[RBW] Rivendell Wilbury Mixte

Wow! The best upright Rivendell model!
Im sure it will generate tons of interest and I would not be surprised if you
are getting offers already.

1. Are you in the Maryland area?
2. Does the personal name lettering come off the top tube?
3. At 5'6", is that the real seat height at which you ride the bike? Looks
really low. I am 5'7".
4. Looking to trade for any other Rivendell model?

[RBW] Where to buy RBW Summer Gloves now that they are gone?

2016-06-04 Thread Lungimsam
I love those gloves. Except for the spotty tan they give your hands. Makes
you look like you have liver spots or something.

But I really like the terry on the back of the thumbs and the massive
cushiness of the huge pad.

They only have those Thinny gloves now. No terrycloth snot/sweat wipers.

Anyone know who manufactured them and where to find now?

Re: [RBW] VO heads up

2016-06-04 Thread masmojo
I've always put it on top, putting it on the bottom really would not work too
well, the bottoms are typically rough and very porous and they recommend only
using a small amount. It would take a whole tin if you put it on the bottom,
and the leather would soak up too much.

I agree with happy customers providing great marketing. You sure this
thread hasn't been excruciating enough? :) So far, the output of this
thread is an assortment of notes in a text file.

Once I convince Roman to start discussing the component selection, I'll
create a shared build spreadsheet and post notable (minute/excruciating?)
updates to the list. He mentioned RBW is reluctant to do that as they
don't want to pull parts this early. If they are floating the cost of
items they can no longer sell, I can't say I blame them. Maybe I can speed
the process if I offer to increase my deposit to cover the cost of any part
pulled or ordered. That way, the risk is on me. I would rather do as much
up front as possible to reduce the risk of a potential back order
preventing timely delivery.

This is especially true if I have to plan for a trip to Walnut Creek. One
of my ways of making that trip is planning for maintenance on my RV in
Junction City, OR and driving to CA while that work is being done. I'll be
out of the RV anyway. Might as well make that time productive. I would
need to find a way for laying the bike in the (covered) bed of the truck in
a way that reduces risk of paint damage. I think I can find a way, maybe
taking of the front tire off and laying the bike on a dog bed. Of course,
with these brakes, I would need to deflate the tire a bit. Hmmm. :)
Still not something that would happen often, though. I can live with that.

The internet mantra is, "Pics or it didn't happen." Those are a few months
out yet, but will get here eventually.

Another cool coincidence. I just discovered that site a couple of days ago

As one of my auxiliary functions, the extraverted intuition (Ne) is
something I work at through mediums such as this list. It works very well

Re: [RBW] Ride Report: Mini-Ring the Peak Trail

2016-06-04 Thread Deacon Patrick
Yeah, I'm not very good at rating trails for folks. Except for my daughters
who don't know any better, no one I've ridden with has agreed with my trail
assessment. I guess that comes from riding only the stuff around here. My
apologies for putting your through terror! I'd rate this trail as harder
than Rampart by a notch or two (out of how many? Who knows!), but (I think)
it doesn't have the drop off issue -- though who knows, I'd not have said
Rampart has a drop off issue either, so what do I know?). For the record,
I've taken trails with drop off issues, and usually end up LCGing them.
Back to the trail though. Keep in mind this is 20 yards of the trail, and a
nice pastoral part at that. Hopefully my road picking skills are a better
match! Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: OT - Help me decide how to spend a day in Sacramento /San Francisco

2016-06-04 Thread Neil Doran
Another recommendo for SF walking or biking tour. Suggestions by dstein and
Kurt are spot on. You will love the ferry ride from Oakland, and SF is
truly a walkable town.

I'm one of the few (former) locals that still really digs riding across the
GG bridge. If you rented a bike, you could do that, ride through Golden
Gate park, part of the Marin Headlands, lunch in Sausalito...you will get
all of the million-dollar views that way.

