Very nice build. Reminds me of an early 80's Schwinn Le Tour mixte that I
built a few years back for a neighbor, great riding bike, similar pseudo
mixte tubing.

She didn't get a full test ride but did take it around the block a couple
times, seems like a winner. Nov in the mid-atlantic is a frustrating time
to get a new bike w/ the short days and cooling weather but I'm sure we'll
get out and about at some point over the next week.

Mark thanks for the link, I hadn't read that article though the core
recommendation is similar to one of the Park Manual methods. After finding
the first chain to short I chose to go conservative and iterate 1 to 2
links at a time as I only had single 'super link' and was using the chain
tool to try and retain a pin for connecting extra links which I'm only
so-so at.

There is no getting around the chainstay length, I'll have to do some
side-by sides w/ the saluki and bombadil soon. It's the biggest bike Erika
has from a maneuvering around the garage perspective for sure!

glad it worked. I used a 121mm SKF with a 2.5mm spacer for a cyclotouriste
triple (Boulder recommended 126mm). I much prefer the narrower spindle,
especially on the left side - otherwise, it looks like the left side crank
is in the next county. My chain line came out perfect. I had one
compromise, the TA bolt heads tapped the polymer bushing for my double
kickstand. I took a dremel tool and carved a shallow groove in the polymer
to solve that.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell sightings

2015-11-09 Thread Will
Don't think so. The mini-Abus is a serious deterrent. The U piece does not
rotate like the other brands. One has to cut both sides of the U bar to
free the bike. And the pits make removing wheels or adjusting the seat
almost impossible. If you put a pit-stopper in the stem bolt, they can't
remove/adjust the bars. Even if one defeats the Abus... re-sale incentive
is quite poor: can't fix a flat, can't adjust the cockpit. There's no
reason for a thief to want a bike they cannot sell.

I have built six wheelsets using the Ghisallo wooden rims, and they've all
stayed quite true. (Well, the three I still have access to have, and I haven't
gotten any complaints from the owners of the others.) The rims are less
pliable laterally than aluminum rims, so maybe that's the explanation. Anyway,
I haven't had any trouble. But I don't think any of those wheelsets has more
than a thousand miles on them.

been awaiting a Canadian-made folding bike. Yours is a cautionary tale for

[RBW] How to clean a Brooks saddle?

2015-11-09 Thread Lungimsam
Rode my Brooks, shower-capped, in the rain for many ours this weekend.
Didn't get soaked, just a little sprinkled at quick stops when cap wasn't
on earlier in the day, but spent most of the time under a shower cap. Took
off shower cap for the car bike rack ride home.

Next day, I noticed some dirty patches on the leather. Not sure if it is
mold or just dirt.

Stuck on good. Cannot rub off with a regular dry towel, and didn't want to
wet the saddle.

Anyway, how to clean it off without wetting the saddle?
Any tricks?
Or just proofhide it and forget it?

I run the extra light version of the Barlow Pass on my Sam mounted on Grand
Bois rims. One puncture early on due to a glass shard and several due to goat
heads. Now running Mr. Tuffy's liners with no discernible impact on the ride

[RBW] Niles Canyon Ride

2015-11-09 Thread Surlyprof
A couple of weeks ago our lovely Niles Canyon that stretches between my
quaint little neighborhood of Niles in Fremont, CA and Sunol, CA was
closed. The first day was for Caltrans maintenance but the second day was
for a full day Roll and Stroll through the canyon. There were roving bands
of Charlie Chaplains since many a silent movie was shot in the canyon
including Chaplain's "The Tramp" and Essenay's Bronco Billy westerns.
There were also people coming in from all over the bay area to enjoy a
carless Niles Canyon. Although Niles Canyon is a popular riding area, it
can be a little tight in spots creating the occasional white-knuckle
encounter with passing cars so a closed canyon was greeted with great
enthusiasm. A group of Bay Area Riv Riders were meeting in Pleasanton to
start their ride to the canyon. Since I lived in Niles, I rode up to
Pleasanton to meet them. After a slight delay at the Pleasanton BART, the
group rolled down Foothill Road to the Pleasanton Ridge State Park where I
was waiting to join them. It was a gorgeous day for a ride in the canyon.
As we rode through the canyon to climb Palomares Road, the Niles Canyon
Railway train passed overhead and we were greeted by the waving passengers.
Our Palomares climb was interrupted near the top when we decided to to try
the group's first mid-ride wine stop at the Westover Winery in Palomares
Canyon. I didn't get any pictures in the winery since we were busy
chatting and tasting but I did get a few pictures of the inventive ways
Tony and Evan attached bottles to their bikes for the ride home. We parted
ways at the summit and each enjoyed our own wild descents down different
sides of Palomares Road.

