clem buyers regretting their decision? I'm waiting for my 59 Clem but the
58 Joe seems appealing. A lot of the same positive features (long chain stays,
tire clearance, high bars, load carrying capacity), but it seems the joe could
be set up as a drop bar fast tourer. I feel like the Clem geometries prevent it
from being a go fast or drop bar bike, but that being said I haven't even

Re: [RBW] Re: Clems have shipped!

2015-10-28 Thread Bill Lindsay
Those rinko headsets have a cartridge bearing that is sitting inside the
cups, similar, but not identical to Shimano. With Shimanos, the cartridge
falls right out. With 'normal' ball bearing headsets there's a ring with
ball bearings that you slather with grease and install. The headset on
your Clem will have the cartridge bearings in there already. That's why
there seemed to be a missing step.

[RBW] Advice on internal gear hubs

2015-10-28 Thread Patrick Moore
Well, it looks as if the return by the shop of the 36-hole S3X hub I didn't
order (I ordered a 32) is a forlorn hope, as Vaughn just checked all the
suppliers and they have only 36s -- very odd for a hub of this sort, no?

If i don't have it built into a 28 hole rim, and return it, I may order a
more standard IG hub and I'd like y'all's advice on that.

1. Which internal gear hub, beside the S3X, has the lowest drag in
non-direct gears? I should think that a 3 speed would have less, all else
equal, than a 7 or 8?

2. Does said low drag hub come in 32 hole with aluminum shell?

3. Of the newer 8 speed hubs, which is best in terms of:
> Drag
> small gaps, expecially in the middle (I'd like to run gaps of no more
than 10 gear inches in the 60 to 80 inch range; 60-70-80 would be doable,
tho' my beau ideal is 60-65-70-75-80).

'Nother question: a SA kickback would be very nice, except that it is over-
instead of underdrive, so that with the 46 or 48 rings on my Rivendells,
I'd have to run a 22 t sprocket (the largest SA permits) which in turn
means that I'd need to splice in a section of chain to eke out the axle
movement in the dropouts.

So (this is the question): Is there any kickback hub that:
> is underdrive or that has less gear up than 137%;
> that takes 3/32, readily available sprockts?

I suppose I could just have a second chain, and swap that out when I swap
the rear wheel, but it would be nice to have a wheel that just slots in
without further effort required.

RE: [RBW] Re: Rohloff IGH Questions

2015-10-28 Thread Daniel M
Another multi-Rohloff owner chiming in here. First, regarding shifting effort,
it definitely requires more effort than a derailer or a Shimano IGH, but the
reason is that you are feeling the effort required to change the gears in the
hub itself, as opposed to just advancing the indexing in the shifter. That is
to say, if you disconnect the shift box from the hub, the shifter will simply
freewheel back and forth through its range. If you feel a shift, you got a
shift, unlike the Shimano IGHs, which have a nice snappy click that only means
that the shift cable moved; sometimes you are left waiting for he shift to take
place. If, however, the shifting effort is as you describe, something is wrong
with the cable or the shifter. I recently replaced my cable and housing for the
first time after four years of touring and daily commuting, in addition to
replacing my original twist shifter with the 2nd generation shifter (I kept the
original as a backup), and the shift effort is reduced dramatically. It was
perfectly fine before, even though the cable was starting to fray - now it's
easier and has less free play.

As for momentary freewheeling, this should never happen and the hub is covered
by a lifetime warranty regardless of whether or not you are the original buyer.
Contact Cycle Monkey; they will either fix it or swap in a new (maybe
refurbished) gear mechanism into your existing hub/wheel. Of course, pausing
while shifting cures most problems, but the hub is designed to never freewheel.
And that's precicely why I'm so in love with my Rohloffs - the failure mode is
still a workable condition that would allow me to finish any trip. Very low
temperatures can cause the gear oil to gel which can result in freewheeling. In
those conditions, you are advised to run a 50/50 mixture of the normal oil and
the light cleaning oil. In extreme cold applications, you can run 100% cleaning
oil, but if the bike is brought into room temperature, some of the thin oil can
leak past the seals.

My first Rohloff was a Craigslist find, new in box with all the documentation
but between 5 and 10 years old. When I brought it to Cycle Monkey, they
commented that my serial number was in the 10,000s, whereas production was past
100,000 at that point. I originally had a wheel built and had the system
retrofitted on to my old Gary Fisher Hoo Koo e Koo for touring with a Bob
trailer. This required both the long torque arm and the chain tensioner. Both
are so extremely well thought-out and executed that they never caused any
hassle whatsoever. I did have a bit of freewheeling and Cycle Monkey made a
small adjustment which fixed the problem.

Eventually, I realized that I wanted a fully rigid touring bike so I could run
front panniers, so I went with a Thorn Raven Tour. Without any insult intended
to Riv, it is a lot like a TIGed, Rohloff-specific Bombadil. It has a massive
twin-plate fork crown, a big, simple, eccentric bottom bracket so no tensioner
is needed, and an OEM 2 rear dropout which makes the torque arm unnecessary. I
have done everything on this bike. Thousands of miles of fully loaded and
self-supported tours including many miles of rough dirt roads and trails, plus
everyday commuting and grocery getting, and the occasional cargo extravagance,
like strapping a gas grill to the rear rack and riding it to a park for a
picnic, or a case of beer in bottles on the rear and a full load of groceries
in the panniers. In all that time, zero dropped chains, ever. Zero missed
shifts, ever. Total maintenance in four years is two oil changes and one
replacement of cables and housing.