If the Giants are playing at home, don't forget that visitors can view the
playing field for free, from the waterfront side. You could soak up a
little SF baseball atmosphere that way. Short ride from the Ferry Building.

As much as it pains me, I would skip Riv. I think most first-time visitors
find the warehouse a bit underwhelming (sacrilege!), and BBH is cool and
all, but spend your time in SF. You will not regret it.

Final thoughts: skip Alcatraz and Fishermans Wharf. Too many damn people.
You will have the tailored experience you seek by getting off on your own.
And definitely skip Muir Woods, Napa wine country, etc...way too much
driving, and again, Bay Area traffic is the suk.

More final thoughts...bring a warm layer and hat to SF. Sacramento will be
somewhere around 100 degrees in July, while SF and environs can be in the
upper 50s with a stiff wind and fog rolling in. No joke, you will be cold,
especially if you are walking.

Nitto M106NAS? Shape looks close, but my M106NAS have screened on logos and
the bars pictured appear to have engraved logos.

The M106NAS is "short and shallow" bar whose shape works well with modern
brake (or brifter) shapes. The shape is very close to the (much cheaper)
Soma HWY1 bar.

Re: [RBW] Ride Report: Mini-Ring the Peak Trail

2016-06-04 Thread Patrick Moore
Aha, I see the trail -- the route seems less "fraught" than that encircling
Rampart Reservoir. (To all the others: Deacon took me on a circuit of
Rampart Reservoir last August, where I spent all my time afraid of falling
off the edge into the water, picking my way anxiously through boulders, and
trying not to fall down in muddy crossings. I did fall once, in the
direction of the dropoff, but fortunately intervening boulders caught me
and the Fargo and kept me on the level. My bar tape still shows the trauma.

I may have to drive up to C Springs at the very beginning of August to pick
up my daughter from the Rocky Mountain Orthodox Youth Camp and, if
circumstances permit staying a day or two, I will very definitely look you
up.

And, I like the blue bonnet.

Like John and Dave, I'd also recommend the Amtrak/ferry trip. The
ferry is a nice way to see the Bay from a perspective you won't get any
other way. (If the ferry is not your thing, though, you can get off
Amtrak in Berkeley or Oakland and take BART to SF instead.)

As an Oaklander, I feel I must plug for some sights on the sunny side of
the Bay. These are things within walking distance of the Amtrak station:
  - lunch in Oakland's China Town (I quite like Shan Dong)
  - the Oakland Museum of California is a neat, eclectic museum near China Town
  - have a beer on the waterfront at Heinold's First and Last Chance Saloon
before you get back on the train

I also second John's suggestion for Golden Gate Park! Besides the
DeYoung, the Academy of Science is awesome, and the Japanese tea garden
is a nice little retreat.

I guess if this is your only time in SF, you should probably also see
the Golden Gate Bridge. Personally, I would skip the bike, though. I
have ridden over the bridge a few times but I always find it unpleasant,
between the roadies who want to go super fast, and all the pedestrian
and bicycle tourist traffic, all sharing the same strip of sidewalk...I
would recommend walking, or simply taking it in from a distance.

Best,
Richard

I just talked to my sister west of Florissant the other day, and she

[RBW] Ride Report: Mini-Ring the Peak Trail

2016-06-04 Thread Deacon Patrick
A! My first longer single track ride of the year. Delicious!

Popped down to and then up the Pikes Peak Highway (Loads of traffic because I
was a laggard getting started, plus the test runs for the racers of the Hill
Climb were coming down with their big trucks and trailers), branching off on
the Ring the Peak Trail, which I rode past the stunningly crowded reservoirs
(fortunately not crowded trails, so I saw the crowds mostly from afar) to Edlow
Rd, and came back down (thus discovering that for the moment downhill speeds
and creosote scents are within exposure limits!). What an amazing day and
wonderful to get back out on the single track!

(yes, the astute will notice I’m posting these to flickr. The Grid isn’t ready
to handle a photo heavy sight yet, but it’s still in beta).