Thanks to Tony, Evan, Roger, Daniel and Riv's own Joe Bundik for a nice
afternoon ride. Here are the

[RBW] Re: Show me your Garage/Workshop/Cave/Storage Spaces

2015-11-09 Thread Surlyprof
Drew,

I hope your newly acquired garage space is coming along nicely. I would
suggest looking at Pinterest for ideas using search terms such as "garage
organization", "workshop organization", etc. I've gotten a few good ideas
for the shop there. Been trying to get my converted garage now studio and
shop fixed up since a ventilation problem created a mold issue in the
ceiling. There is still a lot of things to fix but now that the studio is
re-insulated and the garage reorganized it is at least usable again. I
don't have any dedicated bike shop space since I do a lot of woodworking
and Industrial Design modelmaking in there and design and professor work in
the studio portion. I did arrange the shop space so there is ample room to
work on the bike. Next challenge is to rebuild and re-insulate the shop
ceiling. Here are my photos: https://goo.gl/photos/4zeTsVdQRYwdJZzr8
Needless to say... it will never see a car!

Re: [RBW] Re: Coffeeneuring ride.

2015-11-09 Thread Don Compton
Hugh,
In '84 I started riding to replace running. I was a college golfer and
played after college in amateur tournaments. I had some serious back issues
and decided to replace running with cycling after watching Grewal winning
the Olympic road race in Costa Mesa. Golf became less fun and cycling
became a passion. The rides that our group did always included a stop in
the middle of the ride. To me it was the most important part of the ride (
conversation, camaraderie ). I was never a racer, but have ridden with a
lot of folks that raced bikes. But, for me to think a ride is a good one,
the stop in the middle of the ride has to be good.
I always saw Century rides as 4 25mile rides with 3 special stops.
Sincerely, Don

[RBW] Updated Atlantis build, initial Compass tire review

2015-11-09 Thread Mark Reimer
With winter around the bend and 11 straight days of rain, I was getting a
bit down. But the weekend suddenly cleared off and temperatures soared, 40
degrees C higher than it was two years ago! Better go ride. The ground was
still very wet so I decided to change up the Atlantis:

- Put my Velo Orange 52mm fenders on and picked up some leather off-cuts
from a local shop, cut them into mud flaps to extend coverage.
- Mounted some 38mm Compass extra light Barlow Pass tires
- Tried mounting the Carradice Camper Longflap up front for a change, just
to keep all my load in the front

I went on a 100km ride through some really gnarly terrain, including
crossing a handful of gravel pits, a beach, travelling along hydro lines,
crossing a farmer's field, riverbed trails, gravel roads, mud pits from new
construction developments in progress, and more. Even flew through two big
piles of glass that I didn't see at night.

I rode with four other guys - one on the regular weight Barlow Pass, a guy
with WTB nano's, another on some 26" tire, and a Jones 29+. Everyone
flatted on the ride except the two Barlow Pass riders and the Jones. Wow, I
was surprised!

Even more surprising was how much they instantly transformed the feel of
the Atlantis. It feels MUCH quicker than any other tire I've ridden before.
I was able to stick with the group for the full 100km, which has typically
been a challenge for me while riding the Atlantis. They gripped nicely on
most surfaces. Only slick mud and wet leaves posed a problem, which would
be an issue for any slick tire.

Maybe I just got lucky, but I've gotta say I'm a huge fan of these tires.
And the mudflaps were great as well - everyone else looked like they jumped
in the river, and I ended the ride clean and dry.

[RBW] Kingsport library canti-Romulus sighting

2015-11-09 Thread Leslie
So, unlike the SF Bay area, there aren't as many Rivendells around here.
Thanks to MSL in Bristol, there's several, tho'... I usually see them on
the Creeper, or at Steele Creek; in Kingsport itself, other than my own,
I've only seen one other Rivendell, was a Quickbeam out on our Greenbelt.

Until, Thursday, long crazy day that's a whole other story, but I found
myself in downtown Kingsport that afternoon, canvasing the area by bike for
hours. While riding around the downtown area, on my canti-Rom, what did I
find parked outside of the library, but, another canti-Rom. My older
daughter just happened to meet me in the downtown area at the library when
I was arriving, and although she's not a 'bike person', even she noticed,
"wow, that bike is *exactly* like your bike, eerily so!". Of course,
being a canti-Rom, it was the same light blue, but this one had a Selle
Anatomica whereas mine are all Brooks, my tires were a lot larger (I'm
pushing it, running MSO's, whereas this one has sensible 32's on it)... It
was undecaled, the Romulus downtube decal had been removed, but, if you
knew what you were looking at, it was unmistakable that it was the same
frame as mine.