The bike is a tank, however; around 39lbs without anything on the racks. So I
became obsessed with Surly's Troll, found a frame on Craigslist, and then found
the ultimate Craigslist miracle: a Rohloff-equipped mountain bike for $1100. I
bought it, removed the wheelset and drivetrain, converted it to single-speed,
and sold it for about $600. My Troll is now up and running with Rohloff
wheelset, 26"x60mm Schwalbe Big Apples, and Salsa Woodchipper bars. It's my
first self-built, self spec'd bike, and it is so fantastically versatile it
blows my mind. Slick tires and drop bars means long days on pavement are no
problem. The huge air volume means fire roads and singletrack are completely in
the realm of possibility with a little drop in air pressure. And the
reliability of the Rohloff means I just jump on and ride with no thought to
shifting, ever.

Re: [RBW] Tail wind, head wind

2015-10-28 Thread Patrick Moore
This is generally the way riding is in NM -- wide open spaces that the wind
just sweeps through. It used to bug me especially when I was getting used
to fixed gear riding, but I've long since adapted. However, as I get older
and warmups become more important, I've been using the flip side smaller
gears a bit more than I did as a buff 50 something when the rides starts
out with a headwind.

Actually, it gets worse out here, since the winds often shift from east to
south to west in the early afternoon; so that, if you time your ride just
right, you can have a headwind both ways. Back when I commuted to work, I'd
often have a light wind off the mountains in the morning to complement the
6-7 miles of climbing (gradual), and then have a strong westerly in the
evening to cancel the benefit of the down hill run.

My funniest headwind experience, in retrospect, was the April 25 mile or so
lunchtime ride I took on east 66 out of Gallup, with a howling westerly --
ran out of gears in the big ring, maintaining 28+ mph.

Turned around, ran out of gears the other way (road triple with a 26" or so
low), ran out of water, and when I got back to the office, cramped in my
hamstrings when I stood upright and cramped in my abs when I bent over.

It was this sort of wind that let me climb Tramway in a 75" fixed gear
without undue effort, and kept me pedaling to maintain speed on the return.

Re: [RBW] Advice on internal gear hubs

2015-10-28 Thread Eric Norris
Patrick:

I’m not sure if you can buy them separately, but Brompton designed and S-A
builds a 3-speed hub to go with their folding bikes. It’s called the BWR
(Brompton Wide Range) and offers a combination of pretty broad range of gears
and a simpler, more robust set of internals that they also claim is more
efficient. On the BWR, the middle gear is direct drive; low is underdrive and
high is overdrive.

Here’s a fairly technical and detailed discussion of the internals of the BWR:

[RBW] Re: Joe Appaloosa geometry

2015-10-28 Thread BSWP
The new J-A looks great, so many nice details all worked out. I had been
leaning to a custom, for touring, but finances have been tight, and so that
project is delayed. Does anyone know if the Joe will be offered eventually
as just frame & fork?

I'd rather have a tailwind on the way out. I more often than not find the
headwind I fought on the way out didn't turn into a tailwind for the return.

I *love* the bars. Very cool looking, and in that "reach straight back at
you" shape which seems to be the only one I can ride more than 5 miles. The
fork crown is pretty sweet, too. I love the bike..we'll see about the
color. I'm not a big fan of Sam Blue, but the Clem Blue is awesome. I'm in
no position to fork over 2100 bucks right now, so I won't be one of the
early-adopter trusting people; I look forward to seeing them next year.

Re: [RBW] Rivet Saddles

The Rivets to me feel very "rounded" on top across the back, much more
so than SAAs. Also, SAA to me feel rather "sharp" at the edges and the
edges are horizontal, whereas the Rivets (and Brooks and Berthoud) have
vertical edges.

58cm & 62cm are double top-tube.
I'm glad I went with the Clem frameset - complete bikes just don't appeal
to me as I usually have enough parts to build up a couple frames. If this
were offered as a frameset only in the future, I'd definitely be interested.

[RBW] Re: Rivet Saddles

2015-10-28 Thread Bill M.
I was an early adopter, having bought a brown Pearl Ti from Deb at their
debut at NAHBS in Sacramento a few years ago. It has been in continuous
use since then and I like it a lot. It fits me better than a Brooks (of
which I own five of various models and vintages, none of them being used
right now) due to being wide enough at the sit bones but narrow in the nose
so I don't get thigh rub. The Rivet leather is quite hard, mine has hardly
stretched at all and seems like it will last a very long time. The comfort
is all from the shape, don't expect much cush.

The SA is quite different. You can't expect it to keep a flat shape like a
Brooks or Rivet, it's meant to be a hammock and tensioning it flat will
just stretch it to death as many have found. My SA lives on a bike with a
fairly upright position and it works well enough for me like that. I can't
really ride on the SA in any kind of tuck.