[RBW] Tubeless 24 pound Sam Hillborne, plus "how to easily QR your CX70 brakes"

2016-06-04 Thread Bill Lindsay
I built a road wheelset around the HED Belgium C2 Plus rims, wanting to get
the plumpest tubeless road tires on my road bike. It turns out I went too
wide, both in the tire and in the rim, and it just was not going to work.
I took a half-step down in rim width to the normal HED Belgium C2 on the
road bike. The happy consequence was my Hillborne got a nice wheel
upgrade, and now sports Compass Barlow Pass Extralights, tubeless, and now
weighs 24 pounds.

Tubeless Hillborne

In the process of wanting to run really fat tires on a roadish bike, I
decided I wanted cantilever brakes that would open WIDE, so I picked up a
set of Shimano CX70 brakes here on the list, only to find how hard it is to
actually QR them. It's quite difficult to get the cable head out of it's
little receptacle. I suspect that might have been part of why the seller
sold them. Anyway, I stared and thought, and cogitated, deliberated, and
ruminated, and came up with a solution. First, here's a photo of the cable
end we're talking about:

CX70 brake

The issue is that the cylindrical head fits into the ROUND recess in the
front part of the brake arm, and there's a LONG finger on the back part.
Un-modified you have to have enough slack to get the cable part all the way
around that back finger, so the cylindrical head can pop out.

My modification involved filing the front face of that cylinder. I tapered
the non-load bearing end quite a bit so now you can push the cable straight
down (in-line with the cable itself) and the cylindrical head just pops out
of that round hole, and frees right up.

Close-up of the mod

So, if you are like me and bought CX70s for the express purpose of being
able to remove fat-tired wheels without deflating a tire, and you are like
me and dislike how hard it is to QR your CX70s, then consider this mod.

As long as your frame comes equipped with downtube shifter bosses,
you're good on all three counts. Where you could get shut out is if
instead of a shifter boss the frame comes only with a brazed-on cable

Re: [RBW] Re: Friction solvdes S3X shifting problem.

2016-06-04 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks for this -- just what I need. If no one takes me up on the trade,
I'll get one.

In other news: brief errand shakedown ride indicates that all is well. No
hills, but I did try the lower gears. 2nd -- 57" -- feels "normal"; in1st
-- 48" -- I feel a mild "coffee grinder" effect; not so much drag as such,
but a lack of smoothness -- which I daresay implies drag. But 1st will be
fine for seated climbing. 3d is direct, 76".

Man, I wish that they had designed this with a 16% drop from 3d/direct to
2nd, and the 25% drop between 2d and 3d (76, 64, 48). But for a quick fix
for longer rides without too much expense or too much hassle in swapping
over from fixed, it's quite good.

:) I could do those on a separate thread just to keep the counts down. :)

i'm hoping I got it perfect the start with, but I also know there will be
tweaks as I get used to it. Maybe it's inevitable.

Speaking of updates, should I post order updates as dates get closer or
just wait until delivery? With all of the help I have received, I feel
this bike is a bit of a group effort. Or, maybe I could create a
spreadsheet on Google Drive to track the build.

Thanks.

John,
Thanks for the additional option. If needed, I can mention the possibility
to Roman when I speak with him. Like Joe, I personally don't care if I
have to insert a repaired flat as partially inflated and then complete
inflation on the bike. I don't think it's that big of a deal. But, it's
good to have options. As for the shifters, I've discussed all kinds of
options there also. Though I would like brifters to start with, I would
like to keep the option of switching to DT or bar ends later.

Thanks.

[RBW] Re: Appendectomy and cycling- how long to heal?

2016-06-04 Thread IanA
Interesting stuff. I have a inguinal hernia that I've been putting off
having repaired. Partially because they told me two months off the bike
and away from yoga and partially because I am still trying to find a
surgeon who will do it with resorbable mesh. In Canada, the procedure is
paid for etc., but it can be a struggle navigating the health service.