I didn't think it good form to go into the library hollerin' out, who's on
the Ram, and I still had a lot of ground to cover, couldn't just wait and
see who came out.

Anywho, just wondering if there's someone else in Kingsport here on the
list, that I'd not known about just reaching out to say hello

Re: [RBW] Re: 10-speed Cassette with Sunrace Friction Shifters.

2015-11-09 Thread Patrick Moore
FWIW, the Microshift rear road derailleur on the Fargo shifted more
precisely across my 9 sp cassette than the 7410 rd that replaced it after
the MS got caught in the spokes and busted, because the MS required more
lever throw. The (Silver) lever had to move some 110-115* to move the chain
from small to big, while with the 7410, the lever moves exactly 90* for the
same cage movement. Actually, I prefer the 7410 action, though, and with
the long Silver levers I can still hit shifts without grinding the chain.

Re: [RBW] Neo Light

2015-11-09 Thread Eric Norris
This looks like it works on the same principle as the Magnic Lights, which I’ve
been using for several years. Magnic just came out with Ver. 2 of their
product, which added new circuitry for a steadier and brighter light.

No friction!? Absolutely true. There is no contact between the Magnic light and
the bike, other than the mount. The system generates energy from the motion of
the (alloy or steel) rims passing by the light.

I have one of the new headlights, but I haven’t had time to use it. The first
gen lights aren’t nearly as bright as, say, an Edelux, but for me they’re
certainly bright enough to ride with. They’re also always on, adding the
benefit of daytime running lights.

Despite the protests of skeptics, I would say that the lights have no effect on
the bike’s speed. If there is, I can’t feel it. Yes, you don’t get something
(light) for nothing, but the Magnic Lights come very, very close.

P.S. The inventor of the Magnic Light is currently fighting several patent
battles with other companies using the “eddy technology.” This might be one of
them.

P.P.S. Magnic Lights are available in the USA from Clever Cycles in Portland OR.

think are somehow turning in response to the wheel going by them, but I’m not
sure.

As I said, in the real world, on real bikes, I can’t feel any kind of drag from
these lights. My guess is that they’re much more efficient than a standard hub
or bottle generator, which has much larger physical parts that are rotated by
the motion of the bike and, in the case of a bottle generator, friction between
the tire and the generator. The drag must be measurable, but it’s not
perceptible to me.

Hold up the front wheel on a Magnic-equipped light and spin it … it just spins,
like the lights weren’t there. Even a very efficient hub generator, with the
lights off, doesn’t spin as easily.

[RBW] Re: Teaser

2015-11-09 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch

Here's my Le Tour mixte, parked at the farmers market yesterday. I would
not call it a pseudo mixte. As long as it has the extra seat stays, it
would still qualify as "dual" in terms of tubing. There have been a number
of threads in various bike forums regarding what constitutes a "proper"
mixte. I would say there are single top tube and twin, or parallel top tube
mixtes, but they all must have the dual seat stay configuration. In any
case, I like to think of the first translation, which is generally mixed,
as in co-ed, or unisex.

I would classify the Betty/Yyves, Wilbury, Cheviot, as perfectly non-pseudo
mixtes. The Clementine, of course, is definitively not a mixte.

[RBW] Re: 10-speed Cassette with Sunrace Friction Shifters.

2015-11-09 Thread Philip Kim
I don't think it matters as most 9 speed and 10 spd have same cable pull
(at least for shimano). I think 11 speed is another story.

I've been successful using 1x10 speed on ultegra barcons, and the dia compe
ene bar end shifters. Just requires a bit more careful shifting, but i got
used to it. Since I keep pedaling, I just loosely pedal until I feel the
chain shift into place.

I've gone back to 9 speed mostly cheaper cassettes and chains, but still
gives somewhat consistent intervals in teeth.

Nice build! I'm a huge fan of the babyshoe pass on my hunqapillar,
fantastic tires.

What tires was the Jones 29+ running (more than anything curious if they
were mtn bike tires or road tires).

Also, which handlebars are those and how do you like them?

[RBW] Re: Updated Atlantis build, initial Compass tire review

2015-11-09 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
Good looking build, nicely appointed. I like that harlequin tape job,
subtle and a surprise. I also dig that backdrop in the second photo.

Thanks for the Compass review. I have extra lights in 32mm and the Rat
Trap. I have some miles on the 32s, but not much on the Rat Traps. Love
them both, but still can't totally speak to the longevity of these tires.
I'm getting a Clementine and I am seriously leaning toward saving the OEM
Kendas for the apocalypse and investing in a pair of Switchbacks. It is
mainly for daily commuting and also shopping and towing my son on his
Burley, but why save the good china only for special occasions?