I'm starting to feel it more and more and I think I getting some odd
side-effects from living with it unrepaired, so maybe it;s time. I've
though about the exercise following surgery a lot, and am wondering if just
walking long distances will fill the exercise void and promote health after
surgery.

Not meaning to derail the thread, but as it is not entirely unrelated
(surgery etc) I'd appreciate the info.

If anyone has an easy on/easy off (= hinged?***) clamp type dt shifter boss
for sale or trade, I'd be happy to talk. Problem Solvers has an elegant
one, and there are a couple of decent ones on eBay, but the totals with
shipping will all be over $50.

I have a pair of 7 speed indexed (friction option too) Dura Ace dt
shifters, and a pair of even earlier friction DA dt shifters (in pieces,
but I think I have all the pieces), for either of which I'd make a straight
swap.

*** I want something that doesn't require bending metal for attachment -- a
clamp that can be easily and often removed and installed.

Thanks.

Re: [RBW] OT: Mac OS X to Ubuntu question

2016-06-04 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks, all. Problem identified, if not solved.

Garth: that link identified the problem. When I downloaded Ubuntu back
circa 2006 onto a PC using Windows something or other, all it took was to
click on the download button and follow the instructions; the process
erased Windows and substituted Ubuntu. I expected to do the same with this
old Macbook but, apparently, with Macs, damn Apple's eyes, it is hardly as
straightforward.

Hopefully the video technique will help.

"Apple’s made it difficult to boot non-Mac OS X operating systems off of
USB drives. While you can connect an external CD/DVD drive to your Mac and
boot from standard Linux live CDs and USBs, simply connecting a Linux live
USB drive created by standard tools like Universal USB Installer and
uNetbootin

to
a Mac won’t work."

Re: [RBW] Shifting problems with the S3X

2016-06-04 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks. I may have figured it out. The ist gear "click" on the lever is
somewhat elusive, and it takes a subtle touch to get the lever to click
into the 1st position and reach the detente. I think that the lever's
internals may be a bit worn. The hub itself seems to be fine.

If this latest adjustment doesn't work, I'll try a derailleur shift lever.
The ideal shifter, IMO, would have a sturdy detente for 2d gear, and rely
on friction for the other two.

Re: [RBW] Thinking of a Riv

2016-06-04 Thread Dan McNamara
I have brazed-on Paul Racers on a 650b frame and the brakes will not clear a
42mm tire up front without deflating. The pads do not clear the fork when
opening the brakes and that is the limiting factor. Tried Kool Stop mountain
pads instead of thin lines but did not really help.

So I just live with it. Not a huge deal.

You can get Paul Racers with a polished finish. I am sure RBW could order them
for you.

[RBW] Re: OT: Mac OS X to Ubuntu question

2016-06-04 Thread Garth

BTW, I run Linux Mint, it is Ubuntu based but more "user friendly" in many
ways for most and the best "out of the box" hardware support. Is your
Macbook a 4.1 ? I found this video that may help you.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGjMsJJesbw

He is speaking of unetbootin for the bootable usb stick.

[RBW] OT: Mac OS X to Ubuntu question

2016-06-04 Thread Garth
Have you simply googled something like : 2008 macbook install ubuntu ?

I do not know much about computers either, I type à finger at a time, and I
don't really understand computer terminal lingo very well, yet I install linux
on all my windows based pc's as soon as I buy them without ever even starting
windows. I can however read and comprehend directions !

Installing from a cd(now dvd) now seems archiac compared to the ease and speed
of usb stick. Once installed on on a usb stick you can first try out the linux
version live on any existing computer as it completely bypasses the installed
os. This way you can see what works and what may not before actually installing
it .

Point being, I do all this by web searching. I realized in regards to
computers whatever the issue may be, someone has already experienced it and
solved it and written about it. When google searching your keywords are
everything, and putting a specific word in double quotes is sometimes
necessary. So while I cannot help you specifically I can tell you wih Mac
hardware it surely has already been done.