I've heard mostly positive things, which jives with my experience so far,
but a few reviews question the durability of the Compass tires (including
someone at Riv when I mentioned my plan). While I don't love flats, I
think, barring goat head country, some of it comes down to riding style and
experience, and staying out of the gutter. I'm willing to trade a slightly
higher flat rate for awesome road feel, but I don't want to ride on
hothouse flowers, either, so reviews like this, though very "unscientific",
are encouraging.

Just bought a Soma San Marcos and other stuff from Gravel & Grind.

I mostly corresponded with James, who was super helpful (I kept changing my
mind, and he was always patient and worked with me), always emailing me
updates on my order, so there were no surprises when I went to pick up the
bike.

Awesome space, awesome shop. Laid back vibe and carries useful bike stuff.
I picked up an extra wide 11-40t 9 speed cassette for my 1x9 setup.

Wish it was closer to my house, I would bike there and get coffee and hang
out all the time.

Recommend anyone to check out the shop if they are in Frederick, MD area.

2015-11-09 Thread Mark Reimer
Absolutely.

The leather is quite heavy, which is good and bad in some ways. Good in
that it's stiff and maintains it's position for optimal coverage. Bad
because it's too thick to mount on the inside of the fender, which would
look a bit nicer in my opinion.

Leather isn't really the best material for flaps though, it can't handle
long term water and grit. But this was cheap and easy, so I'm testing the
shape before making a new one in spring, probably out of some kind of
rubber or plastic.

shifting I ever experienced was the Retrofriction dt shifter-cum-Am
Classic-10-sp (11-23, 12-27) cassette system originally installed on my
2003 Curt. Note that these cassettes were fully stock.

The 9 s- Silver BES + home-brew cassettes that I've used on several bikes
also work fine; note here that these cassettes are hacked together from
miscellaneous cogs in a box with 9 sp spacers; the cogs may be 7, 8, 9, or
10 sp -- I don't know. They are also out of series, so that the ramps and
cutouts are all over the place. Sure, some jumps grind a wee bit, but the
needed technique quickly becomes second nature, so that it's easy to shift
all the cogs even on terrain that leaves little attention to shifting since
it demands it for steering.

The technique in question is what one might call "subtle overshifting" --
this was the technique du jour with the old pre-indexed,
pre-slant-parallelogram setups. You quickly learn to very slightly
overshift and very quickly re-adjust the lever to settle the chain on the
cogs. (With stock Hyperglide, on the other hand, you simply move the lever
and wait for the ramps to pick up the chain.)

I guess that the difference in opinion may be generational; I grew up
shifting the old stuff where this overshifting technique was natural.
Frankly, shifting 9 mismatched cogs with a 7410 (short throw, = less
precise) rd with a friction BES works better than shifting an old 14-28 5
speed with Retrofrictions and a non-slant-parallelogram rd of some sort:
this was the system I had on that erstwhile '58 Herse. The 9s shift better
than the 5 did!

 Eric,

Thanks for shedding light via your personal experience.

How do the magnetic lights do in rain/mud. It seems like it has to be close
to the rim in order to generate the magnetic force to turn the generator
inside the light, but is there any safety risks to being so close to the
rim?

With winter around the bend and 11 straight days of rain, I was getting
a bit down. But the weekend suddenly cleared off and temperatures soared,
40 degrees C higher than it was two years ago! Better go ride. The ground
was still very wet so I decided to change up the Atlantis:

 - Put my Velo Orange 52mm fenders on and picked up some leather
off-cuts from a local shop, cut them into mud flaps to extend coverage.
 - Mounted some 38mm Compass extra light Barlow Pass tires
 - Tried mounting the Carradice Camper Longflap up front for a change,
just to keep all my load in the front

I went on a 100km ride through some really gnarly terrain, including
crossing a handful of gravel pits, a beach, travelling along hydro lines,
crossing a farmer's field, riverbed trails, gravel roads, mud pits from new
construction developments in progress, and more. Even flew through two big
piles of glass that I didn't see at night.

I rode with four other guys - one on the regular weight Barlow Pass, a
guy with WTB nano's, another on some 26" tire, and a Jones 29+. Everyone
flatted on the ride except the two Barlow Pass riders and the Jones. Wow, I
 was surprised!

Even more surprising was how much they instantly transformed the feel
of the Atlantis. It feels MUCH quicker than any other tire I've ridden
before. I was able to stick with the group for the full 100km, which has
typically been a challenge for me while riding the Atlantis. They gripped
nicely on most surfaces. Only slick mud and wet leaves posed a problem,
which would be an issue for any slick tire.

Maybe I just got lucky, but I've gotta say I'm a huge fan of these
tires. And the mudflaps were great as well - everyone else looked like they
jumped in the river, and I ended the ride clean and dry.
